First of all, we look up at the menu board and no prices are shown. So, you order and then find out what they want to charge you for it? Next, we order a child's meal. The server asked what side. We say Mac & cheese. We get to the register and tell them it's a child's meal. The person at the register says they have to ring it up item-by-item since Mac & cheese is "extra". All I wanted was a pork chop, a rib or two, and a slice of brisket. Only rib option was a half rack, even though they have a 2 rib option on the menu. Half a pound of brisket was the minimum order, even though quarter pound is on the menu. So I ended up with 50 dollars worth of mostly inedible BBQ. The pork chop had the taste and consistency of sawdust, the half rack was so tough, I gave up after I struggled to eat maybe a quarter of it, and half of the brisket was fat, another quarter was so dried out it may as well have been jerky. Probably not my worst food experience in 50+ years, but it's very high on that list. read more

It was AWFUL. The pot roast was so greasy and had globs of fat in it. The collards were bland. The stuffing would have made Amazon proud as a filler. The fried thighs made us want to go to Bojangles. It's so good I have been here two days in a row and will go by again today for lunch. Yes, I have been impressed with this BBq restaurant. My first visit was about a year ago. At that time, I got a bbq rib plate with 2 sides. I got it again yesterday. Monday, I got the bbq pork plate with 2 sides which I will get again today. It's generous portion that they give you. If you're passing through Little Washington NC and are craving some BBQ, let me highly recommend that you stop by and give this place a try. We had the BBQ sandwiches which were delicious and reasonably priced. The sandwich probably had a half pound of BBQ(2 inches thick). Unfortunately I am sad to say that my meal of ribs was totally unsatisfactory. I have always loved Boss Hog's and have looked forward to their ribs. However they are now smoked/grilled or whatever??? until they are hard as a rock, literally "dry as a bone" and it is impossible to cut the ribs apart. They slapped a little sauce on them on their way to the steam table. They used to cook them in their wonderful sauce and they were juicy, tender and meaty. Save your money and make the drive to Deadwood in Bear Grass for their ribs. You get more, the ribs are meatier than most, tender and not dry. They are "fall off the bone" tender and moist. The $ is the same but the ambiance of the western theme is certainly more pleasing and worth the drive and the wait, since they are only open Th thru Sun. I complained to staff and they did replace with another "freshly cooked" half rack but they were just the same so I have to surmise that it is the quality of the meat and their current cooking method. There were two other customers that had the ribs and they too were complaining and saying the ribs used to be moist and juicy with the previous cooking method. I hope Boss Hog's will reconsider and go back to their original cooking method. I have not gotten their chopped Barbeque in a while but it was good with the sauce on it. I do like their stewed potatoes, green beans, collards, apples and the hush puppies. They are "southern cooked" which I am used to. read more

They have a drive-thru! :) you can also order inside. I came craving fish (lol( on a Wednesday around dinner time, 6:30 pm. There was about 5 people in front of me, and we kept a little distance between us all. The line doesn't move fast, but I guess that's partly due to the people in front of me not knowing what they wanted to order. I ordered the fried trout tray, which is $10.99 ($11.74 after taxes). They had a special for a two-piece trout plate, so ask about that (I can't remember how much it was :/). The tray comes with two sides of choice and hush puppies. I ordered greens and slaw. The trout is cooked fresh, so there's always a short wait for fried fish. The piece of fish is really big, and the serving size is a little more than you can/should eat in one sitting, but don't we all love leftovers? The slaw is kept in a display case with the potato salad and cake, so it wasn't as cold as I would have liked, but it was very good. The collards were very very good! Tastes like someone's aunt Shirley made them! I was served 5 hush puppies and they were greasy and yummmmy!! I trout was also perfect (but my grandma said her piece had a few scales on them but good otherwise. I would give my tray 2 thumbs up and 5 stars. But the true standout star was the carrot cake. Have heard about East Carolina Barbeque for many years. It is definitely different than what I am used to getting in KY. In fact it is different from BBQ that I have had in any other state. The vinegar based sauce doesn't take anything away from the flavor of the pulled pork. I must say that I liked it very much. I've also never had hush puppies with BBQ. Back home hush puppies are almost exclusively served with seafood. They too were quite tasty. Crispy little nuggets of flavor. For sides I had the collard greens and mac-n-cheese. Both were very good. I have always been a huge fan of greens but especially kale and collards. These did not disappoint. I am glad that Covid has not closed this place down. read more

I had the worst service there tonight. They were not busy when I went in and ordered. Had to wait on hamburger steak but did not mind. I was told it would take 20 minutes and I agreed. After 25 minutes no hamburgers in a plate for me even though I waited for them. Then lady in back wanted to argue with me she had just brought them out. I asked did anyone communicate with anyone a customer was waiting on them. After a conversation that got heated between her and I she told them to fix my plates so I would leave. Local business with country cooking. No table service, order/pay/pickup in the line. I ordered the barbeque plate with rice and gravy and fries as the sides. Good barbeque, ample portion and flavor. Staff was efficient, but not welcoming, There were three of us there for the first time, and they looked a bit impatient as we looked at the board with the daily specials and at the menu board behind the counter to determine what we wanted. Speaking of signs, I tend to be a little put off by local restaurants with some of their signage. For example on the hand written board, it stated that collards or macaroni and cheese as sides were $ .50 extra due to "increased food costs" (something like that). Really? Mac & cheese requires a $ .50 surcharge? The other large sign on the glass over the buffet line foods says "if you are talking on your cell phone we will not serve you - we will go to the next person." OK I get the frustration when you are trying to serve someone while they talk on the phone, but I feel that the sign is negative and rude. If the business really needed a sign to address cell phone usage in line a simple "please no cell phones usage while ordering" is polite and more professional. Also be aware that this is primarily a lunch restaurant. Non - summer hours have the place closing by 7:30pm - certainly not an option for those that like their dinner at a later hour. read more

I've stayed at the quality inn next door a few times for work but didnt make it over here because i am not a fan of eastern carolina and virginia bbq. But Last night i checked in at 3 am and there was a guy over here getting the bbq going. I was kinda impressed. So i decided to do lunch here. They have an open spread behind the counter and you tell them what you want. Pretty quick and nice people. I got the bbq plate (pork) with potato salad and cole slaw. The potato salad is good but typical of every other potato salad from everywhere else. The slaw is minced into tiny little bits which is not my first choice but its common, and it was sweet and creamy. Now the bbq. Now if you are not from here let me describe this areas bbq type. It is all pork as god originally intended bbq to be before texas messed it up with brisket. But here they take perfectly good bbq and cut it up into tiny pieces, then they beat the hell out of it until its mush. Then pour on a vinegar based sauce. Its not different here. The bbq mush is inedible without sauce. So get a bit of sauce, get it at the counter, there is none on the table. The sauce here tastes like a watered down vinegar and honey mix. There was a lot of things not ok, with our visit, but let's start when we arrived there was a hand sanitizer station by the exit door- it was empty. Flies were flying all around where the food window was. Despite our better judgment, we ordered. I got a pulled pork sandwich and fries my husband ordered a pulled pork plate with slaw and bruinswick stew I think. We both had tea. When we were at the register to pay, we noticed a woman come from the back with mac n cheese to refill. She wasn't wearing gloves and after touching her face she grabbed a hush puppy that went rogue into another food's section and goosed it back in with the other hush puppies. After she attempted to clean up the rest of the foods that had gone rogue she walked off. I went to the restroom where there was no toilet paper in any of the stalls, the first toilet kept running the whole time I was in there and was filled with toilet paper, the second one was over filled as well. There was also no soap. The pork was dry, the fries were burnt and overall to say this place was a let down is an understatement. Never have I ever been treated so well by a resturant. I had a huge last minute order and the ladies inside new me by name and treated me so well. Good value and good food. BBQ plate piled with meat. Sauce really tangy like I like it. Mac and cheese is the real thing. BBQ ribs are St. Louis style and hubby ranks them four and a half stars. I ordered the 3 meat platter, 1/2 rack ribs, dark chicken and chopped bbq were my choices with green beans and mac & cheese all orders come with hush puppies. Though small the chicken leg was well seasoned and tasty, the half rack of ribs (St. Louis style) was dry and rubbery with little flavor very disappointing, the savior of the trio was the chopped bbq with excellent flavor and that vinegar tingle of Carolina bbq.
