They just recently opened within the past few weeks sometime in May of 2018 so everything is new and in good shape. Good quality sushi and sea food in general is pretty rare to find at a buffet due to the economics of the business model, but they offer some pretty delightful options that are well worth the price. Let's get the most important question answered right off the bat.. in my opinion which is the correct one, new china just up the street is still the best place in the area.. I gave it a honest shot as far as the buffet goes and its a nice, new and clean but overall the food has a slight "weird" flavor to me but again it just my correct and factual opinion. I didn't hate it but was expecting it to be a bit better. I will say that the beef fare seems to be undercooked a bit still had a decent flavor by u could tell it was undercooked. They have a nice hibachi setup which is probably their best effort but I just wanted to stick with the usual buffet type stuff for this review. King Buffet was built in 2018. I visited for the first time 1 week after opening. They were very organized. The food was fresh and tasty. I was there for lunch and the options did not disappoint! The staff is a mix of Asian decent and American decent; so if you don't speak Chinese they still treat you like family! Some Asian restaurants can be rude due to the language barrier. However, King Buffet staff was very friendly and had great communication skills. There are more sushi options than any other sushi buffet. They use real fish like Salmon, Cod, Snapper, and Eel. They also had seaweed salad that wasn't diluted with green rice noodles. It was just seaweed. It was very fresh and delish! Some buffets will add green noodles to thin out their seaweed salad to make it go farther; but not at King Buffet! (See Pics) The Mongolian grill had a ton of options; more than anyone else in Birmingham. There was also a large selection of sauces to use. For a buffet in town, this one has the #1 spot since it's grand opening. It is very clean, the service was nice, they didn't try to force fill your drink constantly. They let you mingling around and it didn't feel like a robotic feeding encounter. The selection of food was quite nice. It was all hot and visual appealing. The serving areas where clean along with the plates and utensils. They quickly refill items on the buffet. They had a good selection of items and flavors. As well as items for kids. The grill area had lots of items to choose from and they quickly prepared the food! They have not been open long however the place has been packed when driving by and when we have eaten there! I am so sorry to see that other guests have not had good experiences here. I went with a group of neighbors last week, and we absolutely loved the food. The variety is incredible here. We kept saying to one another, "They have EVERYTHING!" I did not try the Mongolian BBQ because I had eaten it at another restaurant a few days earlier. I normally do not eat sushi, but my friend said the sushi was very fresh. I tried it and really enjoyed it. Everything I ate was delicious. There is SO MUCH to choose from. Do not go here unless you are hungry. I did notice one dirtied plate on top of one of the many stacks of plates at the stations. I thought the dining room was very clean. The service was very, very good. They were quick to remove used dishes from our table. Very pleasant dining room staff. They do need to clean up the parking lot. To be an all you can eat buffet, the prices are really good. It was around $8 bucks a person for lunch. Dinner prices are a little more, but you get better options, like crab. I've never seen a sushi selection so large at a buffet restaurant, and it is of good quality (not like a sushi restaurant, but very good for all you can eat). They even have an unlimited, build your own plate, hibachi grill. We went around 11:30, so all the food was very fresh. The staff was very tentative and didn't allow our plates to pile up or our drinks to empty. The place is spacious and very clean. The only reason for 4 stars- I've been here for dinner twice and the food wasn't that fresh. I recommend going for lunch. read more

Tonight I ate dinner here with my little brother and my boyfriend. Our waiter gave us our bill and walked away. We paid with cash and left the cash in the bill folder on the table. We walked out. As we were driving out of the parking lot, a worker ran after our car and asked us "why haven't we paid." We stated that we left our cash and tip in the bill folder on our table. He wouldn't allow us to leave out of the parking lot without calling into the restaurant to make sure we were telling the trip. Important to mention that we were the only Black family in the restaurant. Instead of checking the bill folder to see if we left cash, the waiter assumed me just dined and dashed because we were no longer at our table when he came back to our table. I went here with a large group for a graduation lunch. This was my first time going to this buffet (I've been to the other one down the road). This one is by far nicer inside, feels cleaner, and has better cooked food. My usual order of things is starting with a main buffet plate, sushi, hibachi, desert. While on the main buffet plate, despite there being a large selection of food. It felt like there were a couple things that I normally get were missing. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but it definitely felt like there was something missing. The sushi was above par for a buffet. Although still not amazing, this is probably the best buffet sushi I've seen. The hibachi was great! Lots of choices and the food was cooked great! The hibachi chef seemed like everything pissed him off but I'm not sure if it was just a bad day or if that's just how he is. Our waiter was pretty average. He filled my half drunken sprite with water lol and I couldn't find him again to get a sprite. Overall I'd give this place a 3.5. I can have a firm that King buffet is a fantastic buffet and wonderful place to eat. They have a huge selection of buffet items, everything from Mongolian staples to more Americanized cuisine. Furthermore, the restaurant has an in-house hibachi, free of charge, although tips are expected, where you pick out raw foods that you wish for the hibachi chef to cook for you, and you retrieve it when they are finished cooking; that is all included as part of the restaurant experience. Furthermore, again, King Buffet also offers an extensive sushi buffet of which I tried every piece, and I can wholeheartedly affirm, that I was pleasantly and surprisingly satisfied with all they had to offer. And of course, in the end, my check was under $10 for a lunch buffet. There not much more that you could ask for. King Buffet is certainly going to be a revaluation joint for me to head to when I'm craving food Asian buffet, and is where I can certainly recommend to anyone interested in the same. read more

Came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon, and it was pretty busy but we were seated immediately upon arrival. The interior looks clean and newly renovated, and the food stations were also clean and orderly. There was a station for southern cuisine like Mac N Cheese, sweet potato casserole, pizza etc. There were lots of Chinese take-out type food (orange chicken, teriyaki chicken etc) but the Mongolian stir fry was pretty good! I liked being able to customize my order to my liking and there were a multitude of ingredients and sauces to choose from! I'm generally suspicious of anywhere that serves sushi that isn't near a body of water, but I tried some of the sashimi and it was okay. I really enjoyed the squid salad though! Probably my favorite thing I had from that area of the buffet. There's a station for ice cream, sweets and fresh fruit for dessert. Overall, I'd give this place a 3.5 rating. I tried a few different things from the buffet but by this time, I was pretty full. I ended my dinner with ice cream. I would have to say that this place is better than New China mainly because of the open tops, sauces, fresh sushi- that you can watch the guys making in front of you, and the new-ness. It's a breath of fresh air. **The biggest thing that I was impressed by besides the space, freshness and taste of food, and the nice staff was our waitress. I had my two children with me, 2 and 6 months old. I had to give my 6 month old a bottle but it was cold. The waitress noticed I had a baby and cake over. Just got up from the lunch buffet, I enjoyed my meal. However, there are a few hiccups that need to be addressed. Sushi, the rice is too tightly compressed, making the sushi n the rolls very dense and heavy. Mongolia Grill, everything over cooked, making the calamari unpleasant. I have never been so utterly disappointed by a restaurant in my entire life. To treat children with such utter disregard for their humanity is deplorable. I went to this awful establishment and sat for buffet. We got to billed portion and our party had 3 kids and 2 adults. They tried to bill the children as 3 adults. When the mother spoke up that her children were not adults and met the age qualifications for children, the cashier told the mother and I quote, "I'm not going to believe you that your children are that age" and proceeded to try to charge her children like adults. To add insult to injury, she decided to take it a step further which added trauma to the child involved to directly ask the child who met the age requirements to prove that she was that age and the child was completely frightened because this was a true fact but how does a child prove they are 11 when there are no such ideas. Until I spoke up, the lady continued to try to charge the mom for and talk to this black family with disgust and disdain. This was brought to her attention as I put my own reputation and assured that I picked all of them up from school so I know their ages. I further told her that she owes the child an apology. She refused to apologize or stop talking to this black family with utter disrespect. I asked for a manager, and she refused to give me a name. I asked for another employee to give me a manager, and she claimed she didn't know who the manager was. I told her that the way she handled this black family was downright awful and she should really do some soul searching. She never apologized not once to the Black family, the black child she interrogated without the mother's permission, and the trauma she caused that child is irreparable. I hope you do not consider patronage of this establishment no matter what because no one's children should be treated this way. To not have the human decency to apologize for a very wrong assumption speaks volumes to the character of the employee who works there, and I demand she be terminated off the principle of blatant disregard for company values and the piss poor of customers no matter their race or creed which is not an ethical business practice to use your personal prejudice cause unnecessary trauma to your customers. read more

While it's not as fancy as a standalone sushi place, keep in mind, this is a buffet, and for such a place, it's quite good. The grill area offers plenty of options for freshly prepared grilled foods.
