I got the drunken noodles with chicken which came with tum yum soup. The soup did not have much in it but was flavorful. The drunken noodles were really good. I ate it all and I was not even that hungry. I liked the broccoli in the noodles. The price was great. I laid $10 with tax and tip for my lunch special. It does not look like a big restaurant but they make room. We had a group of 8 people and were able to sit on one table. I would come back here again. read more

Other thai placesonly give you a lunch entree for $10.00...Here you also get a bowl of soup and a spring roll! Sweet deal! They also have this amazing miracle healing soup. Omg! I have nothing but amazing things to say about this place! I love Thai food and have tried several places in my lifetime, this was by far the best so far! The food was incredible and so fresh! Just the right amount of sauce. Vibrant flavors. Red curry had just the right spice. My spouse thought it was a little too sweet, but I must like it that way. Good service and pleasant atmosphere. Not sure what's going on with Kao Thai but sadly, I can't justify giving it a 5 star anymore. Food has just been missing that final touch for a couple years now. My drunken noodles keep coming out pale and without that signature smoky caramelization they should get from the wok. The same could be said for the sesame chicken. It used to be that the sesame chicken came out crispy and juicy. So flavorful! Now, it's so soggy! Almost as tho it were... *gasp*...microwaved. Having said that. Don't let it stop you from coming here. The food still tastes great and is of good portion. I just need them to get it together and pay attention to the details. read more

I know that COVID has impacted staffing, supplies and everything... but I cannot help but be disappointed about how the best Thai restaurant in Silver Spring has now become one of the worst. Food is still hot, and spice levels are great, but the quality of ingredients and cooking has gone down severely. Meat is overcooked to the point of being rubbery, and some of those beautiful sour and umami notes that typically resonate in Thai food are completely gone. Casual, accommodating, and fast. Kao Thai is a solid Thai restaurant with a large range of options. The portions are finishable and the taste was fine, although their dishes felt slightly compensated by spice. The entrees were not super expensive but many of the starters were small for the price. This was the best Pad See Eaw I've had in the DMV! It rivals my favorite place back in Michigan. It was sweet and very flavorful! For $2 more ($11.95) I had mine with shrimp. The shrimp were large, so you get your money's worth. My friend was very pleased with her drunken noodles. I think it was her first time ordering them. Both of us had leftovers for lunch the next day. The decor is pleasant and as others have mentioned it is small inside, but we went on a Sunday at 4:30 pm right as they opened. Other patrons trickled in after us and it did start to fill up. I will be back again. Street parking is readily available. We parked around the corner on Georgia Avenue, which is free on the weekends. I am not sure if the garage around the corner on Fenton is fully restored yet, but the huge garage off Wayne Ave. always has parking. This place is next to the soon to be built Fillmore and is hard to see because of construction scaffolding. read more

Everyone here is super nice and very attentive thus making one's dining experience pleasurable. Whether you are going out on a date or with a group a friends, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out! By the way, here are just a few tips to consider: 1. Keep in mind that it is a pretty small restaurant so if you are coming in with a large party you definitely want to call ahead. Also, the busiest times seem to be during the lunch and dinner hours, especially on the weekends, so be prepared to wait a little. 2. My favorite dishes are the Bangkok Seafood Delight, Pad Thai, Drunken Noodle and the Ka Pao Chicken. For the spicier dishes, make sure you specify how spicy you want it. I made the mistake of ordering a Level 2 for my Drunken Noodle and boy was my mouth on fire!!! Regardless, it was still delicious nonetheless. 3. Make sure you order their Thai Iced Tea. I love this place, best Thai restaurant in Silver Spring! I can't count the number of times I've been here. The outdoor seating is great, good for people watching. As a vegetarian, the Panang Tofu (#51) and Drunken Noodles are my favorite! The noodles are sweet while the peanut curry is savory and a little sweet. Pranam Tofu (#50) is also pretty good, but the Pad Thai Jae (#44) is okay and the service is sub-par. Overall, KAO Thai Restaurant beats Thai at Silver Spring (food is awful, located above Austin Grille). Nice, ambient place to enjoy lunch or dinner. Food and service are lackluster. Met here with a group of friends for dinner. Many of the reviews mentioned how the dishes here have an element of authenticity and I was really looking forward to that. Not sure if they were having an off-night or not, but the food here was just shy of being good. Every dish I tried seemed to be missing one or two elements of 'wow.' I had the Pad Kaprow with tofu. The onions and green beans were really undercooked and the flavor was too sweet and dry. I was tempted to send it back for a second round on the stir fry, but after how long it took to actually come out and how dry it already was, I was hesitant to do so. The only saving grace was the mango coconut rice. Ripe, sweet mango, deliciously fragrant and sweet rice. What more can you ask out of this simple dessert? Service was slow and below average. Our drinks were never filled and we were practically ignored all evening. Food took a long time to come out. Was not a busy evening. Overall, not a place I would go to again with Silver Spring being so densely packed with delicious Thai places. This place was reasonably priced for downtown Silver Spring and conveniently located next to the Fillmore making it an easy place for dinner before a concert. This is my go-to spot for casual special occasions. I've brought friends and family here because the food has never been disappointing, the atmosphere is cozy, and the service is fantastic. FOOD: I recommend the Roti Kanai and the Chicken Curry Puffs for starters. Mu Ping and the Bangkok Seafood Delight are fantastic entrees. If you're vegetarian, the Pineapple Fried Rice Jae is the bomb! As for desserts, my favorites are the Mangoes & Sticky Rice, and the Green Tea Creme Brûlée. Make sure to complete the meal with Thai Iced Tea; it's the best one I've had so far and I've been to quite a number of places who serve Thai Iced Tea so listen to me. SERVICE: The waiters and waitresses have always been accommodating to me and my guests. They have a fast turn around with food and any other requests you may have. They never leave you helpless and are always happy to help. ATMOSPHERE: The booths are my favorite spots because the pillows on the benches add that cozy feeling to the place and I feel as if I'm transported into a different place far from the craziness outside. The ambient candles are just oh so romantic if you have your lover with you. Overall, I keep going back to this hole-in-the-wall mainly because the food and service has always been wonderful. While the entrees fell short, the sticky rice was DELICIOUS - something about their mixture was addictive. Can I get an entree sized version of that dessert please? How does this place only have 3.5 stars? The food here was great! We got drunken noodles, pineapple fried rice, and panang curry all vegetarian with tofu. Everything was on point! We adjusted the spice levels a bit and the staff was very accommodating. They also brought out the spice rack for us as well. Between the three dishes, I'd have to say my favorite was the drunken noodles! Second place goes to panang curry. These two dishes were a perfect balance of flavors and spices. Just thinking about them is making me hungry again. On the other hand, compared to the noodles and curry I thought the pineapple fried rice was a bit bland. Good but bland. We chose to order it because of the many Yelp suggestions but it did not meet up to the hype. There was also only a few pieces of pineapple. Dinner on a weeknight, and half of the restaurant was under construction, so I juuuuust don't think I got the full ambiance with electric cable hanging from the ceiling, but I walked by last week and it was packed and hoppin! The pad thai I had was great in that tasty-thai kinda way, good veggies and tasty chicken, as was the Thai iced tea, which is seriously the drink of the Thai gods or something. This place is peaceful (at least when I went in, Saturday afternoon) and delicious. A little small but they make as much space as possible to still be comfortable. I ordered crab rolls which was a nice appetizer served in a cute basket. The crab was warm and fluffy. I went with beef Pad Thai for my main course and man it was a huge portion for $8.95! I'm a sucker for getting the most out of my buck and that plate was well worth it. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, only a tad too oily but the crushed peppers that came with the spice tray evened it out. Service was fine, they were polite and attentive for the most part. There was a dead cockroach on our dinner table. I quickly brought this to the attention of management. The manager's first response was to just wipe the bug away and keep it moving. I explained that was not a sufficient response. Then, he offered a discount. The manager absentmindedly left the bug on the table and went to ring up a discount. The first discount he presented was 10% off. I asked him if this was the best he could offer. He then offered $15 cash back. Ultimately, we received $20 off a $80 check --keeping in mind that alcohol isn't subject to discounts. The customer service absolutely needs improvement. read more

The only reason this restaurant has so many positive reviews is because it's on the main strip of silver spring. Appetizer arrived before our drinks, and the plates were filthy (greasy fingerprints) we had to ask for clean plates. Which never showed up. When our main curse arrived the dirty appetizer plates were still sitting on the table (hadn't been removed when we asked for clean ones) so the waiter had nowhere to place the main dishes. We stacked them ourselves and held them while he set down the mains and then picked up the dirty plates. Absolutely terrible service. Food was average Thai fare. 2 is an accurate rating. read more

Disappointing. We ordered for delivery. The portions were small, especially when we paid extra for the "deluxe size". We ordered tofu pad thai which had about 4 pieces of tofu in it and we ordered a beef dish which similarly had very little beef. In addition, the flavor was only so-so. This place is super cute and somewhat off the downtown Silver Spring path. It's small, but the decor is just right. Nice classy tables and wall art -- a wood panel of Buddha and Tara, nice copperish colored candle sconce/holders, a beautiful water lily/willow painting and a welcoming bright spring green wall color. The small feel is not cramped but cozy and intimate. As for the food and service, they were great. We were impressed with portions sizes and freshness. As vegetarian diners, it was nice to have a separate vegetarian section where we could comfortably order our meal. The tasty papaya salad has a generous amount of peanuts and generous portion, unlike many Thai restaurants. The spring rolls are regular Thai restaurant portions.... we definitely could've eaten more (3 rolls less than 1" in diameter and maybe 3-3.5" long to a plate). The entree and rice portions were generous and tasty and so was the mango sticky rice. The mango sticky rice portion was actually beyond generous. Very tasty too, since they put on a crunchy rice/coconut topping to provide an extra layer to the experience. We will definitely return for the food, but the service was also stellar! The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is because I would've liked to see 1-2 more entrees with a veggie focus, rather than a tofu and/or starch focus. read more

Kao Thai is such a cute spot to eat at! This former take out spot is now a sit-down restaurant with vibrant lime green walls, a fun decor and of course, amazing food. The service is great, they were very attentive even during a busy Friday night. They seem to have a lot of regulars as well, which shows how good of an atmosphere (and FOOD) that they have. We ordered a bunch of dishes, but the highlight of the meal had to be the mango curry (we got it with chicken) and the green tea creme brulee. The creamy curry had just the right amounts of sweetness and spice to it, which was perfect with the rice. And really, can anyone ever go wrong with creme brulee? ESPECIALLY green tea flavored...?!?
