I haven't been here in awhile and decided to stop by recently for something other than an egg roll, which by the way, are some of the best I've had, especially when hot. On this visit I ordered the small black pepper chicken. The dish seems to be prepared differently at every restaurant. China Way's is tasty and sweet. Their version is not spicy and you can see the black pepper that covers the chicken. My order came out fairly quick (I went through the drive-thru), and the service was friendly. A worker from another restaurant I used to visit was happy to see me and recognized me. For awhile, this place was a hit or miss depending on the cooks. Today was a good day. I will be back because I live close and as stated earlier, I enjoy their egg rolls especially. Pro Tip: Go through the drive thru. No eating in the restaurant since the pandemic. read more

We primarily chose China Way because of its proximity to our travel route. It's a tiny spot and looks to be a local takeaway. The restaurant did a brisk lunch business while we dined. DH had a beef fried rice and I had the bourbon chicken combo. The most complimentary thing I can say is that everything was hot and salty. It would take too long to detail the inadequacies. I've tried this place twice so far with my staple hot and sour soup only order... and an order of a lunch special. When I ordered only a cup of hot and sour soup, it was a larger portion than what comes with the lunch special. I also felt that there was more "stuff" in it than what was in my lunch special. It's soup, it isn't totally homogenous so I get there will be times like that. Future visits will reveal whether it will have substance on a regular basis. I love my hot and sour soup, can you tell?? As for flavor, it's pretty good. In my lunch special, I ordered the mandarin special with tofu instead of meat. I am a meat eater, but I like myself some fried tofu too! It was served over fried rice. I am not sure if I can request just white rice, but I will try it next time. I've found that "fried rice" around these parts (Birmingham) consists of rice, fried with soy sauce. I am used to the peas and carrots fried rice... to me, this soy sauce fried rice isn't worth the extra calories, but some may enjoy it. The mix of veggies was great. Brocolli, carrots, mushrooms, baby corn, water chesnuts... I didn't get bored eating it. And the flavor was pretty good. Not super sweet and not super salty. I was satisfied and enjoyed it. What can I say that already hasn't been said. Cheap prices for plenty of food. That is the bottom line. It is a sketchy little place. But worth the visit for a carry-out order. The quality of the food is pretty good too. Not the best I have ever had. But certainly not the worst Chinese food out there. With no website, or extensive picture of a menu, ordering was up in the air. We only saw pictures of the Lunch/Dinner specials side. And that is apparently what they give you when you order (I'm guessing unless you specify). Everything with the special comes in a styrofoam box. You get your meat, side of fried rice, choice of soup (with wontons), and an egg roll. All for $6-$7. Everything was very tasty. We got the Mongolian Beef, shrimp fried rice, and the egg drop soup. Nothing to complain about there. Once we got a menu, we saw you can order typical Chinese take out boxes and not just the special. So we will probably do that next time. I've always enjoy eating Chinese food every since I can remember and I found out that some Chinese food aren't the same compare to other restaurants. We were out in the area and I decided to try this place out since my mom mention that they have good food, but that was 20 years ago and time has change. They have a drive thru that I didn't realize until I was inside the restaurant and it convenient for anybody that doesn't want to go inside. Since this was my first visit, I went with the two items plate which let you pick two items off the menu for $9.05 and it include fried rice & egg roll. I also got a small hot and sour soup for curiosity to see how good there soup is. The two items I got were lemon chicken and shrimp with mixed vegetables. I enjoyed the shrimp with mixed vegetables, but I can't say the same for the lemon chicken. I hate they use process chicken instead of real chicken because all I was tasting was mostly breaded and the lemon sauce was more like a sticky syrup that had them sticking together. I'll definitely come back and try something different, but I won't order anything that'll has anything breaded. read more

My husband and I drove through this establishment last night. I am sorry but food was terrible. Wonton soup was broth that had no flavor. Wontons were partially cooked and there was nothing else! No water chestnuts no vegetables. My beef fried rice had some flavor but I also tasted much grease. The beef was grisly. Kung poa chicken was also very grisly. I would be lying if I said that I've ever visited a Drive Thru Chinese Restaurant!!! Hey, you experience something new every day and a pleasant experience this was. The ordering process was fast and my order was completely correct. It helps that the menu board is filled with pictures. I ordered the Chicken, Shrimp and Broccoli along with two egg rolls and fried rice, which was very tasteful. The cashier at the window greeted me with an ear to ear smile which was refreshing. Take out here means a lot of food for a cheap price. You might easily give this place a 5 if you don't care what goes in your body, because it's darn tasty. A lot of the takeout is rice, and it's almost all fried and sweet, but if that's your game, hit it! The inside is scary, run-down, and depressing. Ignore that if you're hungry, and just do takeout. Unless your place is scarier. The people are nice, and the food is tasty, but if you're avoiding wheat gluten or sugar, the choices are highly limited. I order the Mongolian beef (which I'm praying is gluten free), and always feel cheated when I look at the mounds of Gen. Tso chicken my friends get compared to the mostly onions I get in mine. Skimpy. Ah well. If I can discover a dish without gluten that doesn't suck, then I'm all on board. But dang that fried honey chicken looks good. NO! Be strong. (Sulks) read more

This place doesn't need an elaborate review because it's not an elaborate place. Nice and basic, which is usually just what I am looking for in take-out Chinese food. Basically you get pretty darned good Chinese food (I'd put it in about the 80th percentile), a lot of it, and at dirt cheap prices. Massive egg rolls are only $1.25 a piece, and you can buy a whole quart of Egg Drop or Hot & Sour soup for a little over three bucks. The entree portions are larger than most places and they cost about 20% less. I think this is the best Chinese you'll find right now in the area. One other thing: Yelp shows it in the wrong place, on the other side of I-20 on Oporto-Madrid. It is on O-M Blvd but by Walmart right before Montclair. read more

The food was exactly what I wanted it to be. The only reason they lost a star with me is because I was quoted that my order would be ready in 10-15 minutes however I waited much longer. I ordered crab Rangoon and Singapore mai fun and both were delicious. I should have ordered the Singapore noodles spicy as well since I like some kick to my meals. This place has been our take-out go-to for years. As another reviewer stated previously, it's a great value. I really do think they have exceptionally good Hot and Sour Soup. I also highly recommend the Moo Shoo Chicken or Pork. It's a ton of food. Ask for extra pancakes and plum sauce. Good food at a great price. The portions are huge! My husband and I split the sesame chicken every time we go. We have ventured out, but the sesame chicken is always our go to. They soup is okay. The egg rolls are good and the pot stickers are served with an amazing dipping sauce that has just a little kick. My first China Way experience was nearly 4 years ago, when I lived in Birmingham for a year. A few friends and I were drawn to the bargain prices and promise of enormous portions. The dinner special nets you a main entree (sesame chicken, broccoli beefs etc.), fried rice, a sizable fried egg roll and your choice of hot and sour or egg drop soup (complete with fried wontons to top it off). Don't forget the token fortune cookies as well. This time around I ordered the sesame chicken and my wife the fried tofu with vegetables. Together with all the extras, I swear it weighed nearly 5 pounds. For 8 bucks each! What a deal. Now that you know a single dinner special could feed an impoverished family for lunch, on to the actual food itself; the fried rice is simply soy sauce and rice, no egg, diced veggies or meat. The sesame chicken was reasonably tasty as far as these Chinese-American style diners go. The tofu vegetable dish was fairly standard. The egg roll was LARGE and actually partially filled with meat, what a pleasant surprise. To be honest, it was mediocre and so was the soup. The main draw is the portions, we stuffed ourselves to excess but still had enough for dinner the next night. The food is slightly above average as far as these enterprises go. It's not exactly authentic, but it's close and it's good enough for most. There isn't much Chinese on this side of town, so when the mood strikes again for slightly-greasy take out, we'll probably be back! read more

My husband and I drove past thinking "oh my word, that looks dodgy as heck" but one night we got a craving for some Chinese and called ahead to place a takeout order. We ordered their special "two plated" for $9.05, with which two meats, fried rice and an egg roll is included. Overall a yum dinner, but there was some sort of crunchy cube shaped vegetable in the garlic chicken and it kind of ruined the entire dish. Secondly, there was basically a whole sliced up onion on top of the Mongolian beef... not a fan. Apart from that though it was enjoyable and satiated our Chinese cuisine needs.
