I was invited to a get-together after work to celebrate one of our residents graduating to become a doctor. After a long day, I was looking forward to relaxing with a Piña Colada. When the waiter brought my drink, I immediately noticed it didn't look like a traditional Piña Colada, and after tasting it, I confirmed it certainly didn't taste like one either. I politely asked if I could exchange it for a different drink. The waiter returned and said the manager wouldn't allow an exchange but would offer me 50% off instead. I explained that I wasn't happy with the drink and simply wanted to order something else. The manager came over and explained that the menu includes a disclaimer stating the cocktails are made with soju instead of the traditional liquor. In my opinion, the waiter should have mentioned that when I ordered, especially since it significantly changes the flavor. I hadn't noticed the disclaimer--I simply ordered what I thought would be a classic Piña Colada. Unfortunately, I was still charged half the price for a drink I didn't enjoy and wasn't allowed to order a replacement. The manager emphasized that it was too expensive for the restaurant to remake drinks, which I found disappointing. I've never had an experience like this at any other restaurant. On a positive note, I ordered the Reuben sandwich with fries, and it was delicious. That was the highlight of the meal. However, the service was also lacking. Our waiter was slow and couldn't answer several of our questions without repeatedly leaving to ask someone else. Because of the poor customer service and how the drink situation was handled, I won't be returning. read more

If I lived nearby I would 100% be a regular. We came in close to opening time and the place got poppin' pretty quickly. We were warmly greeted, given the rundown, and invited to sit anywhere that we wanted. If we had more time we would have enjoyed shooting a game of pool, but we opted for a table outside on their tree-filled patio. This place is pretty massive so there are lots of options for seating. Our server was taking care of the whole area by himself and he was really hustling to make sure everyone had what they needed. We of course had to enjoy a couple of German beers, of which they had a good variety to choose from. We split a large pretzel and the sausage sampler. The pretzel was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and I was a big fan of the beer cheese sauce. For the sausage sampler, you're able to make your choice of sausages and each one that we picked was better than the last although I can't remember which they were. Delicious meal and good service. I was here with a pretty sizable group of my family on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated in the patio in the shade, so it wasn't too insufferably hot on this very sunny, warm day. Jägerschnitzel is my go-to at German restaurants and the one at Kathrin's is one of the best I've had to date. My plate was generous and the jägerschnitzel was tender, the spätzle was too, and the mushroom gravy that topped the jägerschnitzel was just so good. I cleaned my plate. I also got one of their small pretzels to start the meal and loved how soft and chewy it was, and the mustard had a good punch of spice. I thought it was cool that their pretzels are sourced from a local Bavarian factory. The only thing I wasn't a big fan of was the dressing on the green salad that comes with the jägerschnitzel. I'm really not sure what it was and can't say I've had anything else that tastes like it before, but it was strong and I was good after just a few bites. However, that wasn't enough to ruin the meal for me with as good as that jägerschnitzel was. While I was only here because I was visiting family who live in the area and recommended this place, I'd be happy to return if my family wanted to come back on a future visit. read more

This place is so quaint and homie. Feels like a restaurant where the people from a small German town would gather. The sausage platter was fantastic. The schnitzel was a bit dry but the flavor was good. The waiters were very catering and help each other out. Definitely gave me the family friendly vibe to the max. There is a game room with pool, darts, foosball, and shuffleboard. There is a party room with an upright piano. Lots of board games and children's books. I would have given 5 stars but the food is the star in my book. Def will give them another opportunity to make up that star. The kids have fun and their food was fantastic. I served in the Army in Germany back in the 1980s, and some of my favorite foods from that time were Jägerschnitzel, Brötchen, and authentic German sausages. Recently I had a craving for those flavors again, so I checked Yelp to find the nearest German restaurant--and I'm very happy to say Yelp pointed me to the right place. This restaurant isn't fancy, but honestly that's part of its charm. What matters most is the food, and it was excellent. The Jägerschnitzel with plenty of mushrooms on top really brought back memories of Germany. The sausages and bread were also very good and tasted authentic. The service was friendly, the beer was cold, and the overall experience was exactly what I was hoping for. No complaints at all. Updating my review after having eaten here 6+ times now. I love Kathrin's Biergarten for their German food. It is really by far the best and most authentic German food you'll find in the greater Sacramento area. We've tried at least half of their menu and have never once been disappointed by anything. It's all delicious. My go-to is the jagerschnitzel. It's super flavorful and moist with the mushroom gravy. My husband loves the zigeunerschnitzel, which has a more peppery, paprika sauce and is super flavorful but somewhat spicy. The schnitzel by itself can be a bit drier though still tasty, but that's not unexpected given it's basically a breaded and fried pork or chicken cutlet. You can have your choice of sides with it, the fries are really tasty and well seasoned. I enjoy the spaetzle myself the most. It also comes with roasted veggies which can vary depending on the day. The spicy Hungarian goulash was delicious but fairly spicy. If you aren't good with spicy then skip this dish. We've also tried quite a few of the sausages - either through the sampler or meal as well as a sausage sandwich. The majority are made in house, which is incredible. They are super flavorful and tasty. Can't say which is my favorite. Ask the wait staff for reccs if you aren't sure what to order. One of my best friends, who lived in Germany for a year, LOVES the currywurst which can be a polarizing option but she says it's the best she's ever had outside of Germany. The appetizers are good, pretzel with beer cheese is our go-to and very tasty. Large pretzel, but is somewhat pricey. The desserts are good as well. The Bienenstich (bee-hive cake) was really tasty and great for sharing for 3-4 people. It was sweet, but not overly so and not too dense. They serve a ton of legit German beers as well as multiple Ciders which is a huge plus. They also offer some wine options. Great place for those wanting to try a new drink out to go or to come hang out with friends. The atmosphere is casual. Most of their seating area is outdoors, where they have string lights and picnic style benches but it's very cute. They also have seating indoors but more limited. You can also opt to sit at the bar inside. There are misters and heat lamps to keep you comfy outside regardless of the weather, and they keep the inside well heated/cooled for the season. Kathrin the owner usually makes rounds to chat with guests and check on you as well, which is fun to pick her brain about her dishes, beers or sausages. She's super nice as are all of her staff. Parking is easy in the lot right out front. We've always gone on the later side 7-9pm usually and are seated without issue. Of note, if it's slow they may close up the kitchen early so if you're trying to come 9pm or later be aware they may not offer food service, but are happy to serve you a beer still. Will happily continue to frequent and recommend this restaurant to friends and family! read more

Unfortunately, we have to leave a poor review this time. We are from Germany so we have a certain expectation of the food and when we ate here a few years ago, it was definitely authentic and a great atmosphere. The owner would stop by and make sure everything was good, which it always was! However, the last two times we have been (within the last year) the food has not been near as good and authentic as it used to be. In addition, the service has been poor! To start with the food: The pretzel and Gurken Salat to start with were very good, as were the fries. However, the Schnitzel was a huge disappointment! It had absolutely no flavor! The pork was way too thick and chewy, it had no seasoning at all, and the breading was more like a fish and chips style of breading, deep fried thick crust rather than the typical thin breadcrumb style breading. It was just not at all what a schnitzel should taste like and schnitzel is one of the main reasons we come here. What a shame, it used to be really good! On to the service: Wow, our server was in a BAD MOOD! And he made it known! First of all, he told us he is the only one serving the outside so he wanted us to move tables so it's easier on him. Uhm excuse me? The backyard is not huge to begin with so no. Second, he was so so grumpy! Just unpleasant from the moment we arrived. He made it known that he is annoyed with his workload and you cannot do that as a server. Guests should feel welcome not like an annoyance and inconvenience! Third, we asked for a recommendation of a pilsner and he said "I don't know what that is, there is a list of the beer over here. What do you want, an IPA?" Uhm an IPA is a completely different beer than a Pilsner! And you work at a beer garden and don't know beer types?! He was so rushed and impatient the entire time, it was super uncomfortable. Overall, this was just a huge disappointment. The server was unprofessional, argumentative, and annoyed with our presence. The schnitzel was not authentic nor tasty. Great food and great atmosphere. They have a whole shelf of children's toys/books that kept ours entertained for most of the dinner. The Ruben sandwich was amazing, along with the fries! I love that the pretzel comes in 3 sizes. Only problem is the side of beer cheese only comes in one size and almost costs the same as the small pretzel. But it's delicious! My wife and I were celebrating a minor milestone and wanted German food for the occasion. Our waiter was very friendly, engaging with us about our milestone and sharing his own personal experiences. We went at an odd time of day so there were only a few people in there, but the ambience was fun and kitschy, giving the feeling that we were in a tavern in Germany. We got a large order to try out as much as possible: a couple large pretzels, a Reuben and Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich, Fish & Chips, Apple Struddle and Black Forest Cake. Kathrin's Biergarten is conveniently located off Granite Drive, in a strip mall. There's plenty of parking, a spacious dining room, and patio with plenty of shade and picnic table seating. It really has a German beer hall feel will authentic looking signs, German decor, and wood paneling. I sat at the bar and ordered a pint of Kostritzer Schwarz (don't ask me to pronounce it) and the curry wurst plate. My beer was a bit pricey at $11.53 for a pint, but had a great color and nice slightly bitter flavor. The curry wurst plate was more reasonable at $12.35, and came with a white sausage, curried ketchup, a pile of fries, and some each I requested. The sausage was juicy and delicious, but I wasn't a huge fan of the curried ketchup. I'm not really a ketchup guy anyway, I prefer ranch or aioli sauces. The fries were hot, thick, and incredibly crisp. The ranch they served it with was delicious. The bartender was hospitable and efficient. He recognized me right away and served me quickly. We had been here for lunch, a while back and really enjoyed it. We went again for lunch and it was a totally different experience. We found that they served the dinner menu all day and there was no lunch menu. We ended up ordering the Oktoberfest platter, which it was made up of five sausages, schnitzel, red cabbage, sauerkraut and french fries. 4 of the 5 sausages were extremely dry and over cooked. Schnitzel was dry and flavorless. It seemed as if they had heated everything up in a microwave. Overly hot and very dry. Happy hour started at 3PM and we arrived at 2:45. That would have given us a discount on food and beer. But we figured oh well, our bad for not realizing. We commented on it to the bartender / server, like "oh darn" and he didn't really react. It was not like we expected to get the happy hour prices, we were just commenting. Then, unfortunately, we overheard him talking to two men at the bar, saying "I waited until 3PM to ring up your beers because I wanted to give you happy hour price." Yikes! Why not us? (Only us and these two gents inside at the time. There was a handful of people at outside tables.) We are disappointed because we had enjoyed them before and they are the closest restaurant to us serving German food. The food and the service that day are not very motivating to return. read more

WHAAAT ? and my wife standard Schnitzel and Fries. After living in Germany for close to 4 years I know you don't put mushroom sauce over breaded Schnitzel !!! The sauce goes over non breaded Schnitzel ! When my wife mentioned her dinner was chewy along with all the other telltale signs we started hunting online when we arrived home. We not only found the website where she orders all of her entrees pre made, they sold all of her appetizers and in the portions offered on the menu ! Heck they even sold the exact same beer !!!! So then it was obvious, Catherine's was selling premade frozen German dishes that they microwave for every customer... They even sold the deserts...All from (1) One Website !!! How pathetic ! What's better than Oktoberfest at your local German restaurant? Although not truly Oktoberfest, and also near the end of it, it's close enough! The beer selection here, especially German, is awe inspiring. To see Andechs on the selection of choices makes my heart sing, although this time I was aiming for an Oktoberfest special. I selected a half liter of the Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest and it was amazingly good. So, thank you Kathrin's for making it possible. By the way, should you ever find yourself near the Andechs Monastery in southern Bavaria, GO! I once attended church services and afterwards everyone pours out of the church and into the adjacent biergarten to drink the awesome beer! Well worth the experience. But, for this experience along with the beer I tried the Spicy Goulash and it was very good. The noodles were fresh, well prepared, and the meat chunks and sauce quite delicious. The spice level was just right and didn't overwhelm the dish. My dining partner had the pork schnitzel and spaetzle and it looked delicious as well. It was a very hearty portion. Overall, the meal was excellent and very enjoyable. The service was very good, attentive and professional. The only complaint, again, is the noise level inside, not so bad in the biergarten outside. It's nearly impossible to have conversation with the high reverberation level. But, that won't deter me from another visit. The prices are good and the German beer in itself worth coming here. This place exceeded all my expectations. I haven't had food this great since I was last in Munich, Germany. The design of the place definitely made it feel like I was back in Germany in one of the beer halls. The service was fantastic and welcoming, they had an amazing drink selection with hard to find beverages, and the food was so delicious! The portion sizes are very large too, which was nice. We were totally prepared to be disappointed by the food, since that was the experience in Ohio and Nevada at German Bier Gardens & restaurants but no, the food was spot on. Went for lunch on a fall day. The setting is nice with outdoor seating similar to a German Biergarten and indoor seating too. It was not busy and the service was very attentive. As expected, there was an extensive selection of German beer and other beverages and beer we ordered was good. Thus if you were going for the beer, specifically German and European style, Kathrin's is an excellent choice. However, the food quality is only mediocre, and is not authentic. For example, schnitzel is a common German dish and Kathrin's serves a version called jager schnitzel with mushrooms and gravy. The meat was greasy and a bit over cooked, while the sauce flavorless and had only 2-3 mushrooms. The other dish we had was fish and chips, which again were not remarkable. To be fair, we only tried these two dishes but it would be reasonable to expect a German restaurant to prepare a very good schnitzel. read more

Ordered : The large pretzel with beer cheese BLT Chicken Schnitzel & a side of spatzle. The pretzel arrives : something happened with the beer cheese & it can't be served. **that's why we got the pretzel. We should have been told ahead of time as we wouldn't have ordered it. 1/3 was left uneaten. The BLT : delicious (we almost ordered another) The spatzle : the beer cheese wasn't served. I don't know what it was served with- we left 85% of that dish. The chicken schnitzel- sooo dry. Ok flavor but sooooo dry. The french fries were delicious! If the beer cheese can't be served- that needs to be told before an item is ordered. Especially when we say "oh the beer cheese!!" I left terribly disappointed in the lack of communication & the dryness of the chicken. My favorite thing at Katherin's is the Bee Hive cake. A lovely German restaurant and Biergarten with a nice outside patio and indoor seating with tables and a bar. The outdoor patio area has some shaded seating, features large granite boulders and also allows dogs. The food is amazing! The servers made great recommendations, they suggested the Wienerschnitzel (schnitzel with a delightful brown mushroom gravy) with spaetzel (homemade pasta) and the Reuben sandwich. The traditional plain schnitzel is also very good. I've tried both pork and chicken. The Reuben sandwich is amazing as well, and comes with fries. The big pretzel is perfectly salty and chewy, and comes with a cheese sauce and fancy spicy brown mustard and a smooth mustard. It reheats very well in the oven, so we get the big one. The red cabbage is good and has a surprising clove spiced flavor. And the potato salad is unique in a good way and has a vinegary flavor. The beer is also a big hit with many types of German selections, and some ciders as well. I like the Dunkelwiezen but last time they had some kind of berry cider on tap that I really liked as well. Food quality overall was just ok with many items, but had some exceptionally items.The Reuben sandwich was pretty small but taste good. This was the first restaurant I've ever seen that charge for refills on ice tea, and sodas. Pricing was not bad but it looked like it was set by percentage of food cost. The server we had only had three tables with approximately 3 to 6 patrons at each table. He got us water fast but we waited for drinks too long. He waited to take our food order after we got our drinks. (They lost drink sales.) However, the restaurant was just starting to get busy and I saw two servers just cleaning tables and appeared not very busy. When this guys patron got low service.
