Regular for over two years. I love the place and people still, but often times I wait upwards of 20 minutes to be acknowledged. Especially during times of needing to grab and go, atleast the management saying 'we'll be with you in a moment' or going to grab the kavatender preparing product would be appreciated. I mean no negativity, this is an honest review of an establishment I frequent at. They lack proper service and the common sense surrounding being in the service industry, but I suppose they make up for it in the kavatenders' wonderful personalities. read more

Interesting first experience with Kava! We ended up just ordering it instead of going in person to get it. Our drinks were ready quick. We got two different drinks, one we got a mango flavor, the other was strawberry. The strawberry one tasted kinda like children's medicine. The mango one was a little more earthy with a splash of mango. It was interesting! Made our mouths go numb haha. Not sure if I'd get anything from here again but I'm glad that we tried it! read more

Finally was able to stop by and try some tea. Upon entering, the place is pretty dark and has a bar feel. I wouldn't say divey but not upscale either. I will mention that these kind of places are intimidating especially since I'm new to the Kava world. The space to order was over someone's should - which felt very uncomfortable. I attempted to order what I thought was a drink and was excited until I was handed what looked like just a couple of shots of powder in a cup and was told $11. The amount of anxiety I felt coming and just trying to order a drink and to end up with what I walked out with - I will never come back to this place. Try the kava bar in down town Phoenix. I went to Kava Sutra Bar yesterday (Saturday night) from 4:30 PM to 2 AM (nine and a half hours). The lighting was subdued. There was a chess set on the bar, as well as a no-cost tabletop arcade game. The unisex bathroom was clean. The bartender was eager to educate customers on the pluses and minuses of kava kava. They also had kratom beverage which was not listed on the menu. The price for a basic kava drink was $5. Many variations and combinations are available including Red Bull for those so inclined. My drink came with a wedge of pineapple which is helpful for those with sensitive tastes as kava is often kindly described as tasting "earthy". The effect of four or so "shells" of kava drink was mild. read more

As a female, minority who has experienced police brutality and was looking for a new, consistent study spot -- this place just lost my business. I drove 35 mins to be here and I intended coming multiple times a week until the end of grad school. I have a great group of local friends. I won't be back. Based on what I spent at my last study spot, Owner, you just lost about 10 to 25 thousand... That being said, they have a **great product** and the decorations are indeed nice. The staff is friendly. I've been here for a little bit and I notice that the only customers aside from myself have been white males. At the time of writing this (late March 2020) , if you look at the reviews, they also appear to be largely white males (with some females). When the hostess politely told me the wifi password she spelled it out because she hesitated to say the phrase to me. Why would the owner make their public wifi that? I asked her to repeat it because I couldn't believe it. I immediately felt that I just don't belong here. Then I get it: That was the INTENT of the password. You wanted to tell me, you wanted to make sure that I understood, you wanted to make it exceptionally clear that I heard "You don't belong here." OWNER: You knowingly used a decisive republican political slogan to alienate part of your potential customer base. I'm so disappointed and hurt. I'm sure you don't care too much about that either because you KNEW that when you set that wifi password. Owner, your message was recieved. Thanks for letting me know. I'll let everyone else know for you. ------Bottom Line ------ MAGA SUPPORTERS ( those that don't care about politics): This place is for you. You'll feel right at home here. EVERYONE ELSE: Minorities in a pro republican and pro-gun state, feminists, democrats, internationals, anyone who has been affected by Black Lives Matter, and obviously Anti-Trump supporters: This place likely isn't for you! Ok so I dropped by recently to see what the fuss is about. The place is clean. The decor is fine. I found the service to be slow and my group of friends were ignored. I think if we had been regulars we likely would've gotten better service. I also think that if we had all been white guys we would've gathered better service. The truth is that the owner of this company just doesn't care. I feel bad for the employees who have to work for such a callous, discriminating type of person. I really wanted to love this place, but when I first walked in the place smelled of smoke. (Major turnoff, if I wanted to smell smoke I would have gone to a bar/pool hall.) Second, the atmosphere leaves much to be desired- it lacks much of an ambience and the bathroom had a Beavis and Butthead picture. I felt like this place was onto something. I love the idea of getting away from the bar scene with a "healthier" alternative, but the smoke smell, and decor was a major turnoff. I did feel relaxed after my Kava shot, so I might go back to get it to-go; but it's very off putting when you are paying $10.00 for a small shot of Kava. They need to decide if they are going for health conscience clientele or just an alternative to a bar. This place could be Good, if they got rid of the smoking and worked on decorating/decor, played some music, did special lighting and focused on ambience. read more

I had Kava for the first time last night and it was a really pleasant experience. The two staff working were super friendly and really knowledgeable about Kava. The taste is quite earthy, which I didn't mind, but they have organic syrups that you can add to flavor. They're in a soft opening phase right now so they're still putting on the finishing touches but the space was clean and nice. I hope this location takes off for them! read more

This was my first time trying Kava, but not my last. McKenzie educated my friend and me, providing great info about the various options of Kava beverages, which made it easy to make our selections. We left feeling very relaxed. Kavasutra offers a relaxing atmosphere, which added to the enjoyment. In addition to Kava, Kavasutra serves Kratom and cold filtered coffee. Very friendly bar - great patrons and great employees. I really like this place. I'm still trying to get used to the taste of kava, but I definitely like the sense of relaxation from drinking the shells. They are always out of the product & the last few times I went the staff was extremely rude. The venue is small. Sometimes they throw parties but the place is so cliquey it's not worth your time. I went here for the first time back in January. Very friendly staff and all the customers seem chaty but not nosy if that makes sense. The shells are really good although if you hangout here for a few hours the tab is just as expensive if not more than a bar tab. This is mostly a review for Nula our Kava Bar Tender and guide. She was incredibly friendly and sweet. She took so much tIme with us explaining what Kava is, its effects, benefits, and KavaSutras quality control and preparation. She chatted wIth us as we felt the effects and discussed them, and the varriuos different drinks they have and their effects and benefits. Then we talked art techniques and materials. We shared photos. She is a wonderful artist! She made the experience much more rich and enjoyable. We had the Ed and then the Special Ed shells. The effects were very noticeable so we assume its quality Kava. We had ours with a pineapple slice which went great with the 'earthy' taste of the brew. They have a happy hour also and as it's a bar are open till 2 am. $10 for a shell which for a brew we thought was steep, but an alcohol drink is about the same. Atmosphere was OK. Trying for a tropical theme kinda. Fill the walls with art (Nula!?) instead of a few paintings. Serve something edible if you want people to stay and drink. Not sure the 'head' effect we had from kava is for us but we sure would like to chat with Nula again. Thank you! read more

I've stopped in several times to get drinks to go. It's hit or miss if you feel welcome. Sometimes I have to check to make sure I'm truly not invisible. Strange especially when I'm almost positive the person working is looking directly at me every time they walk by. Anyway, if you get one of the girls in a good mood they're very informative and sweet. Other times not so much. I've also had to leave twice because nobody ever came out to ignore me, or make me a drink (One time I sat there 15 mins without a word from anyone). Sounds like customer service isn't a big priority. On a a better note the drinks are pretty good.Most of the kratom drinks are prepackaged, so its not a mixologist thing. They do add flavoring to cover the distinctive bitter kratom taste. I haven't tried the Kava yet. Maybe someday. I definitely prefer the kava bar downtown. Wish it was closer. read more

I normally don't leave reviews but I just had to. I went with my boyfriend and sat for 20 minutes waiting for someone to talk to us while the bartender just vaped in the corner. When someone did acknowledge us it was fine, but another bartender had a full blown argument with the person across from us. The drink we actually got the pink lemonade and literally made us sick which was weird since we have had kratom and kava for years. Not worth the price. We just wanted to close our tab and go after 15 minutes. The place is full of sketchy regulars and naked photos of them and trust me they're not the people you wanna see naked. After talking to a few other people around town you couldn't pay me to go back after their own horror stories. Which sucks because it's so close to my house. Honestly I'd rather drive the 40 minutes to the only other kava place in Phoenix. read more

I am a 51-year-old female who has been drinking micronized kava at home for a month or so. I've done a lot of research online, but I was really looking forward to having the kava bar experience and maybe learning more. I stopped in one afternoon and was hoping to maybe set up my laptop to get a few things done and enjoy a cuppa as I had an hour or so to kill. There were about six 20-30 somethings sitting at the bar talking in pairs. I sat at the bar and the bartender greeted me with, "Do you even know what kava is?". I told him I'd been drinking it at home, but hadn't been to a bar before. He recommended what they make for beginners and I said sure. That was about the extent of his interaction with me. He didn't even set the drink and glass of water right in front of me or make eye contact. Just put it closer to his side of the bar and slightly to my right and walked away. I was feeling extremely uncomfortable, so just thought I'd drink it and then split. Then a man about 60 walked in and sat down. The bartender made chit-chat with him. Asked "Are you allergic to pineapple? If not, I'll give you a pineapple chaser." Smiled, made eye contact, then went back to talking animatedly to the young people on the other side of me. At first, I thought maybe it was my age, but then maybe my gender+age? Did I remind him of his mother? An old teacher that he hated? I am generally a friendly person so not sure what energy I brought that made him uncomfortable talking to me. The kava itself was good, but I'm going to try a different kava bar in Central Phoenix and hope for a different experience. I won't be coming back to Kavasutra. read more

Love it here. I'm a daytime tea person, so I'll do some of my work from Kavasutra here during the day and I love it. Best Kratom in town. Btw the management here IS fair. Basic rules - treat others the way you want to be treated. There's no alcohol allowed (it's a tea bar), treat the tea-tenders with respect, don't be a douchebag or a creep, and you will have no problems. Okay guys!!! Such a chill vibe here that you just want to melt into the lounge couch or bar stool!! So, if you've never tried Kava, YOU are missing out!! Super earthy taste! Our Kava-rista/Kava-tender was amazing!!!! He spent so much time giving us the expert explanation of what it is and what it does. Down to a science that guy!!! Perfect!! After we were a bit smarter, he was even able to make excellent suggestions. As much as I'd love to say the kava shell was a dreamy tasting drink, I can not. Like I said, it's an earthy taste- and I'm not so much an earthy tasting person! So guys!! He doctored it up to be pleasant tasting even for me! We stayed a couple hours and tried a few different drinks!! Mine and my daughters favorite was the shots!!! So, so SO flippin yummy!!! Make you sure you get the Kratom to help that Kava percolate in your system! Super satisfying tea! All the drinks were good and if they weren't quite our style, he made it so it was! I can't remember his name as I suck at names but pretty sure it started with a J- Jordan?!? Ugh sorry!!! But excellent- service!!! The other patrons were young 20-30 year old group! I've never heard of Kava before coming to this little bar! CJ explained everything I needed to know before making a decision on what drink would best for me! I definitely enjoy the pineapple slice on the side. It's a bit earthy but it's natural! I enjoyed the effects of the drink, it made me feel very calm, almost euphoric, and stress free. I have pretty severe anxiety / low mood, and it really helps me just feel good. It was perfect to have during my lunch break. kind sociable bartenders.
