It's been over 10 years since I've had Mongolian BBQ. I went to Yummy Bowl with a large group for a celebration. It was pretty busy because there were several other large groups there at the same time. The servers did a good job considering the circumstances. I guess I did a good job of picking ingredients, seasoning, and sauces because my entrée was good. It wasn't high end hibachi but I got much more variety with the ability to build my on bowl. I also tried the chicken wings and stuffed jalapeños. There was nothing special about the wings. They were small lightly breaded fried wings with a side of buffalo sauce for dipping. Score more like 3.5. I know I'm super late trying yummy bowl. But I had to make my way after hearing over and over again how delicious it is! Finally the opportunity and time arrived. This place is in the old O'Charleys on Lakeshore. Upon entering, the building smelled bad, like old mop water. This was almost a turn off. But in the seating area, thankfully I could only smell the food cooking. There is a large bar in the middle with a big variety of raw veggies and meats along with seasonings and sauces. Then there's a huge grill behind the bar where the bowls are cooked to order. (If you remember Genghis Grill, it's that same concept.) They provide you with a small steel bowl that you fill with your choice of items from the bar. Then they cook it up for you. We ordered spring rolls and wings and each got a bowl. I couldn't decide between udon noodles and rice so I got both with the fried rice to the side. The fried rice was really bland to eat on its own. The spring rolls were typical, tasty but nothing special. The wings were crispy and yummy with my little hot sauce/ soy sauce mixture. The service was decent, nothing impeccable. She delivered the bowls to our table and asked how everything looked. We each enjoyed the bowls. They truly were yummy. I ate about half and was able to bring the rest home. They do offer an all you can eat option, with no take out... but if you are strategic in filling your bowl, then it's turns out to be plenty of food. It helped even more with my and my girlfriend's anniversary, so the place got bonus points. The place has excellent music playing all the time but never so loud to drown conversation. Great place for great nutritious food. You have the choice of pasta, fruits, vegetables, protein and spices for each individual bowl. Each bowl is then cooked (as shown) and delivered promptly to your table. I was disappointed that they bunched up people when seated with apparently little caution for Covid-19. Thankfully, employees were wearing masks. We were served ample water by our host and he also gave us a to-go bag for carry out. The dining area was nicely decorated with soft music and flat screen TVs to keep you occupied while you dine. There was ample parking and the restaurant is easy to get to. This is going to become one of our "go-to" restaurants when we are in Birmingham. I highly recommend it! I forgot to add that they are very kid friendly and also offer a "kiddie" bowl. I was happy to have visited this restaurant recently. The food was a good quality and the taste was better than I expected. We ordered a bowl which is prepared on a hibachi grill after you go to the buffet style set up to select your ingredients. There wasn't much social distancing when you're standing in-line, but I was glad to see they had hand sanitizer and gloves available for customers to wear/use. We also ordered veggie rolls and sushi and both were delicious. I'd definitely come back to visit. I have been eating to get some Hibachi type food, and decided to go to Yummy Bowl. I have been here before and it always fills me up and tastes amazing. I always have enough to take home and eat as a snack later. I went inside and saw all of the workers were wearing gloves and some had masks on.They were nice and friendly in taking my order and they had my order ready in a timely manner, even though the place was really busy. I'll say that the food is awesome! The concept of preparing your own bowl of ingredients , the way you like it, the seasoning, is ahead of its time! The cooks are always friendly but most of the staff aren't very friendly, in my opinion. A lot of them act as if you owe them something! A smile goes a long way! Unfortunately, many of them don't practice that concept! If the food wasn't great, I probably wouldn't eat there. All because most of the staff doesn't seem very friendly. The restaurant is good and clean, I'll give them that.. But they MUST get a hand on the customer service aspect of the business. The dry attitudes and unfriendly looks have to go!
