The key to my Chevy broke. As a savvy shopper I called around to find the best price. These folks were rude over the phone and worse in person. I'm the kind of guy who just lets most things roll off his back, but the guy working there was so insufferable that I just left. Referred someone to get a Toyota remote to unlock and lock the car. She pays $220 and the key would not unlock and lock the doors... So they decided to only give her a $50 refund because the key was too expensive?!?!? Horrible customer service after I try calling to see why they would not give a full refund, owner starts getting smart with me and being rude. Matt at the Durham location (Guess Rd.) gave me a great deal on a smart key for my Prius, saving me more than 30% of what the dealership quoted me, and hours of my time. He was friendly and communicative on the phone, and answered all my questions. It was easy to schedule a timely appointment to get the new key programmed, and Matt explained the process to me, start to finish. The whole key cutting and reprogramming was done in about 20 minutes. I'm really pleased with his work. I hope I don't NEED to use his services again (replacing a smart key is still really expensive), but will gladly recommend him for great value and service. read more

Just a word of caution. Last week, I had a couple of key fobs checked by them, neither seemed to be working. They put a new battery in one and it's fine, the other one needs reprogramming, but they needed the car there. I was quoted $60 for reprogramming the fob (it needs a special machine ... thanks GM). Went today to have the reprogramming done. Gentleman at the counter indeed say it would cost $60 ... *BUT* they could not guarantee it would work. If it didn't work, I still owed them the $60 and they would sell me a new fob for about $125 (again, that's a lot I know, but it's GM and requires a special machine to be programmed. The cautionary part is the $60 non-refundable fee if the reprogramming didn't work. I feel that in actuality, if the store takes the work, and cannot guarantee the work, it shouldn't take the work. I did offer, trying to be fair, to split the $60 fee with them if the reprogramming failed, the gentleman was not interested. I left at that point and no business was transacted. That's it. Just a cautionary and "be prepared ahead of time" tale. read more

Key Harbor is awesome and saved me ton of money. I broke my key fob with a flip out key. Dropped it on the ground and boom dealer said $400 to fix. Took it to Key Harbor and unfortunately they could not put the key back into the key fob. However for $75 they were able to remake my key. When I went into the store one of the guys that works there was playing the piano. Really cool atmosphere. I dropped my key off ate lunch in the mall. Came back an hour later and the place was packed! I will be recommending this place to everyone! read more

Excellent service. They came out to the house and programmed my new key. After trying to jump my car, my car still wouldn't start. 10 minutes after the technician left, I received a phone call from him saying that he looked up the problem my vehicle was having and tells me I had a recall on my car. The young lady who works at Key Harbor was helpful and nice. The owners on the other hand, have no concept of customer service and were rude. I visted Harbor Key because I wanted a lock smith to code my key and cut a perfect copy, which is superior than a trace and copy that you can get at any hardware store. I agreed to pay $35 to have my key decoded and $18 for each key copy made. I was there an hour, yet the two key copies that Harbor Key made would not work. Each would open the door but not turn the ignition. The owner attributed the problem to the key blank. No problem right? WRONG! The owner expected me to pay! What a joke! Two keys that would not work and they expected me to pay for them?! I told them I would pay when I have keys that work. To help the process along, I ordered factory blanks from the dealer and took them back to Harbor Key a week later. Apparently, they did not save the codes from my last visist and wanted to trace and copy the key instead of decoding it again. I reminded them that the whole point of going to a locksmith was to get key coded copies, not traced copies. They were unwilling to take another shot at decoding the my key and cutting copies from the codes. They acted like it was my fault. They said that they were locksmiths and professionals and that their time was worth money yet they ignored my side of it - I only pay for keys that work. This was a complete waste of my time. It was surprising in this day and age to run into a business so out of touch. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Let me start from the beginning. I called to ask if I could come in to get extra keys made and the man on the phone said yes we have your keys in stock and we can get them made right away. So I drive over there, the man playing the synthesizer (not a bad musician) went into the back for a bit and came back and said sorry we don't have your keys in stock. CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUE #1! Maybe instead of playing some tunes he should focus on not wasting his customers time. He said come back tomorrow and we will get some keys in for you. So I come back the next day and they had the keys I waited about an hour and got the new keys. They worked fine. The guy that made the keys showed me that I should be careful where I hold the key when I put it in the ignition and start the car. He said to hold it right at the spot the metal key inserted into the remote because they have had issues with the keys cracking and breaking. I thought that was unusual since my original keys were 8 years old and no cracking issues but still didn't think much of it I just thought he was being helpful. So a few days later I tried to use my original key and my car would not start. Not being a key programming expert I assumed something was wrong with my vehicle so I called in sick to work (can't make much money if I don't go to work) got my car towed to the dealership which was not cheap. The dealership let me know my key was not currently programmed for my car. The dealership asked if I had had keys made recently and I said yes. He asked where and I told him and the dealership said to be careful with keys not bought at dealerships because they tend to break as they have different metal key inserts...I think I have heard that before? So I called Key Harbor and asked them if getting the new keys would cause this issue and they said YES! CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUE #2! So due to their negligence of not informing me this would happen I got to spend $230 for the tow and diagnosis on top of the $280 I paid for the 2 additional keys. As you can imagine at this point I am starting to get a little upset. She did say they would reprogram the 2 keys again along with the original key if I brought them back in. And she emphasized they normally would charge for that but she would do it for free. CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUE #3 I think doing it for free is a should be a given. So I took a 3rd trip to Key Harbor and brought all 3 keys back in and told them I was not happy at all with them and I wanted to return the keys. Of course that was not an option. The young lady at the store admitted to 'not covering all their bases' and it was their mistake but they would not do anything for me. CUSTOMER SERVICE MISTAKE #4 Maybe offer a small discount or something as a token of we are sorry we caused you this trouble and we would like to make it right. NOPE! In our conversation I mentioned I have a valet key and she said oh you need to bring that in so we can program that one too. YIKES here we go again. I drive back home and make a 4th trip to Key Harbor and it takes 9 minutes to get all 4 keys programmed at a rate of $59 which she made another point of not charging me but gave me a receipt. Help me with the math here but I think that is $354 an hour...not bad! I could go on and on about the attitude I got in the store (I am sure I returned some attitude as well) but I hopefully I have made my point. I really need to start recording these types of interactions as I bet the responses I get would be much different. I tend to lean towards little mom and pop stores like this because of customer service but in this case I didn't get it. They will replace your battery in your key only for it to die a month later. They will blame you for your key battery burning out such as "you may have bumped it in your pocket". The lady working the phone 12/05/2014 started listing several reasons why their not liable for any faulty batteries on their end. Simply put, their batteries suck and they claim that they test it before they install ...BS. How do you think they get return business? No customer care at all.. PS. This is the type of company that will smile and love you for your business, but will stab your back if you return to them with an issue from the service they provided. read more

Called to see if they would remove an immobilizer chip from a factory VW key for me and they said yes, but that they could not guarantee that it would work and that they would have to charge me for labor no matter what. Store attendant couldn't answer why it wouldn't work, and repeatedly dodged the question of if he broke it, would the company still be liable. At this point, the store attendant seemed to become irritated and rude saying he didn't have time to back and forth with me before finally admitting that they would not be liable for any damage to the chip when removing it because "it was not their product." Obviously a factory VW key will never be their product, but trying to point out the obvious to them was hopeless. I suspect that they would claim something happened to the chip and try to sell me one of their new $250 keys. STAY AWAY! This place screams scam, and I wouldn't trust them with any work that needs to be done. read more

Excellent service!! We had one key repaired and a duplicate made all in less than half an hour. The gentleman working there was friendly and answered all of our questions both over the phone and in person. The store interior has fun decor. There is a small waiting area, but because of the convenient location you can also walk around the mall while you wait if you want to. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Bought a keyless entry remote here last June. Paid nearly $150 for it. Well, a couple of weeks after it started to crack and it started chipping away until just recently it doesn't stay together anymore. I guess its my fault that I didn't take it back right away when it started to crack. Still have my receipt, but when I finally had time to come back to the store, I was told that the remotes are only guaranteed for 30 days. The guy at the counter told me that I could purchase a new one and he'd give me a $10 discount. That would be $89 for the remote and $39 for the programming. What a ripoff!! They should have replaced it for free. Should have searched online to begin with because I got a brand new remote for only $17.95 on amazon with DIY instructions for programming. I can't believe they charge so much at the mall!! My advise is to do an online search before spending all that money on something that is going to fall apart anyway. They should be guaranteed for at least 1 year. Learned my lesson. Hope no one else has to go through what I did. read more

I had my remote key replaced by them six months ago and then again yesterday. I thought service was great the first time and very prompt and courteous. However, I did not expect my key to break so soon and thought they should replace it for free. They refused as it is outside of their 30 day warranty. They offered me half off, which would not have been so terrible if it weren't for the way I was treated to and talked to in the store. The man behind the counter was not only a key salesman but also must have a degree in physics as he not only insisted it was my fault and that this key would not break without some major trauma, he also insisted he knew the nature of the trauma by inspecting the cracks on my broken key. He lifted the back off the key (it was attached just cracked on both sides when I arrived) and rendered it basically unusable. He then insisted someone had stepped on my key hard. I take very careful care of my key, especially since my key just broke six months ago and the last guy who replaced it here told me to be really gentle with it so I found this to be insulting and humiliating. I argued with him but it was useless. He could tell by looking at my key what happened to it as he was House or Macgyver of keys or something. I just wanted to leave the store at that point but I felt I had no choice as the key was now in pieces. I asked if I could just pay for parts and he said, "this is a $300 key!". I know this is not true as they would be out of business. When pressed, he said he did not know what they paid for the key. I asked to talk to the manager and he called her on the phone. Instead of letting me talk to her, I had to listen to him tell her what he thought happened to my key again. He exaggerated the deficits to support his story. Then, he took a picture of my key to send to her once he had already taken it apart. He then made me hold up the front part of my key and put tension on either side in the opposite direction to exaggerate the tiny crack in the front so that he could make it show up on his camera phone! He sent her the picture and apparently she agreed with him as I was never able to speak to the manager myself. I waited for the key to be made (took five minutes). The fact that this key has broken on me twice in one year (I am not hard on my things) and I have never had to replace a key before after driving for 20 years prompted an Internet search. Apparently, the Totota Yaris remote key breaks quite frequently and there is a known problem about this issue. Key Harbor takes no responsibility for the parts it carries (the man insisted it was the same key parts used at the dealer). Furthermore, the key parts can be obtained for less than $5 online so this place has got to be making a killing. So perhaps it is Toyota's fault for making a horrible key and they should be held responsible? Why does this place only offer a 30 day warranty to begin with? They must know these keys break easily and often. I should have never stepped foot in this place. Next time if/when this key breaks, I am going to buy the parts online and do it myself. I was not aware this was an option yesterday or I would have walked out with some dignity left. read more

Their car keys are junk...go to the dealer. A friend of mine and I bought keys from Key Harbor. They lasted about a year. The one from the dealer has lasted for 8 years and still works. They would not stand by their junk. Their keys just fell apart...Don't get a programmed car key from these people. read more

They are extremely friendly, helpful, and went out of there way to stay open 20 minutes late so we wouldn't be stranded out of town and with a broken car key the day after Christmas. The key was made perfectly, and I waited 7 monthsjust to come back to them when we were out of town so they could copy my other vehicles key for me. They are incredible people. read more

We chose to utilize Key Harbor's services as an alternative to paying the dealer a huge mark-up for the same product. There was only one review at the time that I could find and that customers only complaint was that the employees had moved her car without her permission. I decided that if we could locate their designated parking spaces this would eliminate this situation from occurring. After receiving a quote I made an appointment and we took the car in for service. When we arrived for our appointment I immediately had a sense of disorganization as there were no forms to fill out, no discussion of the process, didn't ask for any contact information, nothing. The only thing the staff were concerned with was finding out EXACTLY how we heard about them. We were asked multiple questions about our internet search results and how long it took for us to locate their business information. We gave them our only set of keys and told them we were parked in the designated parking area. We were told that it should take about 30 minutes to complete the process. We walked around the mall and returned about 45 minutes later and were told that they were just finishing up. The lady behind the counter handed us the new key and expected us to pay without first testing to ensure that it worked. Her response was "they just tested it". After agreeing to leave the original key in her possession we went and tested the new key. We were pleased to see that the key worked properly. We paid and left the mall happy. Later that evening we discovered that our car was not functioning properly and were positive that it was related to the key programming of the car. As a result we called Key Harbor to try and troubleshoot the problem. They were very reluctant to assist but did (in a very disorganized way - multiple calls from multiple individuals). Eventually they tested the keys to ensure they worked and then told us "the keys work, it's your car that is the problem, we can't help you." While troubleshooting we were told by the owner that they had "jumped" our battery (on a vehicle less than 2 years old) when they programmed the keys earlier in the day. Apparently they felt this was not important information to pass along when we paid. I'm not sure if this is regular practice but we did not have any battery issues before or after this incident. We learned later that the jumping of the battery was the cause of our car malfunction and that certain things needed to be reset in order for the car to function properly. So in the end, we ended up at the dealer anyway. I will say that we left Key Harbor with two working keys to our car which is what we paid them for but we were extremely disappointed with the customer service, mainly the tone/attitudes of the employees and owner by the time our experience was over. The last conversation with the owner consisted of words that clearly did not match his tone and he basically said what he had to say and then hung up on me. If you have an older car that you don't care much about then maybe this is an option for you as they did produce working keys for a decent price but if your car has the slightest bit of technology I would be reluctant to let them touch your car because if anything goes wrong, it's not their problem. I'm generally a forgiving person and easy to work with but this experience left a very bad taste in my mouth, hence the review. Sorry for the length but I felt like you should know what you are getting into. read more

A million thanks to Key Harbor. I was running the WaDuke trail last night, and lost my key on the trail. After a long search, and a good Samaritan, my key was returned. Panic stricken, I called a mobile locksmith today to have a spare key made, so that if I was ever in this predicament again, at least I had a spare. The guy came out, and after 3 attempts at cutting and programming by 2004 Ford Focus key, all I had was a key that unlocked the door. Thankfully the guy said I could get a "clone" key cut of my original and he recommended that I go to Key Harbor. Mind you I was 45 bucks deep at this point. I knew I needed a spare so I headed out. It took less than 5 minutes, and next thing I know.....viola! A working spare key for my car. And the cost? For a programmed clone key? 69 bucks......the other locksmith, would have charged me 90 bucks! Not only did they get me a great, smooth new key, but they were super helpful, and had a GREAT selection of MLB keys. I am now the proud owner of a new SF Giants key. Thank you so much Key Harbor! The location is great and I was able to get some shopping done while I waited. It was nice talking to them after it was done and I left with a good feeling. We bought a used car with only one key, so we went to key harbor to have a second one cut and programmed. Key harbor was unable to program the key, however they charged us $100 anyway! When we protested, they insisted they had told us beforehand that we would be charged even if they couldn't make a key for us. Even if that were true, what a terrible business practice. Great service, had two keys made, one was new with chip programming etc. The other was just a key for a 2002 Camry. I had a number of keys made prior that didn't work, this one worked and was only $9. Great service and much cheaper than the dealer. I read another review that complained however after having experiencing their service it appears to me that the customer was the problem, not Key Harbor. Last benefit, you park your car in their programming area and go shop while they make and program your key. read more

When the business was a kiosk in Triangle mall, they sold me a replacement for y viper remote. I questioned the compatibility when they sold me another brands remote. Thu promised it was the same ID and it could work. After extensive travel and time spent at best buy to try and get the remote programmed, I was told it was incompatible. Best Buy was nice enough to type up a letter stating the incompatibility. I next traveled to the kiosk, now a store at Crabtree, with the letter and asked for an explanation and a refund. The personnel on shift said I had to wait to speak to the owner. Without the old fat lady even meeting me, she left me nasty message on my phone telling me not to attempt to return the unit, and she would call security if I stop by the kiosk. Boggled, as I only stopped by twice askIng for a solution. To speak to the nasty lady, I had to schedule a meeting with mall security. After speaking with the two and furnishing the proof, she said I was harassing the company and was not willing to help me. I still have the key fob for a foreign brand and have found it impossible to sell it. There goes my $86 spent on the fob. Shop there only if you want a 100% no return possible and idiot personnel. read more

Poor customer service. Poor quality keys!! I don't plan to visit this store again and I'll be telling my friends and neighbors the same. They did a shoddy job of making my key. For $225 I got a key that opened the doors, started the car and unrolled the windows ... on it's own ... arbitrarily. At first I thought my kids and husband were trying to prank me ... Later I realized the Christine like behavior was actually due to the key I bought from Key Harbor. At first I was told they weren't willing to fix they key, but I could buy another one? They are correct ... it did take me longer than 3 months to figure out the key was behind the problems. At first it was just the door ... and I really thought my kids were to blame. The problem was very arbitrary/intermittent at first. The longer I had the key, the worse it got ... but that was because more of the little metal discs inside the key were shifting because they were never properly secured. After my van was flooded last night because the windows unrolled themselves, I was told, by a woman who claimed to be part owner, that they were too busy to talk with me and that it wasn't their issue to deal with. She said I knew my key was faulty and didn't bother to do anything to fix it? It is true I did realize the key was faulty ... but I was afraid I would cause more damage by opening the key myself and I had not received any help from Key Harbor yet. However, after my van was soaked during a massive rain storm last night, my husband and I decided anything we did to the key wouldn't be any worse than the key was already behaving. When we looked inside the key, we found that there were lots of little thing metal discs that were shifting around on the inside of the key. With a little glue, we attached the round discs to places corresponding to the buttons on the key ... and now the key works fine again. Too bad the "professionals" at Key Harbor who made the key didn't bother to properly do this in the first place. Now, maybe, I can go shopping without worrying that my doors will be hanging open, with my windows rolled down and my van running. I'm sure folks passing by thought my van was some sort of "bait" car for the show "Cops". Thanks for your lack of help Key Harbor. In the future I'll just go ahead and pay the dealership for a working key. After last night's rain, I'm still trying to get the water out of the speakers in my van doors. This is a one stop shop ... they lead desperate folks in search of a fast, inexpensive fix for their expensive key issues to believe they are the solution. It may be a short term fix ... but I wouldn't be surprised if you found yourself shelling out more dough for a true fix just over 3 months down the road. Looked up automotive locksmith and called these guys. I explained my unique issue on the phone, requiring either fixing my broken locks or getting a keyless entry system. They said they didn't do locks, but could do keyless entry. They made me pay up front to order the equipment. When I got there, the guy cut the key without even looking at my car. When he looked at the car, he told me that my car didn't have keyless entry installed (duh) and that there was nothing they could do. They tried to give me a "discount" on the $180 useless key. I asked him why he didn't check my car before he cut the key, and he said he assumed I had it. I said I knew I didn't have it, but assumed it was capablel, and that I am not a car expert. He kept berating me for not giving them all the information, when I had explained my situation clearly on the phone. The guy said that since he wasn't the one who took my call that he didn't know any of that. I asked him if they kept records of customer calls, and he didn't answer me. He told me that if I bought the car new (he complained that I didn't tell them I bought it new, even though that didn't seem relevant at all) and they didn't give me a key fob, then obviously the car didn't have keyless entry. If that's true, then why did he go ahead and cut their fob knowing that my key was apparently a clear signifier that my car couldn't do keyless entry? He kept saying that he wasn't there when I called, it wasn't their fault, and I should have given them all the info. He then accused me of being cheap and not willing to pay to fix my locks, even though that was a thing I had inquired about when I called. Eventually a reasonable lady came out and offered me just a $25 "diagnostic fee", I said fine and asked for a refund of the rest that I paid them. They didn't have me in their system as having paid, so they had to go through every transaction on the day that I called in order to find me. I politely told them that they should keep better records, since it was rude of them to repeatedly insist that I didn't give them all the info when I did. She got rude and said they were losing money on this. I said that I also lost money as well as my time. HERE'S THE KICKER: When I got home I learned that they had reprogrammed my car somehow that my husband's key will no longer start my car. They effectively broke equipment that wasn't even there. So now I'm even worse off than when I started! Rude, horrible customer service, and completely unprofessional. read more

Absolutely no tact, respect nor couth when it came to trying to discuss/rationalize my disappointment in regards to the product/service I was initially informed I would receive versus what was provided in the end. I won't go into further details about my purchase because I did receive what I paid for - a refurbished keyless remote. HOWEVER, I received conflicting stories/excuses from each individual that stood behind the counter regarding the "cosmetics" of the remote. So, my dispute is not necessarily with the product that I received but more so with the fashion it was handled in. I was promised one thing, given another and then practically chastised when I returned asking for an explanation. So this review, at the very least, I wanted to highlight the fact that the common courtesy that the owners hold (one in particular) is severely flawed. My suggestion to this individual would be to realize that speaking to someone in a more civilized tone will get you much farther in this world than flying off of the handle when it's completely unnecessary; and more importantly, when you weren't being addressed or spoken to in that manner. Lesson learned and I definitely won't be recommending this store to anyone. read more
