I've been to many bike repairs in Williamsburg over 15 years.Thankfully tried out Different Spokes about three years ago. Jose by far is the best. Won't try to oversell you, fast turnaround, great communication, bike feels and looks like new every time I get a tune up. This bike shop was a lifesaver! I got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and then stupidly continued to cycle so the tube then ripped or whatever tubes do and I couldn't even wheel the bike. Anyway I arrived at the shop completely covered in black with said tube in my hands. They were going to fix it then and there but I said I'd come back. They gave me wipes to clean myself up and then it was ready 2 hours late for just $20!! Highly recommend!! read more

Came in for a tune up with a dirty high end road bike after a season of winter riding, and they charged a very reasonable $95 (especially in NY including a bike clean. I've been charged $165 for the same thing 10min away) and came back with a bike that looked and felt like new. As a "crappy ten speed" Greenpoint commuter, most of my experiences with bike shops in north Brooklyn have been undignified at best, shame-inducing at worst. Even when a shop mechanic is willing to listen, overcrowding tends to make me feel like I'm really imposing on their time. As someone eager to learn about their bike, and happy to generously tip a bike shop employee for their time spent answering my admittedly stupid questions about their bike, I've always been disappointed by the discrepancy between demand and supply. So, yesterday morning, when my back tire almost came out of the drop outs on the first stretch of the Williamsburg Bridge, I was dreading trying to find a shop that would (a) be open at 9:30am and (b) do more than tighten some stuff up and send me on my way (which had happened at a shop twice this week, when I took it in because something felt off). Walking forlornly down the bridge, bros whizzing by me at smugness levels exceeding the legal limit, I remembered passing this hilariously-named shop right next to the BQE. It was open! I walked in an explained what had happened. The mechanic (whose name I rudely did not ask) took a look at my drop outs and immediately asked if the bike had been hit by a car recently. He said my right side was completely dented inwards, making it nearly impossible to align a wheel, not to mention super dangerous to ride. It had only become noticeable because the day before, I had knocked it out of alignment messing with my breaks. I would need a new wheel. Frankly, I've been warned by many a more experienced cyclist that shops tend to be overeager in replacing parts. This was not the case at all. This guy charged me basically the absolute minimum for the brand-new wheel, not to mention straightening out the frame. He even called me to say he had finished it sooner than expected. I realized riding away from the shop that he ALSO taped down my peeling handlebar tape, AND cleaned and greased my chain. Significantly overpriced. Poor customer service. Looking for parts or need something done? Look elsewhere. Everything here is priced 1 1/2 to 2x as expensive. I mean right down to small things like inner tubes and patch kits. If you're rich and don't care - the guys might be competent mechanics - I don't know. Examples: I dont' know of ANY bike shop that charges more that $6.00 for an inner tube. You can buy them for as little as $4 if you know where to go. These guys charge $7! A patch kit costs $6 here - I held off and bought the same Park Tool kit for $3.50 at Brooklyn Cycle Works. Because I was lazy and wanted the convenience, I went here yesterday, grudgingly to buy an inner tube. I allowed myself to be cheated on the price - but I thought the product would at least be ok... wrong. In a once-in-a-lifetime event, I opened the inner tube box and found that there was a perfectly rectangular hole in the tube. I brought it right back. I had it in my possession maybe 10 minutes. I asked, not for my money back - but to exchange it for a new tube. The dude wasn't having it. That $7 will be the last money you get out of me or anyone I can convince to go to Landmark bicycles instead. Moral of the story - GO TO LANDMARK BICYCLES INSTEAD. read more

Bottom line is they were able to fix my bike when every other place I went to said I'd probably need to get a new bike - except for Air and Sun, at which one person was kind of enough to say Different Spokes might be able to help me. And from what I can tell so far, he was right. The story is that at some point somebody put my bike gear in wrong or something (sorry, I consider myself a cyclist, but I'm still pretty rough on bike technical stuff). It was crooked, and I went with it for a while, and it was just kind of destroying whatever was going on down there. Several bike repair people told me that replacing the gear might be impossible because the inner threads might be damaged beyond repair, and if that was the case, the bike would be useless, despite everything else working. I was pretty skeptical about this explanation, so I went to a couple places for different opinions. Most told me the same thing, except for a nice guy at Air and Sun. He said Different Spokes had some peeps who knew their stuff and had some uncommon tools, and they might be able to deal with my issue. I went over and the guy there took a look at my bike and excitedly was like "oh yeah, it's cool, we can fix it, no problem, leave it here, pick it up tomorrow." I was understandably skeptical - especially when he told me what it would cost. I actually went back to Air and Sun before I agreed to anything - I wanted to ask the guy if this was a legit deal, if they really knew their stuff, etc. He basically gave it the ok. So I took a little leap of faith - if it was between this and having to basically toss my bike, I figured it was worth exhausting my options. So after making the guy at Different Spokes promise 100 times that they would fix it 100%, as good as new, I left my bike with them and prayed for the best. The next day, on time, the bike was ready and repaired. It's been about a week since then and so far everything seems good. They replaced the gear and it's running smooth. There's a little 'click' if I move the pedal back a bit when I'm letting the bike just kind of 'flow', but it's something I hear, not feel, and essentially everything seems to be running perfectly fine. Credit where credit's due - Different Spokes wasn't cheap, but they seem to have managed to repair my bike when others said it was beyond salvation. read more

I have only came in for minor bike repairs during my commute to work, and I have never been less than satisfied. While I would generally prefer to replace flats by myself, on my way to work, I just don't have the patience. Each time I have been here, the workers quickly (i.e. immediately) started working on the bike and giving the bike due care and attention. Some shops don't check for glass and other things, but here they dotted every i and crossed every t. The second time I came in, the guy fixed my breaks quite well and detected a number of problems that I feel many bike shops would simply ignore when trying to deal with just the symptoms. Furthermore, the mechanic notified me of parts that would have to be replaced without being pushy and saying that I should buy them now. When you are in need of a quick fix to a problem, this place is quite adequate. I can't comment on the bike as a place to buy a bike, but as a repair shop it is all I need. Furthermore, I find the prices to be reasonable. To the guy who complains about $7 inner tube below, I would say that this is a fairly standard price, although $6 is preferable. I have been going here for a few years now. This store is a convenient stop between the commute from my place to Manhattan. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I usually only buy parts that I need and fix them, but there has been a handful of times when I didn't have the time or tools to do it myself. Every time they fix a flat, they do it quickly and they check for any sharp debris, gears that could've caused the flat. I would recommend this bike store to everybody! Came here for the first time when my tire popped on the Williamsburg bridge. I got a new tire and a tune up. My bike was VERY dirty and a lot of built up grime. I just picked it up and it looks like a brand new bike!!! It super clean and rides like butter. I also picked up a few new accessories which he kindly put on my bike. SO OVERPRICED AND RUDE! I went here for a flat fix, it was $14. Ridiculous, but I was in a hurry and paid it. While they were fixing it, they wouldn't even look at me or talk to me. I asked them if there was glass in my tire and they just gave me a dirty look and resumed speaking only in Spanish to each other. ONLY TWO HOURS LATER, ANOTHER FLAT! I called them to let them know I was coming back and they said they would have to charge me. I was annoyed but still went back there. It was a pinch flat caused from improper tube installation. I pointed that out and they said it was MY fault and I must have been jumping curbs. Jumping curbs?! What? A flat two hours after installation is ridiculous, when I haven't had any flats in months. They charged me $7 for the new tube even though it was their fault. I wanted to argue with them but I was just too tired. GO TO ANOTHER BIKE SHOP, THERE ARE PLENTY! I love Affinity for flat fixes or Bike Smith. Even B's Bikes is cheaper and MUCH nicer and they do a great job. read more

Fantastic bike shop. Told them I'd make a review on yelp because I've been coming to them for years for simple maintenance, but they did such a great job this time I had to let other people know. I took my bike in earlier today to have parts migrated to a new frame. Not only did they do it perfectly in less than a day, which is impressive for what would have taken me days. They also went out of their way to clean my filthy bike so it looks like new - just because they're good dudes. I see some comments about being overpriced with bad customer service, never had an experience like that. In fact, I used to take my bike to another shop many years ago and kept getting regular flats. When I took it to these guys the first time they pointed out the other bike shop had fitted a wrong part around the rim which was causing it. They fixed it and I rarely get flats anymore. That's why I haven't been to another bike shop since. This experience sealed the deal for me, they're amazing. read more

To qualify my knowledge - I'm a Cat2 racer and spend an inordinate amount of time on my bike and in bike shops. The guy who runs the store is a fantastic mechanic. I am usually hesitant to let people work on my bicycle, but I'd let him work on anything, knowing full-well that he is going to do a thorough job. Additionally, there's no task too tall. He's entirely rebuilt wheels for me, and when he didn't have the correct spokes in stock, he sent his buddy to Ride Brooklyn (which is not close) to get the right spokes. He didn't even charge me for his friend's time. And he completed the job THAT NIGHT. Any other shop would take at least a week for a wheel build. AND HIS PRICES ARE EXCEPTIONAL. Make sure you tip him. I'm headed there right after I write this! You should too. read more

On my ride home from work my wheels got terribly battered as I rode over the Williamsburg Bridge and I needed my rear tire taken care of ASAP. I had seen Different Spokes in the past and rode out of my way on damaged tires to get there because this needed to get taken care of immediately and they were the closest bike shop I knew. Their storefront was open and all of their lights were on (this was at about 6pm on a Wednesday), and I could even see that their rear door was ajar, but I couldn't enter. Their front door was locked and their was no sign letting customers know when to expect anyone to return. Since the back door was open (the back yard area is closed off from the street) I figured they wouldn't be gone long so I knocked on the door and tried calling for more than 20 minutes and I never saw hide nor hair of anyone. The store was truly empty, even though less scrupulous passersby would have had no issue hopping the fence and entering through the rear, or just stealing the merchandise they left out front. A bad situation was made all the more frustrating and aggravating because they didn't keep their posted business hours or answer their phone (or even leave a note!). I don't care how badly I need their services I won't be wasting my time hoping they've learned to answer their door by then. read more
