Made the drive to Washington to try this famous local spot - the building itself is pretty rundown, parking spots a bit limited. You order at the window and wait to hear your name hollered. The young lady that placed our order was not friendly. Period. Borderline rude and made it pretty clear she didn't want to be at work. Onto the food - the fried chicken was good, the corn nuggets very yummy. Didn't care for the potato salad. The yellow cake with chocolate frosting was average, didn't finish it. Not sure we'd eat here again.

We have visited King Chicken twice, once for breakfast and recently for dinner. Every dish, from the cheese biscuits to the fried chicken, hush puppies, and cinnamon rolls, was spectacularly delicious! I'm eager to try the sweet potato biscuits, rumored to be available only one day a week. King Chicken has become a must-visit for me whenever I'm in Washington, NC. This is carry-out only, and be aware that the online ordering system will let you place an order for items that are sold out. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was informed that two items I ordered were sold out, but they allowed me to substitute for different items.

OMG, we loved Kings - definitely a must stop if you're in the area. I ordered a couple of Chix Thighs that came with one of their delicious Cat Head Cheese biscuits, also a side of Hush Puppies and a small Sweet Potato Pie. Super nice staff, huge menu and delicious southern food. Everything was so yummy and definitely the best sweet potato pie I've ever had. So yep, we'll be back, next time we're in NC.

Wow! Friendly service for the win! First timer as I am visiting from out of town. I had heard they are known for their biscuits (I plan to go for breakfast one day this week) but we stopped in for lunch. I got the fried chicken sandwich, side of Mac and cheese and tater tots! All of that for a little over $10! The Mac and cheese reminded me of homemade from my Granny's house, the tots were hot and crispy and the fried chicken was perfect! Order was fast and fresh, and there was even a friendly group of gentleman out front playing a game of checkers. Small town charm at its finest.

This place is old school! Great value! Food was pretty good, I especially liked the desserts. The burger was ok, have had better, but a good deal. They give a lot of fries! Will be back when in the area!

Chicken Biscuit - BIG & Juicy!!!

This is one of those Southern places that everyone must come to as a foodie destination. It's such a classic old skool walk up and order food stand. Yes quite like the burger places were/are and they do have burgers here. Actually they have an enormous menu fit for any family to enjoy. I've had the chicken biscuit here and it's a monster. You won't need lunch anytime soon after eating it. Huge piece of juicy breast is sandwiched under a flaky fall apart biscuit. Their chicken salad is famous and when I close my eyes I swear my Grandmother just served it to me. I've also opted for the sausage link egg & cheese biscuit and it's good. The cheese biscuit is cheesy AF. I'll be coming back to try their fried chicken, cheeseburger, fries, basically everything that they have. Def come to the KING and let me know what you think. Till next time....

Jessie Bell's Soul Food Restaurant - Baked Mac & Cheese and baked chicken breast with cabbage and hush puppies

Jessie Bell's Soul Food Restaurant

I ordered pig feet for lunch and Mac and cheese and cabbage. Overall, one to ten, I give it a…read moretwenty. The food was the best. The chicken is fried upon request. What I didn't like was the bathroom need drastic repairs as the door was rusting but the bathroom was clean. The outside windows on the restaurant needs advertising as the place looks abandoned from the outside and the soul food sign looks homemade. I also notice very few locals of a different culture eating there. Soul food is a cuisine because the food taste good not because you have soul in you, but for some reason the business is not attracting the culture locals. We went during lunch time and the place was empty. Shocked because there should have been a flood oF people out the door. I love neck bones and I love pig feat but the average person is not going to eat that for lunch, that's a dinner meal or a Sunday meal. Also, 20 minutes to cook chicken will not attract luncheoneers as they have only 30 minutes to pick up or an hour to eat. My take is 1. The owners have very little marketing experience 2. The owners don't have investors to help turn the business around 3. The owners may feel it's their way or the highway and reject listening to others ideas even their customers. I could be wrong but this is a fabulous restaurant with delicious food. However something great is missing in the infra structure By all means go there, the place is clean, warm and cozy and the staff is kind and the food is good. Second and third visit with others. We are honest food critics! Never any pun tended.. Chicken and dumpling: the best I ever tasted! Fried Trout. texture and portion good but I tasted no seasoning on the fish. If seasoned, I would buy it every time they have it. I had to add salt and pepper to the fish and it still wasn't seasoned. It tasted very bland, not soul food to me. Barbecue turkey: turkey not seasoned good but smothered in BBC sauce. I felt like I was tasting more sauce than good tasting turkey. I would not order again. Okra: not good, too many onions. Yams: didn't taste homemade but were good. However, you could tell they were can yams, again not expected of soul food. Cabbage: fabulous Mac cheese: good and firm with cheese topping, but needs to be more creamy, it was too firm, it looked like a Mac cake rather than creamy mac and cheese. Potato salad, ok but a little too sweet Chicken wings: texture great, crisp but again no seasoning, it wasn't finger licking good. I wouldn't order again, it didn't taste like home cooked fried chicken. It was chicken cooked right but batter had no kick to it, plain tasted and again I had to had salt and hot sauce and it didn't make a difference Major improvements: you can now see through the windows and see inside the restaurant. The building looks open for business, before it appeared as if they were close for the season as their windows looked coated or dark. You can even see people eating through the windows which is great for those looking to see activity before stopping. Further suggestions. Have a sample tasting day on your busiest day and offer very smallllll portions and ask to rate. 1= need more seasoning and 2= best taste ever..if they don't say 2 you must reinvent that dish..just saying.. Just because a dish looks good doesn't mean it taste good. Get feedback from customers and your restaurant will be the most talked about in town.

Delicious home cooking. Very friendly staff. Jessie is a lovely human being. She really brings…read morethe sunshine to that place. They have a cult following in the Kinston. Definitely my top spot for lunch. I would highly recommend their fish stew and turkey wings.
