I came into the store 2.5 weeks before my wedding and wanted to get an emerald cut eternity band that's roughly 0.2 carat per stone. Soloman was very friendly, he has the exact ring I'm looking for, but the ring size is too big. Solomon is a very honest salesman. He understands that 0.3 carat per stone would look took big on my finger and that it wouldn't stack too well. So he didn't even try to up sell me. Another sales rep actually pulled out a 0.5 carat per stone eternity band, but Solomon told her it's not going to look good with the look I'm going for. Solomon explained that he will be making a brand new one for me if I were to decide on getting the wedding band from him. The stone settings on an eternity ring band is hard to alter, the best way is the make a brand new one. The size has to be perfect, if not you will feel uncomfortable with a close grip. Since my fiancé, now husband, is busy building his business empire and doesn't have time to compare prices. I went to my other jeweler in NJ to compare the prices Solomon gave me. My NJ jeweler was 30% cheaper, but he couldn't deliver in 2 weeks. I went back to Solomon, told him I need his absolute best offer, gave him the quotes I got from my NJ jeweler, and Solomon was able to come close to the amount I'm asking for. It was slightly higher than my NJ jeweler, but Solomon was able to make a brand new ring in a week, and the clarity is slightly higher. I received my ring the day before my wedding and everything was perfect. It came in a really nice box too. Solomon is an honest man. He was really nice and offered to polish and clean my engagement ring and other jewelry I was wearing that day. I would highly recommend going back to Solomon, just don't take his first offer that seriously. Unless he's going to change his sales strategy after reading this review :) But in general, if you're shopping for diamonds in Diamond District, I would highly recommend comparing prices before committing to the sales. From blah to ooh la la :) My husband and I were looking to get my engagement ring reset, and had a very specific design in mind. We feel so fortunate to have found Michael F & Co, as they did a spectacular job! Honestly, we wish we had started here with our original ring. The quality of their craftsmanship is far superior to anything we've had made before. So if you've found them now, consider yourself in good hands! To give a little more detail, we went to our original jeweler in Los Angeles- someone who builds for the top jewelers there- and who originally built our engagement ring & two bands (this was 10 years ago). When we approached him to reset our ring, we were told it would be about 2 weeks once we finalized the design. Well, 2 weeks turned into... wait for it... 8 months. They could never provide us with a finalized design, nor would they respond to emails, phone calls, or texts. So, to put it mildly, we certainly had trust issues bringing our asscher cut stone and rings to any other jeweler. But Elina at Michael F & Co was very understanding, clear, and able to bring her expertise in addressing what we wanted, the stone we already had, and combining them into an updated antique-looking masterpiece. Emphasis on perfection here. The process was incredibly smooth and streamlined. Elina was very communicative about what we could actually achieve with the ring in comparison to our source images. Every adjustment was addressed, and the build of this ring is unlike any other. As promised, it was 10 days from signing off on the design to ring in hand. And let me tell you- this ring is STUNNING. It sparkles like nothing we have ever seen. The attention to detail and specificity of craftsmanship far exceeded our expectations. Not only did they rebuild our ring, they also cleaned up my husband's wedding ring. Bling, glorious bling! My gooooooorgeous engagement ring comes from Michael F & Co, a gem (no pun intended) amongst the retailers of NYC's infamous Diamond District. After going to look at a few different jewelers in Manhattan (from Kay to Tiffany's, to get the whole spectrum), my fiance, Luke, headed to the diamond district on the recommendation of my parents (my mom's favorite destination in the Big Apple) and my brother, who got his wife's engagement ring here - but from a different retailer. My guy, a savvy shopper, went to several different jewelers, perusing the goods and getting a sense for the treatment of clients before settling on Michael F. Many diamond retailers on 47th street are just hawking their wares, and come across as being a little, shall we say, cheezy and chintzy and greedy? Amongst retailers in the diamond district, one can easily get the feeling that the guys who work here are just looking to make a sale and pad their pockets. Not the case with this extremely classy and professional place. Luke and I couldn't be happier with the ring and the services received. With Michael and his staff, everything is centered on making lasting relationships with clients and truly making them happy. Even when months went by between my fiance's visits, Michael always remembered him by name. "Ah, Luke! How are you and how is your lady?" Big points for the personal touch. When Luke took me here in the late spring to get an idea of what I liked, Michael gave us the red-carpet treatment, and talked to us beyond just what we wanted in a ring. Unlike many girls, I was not overly picky in what I wanted besides wanting a round cut and platinum band. Michael was able to read my mind beyond what I even knew and created the most perfect ring for me. A few weeks before proposing, Luke decided the ring needed something a little extra, so he had it shipped back to Michael to have some inside engraving done. Michael rushed the job and got it done - for FREE - in time for a surprise Central Park proposal. Did I mention that Michael gave my fiance an incredible deal, too?! When Luke and I came in yesterday to check out wedding bands and get the ring re-sized (it was half a size bigger than I thought I needed - don't want those diamonds going anywhere!), Michael warmly greeted us, congratulated us, and immediately asked to see the ring to clean it. He then walked us through the process of what to do to get the ring re-sized: one of his employees took us down to one of his jeweler friends down the block who sized it down while we waited, about 20 minutes), and then onto another associate who polished it, while we waited. Again, this was all FREE OF CHARGE. Oh, and the re-sizing is completely unnoticeable to the eye- no one would ever be able to tell it had been sawed and heated down a 1/2 size. When we went back to Michael, he steam cleaned it AGAIN! Shiny, shiny, shiny. We are getting married in July, so Michael told us to hold off a while for buying wedding bands, but was happy to show us some of his samples. I recently purchased our diamond engagement ring from Michael and his daughter Elina. We already had some ideas ahead of time about the cuts and settings we were interested in through online stores, but we wanted to see them in person to make our decision. Michael F & Co came highly recommended from a friend so we gave them a call and they were able to prepare stones and settings for us to view that same day. With their help expert guidance we were able to narrow the search down to the exact stone and setting we wanted in only three visits. Elina worked extra hard to get multiple stones extremely similar to what I had found online, and we were able to see them in person and compare variations in depth, table, and the four C's for our princess cut and pick one that had the right aesthetics for our tastes. The one we ended up picking was something that Elina had hand picked as being exceptional for the price range we were looking at, and closely matching our specifications. After picking out the ring, Michael and his associates were able to get it set, engraved and shipped in a remarkably short time frame. The whole process took less than two weeks. There was some time pressure on the ring, and they surely delivered. I was expecting and willing to pay a premium for the level of in-store service they provided compared to the popular online retailers, but the prices were surprisingly competitive. I see no reason to choose a online retailer over Michael F. They were very professional and easy to work with through the whole process. They also provide great post sale support. The somewhat top heavy ring tended to rotate my finance's finger due to her finger shape. They were able to get her sorted with fitment beads the same day she brought it in. I walked the streets of the diamond district for 8 days before I was ready to make a purchase. For those 8 days I interviewd nearly every character and creatin in the district.. for what I was about to spend, I wanted to be sure I trusted who I was buying from. Most places tried to sell me things.... But here at Michaels, they actually listened to what I wanted.. and showed me what I was asking for.. No one tried to sell me anything. My Girl had her heart set on CUT.. not Size.. not Clarity.. not Color.. Every shoppe altered the sales pitch to highlight what they wanted me to buy... and downplayed the importance of a XXX Cut stone.. telling me to sacrifice... on cut and get higher clarity or more carats... I was not pressured here.. while I was slow, time consuming and difficult in my process... I was given the time and space as well as all the attention I needed. This is a tough purchase.... as a novice in the gem world waliking into the shark tank that is the diamond district you need to be mindful of what you are getting from whom. "Um, do not go here". This is what the girl behind the counter told me and my boyfriend. Interesting sales pitch. After reading yelper reviews, we made a visit. The girl behind the counter immediately started to sell us diamonds. Great! That's what we were looking at. I'm not going to mention how much I paid, but I did walk out with a GIA graded diamond, (not going to mention carat), F color, VS2 clarity, Excellent Cut, Girdle being medium to slightly thick, cutlet:none, Excellent polish, Very good symmetry and no fluorescence. All the angle, depth and sizes were premium ideal. If you're walking out of a retail business telling yourself, thank God I didn't purchase the items online, then you know you got a heck of a deal. (When I first read these long reviews on yelp for Michael F. & Co., I was like, 'Are these real? I mean, who they heck spends time writing so much about buying an engagement ring?' Of course, now I get it. These jewelers deserve another good review.) The people of Michael F. and Co. are superb. You'll get the most for your money with courtesy and respect. I was helped mostly by Benjamin Davidov, but everyone I interacted with was professional. Benjamin helped me design a classic yet unique engagement ring that is absolutely exquisite. My fiancee was thrilled beyond my expectations when she saw the ring. It's not just beautiful but it is also top, top quality, GIA certified diamond with a strong 14k gold band. They have many beautiful rings on display, but I sort of had a specific classic design in mind - they can customize too. So the important thing for me was the rock. I needed a great diamond and Benjamin helped me find one with patience and insight. First of all, The Diamond District (47th St. between 5th and 6th) is nuts and overwhelming. There are so many stores and jewelers, so I used yelp to find a few spots with good reviews, Michael F. & Co. being one of them. After going to those places I was more comfortable with the block so I ended up going almost everywhere. I found the good quality stores are closer to 5th avenue, where you can find the better cuts of GIA certified diamonds. Even if you can't tell the difference - I sure can't - you want it on paper that you have a quality diamond. So then the question was, who do I want to work with? As in, who's just wants to make a sale and who wants to actually help me get the most for my money. After a lot of time spent around these places, it was very clear Michael F. & Co. were the best people, quality and price on the block. Benjamin was very respectful about my budget, and when it changed to be a little higher he did not push hard in that direction. Benjamin showed me so many beautiful diamonds - some below budget, some above, and some just right. When it came down to 3 diamonds, he took them away for a minute then showed them to me again, asking which one I liked the most. I didn't pick the most expensive, but he still agreed that it was the one. When I second-guessed myself and said, "You know, I should just get the most expensive one anyway," he literally said, "But why, you like that one." He could have made few hundred dollars more, but he convinced me to stay with the one I actually liked the most. "Don't worry, this diamond is stunning." He also assured me that if my fiancee didn't like something about the ring to come back and he would help take care of it. But of course, there were no problems. I'll be back there with my fiancee to find our wedding bands. If you have actually read my review this far, then I know that scary place you're in right now. I worked with Gem, ironic name, who was fantastic in helping me select the perfect ring and diamond for my now fiancé. I had done my research on various places and went to sit down and look at various settings and diamonds so I had a feeling for what I was looking for. Gem was super knowledgeable in showing me many types of diamonds, colors, carats, clarity and explaining differences in each. When it came time to select a diamond, he and the rest of the sales staff were just as excited as I was. I could tell that they all have a passion for what they do, and they really do stand behind their work. He told me it would be about 7-10 days for everything to be ready, but to my surprise, 5 days later it was ready! They provided me with all of the paperwork needed for insurance and for my records. They also give a free sizing (which we needed up needing ) He personally walked us over to the jeweler and we were able to watch the resizing take place which was very interesting. Gem reviewed the finalized ring after all adjustments had been complete to ensure it was up to his standards. Looking for an engagement ring is a really daunting task for any guy. In the city, it can be even more intimidating due to the vast number of jewelers out there plus the worry that you could be getting scammed out of a large amount of money at any moment. To be honest I had the benefit of having 7 close friends buy engagement rings over the last year. Thus, I literally could ride their hard work to get educated about diamonds and to narrow down my search for a trustworthy jeweler that offered the best price. That's it, really nothing else to say. Each friend recommended me to their own jeweler. All of them said their respective person was the best price they had found during their search. My officemate used Michael F & Co and he DEFINITELY got the best deal. My officemate also was referred to Michael F & Co. through a MBA business school friend. Apparently that referral chain is 8 people deep from his school friends. You would imagine that if there were any complaints, we would have heard about it by now considering he graduated MBA school almost 3 years ago. I went in to visit Michael and he presented me with a number of options after I spoke to him on the phone beforehand. I told him what cut of a ring I was looking for, what my price range was and what type of band I was looking for. BTW, even if you don't know those things at this point, he has no problem educating you. When we were looking at the different stones, he was VERY helpful in further teaching me about size, cut, clarity, etc.. For instance, he showed me various colors against a white sheet of paper, so I could tell how different a G versus an F was for instance. He showed me different carats side by side, so I could truly see what the different was between a 2 and a 3 carat ,for instance. He taught me about the ideal cut ratios you need for a round brilliant stone (the one I was looking for). Michael works off of referrals and, thus, makes it a point to provide the best quality diamonds at the best prices. Additionally, his entire business model goes to crap if someone feels like they were duped and stops the referrral chain. ... there is a reason why I am his 9th referral in a row and will gladly point him to referrals 10, 11, 12 and so on. After looking up the diamond district I decided to visit a few of the top rated ones. Michael's was my first stop. The first sales associate with whom I worked with (girl blonde hair) was very knowledgeable. She showed me a lot ring options before I said how much I wanted to spend. She spent about half hour with me and gave me a piece of paper with notes about all the rings. Which helped me compare at my next few stops . During this second visit to the store Michael was there. I spoke with him personally about costs and how much I wanted to spend.. During that time of him showing me ring options I never once felt like he was giving me his sales pitch.. Another girl (with black hair) was assisting Michael and tried on and modeled every option. She was great as well. The store really made me feel that they genuinely valued my business. I left and I took Michael's price to 3 other stores. I went home to sleep on it. The next day I went back at Michael's store. I started to consider a diamond a little bigger than the one we originally discussed (same cut, color and clarity). Do you know what Michael said? He said the cheaper ring was perfectly fine and I shouldn't feel like I have to increase the size (and price)! Imagine a diamond dealer recommending a cheaper option--Amazing! ( I ended up going with the bigger one though!) In the last moments before my purchase I was staring at the diamond and Michael said, "take it outside and you'll see how the sun hits it." Now I know there was a camera outside but just hearing something like that from and being trusted meant something to me-especially in the middle of the diamond district! After viewing the ring in the sunlight I returned inside the store, finalized my purchase, and felt great about it. Everything I wanted for my purchase I found at Michael's. - HONEST - TRUTH WORTHY - BEAUTIFUL SELECTION - FAIR - EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE - FRIENDLY Again I think the most valuable aspect of shopping at Michael's is that you will not feel pressured and like you are getting sold which is rare when diamond shopping At Michael's I felt like they weren't just trying get my money and sell me a diamond.The two sales associates and Michael were interested in making me a customer for life. I have to say that the 5 star reviews on Yelp was what made me go and check out Michael F's store. I was actually very reluctant to go to any of the midtown diamond district stores as I always see people hawking jewelry on the streets there and figured they were all rip offs. But Michael proved me very wrong. He was very soft spoke, knowledgeable, and not at all pushy in any way. He suggested a superb diamond and it was exactly what I wanted and he gave me a wonderful price. Even after the diamond prices went up, he still honored the original price he gave me 2 weeks ago just to keep my business. That to me is how a good business is run. This is a review for an engagement ring bought in February of this year. I can honestly say my fiancé is incredibly happy wearing it. We spent about 6 weeks looking for a ring in the diamond district, as well as looking at Cartier and Tiffany. At first, we worked with several jewelers in the area to try and find the best deal. We landed with Michael. My fiancé was a little anxious about the how the finished setting she wanted would turn out (a delicate 5 stone setting). That said, Michael proved to be the most knowledgeable about executing the setting, with some jewelers trying to talk us into an "easier" design. We also wanted the best price, and after researching on various diamond websites and having worked with other dealers previously, we knew Michael would give us the best price on the stone and setting without sacrificing quality. Once we made the decision to go with Michael, he created the ring from scratch in roughly two weeks, which involved him pulling various stones from different inventories, us looking at the diamond several times, Michael sending pictures of what the diamond and setting would look like, and re-sizing the ring. Michael made sure we were comfortable and happy during the entire process. Needless to say, my fiancé was probably one of Michael's more difficult / annoying customers :), but Michael understood how important it was to her. My husband met Michael about 10 years ago when shopping for my engagement ring. He had met with a few different jewelers but Michael came via referral and he was quite impressed with him. The ring turned out beautiful and I love it. We went on to buy wedding rings from him as well which are very nice. We have not had too many jewelry needs over the years, however any time we have gone by over the years for an adjustment, or for any reason, he has always been very gracious and helpful. He always remembers us well, and offers up a cleaning right away which really makes the rings sparkle. A few weeks ago we went to Michael with a one off request. We wanted to get my mother in law a special type of custom made bracelet. It apparently was not something that a lot of of people sold. It wasn't in the realm of diamonds either, which is really his specialty. Michael was very straightforward to let us know his thoughts on what we wanted, and to let us know various options. It probably wasn't a particular lucrative project for him, as this was not an expensive piece of jewelry. Michael however took full ownership to help get us what we need, and coordinated with the right vendors on his street. We quickly found exactly what we were looking for. He handled all the customization, delivered the piece timely, and came in on the low end of our budget. Its really nice and most importantly my mother in law loves it. Michael definitely gets the big picture in terms of understanding how to treat his clients, and knowing that its a long term relationship. Thank You Michael F & Company! I recently bought an engagement ring here and this place couldn't have been better. Michael, Gene, and the entire staff were so helpful and made what I thought would be a very difficult task easier than I could have ever imagined. I had actually gone to a few other jewlers in the Diamond District and all I got was the sleazy salesman vibe and did not feel comfortable dishing out my hard earned money to them. If I'm going to make a purchase like this I wanted to be 100% certain. So after striking out a few times I actually came onto Yelp and just typed in engagement rings and after reading the reviews of this place I had to check them out. I scheduled an appointment with Gene on a Saturday and got caught up that morning and showed up an hour late to the appointment. Expecting them to be annoyed for me being so late they couldn't have been nicer about it and told me not to worry about it. They showed me the diamonds we had talked about over the phone and I ended up going in the following Tuesday to pick out a setting and the whole nine yards. I worked mostly with Michael in picking out the stone and the setting and I have to say the best compliment I can give him is he was not pushy at all and did not try to force his ideas on me. He gave his opinion but it never came across as this is how you should do it, more along the lines of this is how i've seen it done but we can always do it another way for you. His patience and advice were much appreciated after my previous two expereinces where I felt i was being rushed out and hurried into makeing a decision. Now back to the ring. After picking out the stone and setting i wanted i was very confident my soon to be fiance (Amanda) would like it but you never know and I of course was a bit nervous about how the ring would come out. They were able to make the ring in less than a week and even held it a couple days longer for me without a problem. Going into pick up the ring I had my fingers crossed about it turning out the way I had hoped. It came out better than I could have ever imagined. I actually did a double take when I saw the ring and knew immediately Amanda would flip out when she saw it. Fast forward to the night of the proposal and I couldn't be happier. As soon as she saw the ring her face lit up like a christmas tree. I propsed along the Hudson River, just north of Battery Park around 9 pm at night, and the ring looked magnificent in the moonlight. I don't think she took her eyes off of it the entire night. And to finish, just in case people were curious I went with a Fancy Light yellow diamond In a halo seeting of tiny white diamonds. Everyone that she shows it to has the same reaction. They are completely blown away with how beautiful the ring is.
