This is a small restaurant, but the food is very good. My wife and I ordered from the Lunch Specials menu; she had Mandarin Chicken and I had Hunan Chicken. Both dishes were delicious, and the portions were hardy. The service was friendly and efficient. We hope to return soon to order dinner from the main menu. read more

I'm not sure how this place has received so many 5 star ratings. This had to be the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten and I've been to a lot of Chinese restaurants. I ordered three meals for the family and we all had the same consensus. The food had no taste. The fried rice was plain. The chicken was gristly and rubbery. I will not be back! read more

I'll start by saying we've never had a bad experience with the staff, always nice people. The food used to be good. I do not enjoy leaving a bad review. We've been eating Zou's for about 4 years. I used to like it well enough. But I've had a bad experience the last 4 times we've eaten there (spans a 6 month period). Today, I threw away everything without finishing it. The ingredients seem cheap and trashy these days, like eating junk food that doesn't even taste all that great. Today I tried volcano shrimp. These are deep fried with sauce and broccoli. Instead of being crispy, the batter was soggy and bloated. It tasted like it was fried in old, bitter oil. Every time I lifted a shrimp to eat it, the soggy, heavy breading just fell off in clumps. There was 3-4 times as much breading as there was shrimp, so when I did manage to eat an intact piece, I couldn't taste shrimp. So I started digging out the shrimp in order to eat it without the breading. The shrimp were tiny & tasted so old. The broccoli was still partially raw and no flavor. I also had a little veggie fried rice, egg roll, egg drop soup. Nothing tasted fresh or healthy. Low quality. Bad flavor. I didn't finish any of it. read more

After 2.5 years of living in Alabaster, we finally got around to trying Zou's Kitchen. We have a favorite in Alabaster, and my husband is always reluctant to try something new when he finds a place he likes, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to our usual haunts closing. Finally, I got a chance to try this place I drive past each week! Well, we've found a new favorite for Chinese food. We placed a pickup order similar to what we usually get from our standard restaurant: 4 entrees (3 adults, 1 child, and a desire for leftovers), 3 soups. We were in shock when they handed us the well-packaged bag of food: it was HEAVY. So many Chinese restaurants give small-ish portions of meat, coating their chicken and pork pieces in so much batter, it makes it look like twice as much as what it actually is. Not Zou's! On our General Tso's chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and orange chicken, the batter was a thin, crispy layer. Even the pork with garlic sauce had a good ratio of meat to vegetables, and the meat was VERY tender: no tough, gristly parts like you end up with from many restaurants. The taste was great on it all, for sure. Zou's definitely delivered on both quality and quantity of portions. It was well worth the extra drive and the *slightly* higher price. We'll definitely come back, even once the virus pandemic has settled and our closer spots have opened back up. Not to say we won't still go back to our old standby on occasion, but Zou's definitely made a big impression on our family. read more

Didn't feel like going out tonight, so we ordered Chinese takeout. Super nice staff and quick service. We ordered General So's chicken, sweet and sour chicken with fried rice and egg rolls. Very large portions. Enough to share it for two meals. Chicken was large chucks of white meat. Had to cut up to be able to eat. General So sauce was "warm" but not hot and spicy. Fried rice was so-so, very little veggies and egg mixed in. Egg rolls were hot and crispy. All in all, typical fast-food Chinese take out. Nothing to right home about, but did the job to scratch my Chinese food itch. read more

We have been eating at Zou's Kitchen since we moved to this area 20 years ago. It may not look like much on the outside, but locals know what a true gem it is. The food is hot, fresh, and very tasty. You can order online through their app, or call ahead. If you have time, dine-in for food fresh and hot straight from the kitchen - it's truly better than taking it home. Zou's is a small family-owned business, and they take pride in their excellent food and truly appreciate their customers. Our favorites are the Mongolian beef, cashew chicken, and steamed dumplings. The orange chicken is also excellent. Their hot and sour soup is the cure for whatever ails you. We always crave it when anyone in our household is sick. Just didn't cook and needed food on the way to my Dad's house. I got Kung Pao Shrimp add veggies. They add coating (corn starch) to their proteins prior to cooking which is not as appealing as one would think. I don't know why certain places do that but just regular sautéed shrimp, veggies, and sauce would suffice. The food was still delicious and flavorful. The fried rice was just okay. The girls love their lo Mein but the shrimp to noodle ratio was off lol. read more

They could be great if the order takers spoke Chinese and could communicate effectively with the kitchen! Are there twice this week...neither order was right. Close but no cigar! Left items paid for out of order...didn't care when I went back the next day to order again...just shrugged their shoulders and gave me a who cares blank stare! Ordered again (same thing) they screwed this one up a different way! Don't expect the pictures in the menu to actually look like the food you receive! They need to bring in bean sprouts for their chow mein and the egg foo yung. They have limited veggie options and use onions far too much for good Chinese. Their knife skills are non existent. Huge chucks of celery in everything...I'm talking inch and a half wide chunks that are never really cooked! If they actually fine tuned it this could be a great little take out! read more

So as a result of the positive reviews we saw in Yelp, and considering how close the restaurant is to our home, my wife and I decided to try Zou tonight; and I have to say that the reviews are pretty spot on. We had a nice time and will most certainly go back. The food was pretty good, and was prepared/served very quickly, with the help of one of the owners and her daughter(s). :) (I had the Mandarin Chicken, while my wife tried the General Tso's - both awesome... And we also got several egg rolls, which were great as well.) The place is kinda small but quaint in its own way, possessing a homey, relaxed vibe to it. (Example - several people came in for take-out orders and spoke to generally everyone in the restaurant [which was essentially us for a while...lol] when walking in. Kinda like a Chinese "Cheers" in reverse. lol.) The owner (or who I assume is the owner/owner's wife judging from the write-up on the place, near the register) was extremely kind and respectful, and made us feel like she was very happy to have our business. Even if the food had been less than stellar, the attitude of Zou would have been enough to secure our return, no question. So, verdict? - It's kinda hidden off in its own little area, and is kinda size-challenged relative to other Chinese restaurants around Birmingham and the surrounding areas, but it is well worth your time and a visit. Late night dinner for us again but we were absolutely amazed at how clean the little restaurant was. we ordered three delicacies and mongolian beef the meal arrived piping hot the mongolian beef was very tender and the brown sauce on the three delicacies is a favorite of my husband and he said it was the best he ever tasted. Zou's doesn't measure up to the other Chinese spot in town. They're very similar in size. The staff was friendly. The service was prompt. Prices were on par with similar restaurants. Unfortunately, the food wasn't good. The hot and sour soup was super bland. It was as though they ran out of soup and refilled the modest amount of remnants at the bottom of the container with water to stretch it instead of making more. The General Tso's was ok. They allowed me to order it mild per my wife's request which was nice. I ordered and paid for the fried rice upgrade but received white rice. My daughters egg drop soup also appeared to be watered down, not as badly as the hot and sour but noticeably so. Not a fan. My wife was a huge fan of Lucky China. They knew her voice when she called in and named her special order sushi roll after her.... that's how much she ordered from there. They sold to Mr. Lin and they're decidedly better than this place just not quite the same as Lucky China. The only reason we tried Zou's is because Mr. Lin happened to be closed yesterday.
