It's harder than it looks, but with a little practice you can master it. The Axe Pros are really helpful and fun too. This was my first time back to axe throwing in YEARS. Did the place move? When I did Kick Axe like 4 years ago the place was just a generic warehouse without anything as cool and classy as I saw this time around. There are a bunch of cool signs to take pics with and the vibe is just... well, cabin-ish is a good way to describe it. My friends and I sat at the bar area while one of us checked in and signed up for axe throwing. We had about an hour to kill, so we got drinks and food. I got the hummus, because I love trying different places' recipes. It was served with cucumbers and bread -- both which complimented it well. The hummus was indeed a little saltier than I typically prefer, but delicious nonetheless. I got the blueberry margarita and a glass of Urban Winery Riesling. Their happy hour prices are $7 wines, $10 specialty cocktails and some discounted apps. That was definitely one of the best flavored margaritas I ever had. The Riesling was tasty too, but the marg shined. When it was time to go throw axes, we were signaled for which targets to go to, and we were allowed to bring our food and drinks. I said it back then, but I STILL think it's a dangerous combination to be able to drink and throw axes under one roof. Anyways, Omar gave us instructions on how to throw, where to stand, etc. and I picked it up faster than I thought I would. Muscle memory I guess! I lost count of the bullseyes I got, but I sadly couldn't get my single arm throws back, grrrr. Given how many parties he was checking on, Omar was generous and was always willing to give us tips. There are also some lounge areas nearby with board games, tic tac toe and such. The place is a vibe, seriously. And with Throw Social right upstairs, there's definitely something for everybody. Now this is my kinda fun and food!!! The decor was so beautiful and i think it was all the green that drew me in along with all the textiles and prints! They were throwing axes on the first floor and there was this "cabana beach vibe" at the top. Bartenders were rude and once they even forgot about our drinks and we had to ask a manager to find someone to make them after 45 minutes. The axe instructor Taco was great! Throw social is upstairs and the axe area is downstairs. For upstairs, it's such a cool atmosphere and it feels like you're outside but you're not. There's live music on some nights (I went on a Saturday night). The drinks were fairly priced, mine was $13. Some were good, some were not. Apparently the indoor tents can be booked for $300 but doesn't include any drinks or games. I had asked a waitress and that's what she said. The axe throwing experts are fairly attentive and motivated to helping you enjoy your experience. They offer great tips and instructions for you to get a bullseye, or at least hit the board lol. The minute you walk in (actually even before), you get the feeling the owners/operators really put some time into designing this place. It is quite simply the most "instagrammable" place I've been to in a year. The furniture is a combination of pop/lumberjack/rave/neon sign homage. The bar is large and ample. The bays for each set of targets are comfortable and filled with kitschy signage. I made a reservation on the 4th of July for my family (me, wife, 15 and 17 year olds) and two adult friends. We. Had. A. Blast. Our instructor, Rob, was extremely chill, and very patient with us. We lucked out since literally no one else was in the establishment (and you have to spend a little time exploring Ivy City and its amazing restaurants, cideries, brewery, and coffee spots). And did I mention throwing an axe is a blast? It was. Our sons loved it, and I was very pleased with the safety steps the facility takes to ensure that everyone leaves with the same number of digits they came in with. VISIT THIS PLACE ASAP!!!!! I must say that first! After living in DC for 10 years, I can confidently say this is one of the top spots I've been to for just an all-around amazing time with excellent drinks, outstanding customer service (Andre!!!!) and incredible entertainment! We accidentally went to the wrong spot first (use caution: there's another axe throwing place close by and it's NOTHING like this spot) so we called to say we wouldn't be there the 20 minutes early that they suggest. I do suggest you get there those 20 minutes as you have to sign waivers, get drinks and then listen to instruction. Luckily there was nobody blocked for our lane after us so they were very accommodating and it was no big deal. You will walk in and want to spend several minutes just taking in the scenery. The decor and neon signs are spectacular. It's an IG paradise for sure. I recommend going at least 30-45 minutes early so you can have a drink or 2 first. There are tables and couches and a fireplace to enjoy while you wait. Our axe-throwing guide was Andre and he was SO FUN! He was entertaining and such a joy for the entire group. He also came by nonstop to give us tips and advice on how to throw. I went from not being able to hit any part of the wood to getting the bullseye several times before we left. He would also clean our empty cups from the area and he just ensured our time spent there was absolutely enjoyable. When you're done, GO UPSTAIRS! Do not leave without at least visiting their sister spot (Throw Social) upstairs. You can read my review of that spot next. TIPS: Make sure you are going to Kick Axe and not another spot! Get there early! AT LEAST 20 minutes but to really enjoy it, have a pregame drink and be able to take everything in, I say 45 minutes. We had a group of 5 and it was a good number. I would say 6 is good per booth. More than that, split up and get another booth because this ensures everyone gets plenty of chances to throw. read more

This is the perfect date night experience for you & your partner or make it a couple night with the friends. Best part is it's right across from a parking garage so the hassle of finding parking in DC doesn't exist. It's a beautiful layout 2 floors multiple bars & things to do if you're not a big fan of axe throwing. The only one thing that was a minor disappointment was it's not a real large selection of food so advised to eat before you come. It was limited options like wings, pizza, & like finger foods. But the wings with the whiskey sauce were awesome. One of the major pluses was the service our instructor was super friendly & fun helped all of us learn the proper way of axe throwing & he constantly kept checking on us. Very informative and attentive to everyone on the group, took extra time to coke back and help some on those that weren't as comfortable throwing axes. Only negative was that we ordered food at the window however our order was lost and the food wasn't made till our time was up. Atmosphere was fun and they have tons of other table top games you can play while waiting for your lane time to start or if you need more bragging rights cause you kicked everyone's ass in axe throwing. I know what you're thinking, why would anyone want to be around people who are drinking and are throwing axes? Buuuuut trust me, it is a safe and very fun environment. I have been here twice once with friends, and again on a date - so yes, this venue gives you the perfect environment to have fun in no matter the occasion or group size. You enter Kickaxe on the second floor by going up the steps in front. If you have any mobility issues they have an elevator that can be used on the ground floor. The check-in desk is to the left of the room. My few times visiting I had nothing, but great service. My first time throwing was with Raddy (so sorry if I am spelling that wrong). He was great, gave us clear rules and allowed us to have fun. He even helped my date and I feel comfortable with the other couples that were there. I also commend him for being fearless when one of the ladies was scaring everyone else. The perfect part of the night was me carrying my team lol. My second time there my friends and I threw with Beazy, also a good choice for a fun evening. I highly recommend everyone to visit this location, and I guarantee that I will be a regular. The cost is about $32 a person for an hour, trust me well worth it and much cheaper than going to the shooting range. read more
