So I'm having a casual discussion with a co-worker about food (what else is new!) and he mentions he's in the mood for a burger. Since the burger options near work a nothing to write home about (at least the places I've tried), he says the BEST burgers he knows about are at a place called Kelly's in Rye. I say, "Let's go after work" and here we are. A real neighborhood, hole in the wall, dive bar. Looks like the patrons are all locals, maybe a softball team and then there's us. I peruse the burger list, opt for Jerry's BEC Burger and sip my beer waiting. A few short minutes later and OMG! This could be the best burger in years. Certainly top 3. This is a burger, pub food and beer place. It is small, this bar is to the point and has a great bartender. Local dive bar that doesn't explain what or who it is. My whole group tried the burgers and loved them, I had the quesadilla. Only con for me is I wish I was asked them what I wanted in it because it just had cheese when it came out, I like it filled with veggies. This place used to be good, quality control went down the drain in the last year. They either overcook ur burger or make it so raw it's falling apart. The onion rings are basically half of the onion fried, no care for thin slices, all around a bad experience. Not a fancy place, it's in a basement of a house! Menu is on a chalkboard, the place is small, the tables could be more comfortable, but, I believe these things make the place so special. I am giving the 5 stars for their burger... perfect! One of the bests, I've ever had, and I am very demanding in regards to burgers! I've been there several times, and I was never disappointed! Cute little neighborhood spot with decent prices. Worked in the area 2.5 yrs and never knew this was here until recently. It is one of my coworkers new favorite spots so a bunch of us went for lunch. Ambiance leaves a little to be desired but isn't terrible - very "home"-y. That makes sense because it is literally in the basement of a home! Service was pretty quick and attentive - no menus, it is written on a chalkboard on the wall. Food was good - burger was huge and cooked medium rare how I asked for it. Bun was a little overwhelming. Onion rings were awesome, def get an order for the table to share! Beers were about 4-4.50/ea which isn't bad! A welcome change and much less pretentious than Rye Grill & Bar. read more

This review is based solely off customer service/ambiance. My husband and I went in at 2 pm on a Friday after reading the good reviews online, and stood there waiting to be seated. And stood there....and....stood there. The bar was full of older men and nobody acknowledged us although several looked over at us, but the bartender was too busy, I guess. Weren't sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves, so we walked out. 2 booths (of about 5) were occupied and the place was so dark and dingy that I didn't mind walking out. Old school is one thing, shabby and rude is another. I guess they're only friendly if you're at the bar or if you're a regular. read more

Just stopped in for lunch. Had a corned beef sandwich, and a Jameson's on the rocks. Why do I mention that my drink was on the rocks, you ask? Because this local, neighborhood dive, not only charged me $9 for a Jameson's, but added a $2 charge for the ice. As for the corned beef sandwich, they should change the menu and call it a fat & gristle sandwich, as there was little actual corned beef to be found, but the greasy fat was in abundance. The worst eating experience in my entire life!! Admittedly the food is not bad but if you want your burger served with a side of right wing politics this is your place. We overlooked the huge sign outside that said "help joe the plumber," because the reviews on this site about the burgers were great. However once we stepped inside my wife who is Latina was greeted with unfriendly stares from the bar patrons and bartender (whom I guess is the owner) which persisted the entire time we sat in the restaurant. If you are white and in particular working class Irish I'm sure this is the place to go, but be warned should you have even the slightest bit of melatonin DO NOT SET FOOT IN HERE. There is nothing friendly about this hole, the burgers are not the best by any stretch, the food is good and the prices are cheap. And if you can bare the racists at and behind the bar then you might be able to actually enjoy the food. But all in all I have never in my entire life been to such a blatantly racist establishment, I'll never go back. read more

If my review were based just on my meal it would have gotten 1 star. The clams were chewy, the red sauce salty enough to salinate a lake and the pasta tough and overlooked. Totally inedible. However, the burgers ordered by the other 2 members of our party were tasty enough to warrant 4 stars so I'm averaging up to a 3. The fries both looked and felt (texture) perfect but in the end were tasteless. The onion rings were better but we couldn't taste onion so based our approval on the crunchiness. We stumbled on it while en route and would have gone elsewhere after reading reviews but husband needed a beer, burger and bathroom after long day. It was filled with locals and seemed like a great place to hang out. If you confine yourself to drinks and burgers you'll enjoy this place. Otherwise, keep driving. BTW, service was very good. I gotta say: "this place is amazing"!!!!! I've been to Ireland and this was about as close as you can get to an Irish pub. The fish and chips are awesome! We drive up to the place and my wife said "just keep going" I said " trust me, this place will be good". As soon as we stepped in the door I knew it was going to be great. The bar keep offered us tasters of what was on tap. Got there just before the crowd. But as soon as the crowd thickened i knew this was just like Ireland. If you are looking for a quiet, fancy and expensive meal, Kelly's is NOT the place for you. The bar in this small restaurant is about the same size as the dining area. It gets a little noise at times by the patrons watching what ever sport is in season. But the waitstaff is polite and attentive. Its a true dive but a great one. The seating is kinda tight and you get close to your neighbors. What makes this place is the burgers they are the best - my son is a burger connoisseur and this is his favorite. He always swore that Tieran's in Stamford was the best but after eating here once he was sold. I always get the steamers to start which are awesome better than most high end seafood restaurants. The wings are also great just the right amount of kick. My wife and daughter aren't big fans due to the decor but the food totally rocks and the beer is ice cold. Kelly's offers solid pub food and is a good place to stop for an easy meal. We were all in the mood for burgers so everyone at our table ended up ordering a burger and fries. I had a bacon cheeseburger with sauteed onions and was pleased when it arrived very quickly. The only person who was displeased was a friend who ordered chili on his burger because the serving size was underwhelming. Speaking of small, the tables are packed very close together so you may have a little trouble sliding in and out because there isn't much space between the table and bench. read more
