My friend just moved in across the way, so I ended up here on a Monday night. As it turns out, Monday is B1G1 drink night so there was a good crowd. I ordered a drink for each of us and they almost lost a star because they charged us for both and gave us an extra drink ticket each. That wasn't exactly our plan, but fuck it, I'm on vacation in New York, right? I found Keybar on Yelp, looking for cheap happy hour bars in the city. It had good reviews and boasts 2 or 1 4-10pm m-f and later on weekend I think. How could I pass up such a sea in Manhattan. So Keybar it is. When my hubby and I arrived at about 5:30pm the bar was empty. The decor was cool for a dive, with small bar and some lounging areas on both sides when you walk in. The music is controlled by the bartender which was strange music at first but as more people arrived she seemed to mix it up more with different genres. The young female bartender was friendly and efficiently refilled our drinks when they were empty but I only gave 4 starts because her personality was lacking. She was on her phone most of the time and several times I tried to start up a conversation with her she was either very short with me or just wasn't paying attention and ignored me. There were some regulars that eventually came in that she seemed to know and talk to at length but again, when I would try and join in she wasn't inviting to a conversation at all. They have limited tap beers but they are the best ones you could want. They had two different Delirium's on tap which was all I needed to know. Within several hours of my arrival the bar filled up and was exactly what I would expect for a 2 or 1 bar in the city to be. I'd say the best part about this place besides the 2 for 1 drinks is that the ticket for the free drink can be used any day, anytime. Yes, you read that right. The last time I was here was around 7 - 8 years ago when I used to live on the east coast. My friends and I stumbled in here around 3am after hearing about their rolo shots. I remember them being amazing (and strong) so when my gf and I visited, I told her about it and made it a point to go again to see if it's the same as I remembered. It was!! We had an awesome time Saturday night! It wasn't too crowded but the people who were there were super fun. The owner was spinning some great music and we got introduced to a bevy of interesting new drinks/shots! All the drinks were fantastic! Especially the spicy ones which used chili infused liquor. Genius! We had to leave to meet someone close by but ended up coming back about an hour later because it was more fun than the place we went to lol. Absolutely loved this spot and all the different drink deals they had! Came here for a friend's birthday before heading out to a club and took advantage of the different deals at the time. With one group I was there between 6-7 and they had half off drinks. From 7 onwards drinks were 2 for 1 in which you get a redeemable voucher on a drink of equal or lesser value. The mixed drinks were strong but delightful. My friends like the lychee martini and continuously bought more once they finished theirs. The music varies - as I've only been there twice I've only had two experiences but the first time I was there it was more tech house and the second time I was there it was more pop. Only downside to this place is that it can get really packed since there's deals going on from 4-10 every day and the bar itself is pretty tiny! My friend and I came here on a Wednesday for happy hour, and were pretty pleasantly surprised for the most part. It's a fun dive bar with super cheap drinks during happy hour, and also has fun birthday shot deals. I got a lychee martini (2/5) and it was way too strong, with not enough lychee flavor. If you're looking to get drunk off less money though, order this drink. My friend got a Huckleberry Sin (5/5) and it was delicious - I'd definitely opt for that because it was more worth the $7 and still pretty strong. We do appreciate you looking into this matter. We came here the day after Christmas. My friend gave the bartender a $3 tip because she was rude and refused to give us the buy one get one drink deal. We were annoyed and disputed it because of what it said on yelp about the deal. She later came back to us and made a big deal about her tip being so low. Fast forward two weeks and my friend's credit card statement says that she was charged more than she paid at the bar. Turns out the bartender turned her $3 tip to a $8 tip. Cozy, Gooooood Vibes! My boyfriend and I walked by this place on Monday night and instantly were drawn in by the mysterious red lighting. I love dark lit places (especially bars) for when things start to get weird. The crowd was super laid back and chill. All around 20-30s. When I first moved into the East Village over ten years ago, I saw three Europeans building a bar on a desolate street in Alphabet City and thought to myself, "this place is gonna to close in a year." There was no foot traffic and Alphabet City was sketchy at best. Ten years later, the Keybar has proven me wrong, thank God! In the past ten years, Attila, Gyuszi and their fantastic staff have built a vibrant, neighborhood friendly venue that has created a sense of community. The last I've heard, there have been almost thirty couples who have met at the Keybar and have since been married (how many are still married is anyone's guess). I've also spent many an orphan holiday with the regulars at the bar. With a generous happy hour, live DJs and a good-looking and friendly staff, the Keybar is THE East Village destination. Some have deemed the small bar a "dive", but it's got more of a lounge feel. Many of the regulars have commented that the bar serves as the neighborhood living room, with a working fireplace, friendly staff and always a few regulars on hand. There is an awesome 2-for-1 Happy Hour Special that runs from 4pm - 10pm from Tuesday through Saturday and ALL DAY on Sundays and Mondays. The way the special works, buy your first round and they'll give you a ticket which you can redeem for a drink of the same or lesser value (any time any day). If you'd like to get a pricier drink, you can pay the difference on the card. I challenge you to find a more generous Happy Hour. In addition to the Happy Hour special, they have a birthday shot special, where you buy a round of shot for your party and they'll buy you another round! This special is good a week before/after your birthday and good anytime. As with all BOGO specials, I recommend tipping on the service not on when you pay, you're a grown-up act like one. so i attended a YELP event here last night 8/22/13. It was such a great time. this place is very small, i had no idea. but there are cute chairs, couches and some tables for people to enjoy a good time at. The bar itself has some seating at, but when people are naggin on you to move over to get a drink-this can suck. id totally avoid trying to sit up there. however, even though it was a small place and had around 50+ people in it, i got my drinks and shots and beers in minutes... wasnt much of a wait which is great! since it was happy hour until 10, you buy anything and get one of equal value or less for free! it was awesome! $6 for a magic hat #9 and i got a ROLO SHOT. these are delish and apparently their own creation. i reccomend it, its a bit like a strong version of kahula with a spike of vodka. downfall---i came her for just 2 drinks...yelp says they take credit cards but its a $20 min. NOw on normal nights(friday and sat) when im trying to get sauced, this would be no problem with me and my liver. however, since it was happy hour..$6 drinks..and you get one for free..i would have to had to drink about 6 drinks at least. (while only buying 3) to meet the amount of $20. (Which sucked for outdoor seating) The waiter, whose name I can't remember, was so determined to seat us he gave us an umbrella and dried the seats so we can sit. Keybar is small, you walk in and it's pretty much what you see is what you get. There are couches in two corners and right in front is the bar. There wasn't a lot of people, but it was crowded because of the small space. Granted the drinks are cheap, but it was hard to find a space to stand in, all the four corners were taken so I ended up in the middle area, but that's where the traffic is because everyone is passing to get in and out. It is really dim in here though which I don't mind. I actually like bars that have a more intimate vibe. Not sure if this is a spot for a big group though because it is a really small bar. Visited it over last weekend during bar hopping in the east village. This place has the perfect setting for a great evening with friends. Though not huge,but the place serves the purpose of being a good hangout joint for the revellers. The decor is hip and somewhat different when I compare with the other bars in the area. We walked in around 9.30 and the place was packed but still we were able to grab hold some seats available in the corner. Now coming to the drinks, one should definitely the signature shot called as rolo vodka shot. The shot was really amazing and was very different as compared to what I had at other places. Keybar has been "old faithful" for years. It's truly a dive. The alcohol is cheap, but from my experience doesn't lead to hangovers. I've never had a watered down drink here, as others have reported. The 2-for-1 is real. You buy one, they give you a ticket which you can use same day or during any other visit. Good music is usually playing. Crowd is mixed. Bathrooms are clean. Melissa the bartender at the time. She was beyond snobby and super nonchalant to my friend and I. We ordered our drinks and we noticed everyone but us was being attended to. She came and ask if everyone was okay or needed anything but us.. It's a small bar so she couldn't have missed us, I decided to give her another chance. She constantly made eye contact with me but refused to come over and at least try to see if we wanted anything else. This is rude and disgusting. It's 2018... I think we should be passed that race thing. We was the only AA people there and I peeped the shade even in this terribly lit place. (note: the owner had wrote a comment but no apology. He states the only thing I can think about is racism.. when it was the reason why I wrote my review. It's so sad.. but that's even more proof. Save your money, go somewhere else) Drinks was watered down, music was okay but I felt like I was in a horrible one person rave. I ended up going to Trader Joe's and buying some bomb ass wine . I'm here with Robert and Lauren to drink the night away, giggling like a child in a white shirt with black splotches that's very farm-like. The music is great, albeit loud, and I'm having such a good time that Robert pulls me aside and quips, "This is the first time I've felt you were actually smitten with Lauren." It's a dig. In his stupid English accent. And I'm a little hurt by it, not because we've been dancing together the three of us, drinking relatively cheap beer, but because I know it deep down that I've been falling in and out of love with Lauren since we started dating. I'm ashamed of my easily discernible heart. "I have some other big news," he says. "It's why we're here." When Robert suggested Keybar, I had no idea what to expect. He's my one painter friend with more monetary success. I've never hung out with him outside of his LES flat except for happy hour micheladas in the east village. No nightlife. Would this be some soulless lounge? Before hanging with him, I'd picture Robert in places that sprinkle their guacamole with pomegranate seeds. I'm pleased to experience something this divvy, this laid back. Perhaps what I like best about Keybar is that everyone here is properly drunk. Deep. Sweating, understanding that life is creation. Life is destruction. Soaked with self-abuse. It's not in our bar tabs, but our eyes. I lament for us, I want to hug everyone in Keybar and melt inside them, be the forsaken chocolate in their pockets. A couch in the corner is for my Lauren, her long legs extended. The bar isn't so packed that we couldn't claim it. So I sit and stroke her leg and motion to her and Robert for a cigarette outside. The bouncer is kind, and nods. We smoke and talk and venture back in to drink some more and more and more. Away from Lauren, a girl calls me a cow. I remind her I'm remarkably thin and perfect, and she says, "No, your shirt." But she didn't get my joke until I raised my eyebrow ever so slightly, my smile, coy. I realize how good and comfortable I am with women...that if I stay a second longer it'll get me in trouble. I walk my drinks back to our little nook in the corner. Robert and Lauren against the exposed brick, both in black, are framed perfectly by Keybar. Perfect in the loud music. Blurred, bruised pristine. Wavy. I almost spill. "Jamie," Robert says, "I've committed to three paintings." For Mr. King I presume...And I smile but I feel very threatened. I tell him the next round is on him and he's lucky that the prices here are more than New York reasonable. read more

You buy a drink and they give you a coupon for a free drink (up to $10). You don't even have to use it the same visit. Drinks were bad. I was expecting cheap alcohol but this tasted cheaper than cheap. Fraternities wouldn't even serve it at their parties. But I know, I know....what did I expect at that price. I would just stick to beer and they have a pretty good selection on tap (including Abita Purple Haze!) The place is dark, damp, and loud (or maybe I'm just old). Almost like you're back in high school and you're in someone's basement party drinking Mike's Hard and/or Smirnoff Ice. But seriously - get in, stick to the beer, and get out. read more
