The China Doll 2 is a great little neighborhood, strip-mall Chinese restaurant near the corner of Valleydale Road and Caldwell Mill. Tucked away in the corner by the Brass Bear Antiques, China Doll 2 has a full Chinese menu, but what really drew my eye was the Twice Cooked Pork. I started off with the hot and sour soup. A decent size bowl of soup was served with a pile of deep-fried wonton strips. The soup was good but maybe not the best I've had. There are very few restaurants in Birmingham that carry twice cooked pork, so I was pretty excited when I saw it. It DID NOT disappoint! In a spicy and savory brown sauce, the pork and cabbage were perfection. I'll be back just to order this dish! read more

This is absolutely the filthiest restaurant I've ever been in. My friend's beef dish was loaded with jalapeño peppers so hot I thought I was going to have to call an ambulance for her. The food was tasteless. The only employee I saw was a woman in a teeshirt and sweatpants. The carpet on the floor was stained and filthy - who puts carpet in a restaurant? I don't know how this place stays in business. It had been a few years since I had been there with these same observations and I thought I'd give them another chance - bad idea. I love the fact they have a buffet & you can also call in for take-out. Delicious every single time I've eaten their food & they are so friendly & make sure you're happy. I highly recommend them! Frankly I'm not sure how this place keeps its doors open aside from no competition nearby. Ordered carry out, Kung Pao beef and Mongolian beef. I've honestly never seen ORANGE Kung Pao beef. So either these guys are the best Chinese cooks on the planet or the entirety of the Chinese restaurant universe has it all wrong. I'm gonna go with your Kung Pao beef should not be orange. Aside from the color the taste was, well, tasteless. I'm pretty sure if gas stations sold Chinese, this is what it would look like. The Mongolian beef was actually not bad. On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best it scores a solid 1.5 Crab Rangoons. My assumption was they should have some cream cheese and a modest amount of crab. They had neither. Egg rolls are meatless, essentially cabbage rolls. Aside from that it was great. Would highly recommend during apocalypse. read more

I was in the area and stopped for the lunch buffet. First time dining at CD. The food was mediocre, at best. The soups were just plain bad. Buffet did not have the greatest selection, but some things were acceptably tasty. The price was fair ($7) for the quality. Ditto on many of the other comments here (fried wontons on table, etc...). I go here very often and always order to go. The lady at the front always has a terrible attitude, especially when I ask her for sauce to go with my order. Every time she gives me a box and says bye. We came here for Sunday lunch and we were pleased. We frequent A LOT of Chinese places so we consider ourselves decently knowledgeable of the cuisine. Their selection wasn't as large as some places but what they did have was cooked well with lots of flavor. They also kept the buffet full to ensure that you could enjoy all that they had to offer. The service was kind and the price was more than reasonable. Our booth however did need recovering. Me and my wife sat on tears that were patched with packaging tape. Overall though I was pleased, every large restaurant started small somewhere and even though they were lacking in some places, they focused on and excelled in the important places (meaning the food and service). Food was ok. Not a large lunch buffet selection but it was acceptable for the price. I did not like that the sweet and sour sauce was on the table so it wasn't hot. I also didn't like that the crispy wonton chips for the soup were just sitting in bowls on all the tables. Our family has been coming here for several years. The food is consistent and we like it. We like the Mo Shu Pork a lot. Service is typically good except for lunch where they are almost always understaffed for the lunch buffet. They do a good take out business as well. However we have had an issue with the owner/ cashier on two different occasions. My son and his friends ate there for lunch one day, left two dollars each ( $8) as a tip. It is a buffet and they were unable to get their drinks refilled and no plates were removed so they felt that this was a reasonable tip for no service. When they checked out, the owner counted out the change to my son and took two dollars out of the change and said "this is your tip ". The total price with drink and tax was $9.50 so the original tip left on the table was 20% - more than reasonable. His dad and I gave her the benefit of the doubt as my son was 18. Perhaps she had had trouble with young people not tipping. But she forced a40% tip. So I went today and when I went to pay, I left $3 on the table (over 20%) for a self serve buffet. There was one server in the place working her tail off so I figured she had done her best. When I got to the register, my change was to be $10.50. She asks " Do you need ones?" I told her " No thank you". She repeated the question and I again declined. Then she said really hateful "SO you aren't leaving a tip?" I'm not sure what is going on here but this is very rude. I didn't bother to tell her that I left more than enough because I was ready to blow knowing now how my son felt. Since it happened twice in our family, we are done with the place. If you want to eat here, tip HUGE and make sure the owner GETS IT. read more

OK for dinner, even though it is a little pricey for the food and service is minimal. I have had dinner there at least 5 times in the past year. But, their lunch buffet is absolutely the worst! Not just one visit, but living nearby, I have stopped in about 6 times in the past year and every time, the hot food is scarce to none, and what is available looks tired and old and dry... Each visit has been well within the normal weekday lunch time (11:30 to 1:00pm) and yet the hot food quality remains the same (poor) across the board. I have had many conversations with the older lady that is always there and her command of the english language has always been above moderate. When I offered my complaints about this visit, all of a sudden, she could no longer participate in the conversation. She openly indicated that she did not understand me saying "I'm not english..."
