So I have a couple of visits to the brick and mortar building location for take out only. I'm new to Hawaiian food, so was going off of pictures for my first order and let me tell you, so hard to choose! The first time I got the Kalua Pork and Cabbage, oh my, I was not expecting so much flavor to come through with such simple ingredients, but it made me a convert forever! Sweet, smokey, and salty, a pop of fresh and bright coming from the bitterness in the wilted cabbage too. I have also gotten their teriyaki chicken platter, it's not overly sweet or salty, and has a delicious char on it. I normally hate Mac Salad, but I get it here everytime, the vinegar in the salad helps add some much needed brightness and acid to the meal. I personally love the juxtaposition of the hot grilled items with the cold salad. Next on the list to try are their tacos, beef platter and spam fried rice (hoping it comes across like Chinese sausage fried rice!). But I will probably always hit up the Kalua Pork. They have a someday limited menu, but that just means they focus on executing well. Instead of overextending. I am a huge fan of asain flavors in general and so glad to add this place to my rotation of Asian cuisines. For me Hawaiian food has more sweetness in it than some other Asian cuisines, and sometimes you just want that itch scratched for that flavor. Additionally, they have online ordering (my millenial heart loves this for businesses) and easy pick up, while I haven't dined in, the take out process I have always been met with a friendly personality and quick service. And you know they are clean considering they take the mandates seriously. I love their social media response to the latest guidelines, it's not that fun, but also for the general customer, mask is 5 minutes versus the workers who wear them their whole shift. Don't make things more difficult by coming in and talking about rights being infringed upon. Go or don't but if you're like me, this is important consideration for who you want to support. read more

Very good Hawaiian style food! My husbands company hired Kenjis for an entertainment night out. Our favorite is the BBQ Chicken. A mild Hawaiian style bbq flavor! Great rice. Made well with awesome macaroni salad that had fresh carrot slivers and black sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Nice touch! We recently found their restaurant off South McCarren down Longley to Spring street in a cute little strip mall. My husband had the curry bowl with Tofu. The curry was great and not spicy, just great flavor! They have this awesome part of a Food truck for the kitchen! It's a real food truck! They have designed the place with corrugated walls and fun pictures. A nice place with good vibes! My husband is from Hawaii, so we try most the Hawaiian places where we live. So far this is our favorite, as the food is cooked great, chicken still moist but cooked right! I have been frequenting Kenji's ever since they were a food truck. Their food was always a go-to staple back in my bar hopping/pub crawl days. Needless to say, they still got it! The El Hawaiiano is quite possible my new favorite sandwich (though I really miss their Kenji Burger from back in the day). The portions are even larger than I remember, and I have yet to come across an item on the menu that disappoints. Whether it's their BBQ plate, or their quesadillas, Kenji's food doesn't miss. It's even more convenient now that they have a brick-and-mortar location, as you can place an order online, and just pick it up without having to investigate on social media where they'll be next (although, I'd still give them a follow to look at their delicious items). Kenji's was a surprisingly delicious lunchtime value! The TL:DR version of this review is that the new restaurant has a cool vibe, the food is delicious and very value oriented around $10, but my qualms are they use styrofoam containers for service (vs. eco friendly or reusable) and beyond coleslaw and a small pile of spring mix with a beautiful dressing, they don't offer any vegetable options for sides. I know it's traditional plate lunch and that there is cabbage under the protein, but I think a lot of customers would appreciate something else to replace starches. If you've followed Reno's food truck scene you know Kenji's was literally one of the first to bring food to the people. My first taste goes all the way back to a cold night at 3rd Street Bar. The truck was setup outside (before all the ordinances were out in place) and a friend and I shared a few of their Korean/Hawaiian fusion tacos to fill our bellies. The tacos were good enough for me to remember that it was good this far into the future, so when asked about grabbing lunch nearby, the new restaurant location quickly came to mind. The restaurant has a rad vibe and more importantly, the business model makes perfect sense! The restaurant is inside the commercial kitchen they use for the truck, so they can now do both when the opportunity is right! Now here's the coolest part... They literally put a food truck inside the building! Ok it's a shell of a truck but who cares! Your food comes out of the window just like it would if you went to the truck itself, but now you get to order from a counter POS. Having the full kitchen also allows them to run specials in addition to their menu. I have been trying to watch what I'm eating, so I went for the chicken plate, which came with rice, and got green salad as my side. The chicken was cooked so well! Charred from the grill, well marinated, juicy and crispy too. The white rice was fluffy and the perfect vehicle for soaking up the juice and sauce remaining. But the star of the show was the salad dressing! Not sure what it is, but it's awesome and I put it on the whole meal! I'll definitely be back, and soon. We came in for lunch on (5/3/19) and found the seating situation uncomfortable for this of us with bad backs and lacking in places to seat their hungry customers. We felt a bit rushed to finish our meal, because people were standing near us waiting for a table to open up. I ordered the Japanese curry with chicken. When it arrived it looked more watery than I expected. The flavor was not bad, but the consistency was not what I am used to. My wife ordered the the BBQ chicken plate. She said the flavor was ok, and was turned off by the several pieces that were charged, this taking away the flavor of the dish. read more

My co-workers are always getting lunch here so I figured I'd see what the fuss is about. I decided to try the El Hawaiiano sandwich and it knocked my socks off! That Kalua pork is so good and the flavor combinations in that sammy were fireworks, not to mention the ooey gooey cheese. I am always on the lookout for places that have Hawaii style plate lunch and found this one by chance. Looked really cool in the pics and decided to try them out. They are located on the southside of Reno Tahoe International Airport and tucked away in a small strip mall. The colorful sign above will let you know your in the right place. There are picnic style benches outside and the inside has a few small tables and chairs. The decor of the interior is like an industrial look and if you really want to see this type of look, use their restroom. The menu is not large, but has a good selection. We chose the BBQ chicken plate lunch with a pork street taco on the side. Both came out really fast. The chicken was tender with good flavor, definitely not salty. The pork taco was also very flavorful and messy! This place has limited hours of 10-6pm so you won't be able to eat there anytime you want but it is good. read more

Kenji's usually has the longest lines at the food truck events and for good reason. The kalua pork tacos are some of the best on earth. Great flavor, good amount of spice and wonderful cucumber mix. When I saw that they have a Japanese curry bowl, I knew I had to try it, as it's a comfort food I haven't eaten in awhile! I got tears in my eyes it was so hot! I should have asked, so it's my own fault. The chicken was excellent and I will try it next time. Yes, we will be going back! And, let me repeat the restaurant is really on Longley. The Spring Drive address does not help orient customers to their spot. I have enjoyed numerous menu items with their Japanese noodles a particular favorite. Food is prepared well, especially for takeout/to-go options. The lunch hour can be busy so be prepared if you arrive during peak hours. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Beware there is almost no seating inside and few options outside. Today (5/23/18), Kenji's Food Truck stopped by our office. I obviously had to get something, so during my break, I quickly made an order. My friend also came out and ordered something as well. She ordered two steak tacos, and I ordered a Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Plate. I definitely sampled some of my friend's tacos and they were so refreshing. Imagine biting into a mildly soft tortilla, tender beef and the crunch of the red onions and cilantro gives that taco a most satisfying bite. I should have ordered some myself! My Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Plate was so delicious. Again, their mac salad stands out and I can't get enough of it. The char on the BBQ chicken accompanied with their glaze gives that chicken so much flavor. Next time, I'll be sure to order the Kalua Pork and Cabbage! I love this place! The dining area may be a little tight especially around lunch time but it's worth the wait! It's slightly tucked away past the mini mart and parking is generally okay! I love the Hawaiian BBQ beef plate. It comes with rice and a side. The sauce is absolutely delicious and it's not overpowered by a bunch of fruit or anything. They took such good care of us both with a sit down and take out order at the same time. With take out food being de rigueur these days, Kenji's was hiding in plain sight near the corner of Peckham and Spring. Getting 'local style' food in Reno is becoming more common, but Kenji's has already rolled the Aloha into its food and service. I ordered online and my meal was ready before I got there. Service was wonderful and the owners are actually related to folks we know back on Maui! The spicy tofu stir fry gives you a delightful mix of veggies with firm and spicy tofu. You get rice (yum) and a side (like mac salad or coleslaw.) Check out the menu in the pictures. Tried this place for the first time after hearing the numerous good reviews from co-workers. I decided to try the Hawaiian chicken and rice plate. The chicken was alittle dry but did have a very good taste to it. They give way too much plain white rice with the plate which ended up going to waste. The macaroni Salad I didn't care for it was too strong and just had an off taste. Their pricing is high for the quality and I couldn't bring myself to ever try them again unfortunately. read more
