Not the best selection of dresses, many a bit outdated. Didn't see any current popular bridal designers or perhaps just didn't pick them out from the 6 or 7 dresses I selected to try on or the few racks I browsed. The fitting "area" didn't have a mirror so note it's more challenging to closely inspect the dress on your own. Definitely overpriced for very limited selection, which lacked variety. Was surprised that samples were often only priced maybe $500 off the "original price" (questionable if the listed original prices were even accurate, seems inflated, so hardly any cost savings). Many of the dresses were barely more than 20% off, most lower. They do have a small selection (1 rack) of plus sized dresses, although I didn't look through them but something to consider if you fall into that size range. Most of the dress sizes in bridal sizes 8-12, which had several racks. Hastily purchased a gown that I do regret. Note their policy of final sale, no exchanges. They do not take walk ins, but I called day of and received a same day appointment. I guess if you're desperate for a last minute dress with not many options, this places fills a role as you may find something to settle on. Apparently they have independent tailors they work with in store who they claim can quickly do last minute alterations as well but I cannot speak to the quality of said work and I see reviews questioning the quality. I also noticed they handle sales tax in an unusual way, which others may want to be aware of. Hmmm, not sure what to say. Two stars, because there were a few dresses that were really nice. I can't tell you the consultants name, because she never introduced herself. The dress selection seemed old and over priced. The mirror is slanted from the wall and made me feel short. (Carnival mirrors) lol If you're a girl with some hips and at least a street size 10 and up don't waste your time. I kept picking dresses to only hear " that won't fit you" over and over. In a city like New York, where you have so many options that are dreamy but way far from your budget, this is a place to visit. Like many brides said, it is important that you have been through the whole dress shopping experience first and that you have an idea of what you want. To that, I would add to understand that, being a sample showroom, the range of sizes is very specific, but hey, you can have a Marchesa gown for a fraction of the price! Wonderful all around! I basically begged to be squeezed in for a last minute appointment since a couple other places kept saying I had a time crunch and they agreed to let me come in. My consultant Mindy was great, she pulled dresses for me quickly and she was able to just tell from looking at my body (no formal measurements) what would fit me. The first one I picked caught my eye and I tried it last and said YES to the dress. I was kind of torn between two and she encouraged the one I picked even though it was WAY CHEAPER and way below my budget. The other one I was considering was triple the price and needed serious alterations but she said this one was easy peasy, no alterations and a brand new sample. It was very clear that she was selling in my best interest and that made me and my mom happy. Esther came in towards the end of the appt as well and they were both so easy to work with and talk to. I went to 9 bridal salons in NYC, and this one stands out to me for having utmost customer service. Ivan was an absolute joy to work with. He gave me over 3 hours of his time, and I must have tried on over 30 gowns in his store. I fell in love with a Francesca Miranda, but didn't end up purchasing it because it didn't have the dramatic train I had envisioned. That being said I would highly recommend this salon to anyone looking for couture dresses at half the price. I will definitely go back here for mother-of-the bride and rehearsal dinner dresses. The Sample Room NY is pretty much what you'd expect: racks of dresses for you to wade through, sorted by style/silhouette, prices and sizes clearly marked. I would definitely recommend coming here only AFTER you've been through the "traditional" dress experience a few times. It was helpful for us to know the types of dresses the bride liked and didn't like, so there was less aimless browsing and trying on. As with any outlet or sample sale, you've got to have a combination of luck and imagination to find The One here. We did find one dress that was promising (required a decent amount of alterations). Much more "designer" than typical bridal boutiques that carry Enzoani, Maggie Sottero, etc. We did see one gorgeous Monique Lhullier with the $$$$ price to match, even marked down. I purchased a wedding dress from the Sample Room and the store manager, Ivan, highly recommended their seamstress, Martha, to do the alterations. Martha destroyed the dress to the point multiple other seamstresses said it was beyond repair. I was left without a dress less than 2 months before my wedding. Ivan refused to take any responsibility for this and he and Martha both have not returned my calls and emails. It was a horrendous experience that I would not wish upon any bride. Came to visit here and agreed with some other reviewers that this is probably my least favorite bridal store and I have been to quite a few. I made an appointment a week in advance and after i have confirmed that they have dresses in my price range. I got there and looked around the dresses and did not see anything that piqued my interest. I also saw that some of the dresses were dirty. All of the gowns I see were over $1.5k. I didn't end up trying anything on and the consultant just told me that they don't have anything that I am looking for in my budget. I was in and out in 10 min. I later went to Kleinfeld Sample Studio and had a better experience. All in all, if you are looking for a great off the rack dress, do yourself a favor and go to Glamour closet instead for more affordable and beautiful dresses. read more

I went to the Sample Room with high hopes after seeing 4.5 stars on Yelp. How they have 4.5 stars, I do not know! On a positive note, the staff is very sweet and friendly and the space is light and bright and nice. Sample Room is at max 20-30% discount off retail prices for dresses that are just terrible condition. I saw dresses that were ripped, stained, dirty, yellowed, sweated-in, had makeup stains on them, lipsticked, inked, missing buttons, had pulls in the lace, busted zippers, stretched seams, I could go on. NOT ONE dress I tried on didn't need a major repair or stain removal. It was really quite gross, actually. If you do want to give them a try, buyer beware: Factor in $350 for alterations and another $300-400 for cleaning. So take that "discounted" price and take on another 700 bucks and see how much of a deal you think it is. The wedding dress game is disheartening for anyone with solid values. $3000 for a dress you wear once is crazy. But $2200 for a ripped, stained version of that dress that you then have to alter and clean, well that is the definition of insanity. Oh, and as a warning: I wear a size 2 to 4 in regular clothes. I couldn't even zip up several of the dresses in there! Anyone bigger than a size 4, forget about it. read more

This is what the "director" responded with: "Thank you for reaching out to us regarding making an appointment. I noticed that your wedding date is set for Fall of 2016 and that you haven't been dress shopping for yourself yet. Please note that we recommend that our brides make us one of their last stops in the bridal gown hunt for several reasons. Firstly because we are not a traditional bridal store but a bridal showroom that sales samples directly off the floor we can't guarantee that any dress you find on your first visit will still be available upon your return. Also we recommend that you visit a few traditional bridal salon to narrow down the options of what's available to you and then come to us to find a great deal. " Thanks for telling me what I already know and assuming this would be my first stop (I have two appointments the morning before I wanted to see you). This is called The Sample Room, obviously a dress I find there wouldn't be available later on because its a SAMPLE ROOM. Found this location through yelp since it was near my job. I scheduled an appointment for a day I was off. I originally walked past the building because I was looking for a store front. FYI its a building and you have to go to the second floor. When you get out of the elevator, you go to the left and knock on the door in front of you. I was greeted warmly and was told to look around to find what I like. This is a sample store so the dresses and accessories are essentially one style in one size. Sometimes someone can get a huge savings at sample stores because the items are usually discontinued styles marked like 50% off. I had called and told them the sizes I was fitting in bridal dresses, which is bigger than your normal size. Unfortunately for me I only pulled like 4 dresses in size 10 or 12. Most of the dresses here were 2, 4, and 6 sigh. I didn't end up getting any dresses because I wasn't in love with the ones I did fit. If you wear 2,4,or 6 in bridal dresses then you should try this place as they do have nice dresses at decent price range depending what you want. read more

This is a fabulous little wedding salon, with designer sample dresses at huge markdowns. The dresses are all in pretty good condition. I visited here twice, as I love Jenny Packham dresses, and the Sample Room has masses of them. They have other great labels too like Oscar de la Renta, Jim Hjelm, Badgley Mischka etc. The only caveat is they do not have current season gowns as they are not allowed to sell current seasons. Also you buy off the rack here (so full price upfront) and you need to be prepared to do your own alterations with a separate store/seamstress. The staff is super friendly and helpful. read more

It's a great space with beautiful, fashion forward dresses. The staff was fairly helpful, but now I know why they weren't giving the service I was used to at other bridal salons like Lovely Bride. If you aren't super skinny there aren't many dresses that will fit you there. I am not plus-sized, medium but with hips and there weren't many choices for me. Also, I ran into the owner when I was coming into the building behind her (I didn't know it was the owner) because when I told her I was going to the store, she just shrugged and didn't engage with me in the elevator. I didn't even know she potentially worked there until we got off on the same floor and she used her key to get into the showroom. Another woman told me she was the owner! I will recommend my slim friends to the place because the dresses are gorgeous! But it would be nice if they said on the site that most dresses are for the petite. read more

As a sample sale shopper who loves quality but not the cost of it, this place was a must. I have been to the full array of gown stores, super high end giant shops and SoHo boutiques. I do warn you though -- the quality and beauty of these dresses, the lace and beadwork - has totally ruined me for budget dresses. The place was as expected, the woman who helped me very nice and knowledgeable, she knew what I was looking for, as a street size 8-10 there were plenty of dresses for me to try, yes, half of them are smaller (6 or below) but that is to be expected. The salesperson, Mindy, was knowledgeable about what alteration could and could not be done and honest about what the cost of them would be. She also gave me the info so I could call and make sure it was here if I wanted to try it again and that they would pull it from the floor if I called and said I wanted it. I was eager to see the Jenny Packham dresses in person as I have lusted over them online. I am really glad to have seen them, none of the ones there, and there were quite a few, really blew me away and certainly did not justify the price point. One dress that I really like, a Jim Hjelm, was amazing, I mean really amazing. I do not want to spend a ton of cash on a dress (after 4 years of being engaged I have other priorities) but the lace on this dress had me rethinking everything. It was gorgeous. Blew away any of the other dresses I had seen, as I was not looked at $5,000 dresses before. It totally ruined me for any other less expensive lace dresses. Full gown of french lace for 1/2 price. I don't think I am going to get it though because I am nervous about the alterations it would require (it is 1/2 a size too small) If you need a designer gown but don't have or want to drop 5k this place is a definite. read more

I came to the sample room as my last stop on the bridal tour, as recommended. Looking for a short, unique dress at a price that would leave me plenty left over for some great shoes and accessories. I was really surprised at the huge selection of short dresses, many more than I'd seen at the bigger bridal boutiques. I found a great dress, at a great price. Though what really stood out about the sample room was the way I was helped. I went to plenty of small bridal shops that gave customers close attention, but this was the first time I felt like a salesperson actually listened to what I was looking for. I don't think that your dress is the "be all end all of your wedding day", there's much more important things like family (and booze & cake of course!). Probably my least favorite bridal store I went to. I came here because I saw lots of reviews saying that there were smaller size samples available. Looking back, most of these reviews are over a year old. I was disappointed to very few smaller sized dresses in the store save for a few Romona Keveza dresses priced at $7k or similar. I called because I was in the neighborhood and the gentleman on the phone took all my info over the phone (budget, name, wedding date, etc). When I went to the store 20 minutes later they had "lost" my info and made me fill it all out again. There is no "changing room" here, just a partition and a small common space. Emphasis on small - it was me and three others squeezed back there, dresses all one on top of the other. My consultant was polite but not very warm (if that makes sense) and the whole thing felt like a stern business transaction. She didn't even acknowledge my mother-in-law when we came in which was also rude. Also - pictures are not allowed which is one of the primary reasons I didn't return here to buy my dress - I legitimately couldn't remember exactly what it looked like. At any rate they only had one dress I remotely liked and it was a few sizes too large. Eh. Maybe it was just my consultant but I didn't get a warm, friendly vibe from the entire operation. I'm not expecting the Kleinfeld's experience with champagne and other frou-frou stuff since I'm shopping two months ahead of my wedding and at sample sale stores, but some genuine warmth and kindness might help. Not my favorite place and not somewhere I'd recommend to other brides. read more

The Sample Room has a wide selection of dresses and designers. They have just about every style when it comes to classy wedding dresses. The entire place was bright and clean. Just perfect. Their staff were super helpful. They made great suggestions and were very patient. I tried on about 15 dresses and narrowed it down to 4 and finally picked the ONE. It's a strapless satin ivory dress made by Lazaro. It was in excellent condition. I only had to go for one minor alteration. Simple. Overall I had a fantastic experience. Based on the number of yelp reviews, this salon seems to be a well kept secret in NY. It's a great little salon with a nice space and tons of dresses at big markdowns. There are no dressing rooms; you stand behind a little wall thing and a woman will help you in and out of the dresses you try on. There's some famous designers and some you've maybe not heard of--Ugo Zaldi anyone? Apparently the owner does a lot of wholesaling for european designers who are not as strong in the US market. I almost bought a dress from here. I came back a few days later to try it on again. They stayed a little bit late for me, too, to get there from work. I hemmed and hawed, and they were cool and patient with me. I decided not to buy it quite yet, and asked them to call me if anyone seemed like they might buy the dress. I felt bad, but they were very nice and flexible, and I got absolutely zero attitude. Thanks!! I ended up going a different route, but think all brides should check out the selection here! read more

This shop is an excellent option for brides who want a designer gown at a discount. The staff was incredibly helpful and patient. I went on a weekday and therefore received a lot of personal attention because the shop was not very busy. Their inventory seems to change a lot throughout the year, so this might be a good place for someone who has a lot of time to invest in finding the perfect dress. When I went, they did not have a lot of selection in what I was looking for (lace dress). While I did try on some beautiful dresses, since they are samples that only come in one size, each dress needed some sort of alteration that made me anxious about how the final version would look. Ultimately, I decided to buy a budget new dress at RK Bridal as opposed to buying a designer sample dress at The Sample Room. Having visited quite a few other bridal boutiques in the city, (Wedding Atelier, Birnbaum & Bullock, etc.), I feel that I can honestly say that The Sample Room was the not only the best value, they were also some of the most knowledgeable and helpful people I worked with. It all depends on your luck whether you'll find your dress here (of course, that could be said for any place...), and prices run from 500 - 4K (an enormous poofy designer dress). I wear a size 6/8 and there were plenty of dresses that fit me and many larger or smaller than my size. Nobody rushed me and I appreciate that they were as courteous and welcoming the second time as they were the first. Bottom line, highly recc'd read more

I came here as my last stop and bought a dress! It was much too big, and it was only a couple hundred dollars off the ticket price, but it was in pristine condition and very easy to tailor...so I'm pretty happy with how it worked out. They charged $50 to ship it and were VERY flexible - I had some back-and-forth about the shipping date and they couldn't have been more gracious about it. They had a wider selection than I thought they would. I think this sort of place is just inevitably going to come down to the luck of the draw - you either find a dress you love there, or you don't. Or you do, but it's the wrong size and can't be altered, etc. I worked mostly with Yolanda, who was great! She really helped me make up my mind, especially if I didn't like something and was just trying to "talk myself into it". I recommend her wholeheartedly. I bought my wedding dress from The Sample Room NY and I cannot recommend them enough!!! The showroom was beautiful and they had a great selection of styles in my price range. Everyone was so helpful and sweet and I just had a great experience here. The very first dress I tried on was THE ONE, and at first when it was on the hanger I wasn't sure, but I put it on and it was perfect!! Also, I had it altered with a seamstress they have a relationship with to turn the full-length gown into a tea-length, and she did a fantastic job. Since no other reviews have mentioned it - this place has beautiful high end dresses for great prices, but they basically only go up to a size 10. Samples= mostly runway samples. I knew this going in so it was fine and did try on a few gorgeous dresses that fit. The quality of the dresses was great, aside from a small number of samples with damage. But the fabric, workmanship, and design was all top notch - and you can't beat the prices (mostly in the $1000-2500 range for dresses that all retail for $3K-5K+). I would recommend this for a petite or slim fashion forward bride. If you like Jenny Packham they have a great selection of her past season designs. Also the salon is very private and elegant, the only complaint I have is there is no dressing room, just a screen you change behind, and during my appointment there was another girl there trying things on and we had to kind of trade shifts in the dressing room which was slightly awkward. read more

After having gone to a couple of other bridal salons I realized getting a dress in less that four months is VERY difficult. So I decided I would go to places with sample dresses and this place was perfect! I made an appointment for a Saturday afternoon and the girl that helped me wasn't pushy at all and just let me decide for myself if I liked it before she gave her opinion. Some sales people just talk and talk and talk and can't even think you just take the dress off so they stop talking. So I tried on several that definitely weren't perfect but weren't horrible. I ended up trying on a Francesca Miranda that I absolutely fell in love with. It was brand new and was 50% off the ticket price. Not a stain, and rip anywhere. I left the appointment without it and went to three other salons basically searching for the same dress. I called at the end of the day to see if they still had it and they said they were closed but I could stop by anyway. They let me try on the dress again and I bought it on the spot. They shipped it to NH tax free and I had the alterations done locally for a fair price. I would definitely recommend this salon to brides that are 'sample size,' want their dress fast, want laid back sales people and are looking for designer dresses with a discount. Note: Definitely come to the appointment with a good fitting strapless bra and some spanx because there aren't individual dressing rooms. read more

LOVE. This is where I found my wedding dress! People say you try "The one" on and you have that moment, it's really true- and I'm so not the type. I found a couple I liked and tried them on, I was looking for something different and sort of specific. The lovely young woman who helped me was so sweet, and suggested other gowns for me. They received a shipment while I was there and she said she would open up the box and see if anything came in. Well I'm SO GLAD she did because thats where my wedding dress was! Arrived in a box just for me =] I put it on and all the employees came over to check it out and accessorized me and were so nice... I was like, holy crap this is it! I kept it on for a while and called my mom and sister... they didn't mind and were very accommodating. I said Yes to that damn dress and I'm so happy I did. There is no hold policy or anything so it definitely puts the pressure on, but its a smaller store if I were them I wouldn't want to allow holds either.... well maybe at least until the end of the day. The dress I picked is gorgeous- and I forgot the designer's name and sent an e-mail when I got home, they responded to me right away with the designer & style name, and also wrote a nice message and that the dress was "meant for me" hee. It's just so nice. They understand how special it is. The best thing about this place is that it's not one of those gigantic wedding dress outlets with a ton of dresses and the same amount of brides running around. It's very intimate and enjoyable- and you'll find lots of different dresses that aren't so cookie cutter like at David's Bridal or something. I bought a wedding dress this past weekend at The Sample Room. This was my first time shopping for a dress since my engagement. I am getting married in the Caribbean in July so I was anxious to find my dress. My experience overall was good. It was a little crowded on Saturday which is why making an appointment is a necessity (I think they require appointments). Mindy assisted me with my dress search. I was a bit disappointed by the selection but nevertheless there were still a large selection of all different types of dresses and pricing. There is a no return policy at this store so if you are not 100% happy with your dress DO NOT BUY. I will be honest. I was not 100% about my dress and I made the decision to buy. This was my mistake and I take responsibility. When I brought the dress home I was so upset after closely examining the dress that it was very dirty and tattered on the bottom. There is no question that this dress had probably been tried on by hundreds of brides and not cared for properly. Sale or NOT a dress should not be in this condition. The fitting area was so tiny you could barely get in and out of your dress without bumping into someone. Definitely not a good set up for paying attention to details such as condition of bottom of dress. I had buyer's remorse hours after my purchase and did try emailing the Sample Room asking if they would consider my return or exchange but I did not hear back. Since it was literally 24-48 hours after I made my purchase, I figured I may have some luck but I did not. The purpose of my review is to reinforce to all brides that dress shopping at the Sample Room is a unique experience. Be prepared to be a bit overwhelmed with the dress racks, literally no room for changing, crowded area in store once you have your dress on and again, absolutely no returns. This was a very expensive hard lesson and hopefully I can sell my Blue Enzoani size 10 dress to a future bride that will love the dress. read more

They are all samples and there is only one of each dress. So it's a hit or a miss, however they always have new selections. I ended up buying my dress from Angel Sanchez, but I was very close to picking the selections at the Sample Room. I would recommend to all bridess!! I read the poor reviews and it's fair enough; the Sample Room may not be for everyone, but I'm thrilled by the entire experience. The dresses are generally organized by style, not size. As with any sample dress shopping, some of the dresses are in better condition than others, and some won't be in the right size - that's sample dress shopping. I had gone to 7 or so other salons before coming to the Sample Room. However, the Sample Room had a great wide selection and didn't seem to have any cookie cutter types of gowns (there's always something interesting, even the dresses that weren't what I was looking for), all the staff was attentive and easy to worth with, and there was no pressure or attitude. The space is lovely with lots of natural light and open as well. The price range is wide, though most seemed to be around the $2K range. The discount seems reasonable as well; I ended up getting 55% off of the original retail price for a dress that looks as if no one has ever touched it with a fabulous uncompromising design. read more

This place was fantastic! I made an appointment for the Bride via email (super easy) They got back to me within an hour I think to confirm! I had to ask if it was ok to bring extra girls and they happily accommodated us. I didn't know what to expect at first because it looks like your going into an apartment building, but once you go in its soooooo pretty inside. There were 2 people available to help the bride and they even let her guests look around and select some dresses. They were attentive, helpful and friendly without pressuring or rushing the bride. The five of us happily waited to see each dress the bride tried on, while relaxing on a comfy couch and took lots of pictures. Ultimately this was our first place for wedding dresses so she did not make a final decision yet, but the experience was perfection! Great selection of styles and dresses with some unique designers. I was pleased to find some larger sizes but they did not have much by way of plus sizes. I had a great experience at the Sample Room this past weekend. I set up an appointment several weeks ago, and came with my mother and her friend. The space is set up very nicely, with many mirrors, comfortable chairs, and good lighting. The selection is great, in fact a bit overwhelming, so I recommend you decide on budget and the kind of dress you like beforehand.
