A good spot for brunch in the lower haight area. Usually there's no wait or a short wait (10-15 minutes). They have the usual brunches staples, and are particularly known for their interesting French toasts flavours. The French toast orgy is basically a yogurt parfait on top of French toast and is quite delicious. They also have specials which change around such as the pumpkin chocolate chip French toast. I also really liked the simple farmers breakfast which has eggs, potatoes, and toast (get the biscuit instead of toast because it's really good!). read more

I was trying to figure out what I wanted to eat this morning and this place popped up. I went today and they had a lot of construction going on. But the staff was super nice and even gave us complimentary hush puppies for the noises. The staff was super attentive and polite and to get something complimentary at a restaurant due to noises is rare. I would love to come back again! I took my partner to Kate's Kitchen since they boasted several Gluten-Free options. Since he has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease we have been on the hunt for great places to eat that can accommodate his dietary restrictions. We ordered the gluten-free oatmeal cakes for him. He's very sensitive so we always ask about the chances for cross contamination depending on the food preparation environment. The waitress was very nice and said she would go and ask for us to make sure. Soon after, someone else came out and let us know that they actually add a little bit of gluten to the oatmeal to make the cakes. Yes. You heard correctly. "We add a little bit of gluten..." to our gluten-free oatmeal cakes. We kindly asked them to stop calling them gluten-free. So instead we ordered an egg scramble and a gluten-free biscuit. They assured us that the biscuits were free of gluten. When the food came, it came with home fries. My partner then asked if they can check how the home fries are prepared, since we have encountered places that actually dredge the potatoes in a flour, or dust the potatoes in flour. They came back to let us know that there is no flour there either. Awesome...let's eat! So my partner digs in to the scramble, only to find that there are strips of tortilla throughout the scramble. This was not listed on the ingredients on the menu board. We are accustomed to asking about food preparation and the presence of gluten in the food we order. It's appalling that after we had asked about pretty much everything we ordered nobody at Kate's Kitchen clued in that we cannot have flour tortilla strips in the scramble. Brunch ruined...my partner left Kate's Kitchen hungry and angry. Dear Kate's Kitchen, Please do take seriously your customers' dietary restrictions. It is insane that you call your oatmeal cakes gluten-free when you consciously add gluten to them. For my partner, gluten is poison. Best Corn beef hash in the city? It says on the menu. I had to try that and I did. I was in the neighborhood about 25 years ago. It was all black neighborhood. The Church Street Muni station was pretty bad back then. So as the Safeway wasn't really safe. There was a diner called " Church Street Station" where "Home" is now. I used to go there for $1.99 Breakfast Special include 2 eggs, 2 bacon and 2 pan cakes, was a great deal. And they was a Gay-bar called "Hideaway". I used to play Pacman there. There was a great Blues music bar right on the corner of Haight and Fillmore. There was a little candy store called "Thomas's Hot dog and Ice-cream" on Fillmore between Haight and Waller. But I was overwhelming by a bunch of all those white people in the area used to be all black. I am just sayin' the neighborhood has changed. I think the 3 1/2 star average is a very accurate rating; unfortunately we are not given stars in halves and so having to choose between 3 and 4 I choose 3 for my recent breakfast experience at Kate's. Nothing I tried was bad, but the only really great thing was the cheese and green onion biscuit. And even though that thing was quite tasty, it wasn't the best I've had in the city. Besides the biscuit I also had sausage gravy (to accompany it), a side salad and some of Sir Nicholas' scramble. As far as atmosphere, the tables are really jammed in there. There is basically no room between two tables which makes it a little awkward to get out if you happen to be sitting at one of the interior tables. The service was friendly and the wait wasn't unbearable. However, if the wait was longer than about 15 minutes I don't think that I'd be up for it. I have finally solved the mystery of the hunger crisis in the world. Kate's Kitchen heaps enough food on your plate to feed an entire third world country. It is true. The "problem" part is that, as a rule, breakfast doesn't even reheat well 2 hours later, let alone the time it would take to transport it somewhere transcontinental. It is unfortunate that we can't send some of the food on our plates to some starving nation, because the portions here are ridiculous. 5 stars for the food..I am particularly fond of the hash and the french toast orgy (their words, not mine). 5 start for playing Journey last time I was dining here. 5 stars for refilling my coffee without me having to ask...which anyone who has seen me pre-morning coffee will bear witness to the importance of. Lacks flavor. Biscuits and gravy: to me a big disappointment - also tasteless Omelets: really good, but not anything to die for Potatoes: also not amazing Pancakes: the best I have had in the city so far!!! They serve three types of pancakes: oatmeal, cornmeal buttermilk, and pumpkin. You can choose different toppings like banana and walnuts, banana and strawberries, nutela, and, oh, cheddar! I have tried all different ones, and keep coming back to the oatmeal with banana and almonds topping. Today I decided to take my two friends to Kate's, we dealt with the usual line (not too bad) and we ordered the Big Guy breakfast, which consists of two pancakes, bacon AND sausage (to my friend's amazement!), eggs and potatoes. It was a real feast! After lots of coffee toasts, lots of laughs and food entertainment, it hits me what keeps bringing me back to this place: the fabulous service provided by Irene, the friendliness of Hassan (the owner), the very good price (and flexibility to add or make changes), and, of course, the out-of-this-world pancakes!!!! read more

A friend raved about Kate's biscuits and breakfasts so Saturday a friend and I headed to Kate's. The biscuits were amazing. I did not know a biscuit could be so hard you could not cut it with a knife or a saw. If you're looking for ammunition for your slingshot, Kate's is the place. Order a half dozen biscuits and you can kill elephants with them. I ordered my eggs over medium and the cook almost managed to cook them over hard. The bacon was okay. The potatoes sucked. I ordered it with chicken and the chicken was thin, dry, and not delicious. The salad itself was good and fresh, but the chicken was pretty poorly cooked and presented. I just put down a basket of fried calamari, corn fritters, fried mushrooms AND an order of fish and chips from Barbara's Fish Trap this past weekend without batting an eyelash. There's good grease though, and then there's bad grease. This place was bad grease through and through. The type that makes your stomach queasy, making all sorts of weird, squeaky gurgling noises after you eat, and shortly after, causing massive stomach cramping. I orderd standard breakfast fare- bacon, eggs over medium, and it came with home fries. Everything, and I kid you not, EVERYTHING smelled and tasted like stale grease and it made me wanna hurl each time I took a bite. the home fries were the worst, as potatoes take on whatever flavor you cook them in. In this case it was stale grease flavor. Wretch. after I left I drove with my windows open to try and shake the nauseous smell off my hair and clothes. Good god I prayed, I promise to never gripe about smelling like Korean BBQ if you can just get rid of THIS nasty smell! Needless to say I spent the afternoon alone, curled in a tight ball on the couch when I wasn't making gallons of hot tea to flush the evil out, or to the bathroom to well, flush the evil out. However, this place is so mediocre in a city of fabulous food, it prompts me to help others save themselves (and their wallets) from this experience. First, their wait staff isn't very committed to the customer. Our waiter dropped the bill, but never once asked us how our food was or anything else to verify our satisfaction. (A low, even for CA service.) The kitchen and bathroom are near one another. I saw pans of food sitting out, unrefrigerated, that should have been in the walk-in cooler they don't seem to have. (Food health seems important, but we did check and they have a 94 health score so I will let this lie.) All the food was simply...meh. In a city where I am overwhelmed with amazing food choices, I'm bummed I forgot to check Yelp first to check their rating and relied solely on a "hidden brunch" article elsewhere. I ate at Kate's for my very first time today, and I have to say that I enjoyed it immensely. Perhaps the fine company of Mel T. enhanced the overall experience, but I thought it was totally basic diner food. With some pumpkin pancakes. You know, cuz it's San Francisco and all. But I'm from Milwaukee, so this shit is, like, classy to me. Our sixteen-year-old waitress was generous with the water and coffee refills and our food arrived in a timely manner. Okay, we did totally luck out and magically arrive at the best time possible. Like, there was one group of two ahead of us and within minutes of our sign-in did the sidewalk fill up with hungry, hungover folks. I'm sure that this no waitin' for 12pm brunch really helped Kate's cause, but the food was totally good, too! Plus, Mel and I had a fabulous conversation re: the politics of the artist who created the original map painting that the large mural copies, among many other brilliant and heady subjects. You only wish you could understand. I do not, however, need to see another pumpkin pancake until next fall because the utter heft and girth of those served at Kate's leave you with what feels like a fucking anchor in your belly, deterring you from jumping higher and/or running faster. read more

Years ago, we are talking five or so, I came here. I vaguely remember having one of the best brunches ever. Something about French toast combined with a parfait. I couldn't get it out of my mind. Is it even possible? Had inception taken place? I had to find out. Waking up after an epic, epic evening with Kyau & Albert and Simon Patterson, brunch was on. Joined by my food partner in crime aka adventurous sister, we arrived at Kate's hungry. Very hungry. We were going to need every bite of an appetite. Oh it's real. French toast. Yogurt. Granola. Fruit. It's call the French Toast Orgy, and my stomach still has that morning after flow. Bro and sis devoured this beast, and a rocking veggie omelet on the side. Yum, yum, yum! I'd had this place bookmarked for a while but hadn't made it down there. Didn't want to deal with the crowd. Today, Christmas-Eve-Eve, we hit Kate's up around noon. Only half-full (half-empty?), two nice servers, and attentive coffee refills. Then comes the food. We started with the hush puppies. My first experience with any hush puppies but a great way to start! Added the pooh-butter but still needed something. Added a small sprinkle of salt and the flavors POPPED! Sodium-Schmodium. This was delish! The boy ordered the Meat Omelette. I had the Veggie Scramble with a side of bacon. Both of us had our plates with biscuits. He loved the biscuit--me, the bread lover, I wasn't as keen. Loved the strawberry jam though! His omelette was good but I don't think it was anything to write home about. Good, don't get me wrong, but just not anything special. My veggie scramble was incredible! Snap peas added some crunch and forest mushrooms added a flavor that a simple white mushroom just couldn't have. Again, lacking a little in salt but that's why they put a shaker on the table! Being a morning person means I rarely have to do the 'sidewalk-wait' for breakfast/brunch on the weekends. I actively dislike standing on the sidewalk watching other people eat and hoping the next name called will be mine - it reminds me of teams forming in class for dodgeball. I waited for Kate's because I was promised hush puppies. That is the only reason (well, that and I was hungry and lazy). And Kate's definitely delivered. Not just the hush puppies (which were completely as advertised), but coffee dark and thick enough to stand a spoon up, pancakes the size of my end table and a mound of fruit/yogurt/nuts/honey/french toast that could feed approximately seventeen people and a small dog. I finished nothing - too much food... Our waitress was excellent - a truly nice person and very helpful. The food here I thought was just ok, the people I went with swore it's the best breakfast in town, but I'm thinking they haven't been out for breakfast all that much. Maybe I got the wrong thing, the pancakes looked pretty good and huge, but I chose the egg sandwich, which was reccomended to me, and it was just dry, dry, dry. And I had to ask for water about four times. They're on top of the coffee, I had about four cups within 30 min. Came here for Sunday brunch (yesterday) with a friend and only had a wait ~15 minutes and were seated by the window. Cozy table, but it was fine. Had the veggie omelet special which was flavorful. Unfortunately my experience changed when I went to use the facilitates. The bathroom is near the kitchen, understandable as it is a small place, but noticed the bacon was on a tray across from where the dishes were being cleaned. The most troubling thing was there was no soap in the bathroom. I looked for it and if there was a soap dish/dispenser I did not see it. There are tons of places in San Francisco that serve the same-ol brunch: you know, pancakes, omelettes, eggs benedict, french toast, corned beef hash, etc. Some are pricey, some are inexpensive, some are seriously greasy, and some attempt to be gourmet. Kate's Kitchen is the place I take friends who want something unpretentious-but-a-little-different: With Kate's Kitchen, an effort has been made to make breakfast just a bit more special, and it's all in the touches. My husband enjoys the New England Flannel Hash, which unlike other places, in no way resembles dogfood and instead has a lovely marriage of good corned beef, potatoes and actual vegetables. I opt for the Orange Spice French Toast, served with real maple syrup (I ask for the butter and powdered sugar on the side)...delicious, different from other french toasts, something my taste buds really appreciate. I have also gotten their Cornmeal Buttermilk Pancakes with lemon curd, and they are TO DIE FOR!!!! YUM!!!! My mother favors the French Toast Orgy, which is the afore-mentioned french toast topped with a very healthy pile of fresh fruit, then slathered in yogurt, granola & honey....it's a HUGE serving, and my mother could barely make it through half, despite her best efforts! There are also many other delicious options to excite the palate: Flanched Farney Gaeney (egg and cheese sandwich), the usual "Big Guys Breakfast", oatmeal with fruit and nuts, Cheese & Green Onion Buscuits served southern-style with either sausage or veggie gravy, and they even have Hush Puppies! The Cons for this place are few but deserve mention: Kate's Kitchen doesn't take reservations, and it's rather small...so this isn't the kind of place I'd bring a large party. If it's just me and maybe 1-3 other people, sure, I'll definitely go...but since I hate waiting in line for a table, I'll go a little later, past the lunchtime brunch rush. But you can't wait TOO long, since they close at 3 pm! If you're claustrophobic, this might not be the right restaurant for you, since it's pretty tiny and very cramped. The chairs are also rather uncomfortable for those of us with an ample posterior. Parking can also be a dog in this neighborhood, but you never know when you'll have good luck and find a space nearby! But overall, this place is one I happily go back to time and time again! Kate's Kitchen is a great place to take your date the morning after, or your parents while they're in town if they don't like fussy high-end brunches but still want something a little special! read more

I went with the "Irene's Wrap" off their specials board, which was basically a breakfast burrito, with a nice roasted habanero-tomato salsa. After I had already ordered, I noticed the "Pumpkin French Toast" also off the specials board; I thought it said "Pumpkin Pancakes" (which they also offer) so I just skipped over it. Mind you, I had absolutely no complaints on my wrap, but that French toast sounds excellent and I hope to get back again soon to try it out. I've walked by Kate's many times and have intended to try it for awhile now, but it wasn't until some friends highly recommended it that I finally got the necessary motivation. Although I was almost frightened away by the long waiting list, even at 12:00pm on a Sunday, prime brunching hour, we only waited about 20 minutes or so. I have a major weakness for pancakes, and their buttermilk cornmeal shortstack totally hit the spot yesterday. The pancakes were enormous, though--next time I'll know to only order one. My companion got the Farney Garney blah blah whatever it's called, and even though it was a ton of food he managed to polish off the whole plate, plus 3/4 of one of my pancakes. I did manage to try one of his homefries, and I agree with a previous reviewer that they're kind of flavorless. Let me start with the positive part of my brunch experience at Kate's... The waitress. Helpful, friendly, and well deserving of the large tip we gave her (yes my friends, I do over tip despite the size of my nose). She was the only reason that this place got 1 star from me. Now on to the negatives (the food). - Pumpkin Pancakes: tasted like someone mixed sawdust, baking soda, flour and pumpkin pie spice (surprisingly not tasty) - Home fries: bland... tasted exactly how you would assume luke-warm potatoes with no flavoring would taste like Actually, come to think of it... the entertainment of watching the cook scream ludicrous things to the servers and busboy's was pretty cool... definitely worth the mid-brunch trip to the bathroom through the kitchen. Good pancakes are a gift from God. The cornmeal buttermilk pancakes this morning were as good as pancakes get! Took my dad ( ex cop- likes big food) and he LOVED it...did keep checking on his car outside, but got distracted by the huge servings! Ahhhh wait till you see the marvelous servings!!! Everything was terrific...fresh baked biscuits- great home-fries- and all very reasonable prices...CASH ONLY.... You betta come there hungry...when you leave you wont need to eat the whole rest of the day....week...month??? I am still stuffed, and completely happy in my pancake haze! The place to go for a cheap, good breakfast in a hip cool spot of the city. I used live right up the block and so on a lazy Sunday morning this place and their strong ass coffee always got me going. Pretty much everything on the menu is great. I love love love the pancakes with fruit! Their fruit is exceptional and the pancakes are HUGE!! The other special that many people grab is the Big Guys Breakfast...9.95 and you get pretty much everything but he kitchen sink so bring your appetite if you are ordering this one. Great to get over that Saturday night hangover...like I had a few weekends ago. Kates is a great spot. Be aware on the weekends there is sometimes a wait because this place fills up and is on the small side. Staff is super cool and laid back even with the rush...which always makes for a more enjoyable adventure at Kates! Holy shit, this is a fantastic place for a hangover breakfast. It's pretty dim inside, which makes it tolerable to be in public with a hangover like nobody's business. That, and the staff is not overly chatty and let you nurse your coffee in peace. Sometimes the chef sings along to the radio a little too loud, and the wait time is inconsistent--but the huge portions and SCRUMPTIOUS breakfasts more than make up for it. One look at the French Toast Orgy and you'll see what I mean. I'd walk barefoot over broken glass to get here--but thankfully, I usually don't have to. read more
