NUT ALLERGY ALERT. there were nuts in the salad dressing. I believe peanuts. I'm super allergic to that. I couldn't even enjoy my food. I got sick to the point i couldn't stomach anything. My mother said her food was really good. But I'm very upset that a restaurant would put nuts in a dressing that I've had millions times over and never had an issue at any other restaurant. Kiku is top three best sushi spots in the city. Don't get caught up in the hype of other spots over dressed, over complicated rolls...this is fresh fish done right. And dining inside feels so perfectly quaint and welcoming. But for now while that may not be an option order take out or delivery, and settle in for some really happy food. We popped into Baltimore for a day trip and our first stop was iconic Federal Hill to take a look at all of Downtown Baltimore to kick off the day. We originally planned to peruse Cross Street Market, but a lot of the store fronts were closed as it was Memorial Day Weekend. After a quick look through Yelp, we decided to take pur lunch adventures to Kiku Sushi, which came highly rated. To our surprise, the owners of the restaurant were Korean, as we are, so they were very nice to us and provided us with some extra goodies as they don't have many Korean families pass through Federal Hill. In terms of the food, the sushi rolls were top notch and very delicious. I would highly recommend adding tempura crunch and their sauces to the rolls (eel sauce and spicy mayo). We did order our fair share of udon and yaki udon as we were in the mood for noodles. These were a little bit sweet but also very solid in their own right. One thing I noticed was that there were several parties that rolled through during our lunch hour that were very friendly with the chefs and seemed to have been coming reguarly for quite some time. I was getting off work in Baltimore and was craving some sushi. My go to is usually Shoyou on Light St but my shift ended at 3 pm and Shoyou happens to close at 3 on Saturdays...thus I came upon Kiku Sushi. The ratings were pretty good so thought I'd give it a try for take out since I'm not around much in Baltimore anymore. I ordered the beef yakisoba, Crunch Rock and Roll, and a Maryland Sushi Burrito. Let me just say this is VERY expensive. Those three items got me at about $60 including 15% tip. I think I probably would have been able to get a fourth roll at Shoyou for the price of 3 at Kiku. Also the comments about slow service happen to be true, at least what I experienced. I ran in after parking somewhere "maybe" not where I shouldn't have and if you know city life you know that feeling of trying to get in and out super quick so you don't come upon that dreaded ticket on your windshield. After walking in there was one party that appeared to be waiting for her carry out order. I walked right up to the front register area and I swear nobody even acknowledged my presence for a good 5 minutes. The guy preparing the sushi looked dead at me, and then there appeared to be a girl and what I presume is the wife of the owner behind the counter with their backs to me looking at a line up of boxed orders. I stood and stood for what seemed to me like a long time, and the fact that I had my car in a questionable parking spot irked me more. I was eventually rung up but it that initial lack of acknowledgement was pretty atypical. Beef yakisoba: I know this is a sushi place, but I was craving some noodles, especially relating to the Lo mein variety. Picture attached - to ME there was a tad bit too strong of the presence of veggies, bell peppers, cabbage, broccoli, however, there was a decent amount of meat as well. The overall flavor was salty, like too salty. I get that it's a soy based dish but with the noodles having soaked up the soy sauce, plus the beef, plus the veggies, it was just a soy sauce overpowering dish. Maryland Sushi Burrito: *Note: I was pretty confused about how on their online ordering there were no burritos available. I had to call and ask if they still had sushi burritos, then placed my order by phone otherwise I would not have been able to order it through grubhub* Liked it! Had a lot of real crab (not imitation) and I definitely got that hint of old bay spice in there. Liked the rice paper wrapping as opposed to seaweed personally, again, like Shoyou, but I'd still prefer Shoyou's sushi burritos or $2 less ($13). Came with corn chips, house salad and ginger dressing, and miso soup. Crunch Rock and Roll: Had to get something with eel. This one got a little messy in transit because things shifted around and the wasabi got tangled up with the avocado and house salad it came with. David got a few good mouthfuls of wasabi from eating that salad. Overall this roll was meh, avocado predominated over eel. Not worth the bucks in my opinion. Given the steep price and the fact that I wasn't totally blown away, I would give this an average rating. read more

Going here is one of the things we look forward to the every time my family takes a trip to Baltimore. Everything thing we've tried to so far has been tasty, but, to be honest, I haven't been able to sample the menu very extensively considering I simply MUST get the krazy double salmon roll every time. THE spot to go to, to get sushi in Baltimore. It's always fun to discover great asian cuisine in the heart of the city. And this is a must go if you're looking for delicious and fresh Japanese food. I was recommended to come here by a friend to try out some of their sushi and after ordering all of our dishes containing mostly raw seafood, I was slightly hesitant just because I realized where I was. It wasn't just good sushi, it was GREEEEAT! :) I honestly don't know how they got their fish so fresh. I've been to some fish markets where the quality of the fish wasn't as good as this place! If I had to choose a favorite though, it would definitely be have to be the salmon. I legit almost cried when I took a bite of it. The owners and staff were also really kind and quick to service your every need. This place will be at the top of my recommendations for places to eat in Baltimore. I'm giving this place 5 stars because they gave me solid quality sushi and amazing portions, which is hard to find in Maryland. As an example, for their salmon avocado roll, it was a substantial amount of salmon and the ratio for salmon to avocado was excellent. I'd say 2/3 or 3/4 salmon, as it should be, and they were really good size rolls. Cost was about par, but they gave me hefty pieces of sashimi, many extra pieces, and huge rolls, and it all tasted fresh. I live in Annapolis. Yama and Shika are my go-to around here, but honestly I might make the trip for carryout from this place. I just got carry-out. The inside doesn't really look like a place I'd want to go to for a dinner out. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely a more fast-casual/lunch vibe, and if I'm eating sushi at a restaurant I'd like it to be a nicer dinner environment. The guy at the counter seemed very nice, and was friendly. I got a necessary phone call when he was trying to find my order. His accent was a bit thick, so I think we had a bit of a communication struggle with my name. Unfortunately the menu I found online isn't nearly as detailed as in their restaurant... There is tough competition among sushi restaurants in Baltimore, but this one stands out for their lunch specials! The small space was cutely decorated (although playing pop music instead of ambient music was slightly distracting from the vibe that they were going for in our minds). We had ordered the Kiki maki combo ($15.99 for a regular roll + special roll) and a sushi & sashimi combo ($14.99 for 4 pieces of sushi, 8 pieces of sashimi, and one regular roll of our choice). The price displayed on the menu was less than what we were charged on the final bill; we are not sure if it was because we had opted for the slightly more expensive regular/special rolls without asking them how pricing works prior to ordering. We weren't mad about the up-charge though since we thought the price was very fair for the quality and amount of food we were given. Every bite of food was delicious, the fish was very easy to bite into and extremely fresh, and the fish to rice ratio was stellar (so much fish compared to rice)! Usually we avoid ordering regular rolls, but the eel avocado and spicy salmon that we had ordered was extremely flavorful and had generous amounts of fish. Next time we may even opt for ordering more regular rolls over special rolls since they were so worth it! Each person also received a miso soup and salad for the lunch special, which was nice to curb our appetites since it took a slightly long time for us to receive our actual orders (even though there were only a few other customers dining at the same time as us). We weren't upset that our orders weren't super fast, however, since all of the food was super fresh and beautifully presented. My biggest qualm about my food was that the fish was not fresh. Overall, I do not expect great sushi from Baltimore, but my fish was actually really dry and some of the slices even had a mild stench. In addition, the variety of fish they served was really mediocre. The owner of the restaurant was really sweet. He gave us free edamame as an appetizer and even some free ice cream as dessert, which was quite thoughtful. The food also came out at a good pace despite him being the only chef/waiter in the restaurant. Overall, I would consider going back because I have friends who went and had a decent experience (with the food and otherwise), but unfortunately the food was not fresh at all during my visit. read more

First time coming here upon a friends recommendation, and I think this is the best sushi place around Baltimore! For two people we got the kiku special which included 12 nigiri and a special roll (we picked dynamite roll), we also got a udon noodle soup with funplings and gyoza appetizer, a small complimentary salad was included per person too. Kiku is an interesting sushi joint. Self serve your drinks from the fridge on the right as you walk in - I had a tall boy Sapporo in their famous hardcore can and my girlfriend had a bottle of water. The place had a weird old building smell to it that we acclimated to. There was only one older man that didn't speak English super well manning the few tables, sushi bar, making the sushi and appeared to be running the kitchen as well. Service was reasonably slow, and definitely not bad service. We were given complimentary edamame which is always nice though it was overcooked and somewhat mushy. But free is free! The fish was very good, the maguro particularly was very tender and had a nice buttery flavor. The rice was not quite perfect and had a slight sogginess to it - but was better than many local joints and I'm being very nit picky. Flavor profile was good across the board for the rolls we had, though be warned: the extra spicy version of the spicy tuna roll is not very spicy! Price was very reasonable for a traditional maki it was about 5 bucks and the house specialty rolls were around 11 bucks. Though the Sapporo set me back 7.95 which for a 22 oz isn't bad, as I've paid more for less in other Baltimore establishments. I think I'd prefer this place as a pickup sushi spot in the future, that odd old room smell still wanders the halls of my olfactory system. read more
