    Raw uncooked ground beef burger
    Christine W.

It's a LONG one so get ready. First, if I could give no stars, I ABSOLUTELY would. We came to this place for Father's Day brunch, the place was empty. Which is not a problem. The problem started almost immediately and escalated quickly and throughout the entire duration of our "meal". The bartender/server/acting manager/dishwasher, he was the only one working besides the cooks apparently .. he approached us, took our drink orders, got them wrong, Dr. Pepper was flat. Which, is fair to say because he did warn us, and appreciated, but every other drink was incorrect. Then, we asked some questions about the menu, ordered based off the information given. Except, he failed to mention that the impossible burger, which is originally what the boyfriend wanted was in fact unavailable, and that it had been for at least a year.... So that was nice, after looking at this giant menu that is literally falling apart and taped together with the hopes and dreams of whoever owns this disaster. Our appetizer (jalapeño poppers) must have been cooked in the same grease from 1990, they have not changed their oil in a millennia apparently. We ordered mozzarella sticks with the other appetizer and did not receive that. We asked 3 times and kept being told "it's coming". They in fact did not come until the end of our meal. The entrees started coming out, and, unfortunately it gets worse.. Mine came first, I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo, which they claim was house made sauce, it was not. Mine of all the meals was the most decent. I might add, we were a party of 6. My boyfriend ordered a hamburger "Hawaiian style" and requested an over medium egg in the burger. His daughter ordered a Chicken Bacon Ranch Burger and "cheese fries". Another order of a Chicken Sandwich was ordered with "cheese fries, add bacon pieces on top". A Kayak Burger was also ordered. Chicken Tenders for the kid. The hamburgers came out raw, not cooked in places. The Hawaiian burger that the egg was requested came out, no egg and when sent back for the egg to be put on, it took 20 minutes for it to come back and that was after we waited and then finally asked for it. It came back out raw in spots, the egg was cooked and not runny as requested, as well as cold. The chicken sandwiches were so over breaded they were almost inedible. The bacon pieces that topped one of the cheese fries was cooked to a literal burnt crisp.. we asked for a replacement for some softer bacon pieces. They came out almost right away uncooked and on a side plate, whole. The other order of cheese fry that was ordered along with the bacon disaster fry, was covered in some sort of "cheese" that looked like play-dough, nothing resembling cheesy goodness. We stopped the man of the restaurant that was just behind the bar making some sort of drink. Told him our scathing list of issues and he really didn't seem to be too enthusiastic to help, until we mentioned it was not him we were unimpressed with. He took two meals off, before he came to take our food I was able to capture the pictures of whatever they had tried to feed to us. We paid whatever portion was left and of course asked if there was any sort of management available, there of course was not. So consumer be aware. I wouldn't eat here and we let anyone know that was coming, going, or near this place know to not eat here. As they may get sick from the improper handling of food and carelessness of making your meal.

The space felt immediately understaffed as soon as we walked in with exasperated staff and unbussed table everywhere. I got the steak and eggs plate, ordered it medium, and sadly it was just so bad. Steak was dry as a bone and tasted not fresh, like it had been sitting a while in the fridge. And the rice was completely dried out and crunchy I couldn't even chew it. Totally not worth the money. Sorry.

Love their breakfast and can't beat $10.99 restaurant vibe was pretty cool too!

$10.99 Breakfast special, best price in Waikiki and lots of easy free parking Went here with my friend for breakfast, great hidden gem in Waikiki!

Have not gone in for brunch yet, but this is next on our list for Waikiki location, especially if you can't get into Aloha kitchen around the corner. This is another great spot that is super friendly lots of seating. Can't wait to give this one a try and finish the review.

Every single vacation is going to have some highs and some lows. You hope to keep the lows to a minimum and ride the high moments, without a doubt. Walking into the Kayak Cafe & dining was by far the low point of my weeklong stay in Honolulu/Waikiki. First of all, the menu presented to us at the door and by staff included many items they claimed were unavailable. French Toast on the menu, but unavailable? Broccolini Pasta on the menu, but unavailable? Strange to bring out menus with items you don't actually want people to attempt ordering? Right? They also claimed to have a beer special going on when you ordered food, $3.00 for Stella Artois drafts is a great deal -- we'd done a ton of walking and wanted food pick-me ups and drinks before we walked some more... except they brought me Bud Lite and claimed it was Stella. I can tell the skunkiness difference. I've worked in a bar. Additionally, soda syrups get low and need to be changed.. we also ordered a Coke with our food and it was (pictured) just soda water with cola color added. No flavor left. Again, I've worked in a bar and know what it looks like when it needs changing. I asked for a fresh one, and it took almost 10 minutes for them to bring back a new Coke glass... with it unchanged. Still a nearly see-through soda class with the faintest hit of cola taste, but 99% soda water taste. How? How is it possible to fail this badly across so many fronts on a main boulevard for walking and commerce in a tourist destination? I will not even dig on the service because it was also bad, but if I had to guess based on how many people we saw, they were severely understaffed for the day. Lastly, when I asked for the check, they seemed to have no clue what that meant and directed me to the front door to pay at the counter. Very bizarre, all said. If I could give zero stars, I would. Waste of time & money, avoid the Kayak Cafe.

Kayak our way to Kayak Cafe.

Kayak ourselves to Kayak Cafe. We started our day with a morning breakfast at Kayak Cafe. It's located in the same building as Kan Sushi. Parking is FREE. Yup, it's not easy to find parking around Waikiki and not have to pay!! We walked down from the parking garage and walked into the restaurant. The restaurant is also split between Kan Sushi and Kayak Cafe. We were greeted by two staffs and were told to find a table. We chose a table with the city view. It was a nice and quite morning He got Kayak Morning Plate with Crispy Bacon, Portuguese Sausage, Scrambled Eggs and Fried Rice. It's plated on a nice paddle like plate in black. He paired his with affogato. The affogato is a hot espresso poured over a vanilla ice cream. It's a bit too bitter for me so I'd like two more scoops of vanilla ice cream to give a sweeter taste! ;) For me, I got their Meat Lovers Omelette with Country Potatoes. The potatoes had a nice flavor with a teeny bit of kick of spice to it. The omelette had lots of meats! The Rocky Road Latte was sweet but could have been topped with marshmallows ;) I think that would have added a nice touch to it. Overall, the cafe is cute and a perfect place for breakfast. The place provided a peaceful atmosphere to enjoy your breakfast with a family or friends or both! Our server was William and this other guy but we didn't get his name. Both were amazing with friendly smile and love that they both were taking turns to check in on us. Thank you for reading my review. Have a great weekend!

Biscuits and gravy, Wagyu Loco Moco

My Fiance and I decided to check out Kayak cafe after seeing OnFireHawaii's review on Instagram. We also looked up reviews on here and saw that it had a few negative reviews mostly dealing with bad customer service. For us the food was good and the customer service was sub par, but it mostly had to do with one of the employees. Right off the back as we walked in one of the employees who we think was the bald manager/shift lead with out greeting us told us it's gonna be a 10 min wait and walked off, immediately after another employee walked up to us and told us he had a table ready, the restaurant was pretty empty too so we were surprised when we were told we were gonna have to wait. Our waiter was named Devin I believe and he was very nice and attentive, if anything he made the experience worth it and kept us from leaving. He took our order and we waited about 15 mins for our food. It's worth mentioning that a whole table next to us ended up leaving before they even got their meal since they were waiting for so long, they were also told that they were out of steak after they had already put their order in. Their waiter was also the bal manager/shift lead and wasn't giving them the most friendly tone. We ordered the biscuits and gravy with link sausage and the wagyu Loco moco. The biscuits and gravy was great and had amazing flavor, paired with the sausage it was awesome. The wagyu loco moco was okay, the patty was pretty dry but overall the meal wasn't too bad. One last thing we noticed, Devin was speaking to another table and asking them a few questions about their day, the bald manager/shift lead then came and scolded him and told him to get back to work. I understand they were pretty busy but the restaurant wasn't even that packed. Employee's like Devin are what keep people going back to your establishment, and it just shows what kind of establishment the manager wants to run when you see something like that. So over all the energy/atmosphere in the restaurant was pretty tense and unwelcoming, mostly of the bald manager/ shift leads doing. I don't think we'd be returning anytime soon to eat at Kayak Cafe, if anything I'd probably get my biscuits and gravy to go in the future. Devin if you're reading this you are the real MVP!

This was an amazing place for us to eat breakfast. Thefoos and service were great. The manager Kazu was very helpful. Mahalo!

Great service, great food selection, and great price! The manager was quite helpful in seating our group of 18, and fed us quickly!

    Loco Moco
    Connie G.

We stopped in for a loco moco-super disappointed. They ran out of wagyu beef patties-which was fine, but the substitute patty was freezer burnt and lacked any flavor. My husband & I were 2 of 3 customers and we still didn't get an opportunity to refill our drinks. I'm disappointed to have tried this place out, but at least I know now. My opinion-go somewhere else...

Every single item on the food and drink menu is crafted with such robust flavor with so much dimension in each bite. The drink menu is unique, I had a cocktail I can't remember the name of it but it had plum something and was created by one of the servers there. So cool to see employees own work on the menu, he shared with us how hard and long he worked on the craft cocktail to make it perfect. Now this is a bartender! Would definitely recommend making a reservation, unless it's just you and maybe one other than the bar is mostly open seating I think. I got lucky and walked in on a Sunday night and there happened to be two open seats at the bar which i hear is unheard of due to the popularity that is this restaurant. I sampled my friend's fish dish and this was delicious and I think I liked it better than what I got. I wish that the side that they used for the carbs wasn't potatoes and maybe a rice option? They brought some sort of fried fish ball that had a pretty good spicy tartar sauce that everyone on our table was fighting over. Overall, I think the food wasn't something I would come back for, but the service was astounding - especially when someone on our table did not like the drink they ordered - our waitress offered to take it back and serve her another drink that she hopefully liked. Ambiance is very posh and dim - yet casual at the same time. We came at a lunch hour so not too fancy, I can imagine people getting dressed up fancy to go here at night though.

The batter was light and crispy with great flavors and had a yummy sauce drizzled on top. It also came with a scoop of rice, buttered corn, and Mac salad. Mac salad was delicious! Prime rib sandwich came with salad and au jus sauce and a side of salad. It's good but also very filling. I didn't try the burger or teriyaki chicken but was told both were delicious. Might've just been an off day or a matter of personal taste, but I'd skip it next time.

It was so sad this business is closing down by Oct 31st. With rising food costs, inflation and…read morestaffing, it's understandable but I wish best endeavors for Chef Jason Peel and his staff. My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We had multiple dishes, but staff made Kauai prawns and tomato miso black cod dishes on the house since they ran out the Hokkaido scallops. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version. If you have a chance to dine here before closing and got a reservation, definitely will have a lovely dining experience and your stomach will be full by end of the night.

The staff were friendly and very helpful with giving us recommendations. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 entrees, and honestly it was too much food for us. We had leftovers for breakfast the next day! - For appetizers we got: Ulu Tots, Japanese Eggplant, and Corn Beignets. The Corn Beignets was the best. - For entree we got: Tomato Miso Black Cod and the Short Rib. Both were delicious and worth a try. Sad to see that this restaurant appears to be closing.
