Got the worst food poisoning of my life after door dashing from here. I rarely give one star reviews but this place needs to either do better or get shut down. My food arrived super early which should have been a dead give away something was off. My two meat dishes were mostly veggies lacking meat but there is a 2 $ up-charge because of supply chain. I tried calling the store today and no one was picking up, could be that I wasn't the only one and therefore they're not accepting calls. So disappointed in this local place. When we moved to Chelsea, we desperately wanted to find a good Chinese spot. We tried a few and they were just missing the mark. We landed on Hunan Garden and haven't looked back since. The food has always been good and prepared in a timely manner. The staff is always polite as well. I frequent the orange chicken and Combination Lo Mein dishes. If you've never had Chinese donuts, you're truly missing out. It's the perfect way to top of your meal. I usually get some for the entire family to enjoy but find myself at 11:00pm inhaling the entire box of them by my lonely. If I had one critique, it would be the fact that if you're ordering dinner and your dish has rice, it doesn't automatically come with fried rice; it comes with white rice instead. There is an up charge to substitute fried rice. On the other hand for lunch, your meal comes with friend rice with no need to add it. I don't quite understand the logic there but I know it'll drive up the price of your meal. For me and my spouse it's easy to spend almost $50 with egg rolls, our meals and the occasional Chinese donut order. I got this for takeout and have had it before, but it had been a while. Food was ready really quickly. I ordered 2 dishes and one of the dishes was wrong. I didn't know it until after I got home. Both were good, but not great. I didn't really like the general tao that they had gotten wrong. It needed a little more flavor. My wife and I ordered take out and within 1 & 1/2 hours we were very sick with vomiting and diarrhea!!! We ordered a Sesame Chicken Meal with fried rice (no onion) and a Sweet & Sour Chicken meal with lo Mein and an egg roll on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at about 5:30 pm. We drove home , 4 miles, and began eating within 20 minutes. 45 minutes later we were in the bathrooms with diarrhea and vomiting!!! I called the restaurant about an hour later to report that we had gotten sick after eating their food. The person I spoke with would only keep repeating, "No body else is sick, we have insurance." I asked if I brought the remaining food back, which was a very large amount, if I could get a refund. The person would only repeat several times the phrase, "No body else is sick, we have insurance." "No body else is sick, we have insurance." They then just hung up on me. I have the remaining food in my deep freezer and I'll be taking it to the health department on Monday!!! First off how the world are there positive reviews about this place. Second this place is a heck no. We went in for lunch today and I'm pretty sure i have high blood pressure now. Everything was full of salt. My friend who suggested this place took one bite and said I'm so sorry. I honestly felt so sick. I called in a pick up order. They are not the nicest on the phone. I ordered crispy duck and hot and sour soup. When I got the food home the crispy duck was soooooo dark, almost black and super dry. There were bits that were just bone in the batch and pretty sure it had been 'leftovers' from an order of Pecking Duck from another customer and they just fried it up. I say that because it was so over cooked. The drums had perfect bite marks taken out of it and there was bits of just bone in the mix with no meat on them. I'm super disappointed and disgusted. I passed by this place for years and never took the time to try it out; until my colleague suggested it for a lunch meeting. Boy have I been missing out. The lunch specials are reasonably priced, staff is extremely friendly and the food is really good. I am a tough critic on Chinese and I like consistency. This place is it. The only suggestion that I would make it to come early if you're coming during the lunch hour. It usually starts to fill up around noon. It doesn't take them long to get your food out though so you can enjoy it if you take shorter lunches. I think that this is the best in the area and it may be one of the best in the city for sure. Ended up here when the restaurant we were planning to eat at was having problems. The interior is kinda tired. Nasty old carpet. They appear to do a big take out business and the entrance is crowded with a drink cooler and other items related to take out. But we sat down and ordered. TLDR: nothing special. Generous portions. I've ordered from here a few(three) times with 66.666% accuracy on orders. Twice I've ordered from here with unremarkable results, which for me is a plus. This last time I ordered(general tso's chicken, egg roll, w/ white rice) from here I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a little less and it didn't meet the minimum price for delivery. So rather than waste the food, bc I have no friends with whom to share, we(this place and I) agree that I will pay the rest of the necessary amount as a tip. The tip was the same price as my order so it was a nice tip I think. Driver arrives on time but at a side door, idk why lol, I mean it is a big facility so I can somewhat overlook showing up at a side door, even though no one has delivered there before. But this is when things head rapidly south... I'll try to keep it short and fact based but I'm still heated and it's been a few days. Obviously I have important things going on lol. When I order Chinese I eat it with chopsticks, is it odd? Maybe a little bit, but it's a small thing to throw chopsticks in the bag. First thing on the phone after confirming it's delivery, last thing before "bye" and hanging up, and at least once in the middle of ordering I mention not to forget the chopsticks!!! I once, 75% jokingly, say, "even if you forget the food, get those chopsticks in the bag please." This becomes relevant for an ironic laugh in the next paragraph. In this case I wasn't just fueling a closeted inner weeb. I was at this facility where I couldn't find silverware, like I said it is big, vast on the inside and I travel here a couple times a year for work so I don't know the layout well. Ahhh, I said sticking to facts and here I am now.. ok facts. There were no chopsticks! No exactly a Shyamalan twist. I find a plastic fork that can barely cut my sweet and sour chicken. "Sweet and sour?!?!" You say? That's em effing right! Not only was it sweet and sour dry gross flavorless chicken there was no egg roll!!!!!!!!!! "Oh chill, sweet and sour chicken isn't too bad", you say?? There was no sweet and sour sauce!!! They didn't even get the wrong order right!!! Which is redundant but you knew what I meant didn't you haha it's fun to say. Conclusion: I paid double the price for and ate cold, dry, tasteless chicken, with a floppy fork before traveling home. And as you know, sometimes those pieces are a little awkward to take a bite of before cutting off a bit. At least I didn't have to worry about getting sauce on my face while I negotiated the pieces into my mouth. And at least the weather was unseasonably warm for the winter and with the high humidity and smoggy smells wafting in from Birmingham the evening was not totally devoid of flavor. read more

The egg roll they give you when you sit down seemed to be especially tasty. I usually don't eat egg rolls, but I scarfed this one down. I had the option between a small bowl of hot and sour soup or egg drop soup, and I chose the hot and sour. Fortunately, it wasn't any different from most other hot and sour soups I've tried. It was very good. Like Charlie S., I ordered chicken and veggies in a spicy sauce. I wish I had specified a preference for steamed rice instead of fried rice, and I also wish there were more veggies and less chicken, but overall I was very happy with my meal. As a bonus, the service is excellent and the decor is nice. All that for less than $10. Awesome. I just edited my review to reflect my current opinion with their service. I am never going back to this place. Today I walked through the door at 2:25. There were 4 other tables of customers still eating. A waiter looked at me with a confused, irritated expression and asked, "You want takeout?" I said, "No, I want to sit." He snorted derisively and said, "We close in 5 minutes." I turned around to find a waitress GLARING at me -- really, if looks could kill, I'd be dead and half decomposed already -- so I just said, "Ok," and left. They had five more minutes prior to closing - they weren't closed yet. They had four tables of guests who were obviously still eating and were going to be there for a while. I was a single guest who was going to eat and get out of there quickly. Refusing to serve me in this way is just bad customer service, and I won't give my hard-earned money to a place that doesn't treat me with respect as a customer. I work at a small business myself, and if a customer comes in 5 minutes to closing, or even 1 minute to closing, I serve him or her to the utmost of my ability. Why? Just had a wonderful Sunday dinner with friends at Hunan Garden in Hoover. We started with piping hot egg rolls and followed that with Hot and Sour soup. Live in Hoover, very close to this place and drive by all the time, not thinking twice about stopping. One evening a couple weeks ago my wife and I decided to give Hunan Garden a shot after being completely overlooked at another (otherwise very good) Chinese restaurant in Hoover. Anyway, the food here was excellent and tho we had no expectations, they more than likely would have been exceeded! Chicken looked, and tasted fresh and real, not like that ultra-breaded mystery meat you may get at other Asian dining. Rice and veggies were great as well. Service was perfect and there are even a couple tv's inside. Nothing loud enough to distract from the great, traditional atmosphere, but for those who don't want to miss out on their college football... No worries! We WILL be going back! read more

I really enjoyed dining at Hunan Garden. My husband & I went to our go-to chinese restaurant and to our surprise it was packed and we weren't even recognized as we waited to be seated. Needless to say, we walked out! Hunan Garden was intriguing as we drive by often. Boy am I excited we stopped in! Great choice. The food was hot and tasty and very abundant. We shared a entree and still had enough leftovers for the next day. The prices were great! Lastly, service was pleasant. Here's a good tip: they offer a special on both Saturday and Sunday that ends at 2pm. Pretty much it's two choices of meat along with fried rice for the price of one. This gives you a better variety. Went here as a last minute effort at finding a place open after 9pm, after a crazy day of shopping with my cousin. Google told us it was closed but we called and were told 10:30. It was certainly an odd experience, I'll be honest. Food was ~4 stars, our server was quirky but good.... But the atmosphere gets 1.98 stars. We walked in and it was... WARM. Uncomfortably so. Muggy, even. Lighting was super dim and we were the only ones there except 1 or 2 tables leaving. The booth was next to the window... With peeling wallpaper on the window sill, dusty and dead bugs... With all that said, the sesame chicken was good and rice was okay. We split the entree and it was about $11. Water was refilled quickly (thank goodness, since I was chugging it to stay cool!). My husband and I have been searching for a Chinese restaurant in Hoover and this is the best we have found so far. We had a nice dinner for 3 on Monday evening. There were not many other people there. Our waiter was pretty funny. The service was good, but we were the only table he had at the time. We enjoyed the sizzling rice soup and had a good appetizer platter. The crab rangoon was much better than just about any other place that we had. Do to the shape, there was much more filling in them than we are used to, which was good. We had hunan beef, hunan shrimp and mongolian beef. All were good. The shrimp had a bit too much breading, and I would liek more vegetables. The beef dishes were pretty tasty and the beef was tender. Overall good and we will be back. read more
