I really enjoy my meals here at Kim's Barbecue House. The restaurant looks like an old school bbq joint and the parking lot was packed. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the employees and a few customers, which made us feel right at home. Our waitress was super friendly and took our drink order right away. She returned quickly with our sweet tea and a basket of hush puppies and butter. I ordered a bbq/fried chicken combo platter and my wife ordered a fried chicken platter. The food was absolutely delicious; everything was cooked perfectly and was blazing hot. Our waitress kept checking on us, filling our cups, and engaging in conversation. It was a great experience and we will definitely return to have lunch again soon. I randomly picked this place today while working near Dunn. Went into the place and it just felt like be back home at the local restaurants. I ate the special of the day. White fish and shrimp and it was delicious. They also served us an appetizer of hush puppies which were great. I'd recommend this place to anyone. Also the waitress was very attentive. Cheap Eats Alert! We fed a family of 4 for $15. And had to take some of our food in a to-go container. Needed a quick, no-frills stop off I-95 South Bound and this was it. It's behind some other stores and next to a tattoo shop. Tons of cars, trucks and what not in the parking lot but the parking goes around back. Community seating so you might get lucky enough to sit with some friendly chatty locals. No kids menu but they will discount any meal by $1 for the kids. But honestly, for my 5 year old, my portion of Fish & Shrimp Combo was large enough to that we shared it. Watch for the bones though. Free refills for sweet tea. Kemp Lamm, co-owner of Dunn Benson Motorsports, frequents this spot and even has his own special named after him! Lunch Feb 11 Why 4 Stars? Home style cooked food and a great value price! Had the Tuesday Special Fried Pork Chops (that is with an 's', meaning you get 2) Got Chicken Pastry & mashed potatoes as side. Oh yeah, Chicken Pastry is Carolina Speak for Chicken Dumplings. Totally decent but other than the price point nothing remarkable at all. Fried fish is ok, chicken salad is fine though a bit gloopy and the bbq is completely innocuous though very bland. I've never eaten inside but from observing the wait staff whilst waiting for my order they all seem very friendly and on top of things. Overall I don't think I would recommend Kim's though it kid a good option if you want a meat + two for less than 10 bucks. read more

My mother (God rest her soul) and her beloved sisters used to dine here before going to "The Dance" in Benson, once or twice per week, and only just a few years ago. I was privileged to join them on several late lunches or for dinner before they rushed off to meet dear friends. The food and atmosphere is not 4-Star. I don't believe that's what the proprietors intended. In fact, just the opposite. The food is delicious, filling, and economical. A place for everyone to share. It doesn't get more Harnett County or small-town SOUTHERN than this! This is what gives Kim's it's local charm. To overhear the familiar chats, friends/cousins catching up, asking after each others families and exchanging heartfelt smiles and hugs... Not a bad place to share a meal. I could give this 4-5 stars on food alone...but the service adds another 5 stars. This summer I was traveling thru the area and my recent pick for easy access BBQ on 95 was closed. I'm glad it was. Kim's was much better. Like Joe Friday in Dragnet I wanted "just the BBQ Ma'am". However I got the message quickly and politely that I'd make the mistake of my life if I did not order the special of the day which added chicken wings to my plate. Bottom line... Great cue, excellent chicken, a killer slaw. Nuff said. Then came the over and above service... I came prepared with my Family. Dollar cooler. The staff... I should say family...jumped in to make sure I was loaded, chilled and sealed for the journey, including finding tape to seal the cheap top to my cheap cooler. A delightful experience! read more

We stopped here on our way South to Georgia. It's right off i-95 so we decided to check it out. Stopped in about 12pm and the place was packed with locals so that was a good sign. Extremely reasonable prices and a lot to choose from -- fried chicken, bbq, seafood and more. The fried chicken was phenomenal and the bbq was fantastic, but be aware that it's Carolina bbq so there's no sauce. By far my favorite thing was the hush puppies. Service was very friendly as well. We got away with a big lunch for two for only $13 before tip. We will definitely stop here again on our next road trip! read more

It saddens me to have to write this review in 2014. What saddens me further, is that I am not surprised. We were there today. I parked in front of the door, and called inside to ask a few questions and place an order. I should explain that (even though I am African American) my voice is nondescript. In other words, I don't "sound" like any particular race or ethnic group. More often than not, people are shocked (even when they try to hide it) when I walk in and they see a big black woman. On the phone, the woman was extremely nice and friendly. She answered my questions, and went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with my order. After the phone call, we drove to a nearby store for cigarettes. Upon returning to Kim's, my partner went inside to retrieve our order. Twice. The first time, she came back out, with no food and eyes as big as saucers. She wasn't certain if she was overreacting, and came out to run the scene by me and get my opinion. She said she walked in, three (Caucasian) men were lined up ahead of her. She got into the line, and each man placed an order and stepped aside. As her turn came, the woman walked away from the counter. She spoke to her, and was ignored. The woman busied herself (doing nothing really) and completely acted as if my partner was not in front of her. She then proceeded to call others up for their food. Still saying nothing to my partner. I (being the optimist) tell her to go back, it was probably just a "moment" and that I was sure she would get some service soon. She went back in. I waited. Seven minutes later, she came back out, with no food, and a look of disgust on her face. She proceeded to tell me that she'd approached the counter again, and the women ignored her again. She called for her attention, but the woman told her to hold on for a second. That second never ended. Meanwhile, all other faces (that were white) were being serviced all around her. From orders being taken, to food being delivered, and in some cases, banter being exchanged. She waited for six minutes before exiting with nothing. Again. My partner is the kindest, most patient, and sweetest person I know. The anger she exited that building carrying, was obvious from the time I saw her face. I have NEVER seen her so livid! Now, I won't say it was a race thing. I don't know. At the very least, I would definitely say that it was unprofessional, unbecoming, and unsettling. Customer service was lacking (at least for my partner) and the environment was borderline klan-like. This review focused on one woman, the one behind the counter, but the general feel was throughout the building. Just sad. Their food could be great, but we will NEVER find out. I had the BBQ pork with fries and potato salad. I was not impressed with it at all. The waitress was very kind. It's inexpensive but that's where it ends. Maybe it's because I'm not use to NC BBQ but the pork was too dry. The menu was also very limited. Hush puppies were good though. I wouldn't come back to this place again. read more

Kim's isn't bad, but it is inconsistent. On walking in they all just sort of alternatively stared at me or ignored me, but nobody invited me to sit down. But then when the waitress finally arrived, she was as nice as could be. The BBQ is good. I assume not a wood-burner, but the flavor was decent and the skin in the Q was a nice add (and properly done). The fried chicken is good, but not as good as that place down the road in Clinton. Sides were fine. I don't know that I'd go back, not that I get to Dunn often, but I didn't find anything to object to. And for what it's worth, I noticed people of color were treated the same as anyone else, one waitress even sat down and kept one gentleman company since he was eating alone. read more

Re: Keisha N.'s review - i was very saddened to read about her experience. I am Korean American, and have been there multiple times, and had nothing but good experiences. That being said, i don't doubt that ugly people and their ignorant opinions can pop up anytime, anywhere. The atmosphere is southern, and customers have been exclusively white when i go, but i don't feel like i have been discriminated against in the past. Very cheap, $6.49 daily specials. My favorite is the $3 catfish nuggets (just regular fried catfish, but not the meal size, and not on the menu) as an appetizer. complimentary hushpuppies are good. your meal comes with an ice cream bowl, there is a soft serve machine in the back. no one told me this the first time i went, and i put ketchup in my bowl, so they brought me another bowl but failed to tell me about the ice cream. most daily specials are good, however i didnt like the stew beef and rice very much. I haven't tried their BBQ, and since you can't smell the BBQ from outside the restaurant, i don't think i'm inclined to. but, if you're looking for southern home cooking comfort food, they got that covered. the service has always been good for me, food comes out fast. this is a place that caters to old white ppl that eat supper rather than dinner, if you catch my drift. they close at 8, so don't dawdle. read more

Very disappointing NC barbecue that Kim's is supposed to be noted for. Pork was completely dried out, had an "off" taste, and they didn't even have any bbq sauce to try to make it taste better! Cole slaw and hush puppies were ok. Not impressed. read more

My fiance (Dominican so she looks black) and I (Salvadoran but look mexican, so I've been told) were traveling to Myrtle Beach, hunger struck, so we decided to make a quick pit stop. We decided to hit a local place, because we love locally owned businesses, and it said bar b que. I did not see any pits at all, 1st strike. We enter, again after a long drive, to use the bathroom and get some food BUT a pin would've dropped and that would've been the loudest sound, and to make matters worse the hostess up front couldn't have been much nicer to the client leaving and then the tude and scowl on face when she hesitantly told us we could sit anywhere, a complete 360 at the drop of a dime, 2nd strike. The lady that attended us was so sweet (we were about to leave if it wasn't for her) was more than happy to help us with our order. After we got our food (A giant hamburger smothered in gravy, which was real good by the way) I had to look around and marvel at how one sided the clientele was in there, no problem for us at all but I was loving how the younger ladies, that had such an ugly mug on their faces, be so courteous to the other folks coming in but and look towards our way with such disdain, 3rd strike. We left, my fiance half way ate all her food and I decided to just scarf mines down. It is 2015 but it seems that not everywhere has gotten the memo. Look, if u r of a certain shade just start looking for somewhere else for grub cause its obvious that GREEN (money) is not the color that they prefer! My mother and I ate supper at Kim's yesterday (1-23-16) afternoon around 4:00 PM. We ordered the barbecued ribs, potato salad and snap beans along with iced tea. The potato salad and beans were delicious, however, the ribs were the worst I have ever eaten anywhere. I've eaten at Kim's many times, but I have never had the ribs and will never order them again. They were, I guess, burnt. The sauce tasted good, but the ribs were crusty. My mother could not even bite them. As an afterthought, what I should have done was complained and had them bring us something else, however, I didn't do that. My Mom took her ribs out and I brought them home and put them out in the woods for the animals. I know that Kim's is an excellent place to eat and their food is generally good. We also, for some reason, had a problem with waitresses yesterday. I had to actually get up and go find one to get extra napkins. They were not very attentive at all. However, having said all this, I will still continue to eat there because, like I said, they generally have good food. Hopefully, they were just having a bad day. read more
