It was my first time there -- Great service. Great, friendly crew. The other night I went out for a mind-clearing ride through my neighborhood only to get a flat. It was humbling having to walk my bike all the way home. King Kog is out of my way but I needed to do a long ride the next day, so I took it to the shop since they have one of the earliest opening times in my area and I was crunched for time. They were ready and taking in customers two-by-two at 11. They made great time and it wasn't for lack of care or attention. One employee couldn't help a couple looking for new bikes. But he spent a few minutes giving them advice on where to go and how to get what they were looking for. I went to them out of the blue, but I'm going to make it a point to hit them up for any future needs/advice. read more

I wanted to like this place (even gave them a positive review after the first repair they did) however I cannot stand by a good review. The poor reviews this place has received are warranted and accurate. My experience -- I dropped my bike off on the 19th was told I would receive a quote for the repairs. Initially the ballpark quote was around $100 and these repairs were *necessary*. 12 days later no word from them. I tried calling just their phones aren't working. When I told the guy working that the phone lines were down he just shrugged his shoulders saying "yea they're down. No repairs done after 12 days and now the cost of repairs was $150. I was pretty pissed at having to physically come in to the shop to get a status update on my bike. Regardless, when I told them I wanted to take my bike without having them service it they charged me an ASSESSMENT FEE(?!). I've been riding bikes for decades and have never been charged an assessment fee for just having a repair shop look at my bike. Isn't that what they're paid to do? When I took it to another (read: better) bike shop down the road they too laughed at the idea of an assessment fee. I hate this place. I have spent hundreds of dollars in the last three months at their shop and they are constantly looking at ways to up charge me. In the end, the other bike shop said my bike was fine and needed zero repairs. As stated earlier, the negative reviews you see about this place are spot on. I will never return and I encourage all bikers to visit Bike Plant or another -- literally any other bike shop -- in the area. read more

Came here and got my chain replaced once- came back with a flat three weeks later and they tried to tell me I should replace my chain as it's done once a year...lol. Not sure why I came back again after the update chain b.s. but this time they didn't have my bike ready when they stated it would be (totally get this happens but no text or call to inform so- it was a 20 min repair that they had 3 hours for and I even came an hour later then they said it would be ready- ha!) then the lovey staff member, Pablo, decided he'd share some unsolicited advice about riding in the city (I have a fixed gear and have been riding in the city for 20years- most riders I've met with fixies in NYC know what they are doing or they'd be dead lol). I felt like giving Pablo a bit of customer service advice but didn't as I doubt it would help. My go to shop for purchases/service I've been a bike enthusiast for the past 3 years. Brought in my single speed bike a few times for minor fixes. I then bought a new bike from them 1.5 years ago. I've done 3700 miles on the new bike and I've replaced everything but the front fork and rear derailleur, 80% purchased and 65% serviced by King Kog. Chombo got me some new carbon wheels and recommended an oval chainring. He got it done, the wheels needed adapters to fit my 6 bolt disc brakes and I needed new crank arms and a bottom bracket to fit the 4 bolt oval chainring which he installed. Thrilled with both upgrades and installs. I'm there a decent amount (enough for them to know my name when I walk in) and their staff is very knowledgeable, there's been a few times where I have to ride back to the shop to fix something that didn't work right but they've always resolved the issue, for the most part, without charge. Chombo and Pablo have been a pleasure to work with. They know their stuff and it doesn't take long for them to notice issues or figure out how to fix them. The other mechanics are good mechanics but these two really know their stuff. Overall their staff has been super friendly and knowledgeable, the store is well stocked and the website is awesome (shows what's actually in stock). They're a little pricier than other shops but they've been the shop I relied on for the past 3 years and I have yet to go looking for an alternative shop. read more

This bike shop is the worst in the whole world. I purchased a giant escape from them and the seat and the seat pole were defective. I went and spoke to the owner of the place and he tried to give me the runaround on 3 different occasions with a bullshit story about the problem being fixed. to make a long story short he never fixed or never exchanged the bike as i asked. Super big shout out to the whole staff at King Kog. I dropped off my 20 year old mountain bike in for a tune up (1st time, I know, shame on me). They finished in about a day. 1. They did a thorough assessment on the spot of what needed tuning, repair / replaced. I was aware of some of the parts; so I knew more or less what to expect. They were accurate and honest about what new parts I needed. 2. They stayed in contact via email and text during the tune up process to let me know anything else they found. 3. They went the extra mile and added some small parts to help with cable movement. When I left, the bike rode like the first day I left the shop. The shifting and breaking was responsive and crisp, tire pressure exact. I really appreciate the professionalism and courtesy. I have a group of friends who have all gone here for some time; and they have completely botched all the work we've had them do in recent months. Just unbelievably sloppy work. Without fail, everything they've done has had to be re-done by us or by another shop. To make matters worse, they are one of the most expensive places around. I am bicycle enthusiast, I build my bikes maintain etc, for over 15 years, King Kong is out of my route and there is more bike shops between and closer, I chose them coz they told me with my other bike that there might be frame issue so they wanted to do "boxing " they call for 100$ , they check your bike make sure everything is ok and so on, That sounded a good deal for me specially with my identical other bike had front derailleur issue , But all I needed to make sure front derailleur is installed correctly , other bikes shops do that for 10-15$, Not even a week after I had to bring the bike for front derailleur, and following week again, They did not box my bike coz I build it pretty much everything but derailleur, 2. Time visit I charged another 50$ , 3rd time I know I won't be coming back so it wouldn't matter, And they told me on 3rd time what I actually need to do / main problem after I brought my bike 3 times and paid 150$ , all bike shops are mosquitoes, this one is just more professional looking Lost my business and I won't send any of my friends and try to share my experience anywhere I can read more

This place is a Mecca for fixie aficionados. Genuine vintage steel frames line the walls for some eye candy to make you drool. Just like the beautiful frames on display, the service and advice is authentic, honest, and without pretense. These guys are straight up nice. The owner is from Indiana, and that Midwestern kindness shows through. After working hard, saving up, and doing many hours of bike research/ogling online, I was finally ready to purchase my first big girl bike. First walking in to King Kog I was very nervous, the last time I picked out a bicycle was at a Toys 'R' Us, I was 12 years old and it was a yellow BMX bike called BIG DADDY - so I was feeling very out of my element. I was greeted and helped by Shawn, who was great and answered all of my questions. He even let me go for a test ride, which totally had me sold. Instantly fell in love with the All City Pony Express. I returned a few days later to purchase, Giovanni was in and set everything up, explained all the little things I would have never thought to ask, and patiently put up with my almost impressive ability to be excessively indecisive. Which, for me, are all very comforting attributes when it comes to a salesperson. I get very nervous with large purchases, but King Kog provided the informed and relaxed environment that let me walk out with my new bike feeling good and confidant about my decision, not rushed or taken for a ride, which is a really great feeling! So, if you feel like an awkward beginner like me, I definitely recommend this spot. They don't deal in numbers like a normal bike shop, only quality, they don't sell anything short of the best here. If you're looking for a bike for your grandma, go to Metro Bicycles, if you're looking to shred, outfit your fixie at King Kog...or else build another fixie so your grandma can ride with you. They have or can probably get a lot of high end and hand made items like nitto jaguar components, dura ace, sugino, phil wood, and the oh so sought after aerospoke wheel - for all you card carrying hipsters (mine's on order!). On top of that they have some cool soft goods too, like messenger bags, gloves, cool cycling caps, and other sweet swag. Gina is an absolute sweetheart too. I've been coming here years and would've highly recommended it before today. Today I was assaulted by a black employee there. He was very rude about where I set up my bike and then I stared at him and he made a comment that a picture would be better so I went to take a picture of him and he hit me with a tire pump, striking my phone and my face. He then wanted to fight me, I'm trained in martial arts and exercised discipline and chose to laugh it off rather than destroying him. I really loved this place but I think I'll be going to B's Bikes or Silk Road Cycles from now on. Basically I'll go to any bike shop that doesn't employ aggressive, violent individuals who feel it's okay to assault customers. UPDATE: Spoke with Anna Maria, the manager at the store and the individual was not an employee but rather a customer who has been banned from the store since. Anna did everything she could to rectify the situation after the fact and to make me feel comfortable that I could go back to my neighborhood bike shop. I deeply appreciate her professionalism, compassion and understanding. It's clear that this was an isolated incident, management has handled the situation very appropriately and I would highly recommend King Kog. read more

King Kog is heat. This is by far my favorite bike shop in Brooklyn. For starters, it's run by Gina Marie Scardino. Not exactly a household name, but a certain breed of turn-of-the-century Brooklynite might recognize Gina as the drummer of Guts for Garters. A subsegment of that population might further recognize Gina as the drummer of Breaker! Breaker!, a short-lived Brooklyn outfit near and dear to my heart. They probably peaked when they opened for The Gossip at the Knitting Factory back in 2004 and then slowly receded into the shadows of time. I live in San Francisco now, but folks back east are still lucky enough to be able to drop in on Gina and the amazing King Kog store. They've got a perfectly and lovingly curated selection of top bike components, gear and apparel. They also have pitch-perfect, fully-built desiderata to stop by and gawk at. And Gina of course brings the heat. For newcomers, it's easy to dismiss King Kog as yet another hipster pretension. The truth, though, is that this place is legit. Gina's obviously a bike wonk, keeps informed, and studies cycling history. Where other stores sell random silliness like t-shirts showing birds and pandas riding fixies down the stem of a flower, Gina sells one tee featuring cycling gods and Tour de France legends, not out of some desire to be obscurantist or elitist, but because she's a genuine fan. King Kog predated the fad and will hopefully outlive it. read more

On bike forums back in London King Kog has a serious rep. It is rumoured to be the Aladdin's Cave of bike shops; stuffed with all that is shiny and sparkly. In reality it's ok, its fine, it's got the usual but nothing beyond. The most interesting thing was a putrid multicoloured awesome king kog top. 100% polyester, 100% lurid. Pretty damn awesome. Shame my arms were a meter too long Otherwise the frames stocked are the standard stuff and components lying around are a typical japanese/ US blend. Where are the NY bike shops who build their own frames. Where are the NY bikeshop who at the very least source some unique US made stuff? read more

I honestly don't know much so I figured I'd stop in and ask about finding the right size frame and setup for myself...seeing as I live two blocks away. This was my first and last time visiting this establishment. Obviously I was wasting their time because all I got were weird looks and no help at all. All I wanted was a little info and maybe an idea on size/style of cycle. I love King Kog! Been living close by for a while now, bringing my bike elsewhere for tune-ups but decided to bring it close to home and since I walk by King Kog like every day, I figured why not?! The price for the tune-up was super reasonable, they were fast (had it back to me the next day, and apologized that they couldn't have it ready the same day!) And, they told me what they did and made a couple recommendations for me to improve my beat-up commuter bike. They were super nice, and even kept the shop open an extra few minutes for me to run down the street to get it when they called at the end of their day. Made my first visit to King Kog this past weekend and was not disappointed. I called first to make sure they had the parts I wanted (sugino crank set) since the website said they were out of stock. I spoke to Gina about that and she said it's just a matter of time and updating inventory on the site. Nonetheless, it's good just to call to make sure something is in stock b/c chances are it will be. Gina was also kind enough to lend me just about every tool I needed to overhaul most of my drive train (couldn't do the bb, which I think is seized, but that's a different issue). Some shops I've gone into have a strict policy of not lending out their tools for personal use even if you're right there in the shop. But Gina was cool about it all. Like what Derrick c. said, it is a tiny tiny place. i'd say maybe, 20-30 square feet, if that. but that didn't matter, all about supporting the local bike shops. read more

I'm SO grateful for the patient, awesome employees at King Kog! An employee from their sister store, Sun & Air, let me know that they had bikes come in in my size this week, so I called and they said they had a few left. So I raced right over. Even though it was close to closing time, they still patiently helped me out, fitting the bike to me perfectly and telling me to take a test ride! As soon as I got on the bike I knew it was the one! My old bike was stolen 10 years ago in Pittsburgh and the experience traumatized me. Everyone who helped me was so awesome and knowledgeable, and they made sure I had a good lock, kickstand, lights, helmet, water bottle cage, a GREAT MAP--and I was all set within about an hour. I can't express my thanks enough. When I rode my bike around today I pretty much cried because it feels so great to be back on a bike. I know I can go back any time if something goes wrong. I had the good fortune last summer of flying out to the East Coast with my bicycle, and while there had the added bonus of visiting Trackstar and King Kog! The first thing I will say about this place is that it is TINY - think of the smallest brick-and-mortar bike shop you've ever been inside, and then quarter that. Despite its size and somewhat limited selection however, I was able to find a sweet Freight hip pouch (the irony of flying across the country to buy something made in San Francisco!) and the girl working and her friend were incredibly nice and eager to shoot the breeze, telling me stories about riding in New York and helping me map out a route to Coney Island on my bike. If you're from San Francisco and are expecting Freewheel or Box Dog in terms of selection, then prepare to be disappointed - check out Trackstar for that. However, I rate this place so highly just because they were so damned friendly and helpful, and couldn't care less if you roll in with a front brake. read more
