My daughter needed a prom dress but with three weeks until prom, we weren't able to custom order. We found both a prom gown and a graduation dress and purchased off the rack. Yvonne, the proprietor, made the alterations and delivered the perfectly fitted dresses in under two weeks. She also made Covid masks that perfectly match the dresses. We are over the moon happy with our purchases and with the gold standard service we received. What a treasure this shop is. UPDATE: Today, the day of my daughters prom, we realized that the hook that aligns with the bustle was missing. Frantically I left a message for Yvonne and she got back to me immediately. With her calm demeanor, she told me to come right in with the dress and she would make the alteration on the spot. It took under 15 minutes and the dress is now perfect. Isn't it cheongsam (i.e. qipao) one of the most flattering dress styles you can ever wear? I have always think so and didn't hesitate to pick this style as one of the dresses that I would be wearing on my wedding day. I looked all over and even had the chance to do it overseas in different ways; through someone who does wear them sometimes and even through my in laws. However, I rather chose someone local as I wanted to be able to try, adjust and make changes on my dress until I had the perfect one. I found Kimera design through Yelp and a trusted yelper and decided to go check it out. The store itself is beautiful. Filled up with amazing taste and originality. I was looking for a qipao but I was equally impressed by her gowns styles. These are simple but so beautifully crafted, designed and fitting to a woman body in combination with the most delicate silk fabrics in different colors that I just can't imagine you will be disappointed. Kimera's experience is extremely personal and dedicated to your needs and wishes. She's got ideas, talent, excellent suggestions and planing ahead. I love how respectful towards what you want she is, tho she will suggest improvements accordingly. After all,this is all about you girl. You should not let anybody to shape what you wish. For my dress we had 5 sessions from design and fitting until it was ready to pick up. I also wanted an special fabric after she showed me some samples. Such a beautiful glowing silk fabric with a delicate cherry blossoms pattern. I loved it and she was able to get it for me. When I first went out looking for wedding dresses I went to David's Bridal. My experience was okay, but I was disappointed with the cheap quality of their dresses, they weighed a ton and the styles were a little over the top for my personality. I was further disappointed with the lack of personal attention during what should be one of the most memorable purchases a woman can make. I then checked the many wedding dress websites and though the prices were attractive, the styles were pretty much the same as David's and I wouldn't be able to try on the dress. I did not want to take my chances. Then I had a serendipitous internet encounter--I found Kimera! The dresses on the site were perfect. Classic styles at affordable prices. And it would be custom made! Not an off the rack and altered dress, but a dress created just for me. I read some very positive reviews so I quickly called the shop and made an appointment. I got to Yvonne's shop and immediately fell in love. It was so quaint and so colorful with all of the beautiful jewel-tone shantung silk dresses hanging in her shop. And she also showcases all sorts of lovely accessories which complement her one-of-kind creations perfectly. There is also a great under garment and lingerie shop right downstairs. This was not David's. I had the shop to myself and more importantly I had Yvonne's undivided attention. I finally met Yvonne. She was wonderful. We had a great consultation. She listened to my wedding story, provided input and suggestions without being a "salesperson". I knew I was in the right place. I was going to Florida for a family event later in the week and had made some appointments to see some dresses during my visit. After meeting with Yvonne I knew that I didn't even want to waste my time looking elsewhere. I came back a few weeks later, Yvonne measured me and she sketched a lovely silhouette of her classic trumpet dress, which I knew would look great on my hour glass figure. I had recently lost weight and wanted to show it off. I had seen the perfect dress in Yvonne's portfolio that had some traditional wedding dress accessories like a little lace, a sash with just the right bling and some lovely classic fabric covered buttons down the back. It was perfect! I came back a few months later for my first fitting. I was pleasantly surprised at how little the dressed weighed and how comfortable it felt. It was exactly what I wanted and needed for our beach wedding. With each following fitting the dress looked and felt more and more perfect. I wrapped it up and off we flew to Puerto Rico. I had not tried on the dress since my last fitting at Yvonne's shop. Our wedding day arrived. I got my makeup done had my veil put on and put on my dress. I looked in the mirror and cried at how beautiful I looked and how fabulous I felt. I continued to have that feeling for the rest of the day and evening. I also needed a solution for outdoor wedding photos in Colorado. As soon as I tried on the sample coat at the Atelier I knew it was right. It felt elegant and special. The ensemble she made for me is truly one-of-a-kind. It fits like a glove. I chose the fabric for the coat with her help and she supplied the shantung in a beautiful, sophisticated color for the gown. (I even took her advice on hairstyle to offset the ensemble). Kimera is my new heart throb. If Kimera were a person and not a company -- despite what the US Supreme Court says, they're not equivalent -- I'd ask her/him/it to marry me. That's how much I love Kimera. Yvonne Chu, the owner / designer, specializes in custom-made wedding dresses and other dresses in vibrant, eye-popping colors and sensuously textured shantung silk and brocade. Her style incorporates light Asian touches here and there (in the fabrics, colors, an occasional Mandarin collar, an "obi" sash), but never in a kitschy way. She can also do traditional qipaos, though those aren't on her website. Prices are extremely fair for wedding dresses, generally; they're a complete steal for custom made wedding dresses. I felt a strange desire to book it out of there as soon as I paid my deposit in case Yvonne realized she'd undercharged me. Prices for non-wedding special occasion dresses are about on par with what you might find off the rack at Macy's -- but they are ever so much more interesting. All the sewing is done in-house by house elves, upstairs. Kimera also sells custom-made jackets (my favorite is a sheer, full length jacket designed to be worn over a dress); men's ties; messenger bags; pillows (ringbearer and sofa); costume jewelry. There's a lingerie store that shares space in the basement, too, so in the event you accidentally wear holey underwear to a fitting, you can buy an emergency pair right there. What a find! The Pros: I chose Kimera for my bridesmaids dresses, and ultimately, I am very happy with the results. The dresses were a beautiful color, beautiful shantung silk material and each bridesmaid got to choose the style that best flattered her body. All in all, they looked beautiful on the day of the wedding -- which is really all a a bride could ask for. The Cons: The process of having the bridesmaids fitted and obtaining the dresses was more difficult than it needed to be because it seems that Kimera has more business than it can currently handle. When I first chose Kimera, I was very excited. The prices seemed right and each bridesmaid could chose their own style of dress in the color I picked for a reasonable price. However, every appointment we made was rushed and there was always someone booked 30 minutes behind us. With 5 bridesmaids and a flower girl, we sometimes needed more than 30 minutes to give each bridesmaid proper attention which was difficult with the next client was staring at us waiting for us to leave. At one of our appointments, not all of the dresses were ready even though we had booked the appointment weeks in advance and I had called to confirm the day before. Pricing is inconsistent. Even though the dresses cost under $200, three of my bridesmaids were informed upfront that they needed custom sizing, which would cost an additional $75, even though their bodies are not very different than the bridesmaids who were not charged for custom fitting. Then at the end, another of my bridesmaids, who was NOT initally told she would need custom fitting, ended up being charged an additional $50 and told that her body had changed, which it definitely had not. So, I would recommend asking a lot of questions upfront about how each person is going to be charged for alterations and make sure that there are no hidden charges later on. Additionally, each bridesmaid needed 4 fittings (!) which gave us the impression that the work was being rushed and not done carefully. Given that the designer took everyone's measurements before starting the dresses, and nobody's body changed AND the dresses were extremely simple, it should not have taken 3 fiitings post the initial measurement to get these dresses right. My guess is that this is happening, again, because Kimera has too much business or not enough employees/hours of operation. If you have bridesmaids who are from out of town, I would be very wary about using Kimera -- because I cannot imagine having bridesmaids from out of town needing to come back as many times as my bridesmaids did (who were luckily local). I think if Kimera can improve customer service, they have an amazing product that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. And, if you're local and have plenty of time to be fitted, go for it! read more

The New York wedding magazines will discover this well-kept secret soon enough, but in the meantime, it remains a wonderful place to purchase inexpensive bridesmaid dresses (think $145) made out of beautiful shantung silk in a wide variety of colors and designs. I am looking at a sage green or royal blue cocktail length dress, with a pink sash, and a v-neck, for an upcoming friend's wedding. I was stressed about finding a wedding dress, when strolling along Atlantic Avenue I discovered Kimera, and it was love at first sight. Yvonne Chu is the owner/designer, and her work is incredible. She specializes in silk shantung/dupioni dresses with asian influences that are both gorgeous and significantly hipper than anything else out there. Most of the cuts are simple to show off the wearer and the stunning fabric, and she does custom fitting. (Did I mention that the dress made my butt look fabulous?) Towards wedding season things can get hectic so make sure to order early to give her enough time to make your dress. I learned about Kimera Design dresses when I attended a wedding in VT. All six bridesmaids wore different cuts of beautiful black dresses with pink sashes. A few months later I called in to place an order for a indigo blue spaghetti strap dress. It arrived pretty quickly and looked gorgeous. I did have to take it in a bit at the waist but the overall fit and feel of the shantung silk was amazing. That's one dress I'll be wearing quite frequently for more or less formal occasions. Kimera (well, really Yvonne, the designer) created a dress that was exactly what I wanted for my wedding. It was done exactly when it was promised, and with a personal touch - I asked Yvonne to incorporate pieces of my mother's wedding dress into the sash of my dress. She carefully selecting corresponding colors and textures for the sash, creating a beautiful, unique piece of art, that I was thrilled to wear at my wedding. Kimera is not for the traditional bride...you won't find taffeta, lots of lace, jewels, corsets and bustiers. But, what you will find is simple, carefully crafted, beautiful, shantung silk dresses with unique, creative, personal, touches. I was very happy with Yvonne's work. She finished my wedding dress in less than 3 months (although, not during normal wedding season!) and I loved it. Her style is simple and elegant with vintage and Asian elements, and the price for what I got was amazing. After I selected my dress and jacket, I also decided to buy jewelry from Kimera following Yvonne's recommendations, and I got my groom's tie to match my dress. I was so happy with those choices! I had to have a small additional alteration, which was done overnight for no charge. I had no idea what I was doing with my wedding dress yet and was just completely clueless, and Yvonne gave me a lot of ideas and guidance to come to decisions that I was very happy with. Kimera has pretty, simple Asian-inspired dresses perfect for cocktail parties, informal and formal events. I chose this designer for my wedding dress because the dress I had in mind (Asian -inspired, with clean lines) fit their asthetic. I went with a friend who works in the Garment District. She found the designs to be very basic, "Sewing 101." Initially, I was still browsing for dresses, so I had them take my measurements and told them I might call them back. Later on that summer, I moved across the country to California, and still hadn't found a dress. I ended up placing a long-distanceorder for a rush job on a dress plus a long and short sash about 2 months prior to my wedding (my fault for procrastinating). I had to have the dress altered in California. As it turns out, the simple design was a good choice, because I received it in plenty of time to have it fitted. The dress was lightweight, packed well and was perfect for the Hawaii weather. At the time of ordering, I asked that the dress be given a low-V back, and to raise the neckline to be a little more conservative. When I received the dress, it was very loose and the neckline too low (bra was visible when viewed from the side). Granted, I had been working out, and lost some weight, so that may have explained the loose fit on the sides and hips. However, the fit was all wrong in the bust, and I'm not sure if Yvonne forgot to raise the neckline, or if it was because of weight loss and wearing a different bra at the time measurements were taken. The tailor who ultimately did the fittings explained the darts were not fitted correctly in the bust, and there was no hook-and-eye closure at the top of the zipper. In any case, these problems were fixed. The dress turned out beautifully, and the wedding was a success. Overall, I was happy with the dress I bought from Kimera. However, if you plan on ordering from this designer, make sure you order at least 6 months in advance (as all the wedding magazines suggest), because I have a feeling things slipped through the cracks because of the short notice and increased demand during wedding season. read more

I found this shop on etsy and really liked their dresses (great colors & textures, very simple & elegant style). I needed a dress within a month (in winter) and although I live on the west coast it was no problem to have the dress made within this time frame. I guess it might be harder to do this during wedding season.... I emailed Yvonne my approx. measurements she sent me 2 sample dresses and many swatches. All she needed was to have a credit card on file. Luckily the sample dress which I liked best fit me really well. I ordered the dress in a different color and received it within 7 business days of the order! It was really crucial that Yvonne sent the swatches with the sample dresses - the colors come out very different on photographs. We bought dresses from here for my sister in-law's wedding and they were great! We had our initial appointment in July (wedding was in October). We were a little nervous we were cutting it close. But we chose the dresses we liked and picked out the colors which fit the color scheme of the wedding perfectly. Kimera Design was offering a free hair and makeup trial session sponsored by Under Her Veil. My gf, who is also a bride-to-be, and I decided to go and check it out and I have to say for a free trial session, we were treated and pampered with lots of attention. We walked in and was greeted by the friendliest staff. It was a team of 4 or 5 individuals and there was one professional photographer who was snapping pictures away. They really made us feel very comfortable. They even had cupcakes and goody bags for us. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, their makeup artists couldn't make it so they allocated more time on the hair trials. I showed a couple of pictures I saw from Pinterest to my hairstylist (sorry forgot her name!), and she was able to do it almost exactly as depicted in the pictures. More amazing is that she was able to do it all in less than 30 mins. It was a pleasure seeing her work her magic. After the hair trial, we also met the owner of Kimera Design, Yvonne, who is very sweet and friendly to talk to. She showed us some of the bridal hair accessories she sells and they were all really pretty. Since it's still early for me to think about hair accessories, I will definitely return in the near future for more browsing and inspirations. read more

I found Kimera in 2006 when I was looking for someone to make a wedding dress from scratch, on recommendation from a friend who lived in the neighborhood. My experience with Yvonne was pure magic. I'd purchased yards of creamy beaded raw silk fabric during a trip to India a few years earlier, and - hoorah! - it turned out that that's just what Yvonne specialized in. (I was with some other guy at the time and having wedding visions...that didn't work out, but the fabric followed me around until I met my now-husband!) Yvonne whipped up the dress of my dreams, complete with a sash using kimono fabric I ordered from Japan, and, to top it all off, the price was incredible. read more

I had my wedding dress made here, and it could not have come out better. I was not interested in a traditional dress - I wanted a 1950's-inspired dress, and it had to be green (my favorite color). A family friend's daughter had gotten her wedding dress made here and had been very happy, so my mother and I went to have a consultation with Yvonne. I do have to say that I was initially a little wary, as I am not a small woman, and the models on the website were all pretty slender, so I wasn't sure I would be able to be accommodated. However, once I got there, it was clear that all sizes were welcome. Yvonne and Susan worked with me to choose the right features for the dress, including sleeves with jeweled accents and a sash. I also had three ties made out of the same emerald green silk shantung that my dress was, for my fiance and our fathers. Susan (True Alchemy Bridal) also worked with me to make me a custom flower fascinator instead of a veil. I had many guests at the wedding coming up to me to tell me how much they loved my dress and the fascinator. I am extremely pleased with how everything turned out and I look forward to wearing the dress again for other special occasions. read more

I'll plan to update this review when the two dresses are finished, but I thought I'd share my experience so far with Kimera. I walked into the store with one wedding dress from her website in mind but ended up settling on a different dress when Yvonne and my BFF who came with and I agreed that another one worked better on me. She suggested alterations that I would not have thought of (and that won't cost me extra). The fabrics she uses are gorgeous, and she was very patient while I changed in and out of dresses, paraded around in front of the mirror, and asked to try on the different accessories she has lying around. The price is amazing for a custom-made dress! It's definitely going to be a memorable dress; no fluffy samey-samey cake dress (you know, those frilly dresses that look more like wedding cakes than dresses) for me! My mother also came here on a visit to get her dress, and that was a very enjoyable experience as well. She didn't really know what she wanted, so we looked at a lot of styles and colors. She ended up with a design that we're both very excited about. Again, price is awesome, and Yvonne is flexible with out-of-town clients. I guess this review covers mostly the experience of working with Yvonne, which I cannot recommend enough.
