TL;DR Royal Jewel Setting created a gorgeous engagement ring that combined heirlooms and more recent sentimental pieces in a custom design. They have earned all my and my fiancée's future custom jewelry work in New York, and I highly recommend them for your custom work. The work Royal Jewel Setting did and the finished ring exceeded our previous expectations for what could be done with her heirloom jewelry. The heirlooms used were a 1920s Art Deco etched band without a setting and a diamond from another ring--a Depression-era engagement ring and 50th anniversary ring both from my fiancées great-grandmother. Royal split and sized down the band, weaving the etching into the new trellis setting. Additionally, they faithfully recreated the etching on the other (originally un-etched) side of the band, with such care and detail that we cannot tell which is the original etching even with comparison photos. The flanking stones were studs I had given my fiancée years ago--the first diamonds I ever gave her, now integrated into her engagement ring. The setting was beautifully designed and artistically executed. The stone heights are balanced in a way that draws the eye to the center diamond, while maintaining a relatively low profile on her finger. Other considerations Royal made were obscuring an inclusion in the center diamond with a prong and sizing the band to a quarter size. The in-person conversations, mockups, and emails provided throughout the design process were helpful and encouraged our trust with Royal's handling of our sentimental pieces. The quoted price was fair and affordable, especially for the artistry present in the finished piece. Looking for the right person for this job can be a harrowing experience, as your essentially entrusting someone with a pretty valuable and sentimental piece of your life. Hachik and his staff set me and my fiance completely at ease, and I would highly recommend him for these services. First, he examined my ring and walked me through the process in a very upfront and professional manner. He answered all of my questions and gave me 100% of his attention. We were unsure whether to get the ring sized first or appraised, and he was actually able to do both for us, for which he provided us with a very fair price up front. While I was a little nervous to leave my new ring with him, I left there feeling confidant in his services. The ring was ready in two days but we were unable to leave work to pick it up before he closed for the day, so we came in first thing on a Monday morning, where his nephew helped us. Since I found Hachik and Royal Jewel Setting via Yelp and entrusted them with my wedding band based on their reputation here, I think it's appropriate for me to share my outcome. Summary: Hachik seems like a capable guy, if you give him repairs that he's suited to, but he won't necessarily tell you when he doesn't have the right skills or tools. If you aren't sure that you want him to do the work, hold on to the jewelry--he can't be trusted to wait for your OK before proceeding. My wedding ring had broken in two along a seam between two metals and had also become loose, so I was looking to have the break repaired and also to have the ring resized. I brought it in, and in discussing the resizing, was told that Hachik would have to cut the ring and solder it back together, but he was unsure if he could get the right color solder to match. At that time, I told him to look into it and only to do the repair after speaking with me--that I know I'm going to be picky, both because of my personal nature and because it's my wedding ring. When next I spoke with him, he had already done the work. When I went in, he had, in fact, cut & resoldered the ring with a solder that didn't match, leaving a visible seam. Furthermore, he'd rejoined the ring along the broken seam with dots of solder, leaving a visible crack where the original ring had no visible seam. As it turns out, he doesn't know how to repair my ring in any other fashion. My complaint is not, fundamentally, with the quality of the work, but with the communications: he should absolutely not have cut my ring without speaking with me; if he had told me he couldn't get the right-colored solder, I would not have approved the repair. And he shouldn't have done an incomplete repair on the break: if he couldn't rejoin it the way it was originally, he should have just told me so. The flaws in my repair were small, and might not have been objectionable to many, but they were unacceptable to me. He didn't charge me for the work; that's the sole silver lining. Now, I've done what I should have done in the first place: I managed to figure out where I bought the ring, more than a decade ago in San Francisco, found out from them who the maker was, and sent it off to them to be fixed or remade. In speaking with them, it turns out that they use techniques (laser welding) that are beyond the capabilities of a repair shop like Royal Jewel Setting. A good jeweler would have known what was beyond his powers to repair and told me to take it somewhere else; as it is, I don't yet know how much extra my ring repair will cost due to the damage he did by cutting the ring. read more

I desperately needed my engagement ring sized down. I just got engaged a month ago and wasn't ready to give my ring up for over a week to get sized. Luckily, I did some research and came across Royal Jewel Setting Co. I got my ring back in 2 hours! Hachik and his nephew are super sweet and made sure I got my ring back in its original beautiful state, only a size and half smaller. I had a ring guard on and scratched up my band a little bit from moving it around so much. I noticed how incredibly polished and smooth the band was after they worked their magic. There was't a trace left of the scratches I had made. Getting into their office was a little confusing, but if you walk through the little tunnel of stores and take the elevator to the Mezzanine level you'll find their office on the left side. My review is mixed--the work on the ring setting that Hachik did was nice, but in the process of making the setting, he destroyed the painted design on the ring (which I'd gotten in South Africa). He acted completely baffled by my protestation that the design was completely gone--as if there was nothing that he could have done to destroy the design. I had to send the ring back to the artist in South Africa to recreate--a lot of added expense. The artist said it must have been a very strong material that the ring was dipped in to strip it of its painted design. Getting the ring back was a lot of drama. He had me come by numerous times, leading me to believe I was going to be able to pick up my ring, only to be told that he's still working on it. I think, all told, I had to go there about 4 times until I was finally able to get it. He's a nice guy--and helpful--so working with him is really a mixed bag. read more

Just had a ~15-inch individually-knotted pearl necklace restrung after the strand broke after 4 years of wear (only one fell off and was quickly found - that's why you get them individually knotted!). Pros: - Knots are nice and white again vs. previous gray from several years of wear - Only cost $30 - but remember cash only! - Used some wire to reinforced the string at the clasp, which is where the strand had broken this time around - very smart! Cons: - I had to call to see if it was completed, but that isn't too annoying since I dropped it off right before July 4th, he was taking some vacation, and we didn't specify a date, just some time this week. - Some knots are a little too tight causing "kinks" in the strand, but these will smooth out quickly as the string stretches a little. I've been wearing it a couple hours and it's already a little better. Also - the girl who thinks he stole her pearls because the strand came back shorter is a moron (can't say about her other complaints). Whenever you restring pearls the length becomes shorter since the new string is not as stretched out as the old one was. That's why pearls that have been worn a long time have "wiggle room" between the knots. For those of you considering having pearls restrung here, when I dropped them off he counted each pearl on the strand and had me do the same, and wrote the number of pearls on the receipt, so don't worry about them disappearing. Oh, and for those of you trying to get to the place that need explicit directions, there's an entrance to Plaza Arcade on both 47th and 48th, btw 5th and 6th. A little hard to find (it's on the second floor of 27 47th) but definitely worth it. I bought a Gareth Pugh brass ring online that I wanted sized down about 2 sizes. It was a bit of an unusual shape and had a kind of grungy satin finish, so I was a bit worried that the shape and integrity of the piece would be compromised somehow. I had a great experience with these guys. I'm very particular about who does what to my engagement ring/wedding band and get paranoid when handing it off to a stranger. Because of that (and, well, sheer laziness of not having time to research) I hadn't cleaned my ring/band in over two years. I was very hesitant about taking my engagement ring to a jeweler in NYC, but after reading these reviews I decided to let Hachik work on my ring. I was really concerned about leaving my diamonds with someone I don't know and have always heard stories of jewelers switching out diamonds. Wonderful! I had a ring from my mom that I needed resized. Well, to be honest, it got stuck on my finger. I called him, and he told me to ice my finger and then use oil to get the ring off (which worked!). I called again, and set up a time to come in that day to have the ring resized. You see.. my mom's one and only request was that I find someone to resize the ring to make larger in front of me. Do you know how difficult that is? I called so many jewelers, all of whom won't give you the time of day if you didn't buy the jewelry from them, and the rest who send out the jewelry for a week. I came, he made the ring larger and cleaned it -- all within about 20 to 25 minutes. Then, I got a discount because I said I found him on Yelp. The ring is thinner and more delicate than other rings and I needed to put in sizing balls to go down about a quarter of a size. I know it's a fairly common and straight forward procedure but Hachik did a great job and now my ring fits perfectly. He was very trustworthy with such a special ring and I would definitely return to him if I needed anything else done in the future. A very nice guy as well! Also, I thought he was reasonably priced. Cash only. I had a little trouble locating the store at first. At 27 W 47th there's a long corridor that connects 47th and 48th streets. A client of mine demanded that I get a certain insignia engraved on her ring's gemstone, rejecting repeated claims that the engraving job would be unfeasible. Anyways, I spent a good portion of that cold November afternoon in the Diamond District getting bounced around from one engraver to another. As it turned out, it really WAS unfeasible-- the local engravers were either hesitant or just flat-out turned down the job (the gem's table was 6x11 mm.) Contacting the rest of the engravers scattered about the city produced the same result, and by the time I called Royal Jewel Setting Co, I was desperate. Like cut-the-gem-with-my-own-brutish-hands kind of desperate. But i didn't have to, since they took a look at the gem the next day and agreed to do the job. I had asked for it to be done within a week but lasering the gem failed-- RJ Co. would have to do the engraving by hand, and that it would take a while. Like the other engravers who refused to engrave the gem, the dudes at RJS also warned me that they couldn't make it pretty. I did not have high expectations. Anyways, they called me 3 weeks later to tell me the gem was ready, and that I could pick it up for a hefty fee of $450. I thought it was absurd that I had to pay so much for the gem (remember that they kept my expectations low), but I picked it up anyway. After taking a look at the gem's angel engraving, I started laughing-- it was done so goddamn well! (others gasp, widen their eyes, exclaim "oh my god", but I laugh in these kinds of situations.) Still a bit on the expensive side, but in the end I had a freakishly beautiful gem to set on a beautiful ring; not to mention a very happy client. read more

I'm a convert to Royal Jewel Setting Co. for life. My engagement ring is a simple diamond infinity band, and on the Catbird website it says that it cannot be resized. It turned out to be too big, and another jeweler confirmed that it couldn't be resized before putting gold balls along the inside (which showed from the sides and detracted from the ring's elegance). Sure enough, when I found Royal Jewel they let me know that I could absolutely resize the ring. They did so with the utmost care, and you would never know that it had been altered. I consider myself hard to please with a strong visual sense of what I want done when I come to someone like Hachik for his skill and services. I brought to him a vintage designer ring which my wife and I wished to give to our grandchild for her public school graduation. (This may give you and idea of how important the work was to me.) The ring which had a complex embedded design around its entire circumference needed to be enlarged one size up, hand engraved, polished and buffed out around the bezel to remove some nicks and scratches. Hachik very carefully examined the ring and then quoted me a price. I had only a sense of what this "might or possible" cost me from reading other reviews. So, at first, I was a little taken aback by the quote...but being very respectful he explained to me the difficult problems that the ring presented in resizing because of the complicated embedded design work around its circumference, which one could not and would not want to ruin. In addition, laser work had to be done on the inside of the ring to remove and reset the18K and 925 metal markings to provide ample room to engrave the inscription, which I wanted. I totally understood the amount of work and attention that the ring was going to require. AND THE RESULTS? - FANTASTIC! THE COST? - WELL, WORTH IT! HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING... THE ENGRAVING WAS BEAUTIFULLY HAND INSCRIPTED. I have the utmost respect for both his skill and his work. If you have jewelry that's important to you... means something to you... this would be the place I would take it. Being a born New Yorker, I don't believe a repair and jewelry place of this nature could survive in the diamond and jewelry district of NYC - if it wasn't really good. His livelihood and reputation is too dependent upon the trade itself. Word travels too fast in this district. I had some reservations about throwing myself at the mercy of an unknown quantity. the unfixable FiXED! Brought in an expensive 22k designer rubellite pendant that was utterly smashed, having fallen and wedged itself in a sidewalk crack. I had zero hope it could be repaired, but boy was I happily proven wrong! Royal had stone removed and polished and then completely, perfectly reformed the gold setting without disturbing any of the hallmarks. It is now as good as new and for a very reasonable price.
