This place looked cool from the outside but is honestly not worth the money at all. I've never left a bad review before so please know this was that bad. The first thing that sketched me out was that it is cash only. It was very confusing and the menu was very random. I tried the burger and the options were small or large, no in between, our server definitely lied and said "it's not really that big" and then I got a burger the size of my head. The meat was dry, the cheese was just some Walmart singles, bun was mushy. My husband got the Philly cheesesteak and he is not picky at all and he barely ate half of it. I stopped going to Cubbies because the wait staff and woman in charge all have bad attitudes. I have dined there numerous times and have tipped very well. They all know this yet are totally indifferent to me being there. A short curly haired fellow with painted finger nails rolls his eyes when asked if I could get a drink refill. My first time visiting North Carolina, I came here with my sister and her boyfriend, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. Upon entering we stood awkwardly staring at the staff for a moment and then were greeted by what looked like a manager (he was very nice and efficient). Service quickly went downhill, when in the matter of 6 minutes our drinks were taken and our order; very fast paced. To say the word "hovering" would be an understatement; I don't know how a place could be so attentive yet manage to be completely unhelpful. We were asked numerous times if we needed anything (six total) including attempts to clear our food while we had barely been eating for 10 minutes. We asked for drink refills two times, which were met with annoyed expressions (despite the server initiating). The overall environment felt very rushed, despite us being one of only four tables seated, and everything was met with irritation. At the register my sister was greeted by one of the two ladies (the other was standing beside her). She took the ticket and manually entered the items instead of a written breakdown or a receipt which felt odd and lacked transparency. Our total was $32, which seems a bit overpriced to me for the food we got, specifically the 4-inch-sized cheesesteak (there was a decent amount of meat to be fair) and a chicken sandwich that didn't even have a patty but rather two chicken strips. While up there, she asked for a to-go container, which was met with yet again another aggravated tone, and was withheld from her until she finished paying. My sister; full time server, still gave them a very generous tip (30%), which was met by an unfriendly "thanks." We also weren't acknowledged when leaving. I've lived in Greenville during two separate periods of my life. In between those periods - one in the mid-80s when I was attending ECU - and the current one that started in 2017 when my wife wanted to return to teach at ECU - I have lived all over the US. The places included major food cities. San Francisco, Chicago, Nashville- among several other smaller metro areas. Cubbies opened during the first time we lived here. We ate there a lot back then. I'm happy to report that I ate there again for lunch today. In all my travels over the decades, I have NEVER had a better cheeseburger than the one I had today. It was perfect. Come here with cash only. They don't take credit cards nor debit cards. They do have an ATM machine in here but it didn't work for me for some reason and it definitely isn't because of insufficient funds. Anyway, I have been here 3 times and I am ready to review this restaurant. Each time, I got the same menu items. I ordered the hamburger steak with gravy, onions, mushrooms and peppers. Along with onion rings, hush puppies and a salad with ranch dressing. It was delicious. On scene: They have 7 TVs, a bar, an outside covered patio, 2 waitresses, 1 owner, 2 cooks, 2 ceiling fans, 1 manager. History: The manager told me that they have been in business for over 20 years at this location. It's in a great location too. If it wasn't for Yelp, I would have never known it was here. Finally got to this local landmark for it's well known cheesesteak! It was absolutely delicious! Ive had the real deal in Philly and Cubbie's will definitely fulfill your cravings. There was no grizzle or fat in the meat and even though they don't use cheese whiz, the orange american is hot and smothered in the meat while they're cooking it. Less messy than on top if you ask me. The roll was soft enough it didn't feel like work trying to eat the sandwich. Other good thing is the bread was dry. Not sopping wet with grease and you don't wanna eat it. They chop the meat down really fine. Peppers, onions and mushrooms yes please! The owner came over and introduced himself, welcomed us etc. That says a lot too. They've been in business 32 yrs. lots of TVs and an outdoor patio. I've only been here once and what I had was pretty darn good. We decided to sit outside because inside looked pretty crowded. (I will say that I'm glad I did because when I went in to pay, it looked pretty dingy.) The server came out to greet us and hand us our menus after we'd taken our seats. Service is really fast, even for outside. There were three servers coming and going every couple of minutes - to serve the food and to just check up on the patrons. I ordered the small cheesesteak combo. Combos come with a side of fries and choice of drink - I went with sweet tea. The drink is larrrrrge. The cheesesteak was a little smaller than half the size of your average cheesesteak. It came with grilled onions, mushrooms, green peppers, and cheddar cheese. The bun couldn't be seen under all of this though. So they do a pretty good job of giving you your fill of stuffings, which is always always a plus. The bun could've been a little more toasted but it was still good. The cheesesteak itself was excellent too. My friend is a native Philadelphian and she said this is the closet to an original Philly cheesesteak she could find in the area. Minus the cheddar cheese in place of the provolone, and I'll say she's about right. The meat was perfect - because of the look of the place, I thought the meat wouldn't be very good and would be stringy and hard to chew. Never judge a book by its cover, right? It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Let's not forget the side! The fries had the crisp crunch! It's not seasoned, which I was grateful for - but there are salt and pepper shakers and ketchup bottles at the table for you to season as you please. Atmosphere-wise, it's the perfect place to come to with your friends to pop a beer and watch the game. There was a family and an elderly couple when I went, but they were watching the game on TV too. Visited G-Vegas for the day and had lunch with an ECU Grad at Cubbies per her wishes. Her favorite Cubbies in downtown G-Vegas is no longer, much to her chagrin, so we went the secondary location. Attentive staff, and the Restaurant is charming in a retro sort of way. Ordered the following:Philly Cheese Steak and Order of Fries (upcharge). 3 Star-Good sandwich sans onions! Not really a true Philly. Fried Chicken Tenders, Fresh Fruit and Fries. 3 Star- Tenders were cafeteria grade, Fries were scarce, but the Fresh Fruit hit the spot. If only they took CCs I would eat here more often!! My husband loves their hot dogs. My 4 year old loves their grilled cheese. And I love their cheeseburger with mustard and extra chili and slaw. They only accept cash or checks, which I think is so backwards in a college town. Also, it gets super busy and the crowd and wait sometimes isn't worth it if you are really hungry.
