Black pepper chicken
Mischa J.

I had to give you your props! Magic is the right name to call yourself. We DoorDash lunch from you and it was SO good. Clare got the black pepper delight with chicken and shrimp in empire sauce. Conn got sweet and sour chicken. Roxs got fried rice with veggies. And, I got black pepper chicken. All dishes came with an average tasting egg roll. But, them entrees are simply delicious. Zero complaints. Everybody loved their food and wants to get you again next week. Thank For the Magic, that stuff good.

Food was amazing! Only thing missing was some chopsticks lol. 10/10 recommend, would purchase again. The portion sizes are large so that's a major plus!

Thai Coconut Curry Shrimp

Today, I ordered online and picked up the Orange Chicken and Thai Coconut Shrimp. Both came with fried rice and egg rolls. I also ordered Crab Rangoons. Let's talk about the good: I ordered around 1:30p and it took about 10 minutes to get my order. The staff is always nice and prompt. And the store was nice and clean. The Crab Rangoons were really good. I do recommend that it's something you try. My favorite item of this lunch The portion sizes are huge, you could have 2-3 meals off of just one plate. Now let's really talk: The Orange Chicken and Thai Coconut Curry Shrimp were meh, mid, bland etc. I would not go back to this restaurant based on these dishes. I was surprised at the lack of seasoning on these. The fried rice was undercooked, dry and tasteless. There may be better things on the menu but these two dishes were not it. The egg roll was ok as well.

General Tso's

Best Chinese downtown and 2nd best Chinese in Birmingham altogether. I like China Master on the street over a lot too but Magic Wok is better. Egg rolls are maybe a bit better than average but the main dishes are very good and worthy of 5 stars. This visit I got General Tso's which comes with 2 big scoops of rice and an egg roll for like $12. Great value and big portion. Big fan of this place and within walking distance of UAB and the hospitals.

Cashew Chicken with fried rice!

Ordered meal to go from Mr. Wok. Finding a parking spot was a challenge. However my food was waiting for me. The online order app is pretty easy to use. My meal was easily enough for two, so I was able to share with a coworker. Food was much better than I was expecting. The restaurant looked clean and the hostess was pleasant.

A hot mess

The food is AMAZING! Very flavorful and fresh! But if you get it to go ask for everything in a separate bag. Otherwise, you get this mess!

If you ask anyone who has worked in or around UAB hospital where to get good Chinese food, they will usually say Magic Wok. Located near the corner of 5th Ave S and 19th St S, Magic Wok is in the heart of downtown and basically on the UAB Hospital campus just across the street from Courtyard by Marriott. In between Milo's and Subway, MW is sort of on a food court strip because next door to Subway is a Mexican restaurant Los Juane's and next to that the Falafel Cafe. MW looks much larger on the inside. There are several tables with chairs that can probably fit about 30 people comfortably. The decor inside is very simple and I can imagine their lunches are loud as many hospital employees chat about their day. On this visit, I ordered a take-out of 4 items for dinner. There is no table side service so you que up at a counter with 2 registers and a large menu on the wall behind. I placed my order and then sat at one of the nearby tables and waited. I was quite amazed at how quickly the food was prepared. I visualized 2 cooks stir frying my 4 dishes at break-neck speeds. There were only 2 other couples inside so it wasn't a busy weeknight. Rachel tried the Hunan Beef. The slices of beef were nicely coated in dark sauce and tasted good. The brocolli, water chestnut, onions and carrots were all fresh. The remaining space of the takeout container was filled with simple soy sauce fried rice which I am not a big fan of as it's the lowest form of fried rice... just rice stir fried with soy sauce and salt. I would much rather just have plain steamed rice. Matthew ordered the Curry Beef. This was basically the same as Hunan except it was stir fried in a very mild light brown tumeric curry. I wasn't impressed as there was barely a hint of coconut in their curry. This time there was only carrots, onions and bell pepper in his dish. Tammy tried the Thai coconut chicken curry. If this was their spin on that traditional thai dish then they fell short. It wasn't very flavorful nor spicy and again I struggled to taste any coconut. I tried the Shrimp lo mein. I was pleased with my dish and I did tell myself that it would be difficult to mess up a stir fry noodle dish. I requested no veggies which meant that I would get more noodles in it's place. My entire container was filled with tenderly tossed egg noodles that had been stir fried with stips of carrots, onions, cabbage and shrimp. They were generous with the large shrimp which were cooked perfectly. The entire dish was as I was expecting and tasted pretty good. All our dishes came with an egg roll which was also cooked nicely. Their prices are a little above average but they do provide large portions. I would place Magic Wok as one of the asian comfort food restaurants that I consider decent food at decent prices. If given the opportunity, I would dine-in and try a different dish. See ya on Yelp.

Shrimp Fried Rice

I'm utterly disgusted but also very shocked at how poor the quality of my meal was. I ordered shrimp fried rice via DoorDash and the shrimp wasn't deveined and literally still had the feces tracts inside. I will not be ordering from here again.

Some of the best Chinese I've tasted. Fried proteins are okay. But the teriyaki, Szechuan, and the fried rice is always on point. 10/10

Mein Bowl - Tempura Shrimp Roll

Mein Bowl

I grabbed a quick meal at Mein Bowl in the Hill Student Center, before a class and the experience…read morewas just as I wanted. The energy inside was lively, full of students and guests chatting about their days, studying, and bouncing around really. It felt like the heart of UAB campus. When it came to my food I did have to come back after small time break because the lo mein (my go-to). After I came back to place my order, I got half lo mein and fried rice with teriyaki chicken as my protein. The lo mein was worth the wait! It was my first time trying the teriyaki chicken and I definitely will be ordering again! The atmosphere made the meal even better, energetic, social, and full of those random, conversations you only hear at the Hill! I would end this by saying Mein Bowl is a convenient and dependable spot when you're on campus and need something fast.

Although Mein Bowl isn't usually the first place that comes to mind when I am on campus and need a…read morequick bite, the lines are always way too long at any other restaurant. I noticed the line at Mein Bowl was empty and decided to give it a try and am so glad I did! I got orange chicken, white rice, and some crab rangoons. Everything tasted fresh and the portion size was great I had leftovers that I ate for dinner. The service was so quick compared to the experiences I've had with other places on campus. The staff was so kind and welcoming. I had a few questions and needed some recommendations and the chef was so informative and nice. I definitely will be stopping by Mein Bowl again hoping to try their sushi next time, I cannot believe I never thought to go there in the first place!
