Small but ambitiously decorated joint off a side street from Lakeview Avenue. Small bar, eight booths, and a separate section for sushi. Egg Roll: Golden, crunchy outside, crunchy inside, and moist. Mostly cabbage, with celery and an unusual flavor from five spice but closer to allspice or nutmeg. No protein I could discern. "And for that reason," as the Shark Tank investors like to say, I'm pegging this one as merely average, but a very interesting average. I'd still get it again. "Andy" Wings: An appetizer offering a spicy alternative to the regular wings, striking me as what Kowloon's Saugus Wings could be if Kowloon still cared enough to put effort in. Scoldingly hot, fully coated, lightly breaded, bumpily crisp even under the thick hot sauce, and flanked by an assortment of hot peppers, onions, and I think minced garlic. The sauce blended oyster or black bean sauce with garlic, sugar, and heat. Impressive preparation on the wings, "Frenching" them into lollipops to expose the ends of the bones (no meat is removed; they push it up to make a plumper formation). I've seen that before with the drum parts, but here they did that even with the flats. Inner meat not quite juicy but definitely moist. Elite for sure. Sweet and Sour Chicken: Ordered requesting sauce on the side per my eating buddy. The chicken fingers were fairly standard (as are roughly 80 percent of the fingers out there), so no praise, no faults. Meat-to-batter typically on the somewhat low side. Batter flirting with puffy while still crisp. Sauce closer to ruby or brick in color than typical, while also closer to straight sweet than sweet and sour. Zero glop. Nice inclusion of onion and pepper in addition to the pineapples. Overall, average. Pork Fried Rice: Not the 1970s by any means, but probably the best PFR I've had in the past year. I've had darker in the past year but not better. Good feel that felt better--moist to the brink of greasy but not quite--than the color would suggest. Onion, egg, bean sprouts all included. Pork nuggetry impressively dense. Took me back to the fried rice glory days of my childhood. Came back a week later, tried it again, and it was even better. Great flavor, great texture, unquestionably elite. Spareribs: The wings and rice arrived first and the server said the spareribs would be out in a bit. For this reason, I'm guessing they felt guilty that the ribs weren't ready and brought them out possibly too soon. So I'll start with the biggest flaw: the surfaces were light on char and lighter on crust, feeling like they weren't really ready yet. That said, there was a lot to like, most notably the very meaty cut, the scored surface, and the gushing juices. Pinkish red glaze very lightly applied, with a brown puddle from a different flavorizer underneath. A little on the fatty side, but another few minutes under the broiler would take care of that too. Gonna say above average this time, but I can envision another try coming in at near-elite. Chicken Wings: Had to give the basic version a test drive on visit 2. Six jointed pairs (drums and flats) to the order, so 12 pieces for $12.95, barely more than a buck a wing. I'm not into breaded wings, but these were breaded, although lightly. Decent crunch, but not much going on flavorwise on the surface. Inside, fully moist to juicy and noticeable flavor from five spice and maybe even hints of curry. Well above average but not elite or near-elite. Good enough to get again. The scorecard: two visits, six items, two average, one above average, one well above average, and two elite. I've ordered to go a few times now and every time, I've been a little disappointed. Only good thing is that it's close by to my house. I usually get the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls along with other stuff. The tuna and salmon just don't seem fresh. They're not horrible but also not great compared to other places. The last time I ordered, i also got shrimp tempura rolls for my daughter. There was nothing in the roll except for the tempura shrimp which was extremely hard to chew. Even my daughter didn't want to eat it or could eat it. However, the place does offer other types of food as well, which I've not had so I can't comment on them. read more

Lemon Chicken sauce was sweet and tangy and a gentle lemon flavor to it. I ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice as well. Ordered it without soy sauce and requested it to to be cooked without MSG. No more sushis from Kashin Garden. Last time the tuna was real chewy. Today the tuna makis didn't look fresh. Almost grey and unappetizing. Even the tuna sushi tasted fishy too. Bleh. I couldn't finish my 3-roll combo. This has never happened before. These guys ruined sushi for me. It'll be a long long time before I eat sushi every again. Definitely never again from them. If I spend all afternoon on the toilet today (sending these sushis back to the ocean coming out from one end or the other) at least I'll know why. Disappointing lunch. read more

Spent $50 on takeout for family of three. All three rice plates the rice was SEVERLY UNDERCOOKED. I'm talking about stick in your teeth inedible. I thought it may have just been my plate but I confirmed with my family. No one ate it and when I called the women wants to say undercooked rice isn't "unsafe" and proceeds to explain how they cook their rice twice. VERY, very disappointed! This place used to be my favorite, I've been going here to dine in and take out for many years, but something is definitely off here. Did they change chefs or maybe under new management? First off I tried to order online as I've done in the past, the website appears to be different from last time and had trouble ordering my favorites so I called instead, they said they're having problems with the website so I placed my order by phone. My order was ready in 15 minutes as promised, my total came to about $20 more than usual but I understand the cost of everything has gone up. When I got home I found they gave us chicken wings instead of chicken fingers, the taste was a bit strange and the meat was a bit dry, the beef teriyaki was terrible, very dry and tough, the fried rice was bland and nothing like I usually get from here, the boneless spare ribs were just OK, and the Egg Rolls were good but still not quite the same. I'm hoping this is just a one-off bad experience, or maybe the usual chef is on vacation, but it'll be a while before I go back here and I'll be sure to check the current reviews before I consider ordering from here again. read more

I should have known, I should have known! When I drove up to Kashin Garden, I knew immediately it was a Chinese American sports bar serving sushi. I'm not a fan of these but against my better judgement, I had to go in because I was craving sushi the day that I happened to be randomly picking a spot on Yelp and I'm a committer. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty impressive looking dining room and bar compared to other similar spots but you can tell I was out of place when I was there. I didn't have any desire to sit a the sushi bar since it wasn't quite authentic so it's there if someone out there doesn't really have a preference when it comes to seats. But for what it was, I'm sure it's a good place to throw back drinks, munch on some crab rangoons and to watch the news. Wonton Soup- The broth was okay but the dumpling wasn't edible. They were thick and doughy and the meatball wasn't fresh. Sashimi Tray- I don't think they were expecting anyone to order this early in the day or even at all. Majority of the fish haven't defrosted yet so that ruined it for me. And tamagoyaki was soggy. At least they got the Japanese rice right. We order from here almost once a week. Last week the ribs and chicken fingers were not up to par but oh well it happens. Tonight the ribs are chewy/fatty and the chicken fingers in my combo meal were hard as a rocks and seemed old. I actually brought them back and got some fresh ones. The staff is always very nice. Finally had the opportunity to try this place (dine in, since the pandemic) and it was as good as I had heard. Classic American Chinese food done REAL good, but also some of THE best sushi I've ever had. Peking ravioli was crispy on the outside and perfectly moist and flavorful on the inside. Someone in my party ordered the pupu platter for 1 which looked real good. But the star of the show was the Volcano Maki... The Captain went to level 9 on the treadmill so he thought he deserved the night out and have a and some Chinese for a change.. They just bring me so I will pay!! lol!! We started out with the poopoo for one, house fried rice,sweet and sour chicken,and Kung Pao chicken. The pupu for 1 was 1199 and it was definitely enough for 2 people to split.. the teriyaki was sweet and tender and delicious.. the egg roll was loaded with cabbage and it was fabulous. the chicken wings.. the chicken wings had some kind of a breading that is different than I've had at any other Chinese restaurant it was so delicious and moist.. the house fried rice was delicious and loaded with shrimp and little pieces of beef and bean sprouts.. it tasted super fresh and delicious! Grandpa Jim had the sweet-and-sour chicken which he loved there must have been at least 12 pieces of chicken.. Even though he did not have a mixed drink or a beer he was still happy with just the Coke because the food was so good!! The Captains Kung Pao was loaded with veggies and chicken.. He did ask for it extra spicy so they gave him a bowl of the spice on the side which was very smart on their part, as he could control the heat himself.. it was a little hot but he did go overboard a little bit on the sauce and was just bragging about how good it was lol!! Visited the Kashin Garden again last week with some friends. How this place continues to get 4 and even 5 stars completely escapes me. 100% agree with the earlier reviews about the friend rice. Its black, over cooked, and absolutely horrid. Our waitress delivered the food with no sauces and then disappeared for 15-20 minutes before I almost walked over to the cashier and said something. Honestly not the best Chinese food, there are far better options in the area. The only redeeming entre was the Pork Dumplings. That was a side dish that stood out but the remainder of the meal fell way short. Bar business is always strong on the weekends when I've been there but its super small. Kashin Garden is a definite pass for me, unless I'm meeting friends and having some good conversation over drinks. Three stars max read more

The atmosphere was nice, our waiter lacked personality. We ordered the food , crab Rangoon, came quick. Ah very tasteful , crispy and filled just right. Next our entree came , crispy beef and beef mushroom chow yoke. Both very excellent in taste. Hit the spot. Overall the food in this place is very delicious and would recommend to family and friends. Got lots of shrimp with tasty sauce & a mix of stir fried veggies. DEF enough with the rice for probably two more meals. Ward got the two piece appetizer, which came with a smaller container (Only one size? Why not make a small fried rice in this?) of very sticky white rice. He liked his steak teriyaki on a stick & we split the egg rolls. Also came with some rice. But he really loved his sushi plate, ate that right up. He too had tons left over for lunch today. CON - I paid $1.00 extra for mushrooms in my shrimp fried rice. Didn't get ANY mushrooms in my shrimp fried rice. IN fact there were NO veggies but a couple onions in my rice. Kashin Garden is always the first suggestion when trying to figure out where to get takeout at work. Their lunch box specials are a whole lot of food for not a whole lot of money. You have to order by 3pm to get the deal, but there are combinations to please everyone, and you get three pieces of sushi (with crab inside), a choice of soups (i always pick the wonton) AND a side salad with your combo. Their fried rice is tasty, beef teriyaki and crab rangoons are awesome. I personally am a fan of their wonton soup - it is very simple, with only the wontons & some scallions in a plain broth. Sometimes it tastes like they add a whole lot of white pepper to it and it has a spicy kick. Once in a while the wonton stuffing tastes a little fatty. But typically I like it. As far as the other entrees go, I have had the chicken with string beans and red ginger , as well as the beef with broccoli. Both were good. I love sushi but am not a huge fan of Kashin Garden sushi rolls because I feel that the maki rolls have an excessive amount of fluffier-than-usual rice, and they seem to fall apart as you try to eat them, which is not conducive to eating while you work (which is what i have to do). Overall definitely recommended by me and everyone that I work with ;) read more

Upon recommendations from a colleague my wife and I decided to try Kashin Gardin. We were very disappointed. The location is small, loud, and a bit uncomfortable with just handful of booths and tables in an open dining area. We just felt like appetizers so we went with a Pu PU Platter with a side of their House Special Lo-Mein. I also started with a small bowl of wonton soup. This is our usual litmus test for and new Chinese restaurant feeling if they can't do apps right, then it us it worth trying dinners. The soup was flat out terrible. A few stuffed wontons in a pool of bland and extremely weak chicken broth. The broth tasted like it was mainly hot tap water with a chicken bouillon cube. I think there may have been a couple scallions in there somewhere. I'm not sure. Very bad. The Pu Pu platter came out with the lo-mein. Apparently they put the platter together first, placed it aside, then worked on the lo-mein, because all the appetizers on the platter were slightly warm to cold while the lo-mein was steaming hot. We signaled one of the hostesses noting the temperature issue of the platter and she took it away to be replaced. When it was returned, I suspect it was the same food just reheated as much of the apps were hot but now dried out. Plus I could see that it was short the two or three apps that we tried before signaling the hostess. Very bad. The lone strong point was the lo-mein. It was tasty and full of shrimp, beef, and chicken, along with veggies. The noodle were cooked perfectly. But this was not enough to make us ever want to revisit. read more

I have ordered from here only a few times and have NEVER been dissatisfied! The portion of Miso soup was actually DOUBLE than what I thought I had ordered and so delicious! I also ordered the Party Boat for 2, as I had company and we wanted a little bit of everything and this course delivered! The best part was my delivery man, I currently can't drive or move well due to a broken foot, the delivery arrived EXACTLY when I was quoted and the man was kind enough to quickly shovel off and throw ice melt in my steps.
