Twice cooked pork! One of the few places in Birmingham where you can get this savory, spicy dish!

The China Doll 2 is a great little neighborhood, strip-mall Chinese restaurant near the corner of Valleydale Road and Caldwell Mill. Tucked away in the corner by the Brass Bear Antiques, China Doll 2 has a full Chinese menu, but what really drew my eye was the Twice Cooked Pork. I started off with the hot and sour soup. A decent size bowl of soup was served with a pile of deep-fried wonton strips. The soup was good but maybe not the best I've had. There are very few restaurants in Birmingham that carry twice cooked pork, so I was pretty excited when I saw it. It DID NOT disappoint! In a spicy and savory brown sauce, the pork and cabbage were perfection. I'll be back just to order this dish!

China Doll 2 is the best Chinese food in town. I can't express that enough. It's one of our go to's and always will be! The customer service is the best! They prioritize getting to know the families in the neighborhood, and will always greet you with a smile! Please take the time to stop in and support your local eateries! You won't regret it!

The restaurant itself is also fairly large with a lot of seating a few TVs and a nice dark-wall ambience. In the past, I've had Gen. Tso's chicken with fried rice, which I highly recommend, but today I wanted to do something different so I went with Kung pow chicken, which ads nice fresh vegetables and peanuts to a spicy chicken mix. It's a bit less sweet than General Tso's. I also had egg drop soup which was pleasant and mild as an appetizer. I might want a bit more rice delivered with my meal, my friend today asked for a second rice serving with his dish, and mine was a little short on the very pleasant fried rice. We had terrific service from our waitress, she was helpful and attentive and friendly. After your meal explore the grocery store. There are a lot of unique food opportunities in the cavernous grocery store, and, believe it or not, there's a ping pong tournament space in the back. A fun and fascinating visit.

My moo goo gai pan had barely any chicken in it. There were huge chunks of vegetables and it was way too starchy. It was like they were trying to compensate for the lack of protein in it. I haven't ordered from them this year, but I did tonight. Listen the economy is rough for everyone but I paid $15 for this chicken and they used maybe 1/8 of a chicken breast in it. Not cool. Hate to leave the negative review, but I need to warn people that they're using filler food to complete the orders and charging more. What's not cool anywhere these days is paying more and getting way less than just a few years ago. All of us are working hard to earn money and it just feels so disappointing to not get what you pay for, especially when you're paying more than you used to. I don't know who to blame for this. If I wanted a carton of vegetables I would have eaten a frozen bag for $2.50 tonight.

The energy inside was lively, full of students and guests chatting about their days, studying, and bouncing around really. It felt like the heart of UAB campus. After I came back to place my order, I got half lo mein and fried rice with teriyaki chicken as my protein. The lo mein was worth the wait! The staff was so kind and welcoming. I had a few questions and needed some recommendations and the chef was so informative and nice. I definitely will be stopping by Mein Bowl again hoping to try their sushi next time, I cannot believe I never thought to go there in the first place!
