All-time famous take-out spot in Birmingham. I did a pick-up order on a Wednesday afternoon. Inside is much nicer than I'd guessed - would definitely be a dinner vibe. They were playing modern pop-country hits as I waited a few min for my order. I got the mongolian beef, which could have been a little bit more flavorful, especially since it was marked spicy on the menu. Still good, though. The fried rice was about what you'd expect for takeout Chinese. All in all, this place scratches the itch. read more

Shangri-La - Chinese Near Me - Irondale, Alabama

See all

The most mediocre Chinese food I've ever eaten. Even the crab rangoons were super plain.

A friend called this morning and asked about meeting later for lunch. This restaurant was suggested. Hadn't visited in a long while and thought it'd be a good option. Pleasantly surprised upon entry about how clean the interior was throughout the restaurant. Wait staff were very courteous and polite. Lunch Specials were served in hearty portions. Each entree was accompanied with Fried Rice, choice of Egg Drop Soup or Hot & Sour Soup and Egg Roll. Definitely have to return one night to sample their dinner menu. read more

Been going here for over 20 years! Always the best food and great service! Tried a dish I had never ordered before in all these year a couple of weeks ago. On the Chefs Special part of the menu, We ordered the pork tenderloin. It was outstanding and is now my new favorite dish! read more

I recently ordered lunch from Shangri-Li through DoorDash and had one of my favorite meals: chicken lo mein with crab rangoons. The food was excellent, as it always is. The chicken lo mein tasted very authentic, with perfectly cooked chicken and fresh vegetables that added great flavor and texture. The vegetables are honestly some of the best I've had from a Chinese restaurant, and everything tasted fresh and well prepared. The crab rangoons were crispy and delicious, making them the perfect side to the meal. Since I ordered through DoorDash and had it delivered to work, I didn't get to experience the restaurant's ambiance, but the ordering process was easy and my food arrived quickly and in great condition. The portions are huge, which makes the slightly higher price feel completely worth it. Overall, I would definitely recommend Shangri-Li to anyone looking for a really good Chinese meal. read more

Shangri-La is solid for Chinese food takeout. I placed my order for Shrimp Fried Rice and an order of egg rolls. This is my go to if nothing else grabs my attention. My order was ready pretty fast despite there being a steady flow of people. The staff is friendly and hardworking. I really enjoyed my food. Nice portion sizes. The inside is back open for dine in. They are closed on Saturday. It's been years since I've come here but I'm happy to see that they survived those crucial Covid years. Shangri- La is one of the best places in town to grab some delicious /quality Chinese food. read more

Used to be good but I tried to eat takeout from her 3 times since Covid and it was horrible , once I honestly thought it was unsafe . It smelled off! I just stopped trying . Not sure if the owners sold this or what bud I can't recommend anymore . read more

I enjoyed the Mongolian beef and fried rice. I wasn't expecting the egg drop soup to have chicken and shrimp in it, it was different but not bad. read more

Some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Ended up throwing it away. Inedible. Had it before and thought I'd give it a second chance. Hard pass read more

Don't go here! They are racist and have horrible customer service. The treatment my family received today was unacceptable. They did not care to correct the food after my mother received food was under cooked. Then was rude when checking out. And the food we were able to eat wasn't even good. People of color do yourself a favor go somewhere else. read more

My first criticism is that when I went to look at their menu on Yelp, it was totally unreadable. My second criticism is I ordered a quart of egg drop soup, and when I got home and opened it, I saw they put shrimp in it. Why?! Who asked them to do that? I'm allergic to seafood. I wanted a simple egg drop and now I couldn't eat it. Please inform your customers that you are doing this! read more

First time ordering and they completely got my order wrong. I ordered hot and sour soup but got egg drop with a shrimp. Gross. Then the sweet and sour chicken came plane with no sauce. And lastly they delivered to my neighbor and I had to walk over. Will not be ordering here again as the service and food were awful. read more

Orange lemon chicken special was something new I tried and enjoyable. The wings are always great, they have a slightly sweet taste to them. I do wish the lettuce wraps had a bit of a lighter filling. The filling feels like a separate dish that doesn't accompany the lettuce wrap the way I would like. Overall it was good as always. read more

Always my go to for take out Chinese. Haven't been in SO long but ordered the summer roll and Szechuan combination. Always so god and reasonable prices! Ready in 15. Always on phone taking orders though but she made them wait and took my money so I could head home! read more

Shangri La is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Their fried chicken is fabulous. Their sweet n' sour soup is the best in town. One of my favorite dishes is Chicken Egg Foo Young. The best I can describe that dish is to say it tastes like a Chinese omelette. Don't knock it. Instead, try it. It is delicious. It's served with a sweetish duck sauce that is the perfect compliment. If this restaurant is not on your must try list please add it. read more

The crispy sesame chicken is delicious! The rice sides are generous- could definitely share.

My Food was so good! The best Kung Pao chicken I've had in a long time with the right level of spice and sweet. I stopped in last night for a late bite after a long day and staff made everything so smooth. The service was impressive and the staff were attentive in meeting my needs. read more

Took a large group of people there. Food was delicious, but if they had an additional server, the service would have been so much better. I suppose it's just the nature of things today. read more

Holy Moses this place is slow. We've been here twice in the last few months and each time they were understaffed. One server is running around waiting on all the tables stopping by just long enough to complain about the speed of the kitchen, dropping food and running away. This isn't hyperbole. She literally runs around, breathing heavily, not cute, or funny. It's just really stressful. . They serve good American style Chinese food. The menu also includes sushi and other Asian foods. Tonight I ordered extra, extra spicy Kung Pao beef. It was mild enough for small children so this is clearly not the place for pepper heads. Most people will be very happy with the food but there are better choices in town for those wanting traditional Chinese. read more

My mom, son and I went to Shangri-La for lunch on a recent Friday. We were seated quickly and ordered from the lunch menu. Our soups and egg rolls came quickly and with a nice plate of crunchy strips. I had the hot and sour soup and it was very good and perfectly spiced for me. The egg roll was pretty typical but tasty. It took our entries quite a while to come out. I had the Mongolian beef and it was a bit sweet but delicious. The portion size was perfect for lunch. It was nice to sit by the window even if the service was a bit slow. I would definitely go back for lunch again. read more

Shangri-La is always dependable on the items I always order. I get Take E outie maybe 3-5 times a year and I really have zero complaints. What Maria said... Served left over general Tso's chicken from lunch. Hard as a rock and overcooked. Terrible customer service. Told us it was our problem when we brought up the fact our egg drop soup had chicken and shrimp in it. Go to China Moon in southside. Go anywhere but here. read more

Great lunch, nearby where I work. Shangri-La is in a small strip mall. Food for lunch comes from a menu with a bout 30 combo plates. You get choice of hot and sour soup, egg drop soup and one other. You get an egg roll and a chicken wing. Didn't really understand the chicken wing but I also didnt have a problem eatiti it either! I ordered the Sesame Chicken, Egg drop soup and my little chicken wing! All well prepared, flavorful and tasty. It wasn't over the top but it was all very well done. Usually sesame chicken has sesame seeds on it, this did not, which I found unusual but it did not impact the mean in the slightest. The decor was very clean, and well taken care of. Two salt water fish tanks while a little kitchy were pretty to look at. I mean let's be honest, it's not good food without a fish tank right? Huh? No? So I will surely come back again for lunch as the food is good, hot and served incredibly fast! I was very impressed. read more

We were starving and it didn't fulfill our yummy needs. We ordered Broccoli Chicken, Hunan Pork, Combination Platter Appetizers, and sweet and sour chicken. They were all bland, coming from someone who doesn't like very much salt/seasoning. We couldn't finish it. Highly disappointed and would not recommend. read more

Been eating here for years! Everyone is super nice and the service is wonderful. We get takeout about once a month and they are always so attentive. They keep your phone number in their system which makes it easy to order with your address on file. Their vegetable soup seems like a boring thing to order, but has tons of veggies and tons of flavor. They have added sushi as well and we will be ordering for years to come! read more

I ordered the lovers shrimp for takeout. The dish was split by orange slices in the middle, with a sweet sauce on one half, and a mildly spicy sauce on the other half (I got it extra spicy). Fresh ingredients, ready in 10 min, and delicious. Little pricey at $15 all-in. read more

We order from here frequently due to the location to our home and delivery. While it isn't the best in Birmingham, we've found a few things we enjoy and get often. We order egg rolls, pork lo mein, and chicken fried rice and all are good consistently. We also order hot and sour soup which is hit or miss. Overall, convenient and delivery is reliable. The employees are always very kind and you get fast service. read more

Sad to say, this place has gone down hill. Aside from the torn booths and dirty tables, the food left something to be desired. While the waitress was friendly, she was also hovering and a bit pushy in removing plates before I was satisfied (not that I could be with what was served). I ordered the lunch special of Mongolian Beef, with egg drop soup. It came with a wing, and an egg roll. While the egg roll was the delight of my meal, the wing was cold and the egg drop soup tasted of liquidfied ginger. The mongolian beef was quite the shocker. While the dish is typically filled with onions anyways, I was surpised to find only five slices of meat...barely making 1/8 of the dish. It looked like it was thrown on the plate, as of serving leftovers, and it was nothing but a salty oily mess. The rice was hard, as of it had been left out too long or undercooked....or maybe both. I took a picture of the plate before digging in for reference. Not sure I will continue going back at this point. read more

Shangri-La - Chinese Near Me - Irondale, Alabama

This is the worst place to eat! I ordered general tso and egg drop soup for dinner for takeout. I realized they messed up my order since there is chicken and shrimp in my egg drop soup. I called and told them that they got my order wrong and informed me that they put chicken and shrimp in egg drop soup! Never in my life I've ever had chicken and shrimp in my egg drop soup. They have the worst customer service because they didn't not want to refund me back for the soup! They said it was "not their problem". The menu online didn't say what was in the soup and said that I should have asked what was in the egg drop soup! DO NOT COME HERE!!!! read more

I am not one to typically give a two-star review. Especially since the people have always been so nice. But I have now had the food enough times to say, Meh. I've experienced better. I hate that we don't love or even really like this place since it is by far the closest to our house. I honestly wish I could go back and remember all of the things we have tried. But I will go off of what I remember. Since we are typically fried rice people, that is what we ordered our first time. That paired with their egg drop soup (another staple) was not very good. And honestly prevented us from trying again a second time. We heard the lo mein was good so that is what we got our next trip. It was decent. But we also got sweet and sour chicken and Mongolian beef. The decent lo mein was not enough to overcome the underwhelming proteins. We finally decided to give it one more shot and asked friends who frequent it what they get. We followed their lead on the lo mein again and seasame beef this time. The lo mein was about like I remembered and the seasame beef had a strong cornstarch taste. Similar to the other meats we have had. We also ventured away from recommendation and got the crab angels. A huge glop of cream cheese was the consistency of these. We didn't even eat but on half a piece of those. We officially decided after this visit, that it is likely our last unless we hear something drastic. Again, I hate leaving bad reviews for establishments that have been around for years with friendly folks working. And I am happy they have the people that still love them. We are just not those people. read more

A once good restaurant gone bad! First, I must saw our waitress and the guy at the register were so nice! But the food is even wotse than last time I ate there. Over the past 7-10 years the quality has slipped to I will not goback again! Eggroll was ok, wonton soup- literally nothng but broth! My dinner partners said same thing about their hot and sour soup. I tried something different~ the curry chicken, and while the taste was flat and one dimensional, like curry traight from the jar, what was even worse is the overuse of chopped celery as filler. The dish should havebeen called curried celery. My dinner partners entree, the schzechuan special, should have been called schzechwan water chestnuts, because that is all there was. They desparately needsomeone in the kitchen to manage and who can cook to bring this once good chinese restaurant back to life! read more

We get takeout here a couple of times a month. Nothing to write home about, but it's good, standard issue American Chinese food. Hot and sour soup however is a stand-out because it includes 3-4 shrimp. We normally get the moo goo gai pan and the Mongolian beef. Both are tasty, but not the best I've ever had. Prices are fair and comparable to similar restaurants. read more

Part of the fun of visiting my folks in Birmingham is a major part of the day is choosing where to eat. They go out for dinner or lunch every day and they have their favorite spots. Dad raved about the lunch deal at this place so we visited yesterday. It's in a strip mall which has been there for years but is still considered new to me since I don't come to town very often. I loved reading in Evan F's review that this is owned by the same people who ran the China Garden, which I also have childhood memories of visiting with my family. Usually on Sunday nights for some reason. The lunch special is great. 6.95 for soup, an eggroll, a small piece of chicken, and an entree. I was boring and got sweet and sour pork with a bowl of egg drop soup. I tried my mother's hot and sour soup and it's pretty good. I wasn't given a choice about rice so I'm assuming brown or fried rice would be an additional cost. We were seated and served quickly. There wasn't a big crowd but there was a big table of businessmen and a few other tables. We were in the front room so there was a larger dining room in the back. Overall a pretty nice experience. read more
