Our official SF guide took us here for breakfast - though we explicitly asked for a place that served mimosas and bloody Marys. As headed toward Kate's we popped our heads in some potentials but found no libations, so by the time we hit Kate's we had given up on the idea and just wanted to eat. I am really glad we waited. Of the utmost importance about Kate's is that they have menu item named after me (Lauren's Special), which, of course, I ordered. Two, their chairs are wicked comfy. Three, their flavored (unsweetened) ice tea was the incredible (berry). Reminds me of what they serve at Pita Jungle - I have to find this brand, it is soooo good. The server was patient with one person in our group's somewhat difficult diet limitations (though I suppose that's pretty common in California). Food came out pretty quickly, though the waitress seemed to actively ignore us for 20 minutes after we were clearly done eating (hard to do in such a small place and considering she literally walked right by us several times to get to the kitchen). But the food was great. My poached egg was perfection and the potatoes were yummy too (boo to no Chalula or Tapatio, come on, is this California or what?). Their house hot sauce looked like watered down Tabasco - and I find Tabasco to be pretty watered down anyway. But some people at the table tried it and said it was a-ok. read more

We had an incredibly unsatisfying lunch here with some friends. I had seen a line out the door last time I was in the neighborhood, so I thought it would be a sure thing. Although, I hadn't checked the Yelp reviews. The menu is quite honestly...boring. But, after walking around for awhile, we were all starving. My guy and I decided to share two dishes: a short stack of cornmeal pancakes, and an egg sandwich. We requested the egg sandwich on whole wheat bread, which I'm really glad we did, since it was probably the best part of our meal. The potatoes that came with the egg sandwich were awful, no flavor, and not even properly cooked. The egg sandwich was fine, I think it would have been really hard to screw this up. The cornmeal pancakes were bland and completely flavorless. I've had cornmeal pancakes before, and have loved them, but these were a waste of money. Seriously, how hard is it to get decent flavor in them? When the server asked how we liked everything, i said I didn't really like the pancakes. He asked why, and i told him I thought they were pretty bland. He didn't offer to bring anything else out, nor did he comp them, (even though we didn't even eat half of them.) Not great at all. Especially when compared to other breakfast spots in the area. My waitress (not all them, just my one) was kinda grumpy, unable to crack a smile until I was leaving! My food arrived quickly and wasn't expensive. But it was bland, dry and boring. I ordered the scrambled egg, home fries and bacon. The bacon was too well done, the home fries not chopped small enough (huge dry hunks with no seasoning) and the scrambled egg more like an omelette cut up into big pieces. It really could have used some flavour... Either tomatoes, peppers, onions or avocado would have helped it hugely. I have never been on the weekend. I can imagine that the wait is dumb. the wait is dumb everywhere people! This place is awesome. It is cheap and the potions are gigantic. Oh wow. So if you ever wake up early on the weekend, this is a place to try. We got here before a line formed. Started with everyone's recommendation: hush puppies with pooh butter. Pooh butter makes these EXCELLENT. You get 6 big balls of fried corn meal, nice and hot so it melts the honey butter. I had the French Toast made from Texas Toast Wheat Bread with Strawberries & Bananas. You get 6 thick halves. Wowsers. ($8.00). The Orange Spice French Toast Orgy looked good too. A table nearby had it, and it came with a side bowl of yogurt fruit and granola. We also tried the Flanched Farney Garney (or something like that). Basically a Kaiser Roll with an egg of your choice, bacon or sausage and cheese. I recommend adding condiments (e.g. ketchup, salt/pepper) to liven this up. There were many more items on the menu. The service is fast and efficient. The restaurant is small and fills up fast. Line starts forming at 9:30a. Not ideal for big groups. 2 or 4 is optimal. Hmmm! read more

Gotta agree the brunch here is not only reasonably priced but delicious. Had biscuits and gravy $5.50 not a huge southern fan but once awhile I love the richness of sausage gravy and hands down one of the best gravy! The scones are good buy not spectacular Hush puppies $3.75 a little dry on its own but add the honey pooh but ur and it's amazing, a little dessert afar the meal And the French toast orgy covered in granola, yogurt and fruit. I think I'm actually pissed off at this place because everytime I walk down to Fillmore and Haight I look at this place with disgust. Absolute disgust. I first visited Kate's Kitchen 2 years ago when I first visited San Francisco, and naive little me got off on the wrong stop and thought I was in the infamous Haight Ashbury District. I stopped into Kate's Kitchen and had their red beans and rice dish. I remember it being totally bland and boring. And the greens tasted awful. Fast forward to the other week when I've been in San Francisco for 2 years and now live and Lower Haight and decide to try Kate's a second chance... I order the French Toast and a side of bacon. The waiter forgets to put my order in and after 20 minutes of waiting and watching everyone who arrived after me get there food, I ask the waiter where my food is and point out that the guy next to me came in 15 minutes after me and is now enjoying his meal and I'm not. The waiter gets annoyed with me and tells me that he only ordered a fried egg sandwich which takes no time and I ordered the french toast...so... Egg and bread? vs. Egg and bread? I guess I just must have been missing something. Magically, my food comes out 6 minutes after I complain (kind of like he finally put my order in and they cooked it). Anyways, the french toast was obnoxious. 6 large pieces of bland bread on my plate glistening with oil, with little egg, that didn't taste good with the syrup and tasted just ok with the strawberry jam. I felt like I was being served glorified toast and there was enough bread there for 3 people! Rude and incompetent service. Bland food and obnoxiously large portions. Not going back. Kate's currently has 3.5 stars total and that's perfect. I've heard people rave about this place but I find it pretty good. Not super great. Their corn pancakes are awesome as is the coffee. The biscuits always sound so good but they are kinda nasty. The vegetarian sausage gravy it comes with is f'in GREAT though. if I wasn't spoiled by the brunch places in LA, I'd possibly give this place 4 stars but I just can't do it knowing what the potential for a fantastic brunch place can be. read more

There's always a line, but it's not anything spectacular. I think there are just a lack of breakfast places in lower haight. Ate here twice, once I went right when the place opened on a weekend so no line, however, the staff were eating first and made us wait outside for 15min after the place was supposed to open. This would have never happened on the East Coast lol. Got the regular breakfast, it was average. Second time wait for at least 30 min on Sunday around 11am, got the corned beef hash, it was a little better than average. Cons -- the potatoes are completely flavorless and cooked to mush (kind of unforgivable). The special omelet I got was okay, but also a little on the bland side. Pros -- I liked the atmosphere and the service was friendly. It looks like the mainstays on the menu are pretty cheap too (though the special I got was normalish brunch prices). Kate's Kitchen and my torrid love affair with Hush Puppies. You didn't blow me away. Another case of having high expectations i guess. I love Hush Puppies, and ever since BlueJay Cafe took them off the menu, I've been looking for a spot that has them. So on a rainy Friday early (I mean EARLY!) morning, my room mate and I decided to head over to Kate's. Dude even before i walked in, i could just taste the deliciousness of Hush Puppies! Drool!!!!....... We were seated immediately and of course i ordered the Hush Puppies with pooh butter, along with a side order to cornmeal pancakes with bananas and walnut's,(yes! in my world pancakes are a side order!) and home style biscuits. I couldn't stop thinking about the hush puppies, the wait was agonizing! Now here i am, having set myself up for major disappointment. It's like going out on a blind date. You're expecting some one totally hot to walk in, but that's not what destiny or that dude from work who set you up with his "HOT" co-worker, had in mind. I can't even tell you how disappointed i was. The first bite of the hush puppy, and i didn't see stars. COME ON!! it's not supposed to be like this! this is worse than a break up! The hush puppies were oily and pretty flavorless. The pooh butter made them better, but you now, it's like that pretty chick you know who wear tons of makeup, isn't that pretty without it. It's just not the same and It can only get you so far. In addition, the pancakes were weird and grainy. I can still feel the graininess in my throat. Ugghhh.... The service was the saving grace. Quick and efficient. And to top it off, Kate's in a cash only establishment. Great! So I'm insanely disappointed, BlueJay still won't bring the hush puppies back and i ended up paying 16$ for breakfast. I won't be back. 2.5 Stars, but .5 for giving me hope. Nothing beats a cheap yummy "breakfast" (at 2 pm) when you're hungover. Very casual, if slightly hectic, atmosphere. I highly recommend some of the specials. I had an omelet from the specials once that blew my mind. Their egg sandwich type things are also pretty great and nice on your wallet. I also noticed they were recently named one of the "favorite places" in SF on google. Good for them. Watch out for some the the "quirks" here though. To get to the bathroom you have to go through the very busy kitchen. Pretty funny but potentially not the best idea... Also the waiting staff can be up and down. SO GOOD at only $8.50. My hubby got the special pumpkin french toast; it had thick gooey slices of battered bread....*drool...* I would steer away from the Herbal Berry Iced Tea though, it tasted suspiciously like Celestial Seasonings' "very berry" and was frankly underwhelming. I used to love eating at this place when I DIDN't live in the neighborhood, now that it's three blocks away I'm getting fat. Top two favorite breakfasts in the city for me. I love the big hashbrown plate - great greasy cure for a hangover. The french toast orgy is aptly named - and i'm kinda horrified that I can actually finish one (see first sentence). And the french toast orgy is a delight, but only if you're the kind of person who doesn't mind having what is essentially three full meals stacked on top of eachother and set in front of you. What keeps Kate from that elusive fifth star? 1. The gravy is no good. 2. There's one waiter that thinks he's god's gift to front-of-house staff. A lot of food they give you but I feel like they just "pile it on" and its not something that good (they have thick bacon, potato hash, english muffin, and sausage". Always a favorite for Sunday brunch but I went here on a Saturday this time. Only difference is that you have to pay for street parking. I had the Big Guy Breakfast but I sampled my friend's corned beef hash too. It was no canned hash, it was homemade and delicious. My meal was um, big. Two eggs, bacon, home fries, something that looked like homemade sausage patty, and two giant pancakes. Very satisfying and a great value. The coffee was a bit strong and not in a dark roast sort of way but more in a "it's been sitting, baking, reducing" sort of a way. Nothing a little cream and sugar couldn't handle. There can sometimes be a long wait and you need to sign the list outside the door then wait. Well worth it though. I had the big boy's breakfast (or something like that). It came with 2 eggs, sausage, bacon, house potatoes, and 2 big cornmeal pancakes. Everything was good. The sausage patty stood out and had some nice flavor. The pancakes were good, and I appreciated the generous size. I don't know why they bring them out with such a tiny shot glass of syrup with it though. I also sampled some of my friend's corn hash, which was, surprisingly, a mix of potatoes, big pieces of onion, and carrots with a smattering of pieces of meat. Meh. I've had better, much better. My gf and I go out for breakfast a lot. I mean, we really like it. It's one of our favorite meals to go out for. We're still decently new to SF, and pick where we go based on yelp reviews quite a bit. If you google 'best breakfast sf' there are a few spots that consistently pop up, and Kate's is one of them. I'm not sure why. Our service was effective, but not necessarily friendly (or unfriendly for that matter) or attentive; just effective. The food was definitely nothing to write home about. My gf's veggie scramble was fine, but frankly I make better at home. It was late morning, and I went with lunch food; red beans and rice. What a mistake! I grew up in south Louisiana in the heart of cajun country and make killer red beans. I really don't know what I was thinking, but these were sub-par and almost flavorless. Actually, now that I think about it, they were actually pretty terrible. Their biscuits were not good either; dry. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. My waitress was very sweet and friendly. My food was good it wasn't vomit inducing but it wasn't oral bliss either but at least it was healthy. The place is small and it didn't look like it had a restroom. I got there in the afternoon so I think I was the last order so I didn't have to wait for a table. I ordered a veggie omelet and a homemade ginger ale and waow! I knew it was ginger but it took a second to get used to, still I liked it. The menu seems to be very healthy and not too heavy on meat dishes and they offer gluten-free items if that's your thing. I knew the kitchen was closing but I wanted to order something to go after I was finished with my meal to take to my friend and the owner/manager was not accommodating at all. It was a veggie sandwich so I don't see how fire was part of the equation. He proceeded to tell me that the place closes at 2:45 and his cooks had been there since 7 a.m. and it was almost 4 p.m. Still it's 9 hours and I don't think an extra 3 minutes would have killed anyone and it would have been another sale but I guess my money wasn't good enough. In general I got a negative vibe and major side-eye action from the owner/manager. My thoughts are if you are so close to closing time then don't take my order to begin with. But if you do and I ask for something while I'm still eating and it doesn't require fire what's the big deal? Overall I liked the service from my waitress hated the attitude from the manager/owner. Used a groupon for this place. I've been to Kate's Kitchen before during weekend brunch many many years ago. i haven't returned since until this deal came up. We were met with no one at the restaurant. Only 3 employees. 2 working and one guy just kind of hanging out. We started with chicken wings and it was drenched in this BBQ sauce that overpowered the wings. I ordered the paella and my friend ordered the fried chicken. The paella was presented on a plate rather than on a paella pan. The presentation needed a little more support. It looked like a hot mess. It tasted and looked like gumbo. It was good...enough...only if they just called it gumbo instead of paella. The fried chicken was good with sides of mash potatoes and added side of collard greens w/ hamhock. collard greens were slightly too salty. I hate to say it but overall it was just ok. Service was okay. By the end of the night an additional 2 tables were filled so it felt a little better that other folks were in there. Stumbled to this place on my first morning in SF. It was actually 12:30 in the afternoon and I was starving. Things were getting desperate and I had no idea where to go, was just walking. But always check out a place that's simply a woman's name. Boy was I happy I followed that rule. It's a small diner with many tables and not much elbow room. Didn't care at all though. The food was fresh. The flavors excellent and the service fast and friendly. Nothing to complain about. Oh, and the prices were spot on perfect. This place was amazing! I had the fancy grilled cheese with tomato and pesto. It was one of the best ones I've ever had. My friend had the city salad and she said it was wonderful! It was very fresh and pretty. Her mom had the spicy chicken sandwich. Her only complaint was the chicken is served cold, instead of hot. However she said it was great and had blue cheese which gave it a nice twist. I also enjoyed a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice while my companions enjoyed hot coffee and a homemade lemonade spritzer! The service was fast and friendly and the price point was nice! My answer to "What would your final, pre-death meal be if you could choose?" is at Kate's Kitchen, and it comes in the form of a gigantic pile of orange spice (not too orange or too spice) french toast, yogurt, granola, fruit, honey and maple syrup. The French Toast Orgy absolutely, 100% rocks. There is nothing fake, girly or wussy about this dish. It requires a battle plan and a full arsenal of weaponry from the second it hits your table. But believe me, it can be finished! You can beat this thing! When taking on this beast, remember to pace yourself. My 4'11" friend can usually out-eat me any day, but she rushed and left with a stomach ache and a bruised ego (and the girl can eat). Don't rush. Savor. This is seriously some of the best pre-hike or pre-bike food you can eat--it doesn't put you to sleep. All that granola somehow balances out the sugar coma most french toast induces. I've eaten this thing and walked to Ocean Beach and back without hesitation or weariness. I can't attest to any other dish at Kate's because in the last five years, I've never ordered anything but the Orgy. It all smells good and looks good, though. They make a really good hand-made ginger ale. The prices are incredibly reasonable for what you get, and the waits don't tend to be too long. Even with ten parties in front of you, the cattle prod is frequently used in the form of extremely efficient service, so the line goes fast. In this case, the line is genuinely a reflection of very good food, instead of lazy waiters and laggy patrons. Kate herself? Wander through the kitchen toward the bathroom to see her in action. Wow. No wonder things move quickly. She is one bad-ass woman. Don't let the exterior, neighborhood, or even the interior greasy-spoon-looking atmosphere turn you back. Eat here, and be happy. This was my first time in San Francisco and after mapping out most of my trip, Kate's came up as a good spot to grab some breakfast before hitting up Haight St. The inside is small, quaint and welcoming. We were seated with smiles and looked over the menu. Basic breakfast items. I ordered the FLANCHED FARNEY CARNEY - eggs over medium with bacon. I was told they were out of whatever bread it was served on, so i got the biscuit instead. The biscuit was dry and had pieces of rosemary in it (what an odd combo). My home fries were burnt but replaced with an edible serving, no questions asked. I did try my boyfriends cornmeal pancakes. They were different but good. My taste buds were battling each other "are these pancakes or cornbread" type of thing. The OJ was refreshing, not too sweet and not tart at all. Would I go back? The wait staff was super friendly, but the food is terrible. I got the hash (which is a plate of grilled corned beef, carrots, fennel, onion, and potatoes with two eggs on top ... NOT a hash). The veggies were both burnt and hard on the inside, so the grill is probably WAY too hot. The corned beef was dry and mostly flavorless. The cheddar chive biscuit was decent, but came nowhere close to recovering the meal. Basically I ate my two over easy eggs and had to leave the rest. I don't really get why this place has been popular for so many years. When I first moved here five years ago the fact that it was two doors down from me and was always really buzzing with customers made me want to try it and see what all the fuss was about. After going back three times (ordering different things each time) in the last five years I still don't get what the big deal is. The food is incredibly bland, I feel like I add tons of salt to everything which really isn't a good thing. I will say that the staff is friendly and I really like the atmosphere but I can't really see myself going back for round four. read more
