I tried Ming's based on other reviews and it was just ok compared to other Chinese restaurants. I got takeout and tried the combo of steak, chicken, and shrimp. The breading on the shrimp was not crispy and overall the dish did not have much flavor including the fried rice. The lunch option comes with choice of soup and egg roll. I got the hit and sour soup which was as good as others I've had. It the egg roll was average. Overall, there are better Chinese restaurants in the area. read more

Ming's is the only quality consistent Chinese restaurant over the mountain. I have tried the others. Ming's has great flavor, is fresh, The egg rolls have meat in them, they'll customize your order, the crab rangoons are made in house and not just frozen. This was a surpriser to have a meal at. It is almost secret from the outside that is never just accidentally noticed by anyone. You'd have to know exactly where it is bc you won't just happen to drive past it some time. The food and the service was very delicious. My server was super kind and she was very helpful too as I was curious of what to order. She actually talked with me and then I ordered a mindblower that was seriously perfect. The feel inside is nicer than you'll expect as you see it form the outside and even as soon as you walk inside the front door. I stopped in for lunch. It took me over 20 mins to get my food. My egg rolls were dry and overcooked. My egg drop soup was delicious. I also had the general chicken which was over cooked and had very little taste or heat level. I will given them try again. read more

Okay the first selling point for me personally was the location - my odometer went up by only one mile round trip! Secondly, this place has been in business since 1988?! You know it has to be good to be around for so long. I ordered the spicy Szechuan wings for an appetizer, the Kung Pao combination, and the honey walnut coated chicken (with brown rice). The restaurant itself is charming and has strong family touches (pictures of children up on the wall around the register), seems very clean and comfortable. I ordered just as they opened and there were already a few people seated in the dining room. Employees were wearing masks and very respectful. Everything came out piping hot and perfectly packaged for my short trek home! First off - the wings. I wish they were a bit more spicy (I love heat!), but now I know next time to order them extra spicy. Flavor was great, perfectly seasoned (not too salty) and with a yummy dipping sauce! They were still almost too hot (temperature, not spice) by the time we sat down to eat. Next up, the entrees. Portion was great! This is easily two meals for me, maybe I'll make a little extra rice, but tons of meat and vegetables with a lot of sauce. I had the honey coated walnut chicken which was great! Veggies had a nice bit of crunch, sauce was not overly sweet, and chicken was moist. My boyfriend had the Kung Pao combination which he enjoyed! His veggies were also well cooked, the sauce was savory and plentiful, and the meats were all great as well. He loves spicy things like I do (maybe even more so), so next time he'll probably ask for it to be extra spicy. All in all this was a very satisfying meal, and it was tough for us to decide what to try from the menu. We'll certainly be ordering again to try some other new dishes and any other time we have a hankering for some great, fresh Chinese from a lovely family owned establishment! read more

Long time family-run Birmingham staple, reliable for tasty fresh American style Chinese food. We have been customers for 20+ years, recently stopped there for lunch, and all overall it was a tasty meal. We both noticed much less protein ( seafood, chicken) in our entrees than in times past, plus the bill had increased noticeably, since our last visit. All things considered with supply chain issues, increased cost of supplies, wages, etc. I suppose it might be expected, but we were a little unhappily surprised with the amount of increase. Ming's is a spot I used to come to time to time for lunch when I worked nearby. But I haven't been since then which was at least 5 years ago. And it is an interesting story of how we ended up back here. I have heard for years about their peking duck being amazing. I always wanted to order it for a special occasion but never had. And with my birthday coming up, the consideration came up again. Long story short, we didn't call and try to order in enough time (at least 24-48 hours in advance) and decided to come in person. They had a crispy duck on the menu. And even though I know it wasn't the same, I figured I would give it a try. My wife wanted to try it to, so we went half and half with that and sesame chicken and some spring rolls. They didn't have a kids menu, so we got them some fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. What I had of the duck was really good and the sauce with it was tasty. Unfortunately a vast majority of this was bones that you had to pick through. Everything else was really tasty and enjoyed by everyone. The service was really attentive (it was also a slow Monday night) and that is how I always remember for lunch. Even though I would not order the duck again, I enjoyed visiting Ming's again. Also FYI, they said they don't do the peking duck any more anyway. Hate I missed that. read more

Hidden jewel Yes it is behind a car wash, yes the parking lot is dark...neither of which detail your food/dining experience. This is hands down one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area. I've been going here for over 20 years and have loved it. The staff is always warm and friendly! The hot/sour soup is amazing, and I'm convinced contains the cure for almost any illness-you eat it and feel so much better afterwards, and it tastes amazing. I love the beef with broccoli (made spicy and add baby corn), the dumplings are so worth the wait. They are not made until you order them, so because of this take about 10ish minutes to get but are so worth it. The atmosphere is a little retro, but quiet and nice. read more

I'm really sad it's taken me 13 years of living in Birmingham to finally try Ming's. The food was AMAZING! Some of the best Chinese I've ever had! Mongolian beef was a little sweet, but perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. Sesame chicken was crisp and light and perfectly fried, and the beef chow fun noodles were delicious (my daughter's favorite of everything we ordered). Friends, if you own an Asian/chinese restaurant, here is a clue. The trick to Won Ton soup is one of two things, either: A. Make the noodles thick so they can survive in the soup all day or B. Put the noodles (par cooked) into the soup at the time of purchase. Possibly the worst won-ton soup I ever had in my life. The noodles did not have the strength to lift them onto the spoon without falling into pieces. Had the Mu Shu Pork, to me Mu Shu Pork should be cooked until the ingredients are brown and carmelized, this stuff was barely cooked. Had a bit of flavor but nothing to speak of. I think Ming's is amazing for when one wants to binge on delicious Americanized Chinese food. The general tso chicken is so plump and juicy and is covered in an enticing sweet and sour sauce. Although claimed to be slightly spicy it really is very mild. The portion size is massive (chicken fills up large to go box) and easily enough covers two meals, for only $10.99. I order takeout usually and the person answering the phone is very courteous and speaks good English. The food is always ready on time. read more

How does a restaurant that's been open for 29 years only have 25 (now 26) reviews on Yelp?!? I'm not sure. Could it be because it's hidden in the corner of an office park behind Mister Carwash? Perhaps, but I like to think of Ming's as a hidden jewel. We arrived for lunch on a Wednesday and the place was packed. My guess is that many were there for a quick delicious meal from Grandview Medical Center just down the street. The outside of Ming's is unassuming and easily missed. Their interior is appropriately themed with Asian calligraphy, large booths, tables and an interesting ceiling with what appeared to be colored egg crates. I wasn't a big fan of their plastic covered chairs and they do keep the lighting quite low inside. They have a large banquet/party room separated for privacy on the far end of the restaurant. Right away I could tell from their lunch menu that they served dishes that were not your typical Chinese restaurant. I did not get to see their dinner menu, but I believe they would similarly have dinner options that provided more variety. Rachel ordered the Hot Szechuan Chicken. It was a combination of chicken, generous portions of green bell pepper and mushrooms in a dark sauce. I particularly liked the thin slices of ginger stir fried with this chicken. Matthew ordered the Mongolion Trio consisting of shrimp, scallop and chicken lightly stir fried together with white onions and served on a bed of those white fried rice noodles. I thought his dish was the tastiest. It wasn't in a heavy sauce and was DWD! I tried the Hunan Double Delicious. Yes the name of the dish swayed me. It was shrimp, chicken, celery and pea pods stir fried in a dark plum sauce. The shrimp were large and nicely cooked. It tasted very good. It was good but it wasn't double delicious :) My complimentary egg roll was adequate. Loaded with cabbage and bits of pork, our egg rolls arrived hot and fresh out of the fryer. I liked how they put a generous portion of tofu in our hot and sour soup and also green onions. I'm a sucker for green onions and having them in my soup was a very nice touch. Interestingly, on their lunch menu, Ming's states that you get an egg roll and a choice of iced tea OR hot and sour soup. Never seen that before. You also don't get a fortune cookie at the end of your meal, but when you pay at the register, there is a small bowl of them for sale for 15 cents! Quirks aside, I believe Ming's is a hidden secret where you can go for above average Asian cuisine at a reasonable price. I will return to take a look at their dinner menu. read more

I didn't want anything fried and wanting something a little more authentic than the typical takeout Chinese food. The variety of options offered on the menu suggested that so I called in a $10.99 order of garlic shrimp with vegetables and mushrooms stir-fried in garlic, brown sauce. It was really good for what I was expecting. The restaurant has a nice little entrance with a bar to your left side. The lady working at the front is nice and double-checks your order to make sure nothing was confused and your customized order was customized. They give plenty of rice to eat with it too but you won't be able to finish that. read more

I'm not a big Chinese food fan, but my wife works near here so surprise surprise I'm eating Chinese food. Pros: Very clean with slightly upscale feel. Very ornate. Cons: Small portions. Ordered Mongolian beef and got maybe 7 small pieces of meat with a ice cream scoop of solidified rice. Food tastes like it may be made in huge vats and then scooped out as needed. Not bad, but you can tell the difference.No buffet. This is cute little Chinese eatery in a strip mall. Not a date thing, but decent enough. read more

I wavered between giving this a 2 or a 3-star, for reasons that'll become clear below, but eventually settled for a more conservative rating, as the overall experience was fairly decent. I went here yesterday night for the first time for a going-away dinner for one of my friends, who lived near and liked this place. The decor was rather nostalgic - there are few places in Birmingham that have as much (East) Asian decor as this place, and it reminded me of places back in CA. There were also little santa hats on the mural of horses hanging on the wall that gave it a flair of cute, festive cheer for the holidays. Our table ordered individually, though we did share a bit of each of our dishes, so I was able to try a few bites of some of the others. In general, food-wise, I'd say it's not the most authentic of cuisines, so don't expect that, but it's still better than a fair amount of the "Chinese" restaurants in this area. There wasn't a lot of variety in either the menu itself or the sauces used (at least in the dishes we ordered last night) - most of them sported the same soy sauce based brown sauce - but they were good enough to be filling and somewhat satisfying, without too much salt or oil. My order was the Kung Pao Combination, which was pretty standard - the meats were tender, not too salty or dry, and the sauce was well-infused homogeneously throughout the dish, if not particularly distinctive. I will give a special mention to the Crab Rangoon though - my friend ordered this, and even though it's definitely not an authentic Chinese dish, and I normally am not a fan of cream cheese in warm dishes, their Crab Rangoon was actually quite good - it had just the right amount of cheese that blended smoothly with the crab meat, and the whole thing went well with the sauce. Sure, the outside may not have been as crunchy as it could be, but I liked it. The service there was fairly decent. What did make me lean towards giving the place a 2 though was the fact that their water was quite unpalatable. There's a distinct taste to dirty water, or at least there was something in the water that left a bad taste in my mouth, so that did lower the whole experience somewhat. The same taste subtly infused the rice as well, and made me wonder whether the dishes would have that same taste if it weren't for the fact that the soy sauce taste overpowered it. Perhaps it would help to get their water filter/system checked out... Overall, an ok place to get Chinese food in that particular area of Birmingham (down 280), though I would probably go elsewhere for a more authentic taste/variety. read more
