We have never been here before, so we decided to try it out. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. The place is absolutely adorable. We loved all the decorations and the vibe. I just wanted something light, so I ordered grits and an English muffin. My friend ordered the light breakfast. We were both happy with our meals and service. We definitely want to return to try something on the lunch menu. Only complaint is the bathroom is not in the restaurant; you have to get a key and go around to the back parking lot. I was in town for a birthday breakfast and found this little diner. Let's start with the positives. The main dishes were delicious! And the best part was the home fries. Definitely order the home fries over hash browns, they are well seasoned crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. So delicious don't skip! The garden burger was also so delicious the patty is made of like oats and mushrooms and one more ingredient that I can't remember right now but it was superb! Definitely one of the best veggie burgers I have had! Top 5 for sure. Now the reason they didn't get 5 stars. The side of fruit that I ordered and two other plates on the table came with, wasn't fresh. It looked a day or a few days old. Only the melon was decent enough to eat. Next is more of a suggestion. Katz is located behind the Police station near downtown Lancaster in a corner lot, very unassuming from the street but when you walk through the door you are taking back by a 50s style diner look and feel. As we walked in we were greeted by the friendly staff, we were seated right away, the restaurant was very busy, we walked in around 10am. Even with a full house of guests, we only waiting a few minutes to get our food. What a great experience. As soon as we were seated a very upbeat and friendly waitress shared the menus and took our drink orders. The menu has so many options, some common breakfast, lunch and Dinner style plates. We ordered the Remember the Alamo omelette, wow, great tasting green salsa pork filled omelette with cheese, served with your choice of potatoes or hashbrowns and toast, I ordered a side of bacon, this is a must try dish. My brother ordered the Big Bopper served with a giant chicken fried steak, potatoes, gravy with eggs served your way, bring an appetite it is a huge portion of food. What a fun diner! Anytime my husband and I are on a road trip, we always love to check out a local diner. This one definitely hit the spot. We split the tuna melt and Ortega burger. Both were yummy, but the Ortega burger stole the show. The meat was so flavorful and the toppings were fabulous. We also got potato salad and coleslaw. The cole slaw was a bit dry, but the potato salad was fantastic. I almost ordered another scoop. The service was friendly and the ambiance was jammed packed! Here on a Wednesday around 1:00. They do open up early and close around 2:00 p.m. It's conveniently located in downtown Lancaster. They have their own parking lot in the back. We ate there on Thursday around brunch time, I couldn't believe how busy it was ,that showed all the good signs to me .we met my son and his friends from college there and ordered mostly the big bopper special and a few other things. The food was outstanding. All the boys loved their chicken fried steaks made from scratch. The service is great. Your coffee always stays warm and full. My daughter had the chili Verde omelette and she said it was delicious and everybody really raved about how good the bacon was and the French toast not to forget We are from Tehachapi, but we will definitely come back here again. Finally, I decided to eat here after much delay and due to reviews about a good chicken fried steak being served here. I visited New Year's morning with my wife and daughter. They ordered cheese burgers, and I ordered a chicken fried steak breakfast with scrambled eggs and hashbrowns. I should have followed suit. The chicken fried steak that was served to me was soggy with grease, not crispy at all. It was more like a grease sponge. I took a bite, and the flour coating on the steak was still soft, doughy, and greasy. Steak inside was well seasoned, however. I called upon our waitress, and as I was trying to explain the problem to her, she interrupted me and said, "Fine, want me to bring you out something else?". Like, wow, calm down, lady. I don't want to ruin your New Years morning. I simply asked if she could instruct the chef to make a new one, make it crispy, and let the grease drain. When she brought back the plate, it was the same chicken fried steak I returned. The only difference was that the top of it was browned a bit more while the bottom was soggy and greasy. Basically, they put it in a hot oven in an attempt to crisp it not realizing that the hot air of an oven will only crisp (burnt in this case) the top of food because hot air rises to the roof of the oven. On closer inspection of the fried steak, it looked like they cooked it in a very shallow pan, with very little oil, hence why the bottom dough was flat as if it had been sitting, and why the top was so doughy. It also tasted like the oil hadn't been changed after every steak. There is a reason why chicken fried steaks are deep fried, as deep frying limits the time the steak has to sit in the oil while simultaneously cooking it through, making it crispy. You can't do that in a shallow pan with an amount of oil that barely covers the steak. By letting it sit in a shallow pan of oil, it just soaks in it. Upon leaving, I noticed a few other people in the restaurant had chicken fried steaks similar to mine, soggy, soaked in grease, and they didn't look happy either. After eating it, I had some of the worst nausea for 3 days, a sore upset stomach for an entire week, and frequent visits to the toilet. I won't be coming back here. The waitress was rude, but she's forgiven because she was probably stressed because she had a lot of tables to wait on. That I can get over and forgive her for it. However, I can not forgive the chef for serving a soggy, greasy dish that ruined my work week and a bad start of a new year. He should be ashamed of himself for putting that on a plate, serving it, only to get it returned, and cut corners trying to cover up his shotty cooking ability only to fail at it. The eggs and hasbrowns that came with my plate were good. My wife's cheeseburger, on the other hand, was falling apart due to the chef using OLD stale hamburger buns. I took a piece of it and rubbed it between my fingers. It was stale and old, hence why her burger was just falling apart in her hands. read more
