Truly Authentic Chinese cuisine...they have Real Chefs from Sichuan China and have some absolutely Chinese recipes that are more savory than sweet like those ridicules buffet feeding trough eateries. I am very grateful this place exists. The menu is gigantic, front-loaded with your General Tso's, Kung Pao, and other San Francisco crap. But flip to the back, to where the pictures are, and that's where you'll find the real menu. Dan dan noodles, soup dumplings, fish with pickled cabbage, pig's blood and tripe, the works. This is very much a *Western* Chinese restaurant. Not Western as in American, but Western as in the interior, rural, spicy part of China where people eat bags of red peppercorns and drink sorghum wine akin to lighter fluid. Having worked for Chinese employers, I can say these dishes are as authentic as they are wonderful. Xi'an pork belly and cumin lamb burgers? Delicious. Cucumbers topped with Sichuan chili oil and peanuts? Delicious. Lion's head meatballs? Eh, not my cup of tea - kind of a mushy ball with five spice, but it's fine. Shift back East and get a whole Peking duck wrapped in a thin pancake and topped with cucumber, green onion, and hoisin - AS IT SHOULD BE, DAMN IT. Normally this would be a 5 star. The staff can be a bit intrusive with their commentary on every single dish and order (I prefer a more late Qing, imperial atmosphere) so that knocks a point off. But still, it's a fantastic place, and it is our duty to give it our support. If Alabama allows itself to lose this gem, then the tortures of Confucian Hell will be well deserved. read more

I recently discovered Great Wall Chinese Restaurant, and it has been one of my favorite places to go for a quick and delicious dinner. The decorations and general ambiance of the restaurant are very pleasant, and the music playing does not hinder any conversations, which I sometimes find to be an issue at many restaurants I try. Sometimes it can be a bit cold inside, so I always bring a sweater, which may be something to consider if you get cold easily in restaurants. The staff at Great Wall are extremely kind and welcoming, and I never have issues being seated or ordering food. In addition to this, our waiter gave us some good recommendations, especially as it was my friend's first time coming here. The portion sizes are huge, so I definitely recommend splitting items or trying a little bit of everything. Between my 3 friends and me, we ordered three entrees, as well as an appetizer. Out of everything we tried, I really enjoyed the spicy cucumber appetizer and the tofu and mushroom clay pot the most. The spicy cucumber was very crunchy, with the right amount of heat that added layers to the dish rather than overwhelming the cucumber and its other flavors. The mushroom and tofu in a clay pot are cooked in a delicious sauce, and the clay pot really helps to enhance the overall flavor. I highly recommend it, especially if you haven't tried tofu before; it's a great introduction to tofu for those who may be wary of the taste. We had plenty of leftovers and ended up dividing the different entrees among all of us, which was more than enough food. I feel like most Chinese restaurants are great at one thing and that's your go to. Great Wall is good at many things. We tried a little bit of everything at Great Wall so we could give it a fair chance. Everything was pretty good. The only thing we weren't too fond of was the wings. We are used to getting a fried wing so it just wasn't what we had a taste for. I personally really enjoyed the Mongolian beef. They lack professionalism, common courtesy, and today a level of blatant racial preference that was reminiscent of the 50s. From a perspective of the staff, they were very professional and respectful. The actual restaurant itself was very well decorated; you can tell that the owner put a lot of work into creating a very pleasant atmosphere. The seating was a bit tight, one of the members of our party had to squeeze in because we were so close to another table. When it came to ordering our first waiter was a little impatient but there were 10 of us so I can't really blame him. The man that came afterwards was very straightforward, and was trying his best even if he misunderstood us at times. The drinks were your average fair, nothing of any special note, but nothing to be dismissive over. I and the other people in the party felt like the food was pretty average for the glowing ratings we'd read on here and on other review services. I ordered the pork fried noodles which was pretty good but wasn't something I'd necessarily order again. The Chinese donuts were AMAZING and I would get them again for sure. So, let me tell you I just experienced one of the best Chinese restaurants I ever had in a long time. Everything blew my mind from the service to the environment and especially the flavor. Our food came out extremely quick and had a beautiful presentation. Thankfully, the view was matched by the mind blowing taste. First we ordered the garlic marinated mini cucumbers. Next came the steam mini soup buns. Also, we ordered the wonton and spicy peanut sauce. Then the crab rangoons. Pork ears. Finally, the spring rolls. As amazing as the appetizers were, the main priority for my friends and I was the hot pot and we were not disappointed. The hot pot comes in a mild or spicy stock which is then served with a variety of meats and vegetables that you can pick and choose for the whole table to enjoy. This was my first time with a hot pot and I highly recommend it to everyone, especially with a group of friends and/or family. Because it makes the experience much better. Regardless, you will still have an extremely flavorful meal. Also, I have to mention that I ordered the crispy duck. This duck made me realize the lack of duck in my life. I can't stress this enough. I may replace chicken with duck especially if it is this crispy duck. I am now duck man.
