So-Called French soup with croutons and white broth and uncooked onions
Robert S.

This is a nice charming place nice staff. If you're thinking this place is a French cuisine restaurant it's far from it. What caught my eye first. I saw that they had french onion soup (I am a big fan of) The only thing that's "French" is the ceramic bowl that it's served in, Note my pictures French onion soup should be a beef broth, not a vegetable base broth. If that, what was, onion should been sauteed then put in the broth, not raw onions, and especially not using croutons instead should use a piece of baguette. The cheese was good. As well as their French dip sandwich. There's nothing french about it. Note to owner French dips were invented in Los Angeles in the early 1900s, not France. The meat was decent not chewy. The au jus, you could tell came out of a can. I usually do not try to write bad reviews, but if you want a nice charming place that serves sandwiches and Mexican cuisine, this might be the right place and it's extremely quiet in there which is nice too.

One of the best kept secrets in Pasadena. Hot and new for the last 40 years! Still managed by the friendly owner Kathleen who still attends to all the guests with her very friendly personality and wonderful hospitality. A true restauranteur at heart which is hard to find these days. Her partner does all the fresh baked items and desserts that range from banana bread, zucchini bread, pies and cakes all made fresh! Amazing staff and service too! You always tell a great restauranteur by their staff and knowing that they have been there a long time and still take pride in the service, food and tending to regulars by name. Open mostly for breakfast and lunch and early dinner. Opens early and closes early always steadily busy with its regular and mixed Pasadena clientele from all walks of life. Wonderful selection on the menu including a bar and breakfast fiesta specials including some Mexican breakfast favorites and a wonderful looking Belgian waffle and French toast. Their blt and avocado sandwich was excellent along with its shoestring fries. Their onion soup is probably one of the best in LA - not so beefy but a good mix of onions, melted cheese and homemade croutons. I'd come back for just the French onion soup and their spinach salad but want to try everything on their menu from their cod tempura fish & chips to their kebabs and steak! Plus plenty of salads, burgers, sandwiches and California cuisine! I think i found a new favorite place to dine! Perfect for breakfast or brunch and they have a dining room off to the side that can accommodate larger parties. Very kid friendly too! I've passed by Kathleen's for so many years and always thought it was an upscale restaurant but was so pleased to see how casual, friendly and great food was hidden behind its wooden front facade. They even have some outdoor patio dining in the back making them pooch and dog friendly. Their casual dining room and menu make it a perfect restaurant for everyone. The zucchini bread loaf was generous and delicious! I wanted to get the banana bread but it was already sold out! PS $1 mimosas for breakfast? What a deal! I will definitely be back many times. What a gem , hole in the wall wonderful dining experience for breakfast or lunch. Just nearby the Reyn restaurant but i think is way better! Prices are just a buck or two more but the quality of Kathleen's food and service is much better than most coffee shops or diners. Plenty of parking in the back.

Kathleen's has graciously hosted our Pasadena City College Football Alumni luncheon for a few years now and they always treat us like family. I had a taste for enchiladas and I wasn't disappointed! I asked my waitress about them and they came highly recommended so I ordered them. Kathleen is a queen and they do a wonderful job serving their customers.

Watery coffee. But David will keep it hot and filled for you so that you forget how watery it is.

Believe the reviews about unfriendly energies, sub standard food, and the place being egregiously tired. Needs to be bulldozed down, it is so old and dated. If you are not geriatric and caucasian, please please please save yourself a bewildering headache. I made the most terrible mistake of coming here with my family. I am embarrassed to have celebrated an impromptu event there. Goes to show, Yelp is not always right. Trust your gut people. Never again. The servers are nice but, yes, robotic, as others have said. The one star is for David. He is a gentleman of the highest degree in that decrepit dark cesspool of a restaurant. He needs to resign and set his sights much higher. I wanted to leave 10 minutes in but my party didnt want to be rude. Oh, and if you're wondering: 1. Nothing from the griddle until the weekend. Don't ask for pancakes or waffles. Nothing. I have no idea about the mimosas either. Nothing was offered. 2. In case you forgot, if you're black or brown, turn around. Dont go in. Please.

I walk by daily! So glad we finally came in. The baguette was perfect, crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. The salad with house vinaigrette was perfection, and the oysters from British Columbia were incredibly fresh and delicious. I had the Short Rib Ravioli with braised beef, and Linda had the duck confit, which she loved. She enjoyed a glass of red wine, I had a bottle of Coke, and we finished by sharing an amazing Tarte Tatin with ice cream. The unexpected highlight was the personality of the two owners. Their playful banter, including throwing each other under the bus in the funniest way, made the whole evening. We love humor and personality, and the combination of beautiful food, a wonderful atmosphere, and plenty of laughs made this such a fun night. We'll be back! Jeffery and Linda

Such a lovely, warm, and romantic French restaurant. The experience is a slower European pace than…read morethe quick American style - our meal was a little over two hours for only three courses. The food was amazing - classic and approachable. The cocktails were classics with French flair, and the wine list was good and not too expansive. We both started with a cocktail - the Margarita á L'Aperol for the hubby - think a pina colada with tequila (instead of rum) that's shaken with Aperol (an Italian aperitive) and ice - and the Vieux Carré for me - rye whiskey & cognac over a solid large ice cube with splashes is l'antica carpano sweet vermouth and dom benedictine. From the à la carte menu we started with the hot fresh sliced baguette for the table. The seasonal three-course prix fixe menu is such a great value at $55 and had everything I wanted in a meal. My husband started with the French Onion Soup (very delicious, packed with onions, but not a ton of cheese like most French Onion Soups made for Americans), Bangers & Mash as his main (housemade sausages that were savory duck with a hint of sweetness from the figs, smooth & creamy potatoes - no lumps, not watery, and not gummy - and a lovely fig balsamic ju), and finished his meal with the Sticky Toffee Pudding (very yummy, but probably the sweetest one he's every had - mostly due to the toffee sauce. The date sponge cake was phenomenal and the vanilla creme fraiche ice cream created balance). My first course was th pâte champagne (country style pork pate that was well balanced, sourdough toast, brightness from the cornichones and Dijon mustard), splurged with the Filet au Poivre (a $20 upcharge that was well worth it, 8 oz filet mignon, umami packed roasted mushrooms with a delicious peppercorn sauce, and the crispy shoestring fries added a nice crunch and sopped up the juices), and finished the meal with the Gâteau Basque (a Northern Basque custard tart - a more dense and less version on an New York style cheesecake...this balanced well with the Filet). This was such a wonderful experience that I cannot wait to try what's in next season's prix fixe menu.

Overall, we found the food and beverage to be excellent. We both indulged in the pre-fixe menu this evening, which is currently available during the earlier part of the week. It was $55 per person, which is a pretty good discount off normal menu prices. I started out with the French Onion Soup. It was quite yummy. My entree was the Bangers and Mash, which does not appear on the regular menu. It was also delicious. For dessert, I had the sticky toffee cake, which is one of my favorite desserts and is truly a sugar rush delight! For my beverage, I had the margarita, which here is done with a twist including Aperol, lime and coconut. It is delicious, and I had two throughout my meal. So, overall, I give the food a 5 out of 5; however, the service left a lot to be desired. This is a pretty nice restaurant and I would expect the service to be on the "slower" side. It takes a while to prepare great food. However, this service was painstakingly slow. It took our meal almost three hours to be completely served. There were gaps of more than 25 minutes between some of the courses, and it took more than 35 minutes for our order to be taken. The server was non-existent at times and never checked in on us, during the entire course of the meal. All food was brought out by people that were not our server. I honestly cringed at the fact that I left 20% gratuity for non-existent service. Anyway, overall -- a good experience; however, I would hope to have better service if I returned again in the future.

QUICK TAKE Get: Fish of the Day, Lamb, Moroccan-style Mushrooms Skip: Duck was our one miss Know: This is a good place for adventurous eaters who like sharing dishes and trying unexpected flavor combinations. Holy Saints does a nice job of making food feel creative without crossing over into "trying too hard." There are a lot of different influences running through the menu, and several dishes had us talking about the flavors and ingredients as much as the food itself. What we tried: Moroccan-style Mushrooms - A great example of what Holy Saints does well. Earthy, savory mushrooms with contrasting textures from the nuts, thinly sliced radish, herbs and crispy elements on top. There was a lot happening on the plate, but it all worked together. Definitely one to share. Fish of the Day - One of the highlights of the meal and something I would absolutely order again. The fish came over rice in a deeply flavored sauce with peppers, herbs and fresh vegetables. Colorful, comforting and much more interesting than the standard fish-and-vegetables preparation you see at a lot of restaurants. Lamb - Another winner. Rich, hearty and well seasoned, with the sauce pulling everything together. If you're visiting for the first time and like lamb, this would be high on my list. Duck - Good flavor, but it seemed like the duck sauce could have benefited from a little more time to rest before being sliced and served. We joked that we should have brought a bag, taken it home and eaten it as leftovers instead. Sometimes duck might just need a night to think about what it did. What I liked most about Holy Saints is that the food wasn't boring. The kitchen takes familiar ingredients and puts them together in ways you probably wouldn't think of yourself, which makes it a fun restaurant for ordering several things and sharing around the table.

I'd been sleeping on this place! I really liked the open, airy, diner-like atmosphere here, with comfy, clean booths but still a bit of an upscale feel. We started with the House Pickles and some fresh oysters. Our server was great at recommending some oysters in different flavor profiles, since we liked the milkier, less briny-tasting varieties. His recs were spot on too, and I loved that they provided house-prepared mignontette and horseradish. Then, we shared the Maryland blue crab cake (one cake that was big enough for its own meal) and the U10 Diver Scallops that came in a sauce of cream, spinach and bacon, and a side of buttery, soft bread. I make scallops all the time at home and never would have thought of a sauce like this... it was dreamy! We used the bread to just about clean the plate (since it isn't really socially acceptable to lick a plate in a restaurant), and I'm still thinking about the scallops and that sauce today. The crab cake and pickles were excellent too. We paired everything with some crisp New Zealand sauv blanc. We ordered the Moules Marinières (mussels) but requested to have it as our appetizer which they were happy to do for us. The broth was exquisite. We didn't even leave a drop behind. It came with a large portion of mussels and great French fries that were nice and crispy. To pair with this dish, we also ordered bread which I believe was $8. The bread went really well with the broth. For our entrees my wife had the Magret de Canard Roti (seared duck breast) which was cooked perfectly med-rare. I tried a bite and was really impressed. So much flavor, and the skin was crispy. I ordered the Braised Lamb Shank which was soooo good. I loved the way that it was plated, deboned, and with tons of gravy. The mashed potato puree was very flavorful and buttery. I would absolutely order this again. For dessert, we got the Tarte Tatin (apple tart with ice cream). It came very nicely plated, and a large portion too. The tart itself was kind of cold-ish, and while it was very tasty, we had expected a tart like this to be served warm as if it just came out of the oven. Presentation was really nice, and honestly it was still really really good, but yes I think it would have been better if it was served warmer. Didn't stop us from devouring it though haha.
