I live a block from here and never went into this place until I blew out both of my bike's tires at once one day. They fixed it for $20 in a half hour and I was riding again. It's a nice little shop and I'm happy to have them so close for whenever I might might bust my tires again, but other than that, their other stuff is just a smidge pricy. Took my very old, very rusted, 10 speed in for a tune up and a few replacement parts. Not only did they get it done super fast, but it's never ridden smoother. Feels like a brand new bike. The staff, both when I dropped it off, and picked it up were super friendly and genuinely nice (I'm saying that as Midwesterner). I never write reviews unless I'm horrified or super impressed. Used to go here regularly for parts and labor. No more - just got the surly bike shop treatment. Went over because I thought I was pumping my tires wrong and I just needed their input. Was basically treated like a child. Really inappropriate and unprofessional, not to mention perfectly fitting the stereotype of the ill-tempered bike shop employee. Fast, friendly and honest and they support women's cycling (I am proud to be on their cyclocross team!). There is a lot of trust that needs to happen around bike builds and repairs to make sure your ride is safe and I take all of my bikes to Shawn and his team. They've done everything from minor cable repairs to complete builds for my road, track and cyclocross bikes. They have a huge selection of commuter bikes (I got my townie Fairdale here) and a bunch of incredible vintage track bikes to gawk at. Plus they love doggos and my pup loves visiting them. I just went there to check out my rear tire which they saw needed to be replaced. He said the replacement costs 55 and I said Amazon sells them for more than $20 less. He said yeah we're a local bike shop, so I guess that means it's a license to rip people off. I have almost no time so I have no choice, he fixes it up. When he rang up the bill it seemed curiously high and I question it and he's like oh, the tire's 60, is that ok? I said no, that's not ok and he said nothing, just pushed the receipt toward me to sign it. The guy was clearly competent and I'm satisfied with the work but not the trickery or the feeling I was ripped off and cheated, without a hint of oh my bad. read more

I have so many mixed feelings about this place, so let me explain, as I almost never give a three star review. I found King Kog through my neighborhood bike shop in Oakland, King Kog- their sister store, or whatever. The people at that shop are amazing and I can't go on enough about how sweet they are and not pretentious and non threatening bike folks. I'll leave them their own review. This review is for the Brooklyn location. I had my bike taken apart in Oakland at the King kog there and shipped to the Brooklyn location. No one called me when it arrived. I'd called every few days, no info, no expected date, and then it gets there an no one let's me know. No big deal, but not a great first impression. Then my bike is ready to go. I go into the shop and there are three guys taking up all the space. I'm sorry, I'm there to spend money, please send your bros away, or atleast make room for me in the tiny sitting area. I asked "hey do any of you work here?" and the response was something along the lines of "no, we are just hanging out". I mean come on, get up for a lady you dicks. SO, the ambiance not awesome. I needed to charge my phone and the guy at the counter was super distracted but helped me out by plugging me in and offering me coffee. He was sweet, really no issues there, the staff is nice enough (hence a 3 star and not a 1 star). My bike was quoted as costing $50 to put back together. They charged me $85 to put it back together. They put my handle bars on crooked, my seat was so high like a damn clown bike, and my tires were almost flat. I ended up taking it to the Excelsior Bike Shop in Crown Heights and they fixed all the issues and put on a new seat and grips (someone in King Kog's care, my seat ripped and my grips looked like they'd been dragged through mud). I can unfortunately not recommend this bike shop, as my bike came to me in worse condition than I could have imagined. Dirty, with crooked handle bars, a seat that was ripped, flat tires. I was not impressed. If you are considering the Brooklyn King Kog, don't. Go to Excelsior instead. read more

When they're open, they're very nice and the prices are reasonable and they do good work. But I tried to pop in 3 times in the last two weeks, between 12:30 and 1:00pm, and no one was there, even though the giant sign on the door says 12-7 daily. After the third time I gave up and just took my business back to B's Bikes down the street, who open when they say they're open. read more

I went looking for a new bike after my crappy panasonic conv. had gotten clipped, presumably by the police. I need a good commuter bike, to take me a couple miles a day, be able to be chained up, and not break the bank. I went in on a lovely Saturday, a little nervous if this place was going to be super high on pretense given the nature of the fixed gee-ah community. Surprisingly, it was awesome. They have awesome shirts, and a good selection of frames, completes, and parts. I bought a KHS Flite 100 on the spot, after a little deliberation and info on what she had in stock. I'm still waiting to pick it up, as jesus decided to piss on me 2 consecutive days so far. I plan on getting a shirt and and hopefully becoming a local there. Pros: Nice, friendly and knowledgeable owner. High quality selection, didn't seem to be any crappy products in there. Cons: MSRP of my bike is 610, paid 650. She put a brake on there though, so that counts for something. read more

Sean is great. He's insanely respectful to everyone who walks in regardless of what they know or don't know about bikes. He's an extremely good mechanic that enjoys showing you what was wrong and how to avoid it next time. I'm a DIYer when it comes to repairs but when something is beyond my scope I'm more than happy to take my bikes to KK and leave with the confidence that I can ride away with top-level work done. read more

This was by far the best experience I've ever had purchasing a bike. Admittedly, it's been years since I've bought a bike in a shop, having worked as a mechanic in one for years, but we were looking to put a bike together for my roommate, and they went so far above and beyond the call of duty when it came to helping us out. Fantastic prices, ludicrously accommodating, knowledgeable, helpful staff that never tried to step on our toes, fast turnarounds, cute kids running around the store, and now we're sitting on the floor of my apartment putting together a beautiful Serotta track bike. If you ride a "track" "fixed" "700CMX" or whatever else you wanna call it this place has what you need. We don't have a shop like this where I live in Phoenix so it was super rad to see all these single/speed (and or) track components in one spot. They have a nice collection of clothing too, including my favorite King Kog shirt with "F**K YEAH!" written hugely across the back. My ONLY gripe with the place was on my first visit the girl working didn't really acknowledge me much... and I felt kind of like since I wasn't a regular I was written off. I came back a few hours later to purchase something for a friend back home, and she was way kinder that go around. Appearances really deceive here. Walking by, I was pretty sure from all the fixed-gear aesthetics, this would be yet another hipstery, attitude-heavy bike shop. Happy to report that's not true at all! People there are helpful, if a bit busy, they have a nice little selection of accessories, and their prices are actually quite reasonable. I created a Yelp account just to write about this place. The five stars are just for the work they do on your bike. I've lived in the neighborhood for years and have tried a number of local bike shops. Used to go to B's for their nice customer service, but twice got my bike tuned there only to have the brakes start to rub. So I started going to Affinity. Same thing. King Kog was the only shop to tell me my wheel was out of true and fix it. When it comes to tune-ups and repairs, all I care is that they know their stuff, and King Kog does. In terms of shopping, they're limited, but whatever. Today, I went in and their bike bells were out of stock. They told me to check out B's, which had a ton of bells but just feels so busy and impersonal in comparison. Plus I asked a B's employee about other shops that might buy a used bike and he referred me to Craigslist. So I decided to wait till King Kog gets bells in stock because I'd rather give them my business. (And if not them, Affinity.) read more

I was in here yesterday to pick up a replacement tube. The staff was so helpful I ended up buying way more stuff. Turns out they also do consignment! I brought in my 1987 nishiki time trials bike today and am greeted by the owner. He breaks down the whole consignment process for me, and I leave my bike to be sold. This is a great shop, great staff, and pretty much a candy store for anyone on a track bike. I'll be back for sure. Things I like about King Kog: -Approachable, friendly and knowledgeable staff. -Quick and affordable. -Serves my favorite coffee. -My bike is always 10x improved when I pick it up. I have been to King Kog a number of times and continue to go because the customer service is fantastic, my poor abused bike gets some much needed love and the employees explain their recommendations well so I know what and why I am paying for it. I've learned to do a lot of quick fixes to my bike over the years, but I always bring my bike to king kog if I need something new, or if there's something major I can't do on my own. They are quick, well priced, and extremely communicative. I have never had an experience at king kog when I've ultimately taken home a bicycle I haven't been satisfied with. They also have a great selection of parts, bags, shirts and other stuff. i went into king kog with trepidation. i had just returned from a trip home to nj with my 5th grade bike--a geeky mountain bike with an f'n kick stand. i had a feeling that my bike was out of place in the shop, and i might be ejected on the spot harshly. well, there were all these fancy italian road bikes, BUT the dude working there was really kind and although they don't deal in mountain bikes, he tried fixing mine. his tools didn't quite jive with my thicker tires, so dude only charged me 5 bucks for a new tired tube and wheel wrap cuz he couldn't fix the rest. no labor charge. also, above and beyond the call of duty, the dude let me behind the counter to watch what he was doing, and explained as he went along. the shop wasn't that crazy busy at that moment, which is why he could make a lil time for an impromptu lesson. he recommended time's up collective for more serious bike learning. the other cool thing about the shop is that they created an amazing t-shirt, combining a bike gear and the crass logo. i've been fantasizing about wrappin my body in it since i've first seen it. overall king kog made me wish my bike skills had graduated to fixed gear and my wallet swelled to baller proportions. someday. i'd give them 5 stars, but not until i can test their mettle on a bike they are equipped for. they are the real deal though, and technically deserve 5 stars. read more

Super nice. Stopped by to see if they had an air compressor, and they not only filled my tires, they checked to make sure the beads were seated properly AND adjusted the brakes. The employees here are quite possibly as stuck up as the owners themselves. I walked in looking for a road frame as I'd heard they carry them sometimes and was instantly told to look at the display and ignored from there on in. I had a lot of cash on me and was ready to buy something-- for a customer-less shop they made 0 effort to help me. Would never go back-- your money is much better spent elsewhere. I usually do my own bike maintenance but I got frustrated trying to fix something. So I brought my bike in, the problem was quickly diagnosed, another problem I had given up on was fixed. They explained how to do everything myself, and made a minor adjustment so I could ride for the next couple days until my replacement part came in. read more
