Always been a great take-out/family restaurant! Still going strong! Been going there for almost 30 yrs! The next generation has been keeping it well! Big portions family style take out and dining in! The eggrolls are great too! Never had something that disappointed! Fast callin take out service! They can have a line out the door at times, but it is worth it! read more

New China - Chicken Fried Rice - Chinese Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

This place has always been my favorite...Affordable huge portions, comforting old school tastes. But my pick up order was a waste of money this go around. My moo goo gai pan had barely any chicken in it. There were huge chunks of vegetables and it was way too starchy. It was like they were trying to compensate for the lack of protein in it. I haven't ordered from them this year, but I did tonight. Listen the economy is rough for everyone but I paid $15 for this chicken and they used maybe 1/8 of a chicken breast in it. Not cool. Hate to leave the negative review, but I need to warn people that they're using filler food to complete the orders and charging more. What's not cool anywhere these days is paying more and getting way less than just a few years ago. All of us are working hard to earn money and it just feels so disappointing to not get what you pay for, especially when you're paying more than you used to. I don't know who to blame for this. If I wanted a carton of vegetables I would have eaten a frozen bag for $2.50 tonight. read more

Everyone has their hometown Chinese place that they'd die for. Well, maybe not everyone, but I know I do, and this is it. The food is delicious. Mongolian beef is my go-to and it has never disappointed. Usually when I come in after calling in an order, the lady at the counter knows what I ordered before I tell her. I have no idea how. On busy nights, you might wait 20 minutes. Sit back and watch the incredibly skilled kitchen staff swiftly prepare ginormous batches of food from their no-frills menu. It's worth what little wait you may be faced with. I love this place and will support them for as long as I can. read more

This is one of if not the best Chinese restaurant in Birmingham Alabama! The food is always fresh and wonderfully delicious! The staff is very friendly and efficient. read more

See all

We love New China and have been eating there for years. They are incredibly fast and I don't think we've ever had a bad experience. Every time we call our order in they say "10 Minutes!" And it is always that fast. I'm always amazed how they know what I am there to pick up as soon as I walk in and they don't even have to ask. It's a small restaurant but great service and kind employees. We love the space and have always had a great experience. read more

I wasn't here with high expectations given all the positive reviews but was disappointed. This tasted like Chinese food you get from inside a Kroger grocery store. Overcooked, salty and just covered in brown sauce. read more

Continues to be my favorite Chinese restaurant. I've been coming here for years. Their portions are generous, pricing is affordable, and the flavor of everything is phenomenal. Everyone I introduce to this place agrees it's the best they've ever had! read more

Food is always so good. The sesame chicken and hot and sour soup are a must! They are quick and efficient and consistent!

Lol, the very first review says "authentic" Chinese food....errr.....no. It's really not lol. You want authentic, try Mr.Chen's, some of their menu items are indeed authentic. Anyway, the food here is pretty standard for "Chinese" restaurants like these. Good sized portion with okay food. Good value for your money, but don't expect too much. I personally think the dishes with water chestnut can do without quite so much of it....and I like water chestnut! Not a fan of their egg rolls at all. I do like their soups that come with the lunch specials though. No specific recommendations....honestly all the dishes seem pretty similar when you get them! read more

The best Chinese takeout around! Consistently good food, accurate, and fast! The house lo mein is on point.

Quick, cheap, and delicious. The Mongolian beef and moo shu pork are my go-tos. Highly recommend

Birmingham has a LOT to offer in terms of small Chinese restaurants but there is none better than NEW CHINA! The restaurant is truly a hole in the wall but it is so nice to know I will be getting exactly what I ordered it, how I ordered it, every time. If you have a lunch break, take the time to check out their specials. They serve GINORMOUS portions of meat, fried rice, a whole cup of soup and an egg roll for less than $10!!! I can't believe it even typing it. I love their sesame chicken and the egg drop soup is incredible! Grab you a to-go meal soon and see for yourself. New China is it!! read more

Very greasy salty food. True "American Chinese food". Prices were good and portions large. Service was ok too.

If you live in the area, congratulations!!! You just found your go-to Chinese takeout spot! Or at least I did when I stopped by for some lunch takeout this week. I called to order the sesame chicken lunch special and was told that it would be ready in 10 minutes. When I got there to pick it up, it was ready in exactly 10 minutes! So, my first impression was that ordering food here is easy and pretty efficient. There weren't any customers there when I came in to pick up my food although they seemed to be working on a handful of other orders. I'm assuming that more people use this as a takeout place than a sit down restaurant. In terms of food, the lunch special comes with the entree, fried rice, egg roll, and soup. Such a good deal! They gave so much chicken that I had leftovers! And the egg roll...it wasn't just thick. It was THICC. They didn't ask me for my choice of soup, so I'm assuming that they give this soup to all the lunch specials. It seemed like a mix of egg drop and hot and sour soup, which wasn't too bad but not my favorite. Overall, if you're in the mood for some Chinese takeout that's in the area, then New China will definitely hit the spot! read more

New China - Sesame chicken lunch special - Chinese Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

My new go-to Chinese takeout spot! Since moving into the area recently, I have been on a tour of nearby Chinese restaurants and New China stands above the rest. Their Chicken Lo Mein is the to die for, and they do not skimp on portion sizes so come with an appetite! The staff is very friendly, and they get your food to you quick. read more

We love going here when we get a craving. Love their fried rice and sesame chicken. We have been visiting for years.

Excellent authentic tasting Chinese! Always busy and are fast in preparation. No ambiance but the food is always great!

If this place is close to you, might be worth it. We had heard great things, so we went out of our way to grab some takeout. Overall, not my favorite Chinese food in the area. Lo mein was my favorite dish. Probably won't be back because so far out of our way. Not with the extra effort. read more

I'm usually skeptical of Chinese and takeout, but New China is the game-changer. It is a bit of a hidden gem located in the heart of Bluff Park just off Tyler Rd. There's nothing special about the building, but the staff, speedy fast service, and delicious tasting food all make this a five-star small Chinese restaurant. My wife and I heard about this place from a friend and after reading great reviews we had to try it out. Our meal was enough to feed 4 people, and it was only $20.98. We ordered the Mongolian Beef, vegetable fried rice, two eggs rolls, and hot and sour soup. Everything was delicious and fresh; my favorites were definitely the Mongolian Beef and the Hot and Sour soup but the other items were still great. Our order was ready in less than 10 minutes after calling. They may not say much when you call in to order, but man they know what they are doing here. It's a bit comical when they don't even take your name down, but they know exactly who you are and what you ordered when you walk in. This will definitely be a new go-to takeout place for us! read more

I have never been a huge Chinese takeout fan. But the reviews and cult following do not lie- this place is amazing! My husband and I ordered enough food for 5 meals and it was $20.98. And, it was All delicious. We ordered the Mongolian beef, vegetable fried rice, two egg rolls, and the hot and sour soup. The beef was SO delicious I had dreams about it. We called in our order and it took less than 10 minutes for them to prepare and have ready for us. This is a hidden gem! I'm so glad that I only live five minutes away. read more

Best Chinese take out in Birmingham! Been getting food from here for years. Great portions, taste and service

We've given this place a few more tries after having a couple of bad experiences (soft shrimp and tough meat). And so far they've improved and are back to their A-game. Their egg foo young is my favorite among other dishes. They give a ton of food and it's been back to great again! Thank you New China for taking note and responding to the concerns. read more

I was encouraged as I entered the store to see the dining area was over 50% full. Visiting from Chicago and hoping to get a decent lunch special. Going into a Chinese restaurant for the first time is like what Forest Gump says about a box of chocolates, "You never know what you are going to get". What I got was a dish that told me, in addition to the apparent patronage in the dining area, that this place is worth going back to again. read more

Decent Chinese Take-Out (or eat in). It meets all the "must haves" for a decent chinese place: cooked on the spot, large portions, those white chinese take out boxes with the metal handles and very little english spoken by any employee. We are eating for at least two days on a $23 meal. Its worth it if you are in the area. read more

New China - Chinese Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

If you want chinese-american comfort food that is good, made fast and doesn't cost much, this is a good place to go

I'm almost eight and think this place is great! I came up with that rhyme ;) Our fridge was broken so we ordered food from here. I was so glad our fridge broke because the food was really good and isn't stuff my mom makes. I ordered the chicken fried rice and had to share with my little sister. That was okay because they gave me a ton of food. It came in a really big box, not one of those little containers. I ate all the chicken first. Then I ate all the stuff my sister didn't finish. Then I had a giant egg roll. And my dad gave me some of his hot-and-sour soup. It wasn't too hot -- promise. I think other kids would like all this stuff, too. It was probably the most I've ever eaten. I hope we don't have to wait for the fridge to break again to eat there. Yum, yum, yum ... read more

Three entrees and egg rolls. Perfection. Orange Beef was requested to be spicy. Perfectly spicy without being mild or rediculous. Large portions and reasonable price! read more

This place used to be a family favorite, but it has been more and more disappointing over the past couple of years. It's kind of depressing. My mom can't have anything spicy hot, and this is the second time in a row they have given us hot and sour soup instead of egg drop. The entrees were completely bland. Unlike my mom, I love hot stuff, and the Kung Pao chicken was the least hot I've ever had... as in zero heat. It's a shame, but we probably aren't going to order from here ever again. Also the customer service is quite simply horrific, but that's nothing new. read more

You get what you ask for. For a grand sum of $16, we gorged ourselves on lo mein and Mongolian beef as we watched what has proven to be an earth-shaking world cup. The meal left us sedated and content, like a boa constrictor digesting a goat. Comfortable? No. Delicious? Yes. Do it again? Already calling in another order. Sad to see El Tri out of the tournament, but at least I've got these tasty egg rolls to ease the pain. read more

New China - decadent lo mein - Chinese Near Me - Birmingham, Alabama

We normally LOVE New China but had a bad experience last night. My Sesame Chicken was super dry and our Egg Rolls tasted like cigarette smoke. Super disappointed and won't return again anytime soon. read more

I know good Chinese food, and this is great stuff! Don't believe the grouches who leave bad reviews. The Kung Pao Beef, General Chicken and Pork fried rice were all excellent-- and for a very reasonable price. I will be back. read more

Let me get this out of the way first: the lady who (wo)mans the front counter is Birmingham's own Egg Drop Soup Nazi (EDSN) in the flesh. If you call in to order, she barks a single word at you: "CHINA!" After this, there's total silence. The best is yet to come, though: after you finish ordering, she doesn't ask your name, she doesn't tell you how much it'll cost, she doesn't tell you how long it'll take. She just hangs up on you AND REMEMBERS YOU BY THE SOUND OF YOUR VOICE when you come in still reeling from the shock of the encounter. SHE. IS. AWESOME. She really does have some kind of eidetic memory -- or must have -- because I have personally witnessed her taking orders, wrapping other to-go orders, and cooking SIMULTANEOUSLY. Oh, and she's incredibly friendly in-person. And as for her food? It's some of the best Chinese in the area. It's not the best Chinese I've ever had -- not even close -- but it's very good for what it is. My wife is absolutely addicted to their fried rice (any variety) and their dumplings. I'm a huge fan of the Kung Pao Chicken. DId I mention that I'm an even huger fan of EDSN? In summary, this is the first Chinese takeout place I've ever ordered from where the staff are a (much) larger attraction than the food. And that's saying something, because the food's pretty good. ALL HAIL EDSN! read more

Having grown up in Bluff Park, New China is absolutely the only place to get Chinese food. My family never ate out at restaurants when I was a kid, but we sure got New China when we got take out. I didn't know that people actually ate AT New China (or in restaurants for that matter) until I was a teenager, but that's beside the point. The woman who works the front register has been there since the shopping center was built and is a total firecracker. Every time my dad places a to-go order on the phone, he doesn't even have to say who he is - "THANK YOU MARK, 10 MINUTES". She always knows that large orders of sweet and sour chicken, house lo-mein, and mongolian beef is my dad. The funny thing also is that no matter who picks up the order (whether it's me, my mom, my dad, or any of my sisters) when we walk in, the lady at the front will yell "OH HELLO MARK!". I think it's awesome that after so long (10+ years), she still remembers us. The sweet and sour chicken is always super crispy on the outside and doesn't come coated in the typical orange sauce - it's always on the side so you can pick how much you want on your portion. The house lo-mein has chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp mixed in with the best lo-mein I've ever tasted. Maybe it's more nostalgic for me, but I think it's the right mix of greasy and flavorful. The mongolian beef is a little too tough and not as tasty as it has been in the past, but it's edible. I've eaten at what feels like hundreds of Chinese places all over the country, but New China will always been my "home" Chinese place. read more

We get take-out from New China at least twice a month and have for years. The food is consistently good with lots of choices. My son is devoted to their fried rice (either beef or shrimp), while my husband and I each get an egg roll or spring roll and split an entree. My favorites include orange beef, Mongolian beef and moo shu pork - although we run out of pancakes if we share the latter. Love the crab rangoon too if I'm splurging. Always hot, always flavorful, always ready in minutes, always acknowledged with the same monotone, somewhat strident voice of the owner who is the endearing heart and soul of the operation. Another reviewer claimed New China has a cult following, and it's true. When the restaurant was shut for a few weeks earlier this year when the family visited China, my husband joked that he expected tents to start sprouting on the sidewalk outside as loyal patrons awaited their return. A coworker mentioning "New China" brings flocks of people to her desk to swap stories of the proprietor as well as rave over the food. It's must-try. read more

The people who own this business and who work here are very friendly and are hard workers. Our food was served really hot and properly seasoned. Many times I find restaurant food too salty, but this was not. I had Kung Pao chicken and my wife had sweet and sour chicken. Both were very good and very hot from the wok cooking. The rice had been around for a while and was not good. They serve soup and an egg roll with each order. The soup was good. The egg roll tasted a little eggy. Now I know it is an egg roll, but I consider it a fault when it tastes that way. Usually it means it is not fresh or the oil used in frying was too old. It was very hot, though. Lunch specials are a very good value, and, this is a counter service place which I always like because it is always much less expensive for the same food. We certainly will be going back. read more

Bluff Park is definitely lucky to have New China around. It is THE go-to for every parent that has ever burned dinner and needed a quick, delicious option. I've never eaten in here. It's just so small inside, I've never really considered it a dine-in restaurant. That's ok. It totally serves it's purpose as a quick take out place with huge portions. read more

Went here hoping to get some good Hot/Sour soup. Didn't find it. It was easy place to find, service was great and smiles behind the counters. Second place in BHM that was well reviewed on Yelp, so I was excited to go. The food was bland. I actually tried to doctor it up when I got home, never had to do that before. It was just warm food, with no taste to it. Maybe it was just my timing as alot of people seem to enjoy it. I might just need to ask someone working there, where they would go and eat Chinese food as I don't see it in the patrons eating here. Still searching. read more
