One of my favorite spots to get Chinese food and have been eating here for the past 2 years now. Never had an issue with them, they're always nice when they pick up the phone. Food always comes out hot, fresh and ready to go and I have several favorites I pick from every time I go there. I absolutely love their Yum-Yum sauce. It's a great spot if you're craving Chinese and you've happened to be in or around UAB. The prices are fair for the large portion you get - best way to describe it is that you won't be able to finish it all in once sitting. Based on the food I'd probably give a 4 and 1/2 because it's pretty good but this is my 2nd time having an issue with the service. I made an order over the phone and asked for the Mongolian Empire substitute rice for lo mein. The lady confirmed my order and said 10 minutes. When I arrived to Magic Wok I went to the counter and the lady asked my order I told her I had ordered the Mongolian Empire.. she didn't ask for my name so I figured she knew I was the call in since I'd just called less than 10 minutes ago. 10 minutes later I'm still waiting on my food. When it came I walked to my car, checked my food and had rice instead of lo mein.. no big deal.. I just called back and let the lady know I'd be coming back because they didn't swap the rice for lo mein. She asked me if I paid with visa.. I said yes then she goes on to say "the ticket doesn't say lo mein" .. I said well I asked for it. She says well we can remake order for $2 up charge.. I say fine and go back in to wait another 10 minutes for food. Once I paid my $2 charge and got my food I left. As I'm walking to my car I get a call from Magic Wok saying that they're waiting for me to come pick up my order. I say "you just gave me my order".. she says "no it's still here, the Mongolian empire with lo mein" .... I said that was me you just handed it to. She says "oh I see now, when you came in to get your order the first time you should've said it was a call in but you made it seem like you were placing order." I just said okay and hung up but I felt that was a very unprofessional remark. If a person calls in their order you should always ask for their name that way when someone comes in you ask for their name so there won't be a mix up. Located in the heart of the UAB " walk to lunch" area, Magic Wok offers Chinese food freshly cooked to order and served fast. There is no buffet or steam table but to me that's a plus. Cooked to order means no soggy food and the ability to specify certain items be added or deleted from the dish. And if, like me, you are sensitive to the MSG used extensively in most Chinese restaurants, they will happily leave it out on request. The food has been consistently good, the service is always friendly, and there are a few tables outside if you like. Oh, and one more thing... This place is always spotlessly clean. When someone leaves a table an employee is there almost immediately to spray with cleaner and wipe the dirty table (not just wipe it down with a dirty wet cloth). read more

Magic Wok consistently delivers. I'm usually a General Tso's or Sesame Chicken kind of girl, and these offerings are good every time. They come with fried rice and an egg roll. I will usually order from work a few blocks away, and by the time I walk over there, it is ready. The portions are heaping, making good value for money spent. Service is friendly, and the owners are requiring masks to be served at the restaurant. At this time, there is no dine in, only takeout. Late after work, chillin at the hotel, wondering what to eat for din. Delivery was limited & I didn't want to wait an hour. Looked out my window & saw magic wok. Between that or subway, I'd pick that. Looked up the reviews & decided to give it a go. Ordered chicken lo mein which came with fried rice & an egg Roll. I also ordered a cup of egg drop soup. Egg drop soup was yuuuummy! It tasted so good & I loved the peppery spice throughout. The chicken lo mein was good too. The flavor was all there and the portion was enough for two. The rice should've just been left off. It was plain & bland. Not note worthy at all. Egg roll, meh. Had lots of veggies & things stuffed in it, but it was just lacking flavor. Even soy sauce & duck sauce didn't help. Quick, hot food. Nice, friendly service. I'd def try this spot again. read more

I have been to Magic Wok a handful of times and have had decent experiences each trip. This time I decided to try their spring rolls and curry tofu. Tofu preference depends on the individuals as texture and firmness varies from place to place. Simply put I wasn't a huge fan of the texture of the tofu. However the spice and flavor of the tofu was pretty good. The spring rolls were enjoyable and the overall experience wasn't a bad one. This restaurants sustainability practices were okay as my to go order was packaged well, but non of the orders components were reusable. The covid regulations at this location were satisfactory and depends mostly on cooperation of the customers and during my time there the guidelines laid out by Magic Wok were followed. Overall an okay experience and I wouldn't mind going back and trying other menu items. read more

This is the best chinese restaurant I've been to since moving to Birmingham. Very welcoming atmosphere, music wasn't to loud. Ordering was super fast and easy, they even made the general tso's to our heat preference. Food came out very hot and fresh, and also very quickly. If I could give them Zero stars I would. I ordered Beef Broccoli and there was a worm in my food!!!!! I showed the woman at the counter and she confirmed it was a worm but the owner said it was from the broccoli. REALLLYYYYY!??? This thing is clearly a worm the woman then took the worm off my food and went along with what he said. They didn't know I had already took a pic. Please use caution when eating here! read more

Cooked right, and service is a 10. I had the sweet and sour chicken that was magnificent to the last bite. It wasn't just a few pieces either, like places do. They garnish with a mound full of fried rice that was divine. I love the fact this place has out all the sauces, fortune cookies and chopsticks you need and don't have to ask for them each time. Turn off 5th by Milos. Back door to milos, Magic Wok and Subway. Eaay walk from medical center. 2 big positives: 1) They still have Heavy duty forks. So many places, especially Chinese, have started using litlle, cheap flimsy fork. Good work. 2) They have the local CHRISTIAN RADIO station playing. Came here after a major fail of walking a half mile to a closed BBQ joint. Chinese food was the last thing I thought of eating after traveling 2000+ miles from Los Angeles. The food was surprisingly good, maybe I just had really low expectations? I ordered the kung pao chicken. It comes with fried rice and a vegetable egg roll. All the ingredients seem fresh, but the overall taste was kind of bland. It seemed to be over powered by oyster sauce. This place is quite clean and with quick service. Trying to find a place to eat downtown(ish) and we saw this place among others across from the medical centre. We ordered the sweet and sour chicken and Thai coconut curry chicken. We should have remembered that portions here are bigger than we are used to and we could have shared one. Both dishes were average, other than their enormous serving size. The Thai dish, to me, tasted nothing like curry or coconut, but it wasn't bad per se. It was fast and the facility was clean. Unfortunately my experience tonight was very poor. Being a medical professional my hours are difficult at best. I had a chance to grab dinner around 2045 to what appeared the disappointment of the individuals at the restaurant. Upon entering, they looked at their watches, I asked if it was too late to place an order, they obliged. The General Tso's chicken order was very soggy and tasteless. The rice was EXTREMELY sticky. I called in my order and was the only person in line. When I walked to the register, the owner (asian male) looks at me and proceeds to turn his back to me and talk about personal topics (the school of fine arts, etc) with another employee. He never even acknowledged my presence. Please note that he is always at the register taking orders. I work in the area and am familiar with his lackadaisical attitude. This is not the first time that he has been rude and nonchalant when dealing with patrons. A young black lady came from the back and assisted me with my order. She was very nice and cordial. The owner needs to take some pointers from his staff or work in the back where he has no contact with people. I will not continue to spend my money where I am not respected. He needs my business, I don't need his business. There are plenty of other establishments nearby who would appreciate my business. The owner needs to learn customer service etiquette. Magic Wok is a super low key Chinese place located in the heart of downtown Birmingham. It's my favorite place to get takeout! They give you so much food for a low price. I can get up to 4 meals out of each dish I order! Delicious and the staff is so friendly! read more

We walked to this location from UAB hospital based on a recommendation by staff. The food was just "okay" in taste.

The food is your typical Americanized Chinese food, so it's important to keep in mind that you're not going here for higher end and / or authentic Chinese food. That being said, they do give you a decent sized portion, but the taste of the brown sauce used in their stir fry was simply too sweet for my liking, based on the Kung Pao chicken I had ordered. I went there a second time, just to see if the brown sauce's taste had improved, but unfortunately, it was still too sweet for my taste buds. I do enjoy sweet foods, but when the amount of sugar in a dish kills off a lot of the savory taste, it's simply not that enjoyable. There are better Chinese-style eateries in the area. I simply don't recommend this place. I did give it a two star rating instead of one star rating, because the service was fast, and the place is reasonably clean. read more

Good quality food, very reasonable prices, and nice / quick service Egg rolls were like $1.50 or so, big and had a nice crispy texture and a good taste The dumplings were very tasty and I loved how crispy they were as well, but they could be bigger. The soy ginger sauce that accompanied it was tasty. The Mongolian beef was tender was a variety of big and smaller pieces and it came with onion and green onion, fried rice and an egg roll- all for under $9. I wish the mongolian beef had those crispy rice noodles on them, as those are my fav- but that's a personal preference and it was otherwise really saucy and flavorful. They brought my food to me as I waited in the dining room for my order, and it was probably 5 minutes or so for my food to come out. Recommend! read more

Magic Wok is a great place for a quick lunch if you are working in the UAB medical campus. The food is reasonably priced and the service is quick. My personal favorite is the garlic chicken. Their menu items are a little more diverse than other typical places in Birmingham, for example, they have a lemon black pepper chicken I've been wanting to try, and I've never seen that at other places.
