This place gets bonus for being the only Chinese place open after 9:30pm on a Friday night when I was out late and craving a crab rangoon and some lo mein. The online ordering system stopped working at 10, but I called in the order at 10:30 and was able to get my food that way! Overall, the crab Rangoon was a little more savory than I usually like, and the rest of the food was fine, but nothing exceptional. It has been a journey to find inexpensive authentic Chinese Food. For some strange reason, we ordered New China Town Special Fried Rice. The first order my wife wanted WonTon soup also. The soup was tossed, and the Fried Rice was a huge hit. A week or so later, we ordered the Fried Rice again and I tried the Mongolian Beef. The beef had a few too many onions but was very good. My favorite part of this place is when you come to pick up your order, the owner goes back and forth to the kitchen on a Hover board. Only in Birmingham. My job is in walking distance of this place. Order ahead and go pick up. They have a lunch menu like most places and you get just about the same portion size for a cheaper price. Here you get more than a lunch portion and great food. I've ordered the pepper steak with lo mein about 6 times and it hasn't failed not once. Really good food. I tried my usual favorite Kung Pao Shrimp once and it was quite different from what I'm used too. Never had it with celery and carrots in it. New China Town was delicious. Since covid, the restaurant has not allowed indoor dining, even though they have a large dining area. They allow to-go orders and have a table and plexi-glass divider to keep distance between customers and employees. The food is ready very quickly, as our pick up time is usually between 15-20 minutes anytime my roommates and I have ordered food. We ordered the fried dumplings and the chicken lo mein to share. The place I chose to eat at was "New China Town" on 1020 20th St S, Birmingham, AL 35205. This is a place I usually eat at at least 3 or 4 times a month. Before I once had the chance to eat inside but since Covid I've had to do pick up only, honestly I don't think they'll ever open up the dine in option. They do still have Covid protocols with limited contact but the service is always good and they work pretty fast. The server always makes sure that your order is right. Since our normal delivery Chinese place has recently closed on Saturdays, we had to branch out on one of the online delivery services when we were craving Chinese. Not only did Chinese sound good, but we also needed white rice for a recipe later in the week. I will start by saying that they don't send the containers of white rice like other places typically do. But that is entirely on me not reading descriptions. But in no way is their fault. Since we had forgotten the other place was closed, the decision on food was already made. So when we saw that they had the same items, it was much more simple to order the same things. So we went with Mongolian beef, egg drop soup, spring rolls and sweet and sour shrimp. The best thing we got were the spring rolls... and they were just ok. The egg drop soup had no depth to it. The Mongolian beef was fine. But the portion had a TON of rice and not a lot of the beef. The sweet and sour shrimp were really bad. It is honestly amazing how much batter they were able to put on these. The most excessive breading on any dish I have ever had. They looked HUGE. But the shrimp inside were very normal or below normal size. I can honestly say I will never order from here again. If I'm in this neck of the woods, I might try to order something in person while asking some questions. But I won't roll the dice on getting delivery again. read more

Ordered ahead and due to traffic crash, I was actually 10-15 minutes late on picking up my order.. however, when I got there, I still waited 10 minutes to get my food so I am pretty sure they waited until I was at the restaurant to make my meal. It was late and I was hungry, so that was definitely a draw back. It looks like they are currently only doing takeout. It's in the downtown area, so just street/parallel parking for the most part. I ordered the sweet n sour chicken with a $2 uncharge for the lo mein; which gave me a total of about $18. I did order on the Uber app, so possible that they tack on their own up-charges. The smaller pieces of chicken were good, but the bigger ones just tasted like straight breading. I'm also pretty sure I must have had some shrimp mixed in, because when I bit into a piece, the inside looked like a shrimp body. They give extra sauce, just in case. The BEST sesame tofu in the world. I cannot find another place that makes it even a little bit close to the way they do it, and I have scoured the Internet for a recipe to do it myself-- it doesn't exist. Most Chinese places just cube tofu and pan-fry it, but New China Town batters it and fries it up just like sesame chicken. Great for vegans and vegetarians who miss "regular" Chinese takeout. And even our non-vegan family members love it, too! We live in the Huntsville area and I am so excited every time we go to Birmingham because I HAVE to get this tofu! I'm so excited to find another restaurant that serves plant-based food. This Mongolian "Beef" (Tofu) was simply divine. They make vegetable dumplings, spring rolls, and every main dish has a vegetable option. At least 15 people came and went, picking up their to-go orders while we dined in. I give this place such a high mark for amazing vegetarian options. My wife is a vegetarian and it can be hard to find options in bham. This place has veggie dumplings and the dumpling sauce is good enough to bottle. They have mock chicken and beef. I got the beef-less Mongolian beef. And it was great! But our favorite is the fried tofu. Most fried tofu is tofu pieces fried but new china batters their tofu and fries it. It's so good! And for all you non believers. I've taken a couple of my gym rat friends who eat masses amount of animal protein and when they had the fried tofu they couldn't believe it. They taught it was chicken. Vegan Review! We have eaten here twice in the last week. Loved the food both times. We ate here both times on a Friday night. You have to park on the street because there is no private parking lot. It wasn't crowded either time. The interior is dated, but it doesn't reflect the quality of the food. The service was friendly and quick. Everything on their Vegetarian Special Menu is completely VEGAN. Also, we ordered the appetizers fried dumplings and spring rolls which are vegan. The dumplings, along with the dipping sauce that comes with it are incredible! We have ordered Vegetable Fried Rice. It had a great flavor, very fresh, it does come with a whole lot of onions, so if you like onions, that's not a problem. We have also ordered the Sesame Tofu and the Sweet & Sour Tofu. I am telling you, this is the BEST Sweet & Sour Tofu I have ever eaten! You could never tell that you weren't eating actual meat. The texture of the tofu is perfect. It is the same with the Sesame Tofu. The tofu is cooked very similarly in both. The Sesame Tofu just isn't as "sweet" as the Sweet & Sour, but it is definitely just as delicious. They suggested that since we liked those 2 dishes, to try General Tso's Tofu next time. We will definitely be back soon! read more

It has been a minute since I last came here, but, when I was in Birmingham, I went multiple times per week. The service was always excellent, truly above and beyond. My visits are much more sporadic these days (because I don't live in Birmingham any more) and the staff still remembers me. The egg drop soup is some of the best I've ever had. The egg rolls are amazing and the broccoli dishes are exactly what they should be. This is American Chinese comfort food at its absolute finest. The brocolii was cunchy (not overcooked) and the beef was tender. The Honey Chicken Wings were a bit mushy from being quite smothered in sauce. But not having ordered it before, I don't know if that is how it is served...still, it was delicious. Did I mention the portion was very generous? I culdn't finish it all. I've been here a couple of times and every time it far exceeds my expectations. The salt and pepper shrimp is not like the type I've gotten from other places. It's more chili-based than salt or pepper. While I was a little surprised when I first saw it the taste was wonderful and there were so many shrimp. The steamed dumplings are also great.
