My best friend (who is Korean) was in town, and whenever she and I are in the same city, we have to have Korean food. It's been something that we've been doing for years. So, after seeing wonderful reviews on Yelp about Kimchi Time, we decided to give it a try!
You must understand that we LOVE kimchi, especially the dish called kimchi bokkeum, which is a stir-fried dish of kimchi (of course), with sliced oval-shaped rice cakes, fatty pork (yum), onions, and jalapenos (not sure if jalapenos are a part of the authentic Korean version, but it's still tasty). We always get this dish when we go to Takamatsu (don't judge us). So, we were hoping that we would find this dish here. There was a dish that sounded similar, a different kind of bokkeum, and when we asked the owner if they put kimchi in it, he wasn't sure and volunteered his wife to explain the dish. Unfortunately, they didn't have the dish, so we had to stuff our faces with something else. No problem there; they had plenty of other items on the menu.
We ended up ordering four dishes to be split amongst me, my BFF, and my fiance: kimchi jeon, soon du boo chigae, yuk gae jang, and dolsot bibim bap. The yuk gae jang came out first, and it was delicious. It was a beef stew in a fiery broth, along with clear noodles, red chilis, onions, and some tasty greens. You eat this stew with rice, and the owners of Kimchi Time chose to serve it with purple rice! It was beautiful. A few dark-colored grains give the white rice a purple tinge. This dish would also be a wonderful thing to eat during the winter season; it warms you right up!
Next, we were served the kimchi jeon, which is a thin egg-based savory pancake, pan-fried with pieces of kimchi and green onions in it and served with a spicy soy sauce-based dipping sauce. My best friend said that this dish is very traditional and is one of her absolute favorites. I couldn't argue with her; it was delicious and reminded me of the scallion pancakes that the Chinese eat, which happens to be one of my favorites.
Then one of the absolute staples of any Korean meal I eat came out: soon du boo chigae. It is a spicy seafood and tofu soup, topped with some seaweed and a raw egg. The soup is served in a very hot stone bowl, so it comes out bubbling. The egg proceeds to get cooked in the spicy broth. I'm salivating while I'm writing about it. The tofu is silkened, which I think it is best kind of tofu texture. You also eat this with rice. I love eating the runny egg yolk because tempers the spiciness of broth. They make this dish very well at Kimchi Time.
As we were gobbling these dishes up, the owner's older son comes over and states that our dolsot bibim bap is taking a few more minutes because they had just run out of rice due to the rush of customers. For those of you who may not have tried the dolsot bibim bap, it is a dish served in a large hot stone bowl, with different vegetables, meat, and a fried egg beautifully laid out over a layer of rice. The best is at the end, when you eat the crispy layer of rice that has been cooked at the bottom of the bowl. They also give you a savory red spicy sauce to put on the toppings. Anyway, I digress. By the time he had come over a second time to apologize for the delay, we were stuffed. We asked if we could have it cancelled, simply because we had enjoyed the other dishes so much that we couldn't possibly imagine eating more. The owner's son was so apologetic, despite us telling him that it was no problem. He then proceeded to ask us if we needed anything else, and to apologize again for the food, he offered us some ice cream. I can't ever say no to ice cream, so he brought us some. He introduced himself to us, stating that his name was David. We were so appreciative of his hospitality. But, the hospitality didn't stop there, before we left, both the owner and his wife came over to apologize for the inconvenience.
All in all, the food was great. And the service was better. In my book, this place deserves a 5-star review. I will have to go somewhere else for my kimchi bokkeum, but for all of my other Korean food cravings, I'm going to Kimchi Time. read more
