I went to Katy Rock Shop a few weeks ago and honestly left feeling pretty disappointed. I've been rockhounding for years and have attended multiple large mineral shows, so I'm very familiar with pricing and quality when it comes to certain minerals. A lot of the items in the shop felt way overpriced compared to what I've seen elsewhere. I also noticed a few minerals that appeared to be mislabeled. I can't say whether that was intentional or not, but it definitely caught my attention. Some of the fluorite they're selling is very low quality, especially for the price they're asking. I also looked at some of the citrine and it really looked like heat-treated amethyst that had been altered to resemble citrine. The color and appearance just didn't seem natural. If it's treated, that should be clearly disclosed. A friend of mine bought a 14-inch saw from them a while back and was told it had all the parts and was fully functional. It ended up being the worst saw he's ever purchased. The blade was unaligned and it needs a lot of work to get it running properly. For what he paid, that's pretty frustrating. On top of that, I didn't feel very comfortable in the store. I'm Hispanic, and I felt like I was being watched the entire time. Every time I turned a corner or knelt down to look at something, the cashier would reposition herself to keep me in view. It honestly made me feel like I was being suspected of stealing. I had also seen another review mentioning that staff weren't very polite, and unfortunately that matched my experience. Based on my visit, I wouldn't recommend this shop. read more

I generally enjoy coming here, but my past couple experiences have been unprofessional and uncomfortable. My boyfriend got me a surprise gift, a rock tumbler, for my birthday. At first I was very excited, until I unpacked the tumbler that night. I realized my boyfriends' 235$ gift was dirty, coated in dust, and the plug was rusted. I did not feel safe plugging it in. Even the areas where the tumbler rotated were rusted. We were very disappointed in its condition for the price he had paid. So I returned it the next day, after we had found a nearly identical model online for 110$. The return went incredibly smoothly, and the person attending me was very professional and courteous. However, the next day, I saw the owner of the Shop had texted me, which I felt was inappropriate as I had never given them my number and I had only spoken to them briefly twice. I did not like that the owner confessed that they had sold me a thirty year old machine (!) that had been quote, "sitting in a warehouse," and offered to "upgrade" me for 35 more dollars for a new machine in the box. A new machine I should have received in the first place for 235 freaking dollars. Not only that, but I was already being charged double what a new machine would cost, and now another almost 40$ on top of that for something that is a given? No thank you. I did not respond, because I was not interested in engaging with the owner. That same day I returned to the shop on unrelated business, to return a piece of gem from an entirely separate transaction I was unsatisfied with. Another very professional and courteous worker assisted me for that. She had to text the owner to see what method she could use for the refund , as I wanted my refund sent to my card. However the owner told her employee she would give a response once I had responded to her inappropriate morning message. I thought this was also inappropriate and unprofessional. I sent her a response anyway, because I didn't care enough to start an argument over a simple return. Once I responded, the owner told the employee to give me store credit. I do not appreciate that the owner pulled my personal contact number from the system when they heard I had returned the ancient and overpriced tumbler, And offering to give me what I had more than paid for for more money, and then forcing me to answer a message that should have never been sent just so I could get a refund on a completely unrelated transaction. And yes, the tumbler and gem were completely separate transactions paid for separately by two different people. I love this shop. I love the employees, who are knowledgeable and professional and know what they're doing. But I do not love my recent transactions and experiences with the shop. I will definitely take this into consideration next time I'm in the market for gems, minerals and accessories. read more

This lady doesn't know anything about rocks, gemstones, and minerals. Heck, I know more about them and I never took a geology course in my entire life. I just know from being around them all my life, researching about them, listening what my good friend, Joe from Shu's Rock Shop has told me as he is the real expert of rocks and immersing myself around them. Now this lady who sells these gem babies is just a crook that thinks pyrite costs more than moldavite.(Kinda like the people who work at Marshall's who think dyed agate is real agate, fake!) She absolutely doesn't know what she is selling--one thing says all tourmaline is the same, schorl. I guess she immediately sees the color and it and assumes that its black tourms. She changes prices on you, doesn't remember what she quoted and loves to eye-ball her non-Caucasian customers throughout their whole entire shopping experience. Which to me made my sister and me uncomfortable. Not just her, but even her Caucasian customers stare at us like a deer in the headlights moment. Let's get to the prices: back to the "thinks pyrite costs more than moldavite", this lady is out of her mind to think that. The prices do not even fit the minerals and gemstones that she is selling. I had to double check the prices and was shocked. There is no way that amethyst should cost $50 and I don't care how big it is. She acts as if it is a rare specimen, but it isn't. Get real! No quartz isn't rare and should be priced like it is. You literally can find quartz outside if you look hard enough. Same that goes for calcite, limestone, or jasper. In other words, sounds like she is ripping off good people who naturally don't know any better. Not to mention, she gave my sister and me a hard time when my sister was trying to get a refund because the owner sold my sister the wrong thing. I know a true rock hound, gem, and mineral enthusiastic when I see one and I tell you what the owner of this place isn't one. She isn't in it for the rocks, but for the money. Another thing, the shop is cramped, cluttered and tiny. The owners and the people that work for the owner aren't kind, friendly or sincere. More like a nonchalant forced and rushed fake smile just to show. "Inexperienced rock lovers who are dealers usually price the rocks based on how they look not about their value." Do yourself a favor and go to rock shops where owners know what they are selling and not just trying to sell you short. read more

Went close to closing with a handsy toddler. The owners are a couple from Argentina or Brazil? They are experienced and many items in shop they mined themselves on previous trips. The wife and I spoke a little and I thought she was very knowledgeable and friendly. She didn't follow us around but did come speak to me on items I was obviously interested in so that was nice. She wasn't put off by by handsy toddler and genuinely seemed to want me to take my time even though it was time to close. They sell reworked/refurbed rock tumblers but they seemed to be priced too high. I explained I had a trove of rocks from vacations in hill country and wanted to break or cut some in half and inquired about tools. They don't sell them but she did tell me where to find them. Better yet, she offered to have her husband cut them with the special saw they use for a decent price. I plan to go back after I've narrowed down my rock finds to the "most likely" to have crystalline formations inside. Which is hard because they all look so promising to me! read more

The shop is beautiful and taken care of, and is sectioned out in a way that it's super easy to find what you're looking for. They have fun events and great deals going on all the time! Very over priced. What they are doing is wrong. Taking advantage of customers who do not know what they are buying. Selling "refurbished" tumblers for $215 is criminal. They are garbage! If you don't know, it takes about 30 days of continuous running to tumble stones. Could be more time if they are hard or very irregular in shape. The junk they are selling will not last. Buy a new Lortone from a reputable dealer. I have an example in the attached picture. read more

Amazing rock shop! A cute little shop in old town Katy is a true hidden gem - pun intended. I walked in hoping to find some gifts for my family (a lot of geologists) and the owner was incredibly helpful and kind. They took the time to really sit down with me and asked what I was looking for and helped me find some really amazing specimens that were in my price range. I love how they had such a great variety and had a great range from inexpensive to the more valuable. When I went to write a review, because I know with Covid many small businesses are struggling, I was deeply saddened to see a few nasty reviews from a few angry users. I wish more people would take the time to write great reviews, but it seems when something doesn't go their way that is the only reason people write reviews these days. This is a nice shop. There was a lot of traffic on a Friday afternoon. Everyone working there was closely tied to the store and cared a lot about what's there. The most unique part was the room behind the curtains where you could see fluorescing rocks under a black light. I haven't seen this is a store where I could purchase them. I was interested in a septarian nodule, and the gentleman opened the glass case and took it out without me even asking. I could tell it took some effort for him to bend down and stand back up. I appreciated his enthusiasm for the specimen. They have fossils, petrified wood, large geodes, small $3 bins, and everything in between. read more

This rock shop is one of the most terriblest rock shops I've been to. I came here with my sister on our first trip to Katy, Tx. I was excited to see what's in store for us along our adventure. We decided to check out different rock & mineral shops than what we are used to. When my sister and I first walked into this establishment, we were watched like preying hawks by the owner and the other workers. Me as I am, ignored the situation and continued to walk around the store looking at all the different types of gemstones and minerals. I walked to the back room where my sister was and was approached by a worker. She told us of the sell that was going on. I later came across where the Tourmaline's was located, for my love for a type of mineral is very special to me. The area where the Tourmaline's was located was very small. There wasn't any specifics on the Tourmaline I wanted as details in name. So, I asked the cashier/owner what type of Tourmaline they had for sale. I was told by her that it was Schorl Tourmaline, Schorl is a black Tourmaline. This Tourmaline was more blue than black so, she asked another worker he too said it was Schorl. Me, thinking and feeling puzzled, trusted the shop's owners word. The first price on the Tourmaline was originally $30. I left my item with the owner to look next door at the other shop. After, I didn't find anything at that shop since it was larger specimens there. When I came back the original priced item was changed to $130. Schorl Tourmaline does not cost that much or in quartz matrix. I later took the Tourmaline to my rock shop guy located in League City. He told me that the Tourmaline I purchased from the lady was a ripoff and that it wasn't Schorl. I fact it is Indicolite Tourmaline (blue tourmaline) in reverse watermelon. Blue and pink in a quartz matrix even with a naked eye anyone could see it. He also told me that it should've cost at least $30-$50. So, later in the week. I decided to get money back. Drove back to Katy, Tx and when I arrived to the place. The lady who assisted me last time the owner. She was so nonchalant and really rude.. when I told her the identification on the Tourmaline. She told me that "well, that is my rock shop guy opinion".. that it is Indicolite not Schorl. Hmm.. such an idiot with a naked eye you can see blue not black. She almost refused to return my money on the overpriced item. She first said the refund price will be $60, but only gave me $30. I will NEVER return to this rock shop it is very unprofessional, unknowledgeable on specimens, and is just in it for the money. read more

An amazing selection of everything from crystals, gems, and minerals both in samples of either polished or raw. There are so many different selections of Jaspers, Quarts, fossils, naturally glow in the dark rocks, books on that guide and teach classification, rock art, and recently they added meteorites to their collection, museum quality pieces, and so much more. People complain about their prices, but for the high quality of what they sell it is the absolute best bang for your buck. No one brings in and sells pieces as refined and pure as these guys do or naturally raw pieces like these either. It is a collection fit for the finest of Reptiles. I give it five stars. Note: the shop is divided up into two buildings, be sure to ask the people that work there to see museum quality pieces imported right from the mines from all around the world. read more

This place is a geological toys R us!!!! Gems, minerals, fossils galore! The owners are very nice, friendly people who really know their stuff. I went in looking for a specific specimen for my boyfriend and they had it in several sizes/price ranges and helped me pick out the perfect piece. They also gave me their bussiness card with Bruce's personal email and said they could put together some stuff for my boyfriend's geology class that he teaches and they give teacher discounts. This place is amazing! There are so many specimens for every level of enthusiast. They always have great deals (especially around holidays!) and everyone is nice and helpful. In the second building they have the larger items and jewelery as well. I was helped by a super knowledgeable man named Danny and he helped me find everything I was looking for and told me all about my items (I needed help buying for a collector). They are constantly bringing in new rock specimens from all over the world, and we never know what cool minerals we will find each time we go. I'm not a gemologist or a geologist or a rock fanatic but I do know good manners and well run businesses. The Rock Shop is a delightful store with knowledgeable people eager to help. I went there looking for a piece to use in a craft project. I feel like I got the same attention as somebody with loftier objectives. Please make sure and visit the display cabinets in the "big" building. There are some truly incredible beauties there. As for pricing, I found it competitive with ebay sources and much better as I could see and touch. read more

My children and I are nature enthusiasts! We discovered this business while out running errands one day and were eager to visit. The owner is a very gracious woman and was very patient with my son. It is a neat little place if you like rocks, minerals and fossils. It was also pleasant to visit with the people who were also looking.
