This place is local and great, old-style diner food and I'd been meaning to get there for awhile. This place is so old-school they don't even take credit cards only cash.I had a simple breakfast sandwich today with home fries and a Diet Coke. Delicious. The waitresses are nice and prompt and getting called "sweetie" just makes it that much more homey. Prices are good too, I only paid $9 for my meal and I was stuffed by the end. I can now see why the lines are so long for this place on the week-ends, but I can now say I think it's worth it. read more

I had really high hopes for today's brunch. Heard about this place on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives as well as some locals when we moved here. I've seen the chilly crowds of people jammed into the vestibule here early afternoon so we decided 1 would be a good time to head over...SCORE! No Line! We take a quick peek at the Specials Board and I am torn between Peach Raspberry Pancakes and Strawberry Mango Stuffed French Toast. My boyfriend, however, was in a lunch mood and was torn between the Reuben and the Monte Cristo. I wish I could tell you what the caliber of food was. After being seated and given some terrible coffee, the waitress came back and the following scenario transpired: Me: I'll have the Peach Raspberry Pancakes. Waitress: We are out of peaches. They should have taken that off the board. Me: ... Ok, well I'll have the Strawberry Mango Stuffed French Toast. Waitress: We are out of Mangoes, too. Me: Okay, let me take another look at the menu. With out a word she turns and leaves. However, I am given no more than 40 seconds before she reappears asking what we want. This time my boyfriend leads with his order of the Reuben. Waitress: We don't do lunch on Sunday. Poor, starving boyfriend: Oh, okay, well then I'll need a few minutes to decide. Again, she turns without a word/ We think of leaving but my boyfriend, who was extremely hungry, says he can just order a breakfast food. Luckily he decides quickly, because our waitress reappears in less than 40 seconds. Me: Okay, I'll just do Strawberry pancakes. Waitress (yelling to near by waitress): DO WE HAVE STRAWBERRIES? While she bellows across the small diner, I mouth 'let's go' to my boyfriend. Waitress: We don't have strawberries either. Me and my last nerve: Okay, I think we'll just stick with the coffee and that's it. Waitress: Alright, well if you're not eating, can you move to the counter, instead? Okay, I understand you run out of things. But why didn't she LIST those things the first time before I ran through half the freakin' menu? And we can't order lunch because you only do Breakfast...but you're out of all of the fruit that goes on the breakfast food? And since I don't want to eat your food that you DO have, I need to get up and move? No. We left, headed to Ball Square Cafe where we received incredible service and unbelievable fresh food, which is par for the course there. read more

After helping a friend out in Charlestown we headed to Soundbites for a late breakfast and found a line out the door. Not knowing the area we turned around and somehow came across an empty spot in front of Kelly's Diner, and thank god we did. As I walked though about 6-8 people waiting we found two spots at the counter and had no wait. Seemed like the stars were aligned to stuff our hungry faces I got the 4 egg western omelette, home fries and bacon. One of the finest omelettes I've ever had. Wow!! The coffee was always hot and the Refills came on point. The ladies behind the counter and waiting tables seem like they've been there for some years now and offered a unique rapport with the customers. They were all great! I came in on a Sunday a week or two ago, excited to get a grilled cheese. I was at first sad to see that they only had brunch on Sundays, but I mentioned to my friends that I was really only sad about not being able to get a pickle with my eggs and bacon. I ordered two breakfast sandwiches this morning for pick up. Bacon egg and cheese on wheat toasted, easy right? Boy, did I get disappointed. First of all they were so small I could not believe it!! Second, the cheese was non existent and there was barely any bacon on both. So as you can imagine, I basically got a piece of toast with an egg on it. Very dry and flavorless. Price, $10. Go here, food is awesome, service fun, love all the ladies and of course the hardworking busser. They don't fuss here, they just get the job done. At lunch I always go for the turkey club, it's perfect and they roast their own turkey breast. My dad loves to walk here early in the morning when he visits. This is classic American diner food. Which is exactly why I don't like it. The whole point of road-side diners is to provide quick, cheap, simple food, when you pull off the highway, en route to some other destination where you can get better food. These days there's a widespread nostalgia for that experience, and so urbanites who could go to a real restaurant find themselves at a diner instead. But it doesn't make sense to leave your apartment and go to Kelly's Diner when anybody with a stove and a skillet could easily make this food at home. Which would be cheaper, healthier and probably taste better. I must admit that the diner fare at Kelly's is better than the average, and the prices are reasonable. But still, there's not a single green vegetable or fresh fruit on the premises. My mushroom omelette had canned mushrooms and was overcooked. The hash browns were flavorless starch. I got toast drenched in butter, and I didn't even have any of those single-serving tubs of jam where I was sitting. The only saving grace: a bottle of Tabasco sauce on every table. If you want a step up, go around the corner to Sound Bites or Ball Square Cafe, where you will find fresh fruit and veggies, as well as some great vegetarian options, such as home-made veggie sausage. If you're really into that 1950s diner nostalgia, go to Friendly Toast, where the menu has a lot more imagination and variety, and the food is a little tastier than Kelly's. Or better yet, go to Highland Kitchen, where you can get an amazing brunch, with interesting regional flavor (that of the South) and dishes like hush puppies that you might not make at home. read more

What has happened to Kelly's? Have eaten there many times, but last two visits were the worst. On one occassion brought a friend from out-of-state only to be told that one side was closed. Other side was full, but we were denied a seat, went to Sound Bites. After many months, tried again. They close at 3:00, arrived at 2:40 and (same waitress ) standing at the door announced "we close in 10 minutes" So, reader, does that sound like "we don't want your business" When I pointed out the real time, she began shouting. I don't want Conan the Waitress bringing me my food. In 20 years in the restaurant business, never once denied a customer a seat, or had to yell at a customer. I arrived at Kelly's after meandering down Broadway and finding the line for Ball Square Cafe to be a bit too long for my growling stomach. From the previous reviews on Yelp, I had an idea about what to expect. The wait here was about two minutes, which I greatly appreciated. The bottomless coffee ($1.99) appeared at my table fairly quickly in the warm ceramic mug; it's a decent brew that hits the spot. I glanced over at my neighbor's table, where they were being served ginormous omelettes, toast slathered with butter, and massive portions of home fries. While I was hungry, I knew I'd never be able to finish a plate that full. I opted instead for the French toast. I can't say that it was the best French toast I've ever had; it was a bit dry and too eggy, but it was better than the French toast that came out of my mother's kitchen. My dining partner opted for the bacon omelette, which was also decent, if perhaps a bit overcooked. The waiters are friendly and on top of the tables, for the most part; it felt like we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for our food, but then again, our cups were never empty. Kelly's is your typical diner; the fare is good, but if I have the option of getting into Ball Square within half an hour or going straight into Kelly's, I'll go ahead and wait for Ball Square. read more

Go during a weekday-- otherwise, you may as well go to McDonald's. When it's slow, the food is fantastic. When it's the weekend and packed, the food is usually borderline disgusting. I'd give it 4 stars if it could be just a bit more consistent. read more

When we arrived at Kelly's we waited outside in the snow and rain for 20 minutes before before getting into its tiny waiting area. For most local places, this is a good sign of some great food. Once we did get inside we waited about another half an hour to be seated and we were a party of two. We were seated at the bar, no big deal, but it was a lousy day and nowhere to hang our coats, so we had to put them at our feet. The barstool I was seated upon was not secured to the floor so I had to sit very, very still otherwise it wobbled all about and thought I was going to fall over. We picked Kelly's because we heard the food was amazing, a gem middle of the city. I had the apple pancakes, and they were okay. Most apple pancakes I have had shred the apples so they're not obtrusive. These were in large chunks. It wasn't terrible, but it was a little offputting. For the pancakes themselves , they were almost tasteless. Good thing for syrup. We also ordered a side of bacon, which came with three tiny pieces of bacon for four dollars. Not exactly a deal. The thing that bothered me the most, was the service. Hot drinks came fast, but when we asked for milk and water we had to ask multiple times to get it, and she kept trying to charge us over and over again even though she didn't give us the drinks. This wasn't an experience only us, as the people sitting next to us and the people sitting next to them had a hard time getting her to give them things such as the bill and their drinks, and she kept bringing the wrong things to wrong people. She looked like a seasoned person, so I think she was just overwhelmed. Nonetheless, if she just slowed down a little bit and gave a little bit better service, maybe was a little bit friendlier and didn't try to argue about the receipts, it would've been a better experience. Definitely a classic old diner environment, which I'm a fan of. Our waitress, Betsy, was a sweetheart and very attentive! No complaints about the food and the prices are more than fair. I ordered the kelly super but asked if I could substitute the meat with an extra egg. She gave me two extra eggs instead which I thought was sweet. Adding blueberries to my pancakes only cost 50 cents extra which is totally worth it, they were very fluffy and delicious. My friend ordered the mushroom, onion, and pepper omelet which was humongous, he didn't finish the whole thing. Will definitely eat here again next time we're in the area! read more

My favorite breakfast spot in Ball Square, hands down. I love the saucy wait staff, and I love the #7 breakfast, possibly the best deal in town. Authentic diner atmosphere, and never a disappointment. A consistent go-to; someday I'll actually try something else on the menu, because the pancakes, for just one example, have been fabulous on the rare occasion that I deviate from the usual order. read more

Don't go if you are by yourself. Even though I went at 7:45 a.m. on a Sunday morning, and there were at least 6 booths empty, the waitress would not let me sit at one! I could only sit at the counter. I've gone to this restaurant for over 30 years - and I won't be back. She is waiting for the crowd to get out of Mass. I was never so humiliated in my entire life. So HUMILIATED HUMILIATED The blonde waiter didnt want to work that day, or she hates her boss and want to make him lose money. She treated me like i was a homeless person. She almost made me cry in front of everybody. Im always shy, but polite. I didnt do anything to her. She didnt hand me the food, she threw the food at me in manner that it echoed. She gve me my sandwich and said: ''here is your free english muffin.'' i paid for my sandwich. She didn give me anything for free. I was so polite to her and she was extremely rude. And when i told her that, she laughed . This place is a gem. We come here for breakfast almost every week. You get large portions for cheap (eggs, homefries, toast, bacon and pancakes for $6!) The food is fresh and tasty, and the coffee wakes you up. Their one downfall is the homefries, a big mushy mess. Skip them and fill up on their other creations. My bf loves the eggs benedict, served only on Sundays. The waitstaff is really friendly, and go out of their way to satisfy (ie: always get me a cup of coffee to go after paying the check). The busboy who works every weekend and seats you works so hard i want to give him a hug and put him in my pocket! I like this spot better than Soundbites because at Soundbites I always feel rushed and cramped. At Kelly's, I can read the paper and drink my coffee in a leisurely fashion. A line can build up outside on weekends, but do not dismay.....the line moves fast...really!! And you can always sit at the counter. As for some of the previous negative reviews, if you want healthy, a diner will never be the right choice!! Kelly's serves diner fare right, and i like it damnit!! read more

I had to run errands in the neighbourhood so I decided to have breakfast at this diner because I love these type of establishments. The decorations are kitchy and fun. The place was clean, spotless really, and well appointed. Even tho the place was nearly empty I chose to sit at a small table instead of one of the very inviting booths because it was just me. I ordered a coffee and an OJ. The servers were nice and had that obligatory "What'll it be, hon?" quaintness about them. I ordered the #1 with raisin toast. It came out in good time and I was offered jelly and hot sauce. It always drives me crazy when my coffee cup is filled w/o asking because I've gotten the cream & sugar just right, but I didn't say anything because she was nice and it's my thing, not hers. Half way in to my eggs I notice one egg is nearly raw. A properly cooked sunny-side up can be tricky but not impossible. Before this I had noticed the hash browns were a bit cool and the bacon and toast were burnt. Something I wasn't going to complain about because I was eating it. I sent the egg back and was given a whole new plate. The eggs were done impeccably. Why it couldn't've come out like that in the 1st place is confusing. Then I got the bill. $12.98 for a $7.49 breakfast, coffee & an OJ. I didn't understand $5.49 for a cup of coffee and an OJ so I looked at the menu. Coffee was 1.99 and there were 2 sizes of OJ. I was given the small but charged for the large. I asked the server to explain it to me. She said the price of coffee had changed last year and she had given me the 12 oz. OJ. I didn't get to even mention the fact that she had never offered me a choice of sizes when she started to shriek and trot out the smaller size, which was obviously only 6 oz. I tried to tell her that I was complaining about the price because it was false advertising but she took it personally and said to me: "I'll just comp it coz that's all you were looking for in the first place." I ate half of my breakfast and was prepared to pay for it but after that no one came to my table to say it had been comped or to let me know I'm full of it or anything. I'm not sure why I left money on the table, I thought the whole thing could have been handled better and I would have paid for my meal but, whatever. Later in the day, when I knew the lunch rush would be over I called to complain about my experience. A woman who seemed to resent her position took the call. I explained the situation and as it turns out she was the woman I heard my server complain to about me. Instead of listening to me she told me she saw the whole thing happen and I was in the wrong. She brought up the OJ so I told her I had done an experiment to make sure I wasn't being ridiculous. I took the same size glass and poured 8 oz of liquid in. I told her I know what 12oz. of liquid looks like and that was not it. That is not even the point. The point is I was confused about the prices and until I got a bad attitude from the waitress I wasn't even going to complain about the meal except for the raw egg. It makes me think these waitresses have to deal with incompetence from the MGMT and get to hear it from the customers and I just simply hit a nerve. I saw my waitress pour decaf into the regular pot. I don't think I would've noticed that if things had been going well. There are better places to eat on this block and if these women worked for me they would be fired after today. Or maybe not fired, but I would definitely feel the need to show them what true loyalty looks like, coz calling a customer a lying, cheating, stealing thief is not it. read more

Been going here for 5 years, the old ladies are awesome, all you have to do is NOT be a snide litte B*tch and they treat you human, which is all most people in life want.... if you've never watched ryan reynolds (da hawtness) in that movie waiting, you should because its kinda true...don't mess with people who prep your food. I'm not saying Kelly's does gross stuff, but your eggs will get over cooked if you're rude... The food isn't greasy its good old fashion BUTTER...which makes everything wonderful...just cloggs the arteries and stays for long term visits on your thighs, gut, and behind. You can ask, nicely, for them to not cook it with so much and they will. Everything on the menu is fabulous! I can't even comprehend the experience I just had. My waitress (who constantly is inattentive every time I'm there) was INTOXICATED at 11:30. I mean, all I could smell was booze. No wonder she 'misheard our order' why would we order 4 grilled cheeses when we are a table of 2 and come in at least 5 times a a week with the same order!!! (And yes, stick with something simple, because anything 'homemade' is so awful, you may have to call in sick to work. All but one of the waitresses there are RUDE and act as if they wish they were anywhere but the diner. Many times we have come in 45 minutes before closing to be hollered at 'We're closing'! And 'I'm getting out of here at 3 on the dot, so you don't have time!' After a drunk waitress refused to acknowledge her mistake and take money off the bill, I WILL never return. No wonder this place has such a reputation for awful service and the rudest of staff. I'm from Somerville, I'm used to some hardened, but this place has turned into a trash pit. Last year, the owner posted an open letter on their door blasting Ball Square Cafe and Soundbites for 'their ridiculous prices' hmmm..
