Kept seeing these random posts on IG regarding the mango mochi w/lima bean from Kansai Yamato. Stopped by shortly after we landed and to our surprise, they were sold out. We did however, snag the last 2 mango w/ whipped cream mochi along some other red bean mochi. Was a bit surprised that the aunties were arill making them though they were gonna close in less than 2 hours. We hopped into the car and turned on the ac while we opened up the first mango mochi. Wasn't a huge fan of the whipped cream but the mango was pretty sweet. The mochi had a nice chewy and soft texture to it. Sadly, wasn't a fan of the regular red bean or ube mochi but did enjoy the texture. Went back a few days later at 10 and saw a full fridge of the mango mochi w/ lima bean. This is likely the only thing I'd go back for which was pretty good. A full 1/2 of a mango sits inside a bit of white bean paste wrapped in a soft and chewy mochi. Only thing that would've made this even better is if the mango we had would've been sweeter. Decent mango taste but understand there's no way to guarantee whether a mango is sweet or not. Still prefer the unique mochi flavors at Nishodo but quite enjoyed the texture or the mochi her at Kansai. Did notice the mochi here still has a good texture even the next day. read more

Ok, I don't have to fly to Hilo to get mochi anymore. Someone shared this little shop with me and I had a craving for some peanut butter mochi. To my surprise, it was crunchy PB! That had me at the first bite. Then I tried the chocolate PB and I'm sold! The shop is tiny, and not much room to move around in, but you can watch the ladies making their magic behind the plexiglass. There are premade sets but you can also ask them to make something that isn't already wrapped. In my case, 2 of each of those PB and chocolate mochi. I was actually considering being a piggy and thinking about the other mochi in the refrigerator, but I decided to be strategic and just stick to those for this session. Fresh mochi stuffed with fresh fruit?! I'm there! This is the OG giant mochi stuffed with cream and fresh fruit. You can find them in select grocery stores which is where I discovered them. When I saw they had fresh mango stuffed mochi, I knew I had to make the drive out to this location. When I arrived at around 11am, they said they didn't make any mango mochi yet and to check back in ~1-1.5 hours. They also told me to call and ask if it's available to save time. Sure enough, when I called back around 12:30p they had it! They were making more when I walked in. It's literally half a ripe mango and lima bean paste all wrapped into fresh mochi. I also picked up their strawberry and banana whipped cream mochi which included a small layer of azuki bean paste. First off, the mango in the mochi was sweet and juicy. The lima bean paste added a nuttiness and the soft, chewy mochi all went so well together. Next, the strawberry banana whipped cream one with azuki beans had so many dimensions. They fresh strawberry and banana, the fluffy whipped cream, the azuki bean added some earthiness. Since the strawberry and banana were sliced, you get a different bite each time. Some with both fruit, some with just one, some bites with azuki and some with just whipped cream. Since the mochi is huge, you can't possibly bite through the whole thing at once. KY won the color criteria for favors that needed to be purple and green. More importantly, they also won the taste test. My order for over 100 each of the ube mochi filled with white lima bean filling and matcha mochi filled with an was packed well and ready on time. The flavors are on the more subtle side, but that's to be expected with ube and matcha. The favors turned out beautifully and everyone enjoyed having fresh mochi! read more

I had to come check out Kansai Yamato for their mango mochi. It's really good! The mochi wrapper itself is super soft and has that perfect chewy texture you want. Now, I know everyone online compares everything to Moignet over in Chinatown in Las Vegas. I tried the mango mochi there too and it was delicious. Honestly though, I'm not trying to compare the two because everyone has their own opinion and tastes things differently. For me, the only real difference is the actual mango they use. Moignet uses that super sweet Philippine Carabao or Ataulfo blend, so the flavor profile is just a bit different here. But hey, it still tastes really good! The fruit is fresh and it totally satisfies the craving. Definitely recommend checking them out if you're looking for a good mochi spot or you haven't tried it. read more

This place is a small business where you will find their staff making mochi delights. I was able to park to the left in a paid lot located to the left of their business. I arrived around 10am and they were already sold out on some of their goodies. I was able to get 3 items: Strawberries and Cream which was my favorite as it was filled with fresh whipped cream and whole strawberries, Mango which was just a half of mango enveloped in a thin layer of mango mochi, and the Mango with a thin layer of cream cheese inside. The mangos were perfectly ripened but I can barely notice the mango with cream cheese and it was not enough to make a difference. Omgg, this is a definite must for mochi--the best of the best! :) Parking can be a little confusing, but there's a parking lot right next to the shop. Just make sure to scan the QR code to pay for parking. The mochi is always incredibly fresh, and you can watch the aunties making it right in front of you. Kind of a hole in the wall. So it seems that it is owned by a Chinese owner. She approves whether customizations can be done or it. It is nice that they do customize orders. However, two things we found out; 1) the prices are not lower than anywhere else that they sell their mochi even though they are the wholesaler. 2) the items made there are sold elsewhere like Don quijote so you really don't have to come here. no different types of mochi that can't be found elsewhere except maybe the mango (I'm not sure if I saw it at Don quijote.) They really should be consider giving a discount to customers who come to visit. Mochis are good -but not that healthy. No preservatives but coloring used and too much sugar in my opinion. I tried their mango mochi. It was good but honestly, I would rather just eat a whole mango by itself - healthier. We also like the peanut butter mochi but customized it to not have the coloring - just plain white rice mochi. I also saw that they used a pre packaged package of red bean paste - so not made by them from scratch I don't think. We liked that the rice flour that makes the mochi is really soft... not sure if they make this themselves. I would probably next time ask to customize no sugar in the flour.... Always wanted to go to their shop but since it's far from where we live, I didn't make it out there: We finally went to Kansai Yamato because my boyfriend wanted to try their fresh mango mochi. I've always been a fan of them since they were in the old 99 Ranch so I wasn't complaining about going there lol. We parked in the open lot on the left of the store. But you could also park in the parking inside. When we entered, it's a very small store that's hard to walk around if there's people in there with you. We got the fruit parfait cups, the fresh mango mochi, and the ones on the stick (which I forgot to take a pic of). The parfait cups were good with cream cheese, strawberries, and mochi. I didn't care for the mochi with the sweet soy sauce on it although I know that's what Japan is known for. And the fresh mango mochi was good. The only thing I didn't like was the Lima bean paste inside. I'm not a fan of that. I would recommend eating fast since it's fresh and the wetness of the mango can make the mochi soft and rip. I'm glad we got to try new items. Can't wait to go back and get their peanut butter mochi and other favs. The cashier that helped us was very nice and gave us a bag even though we said we didn't need one. From California to Hawaii - This was one of the top dessert places I wanted to try during my visit :) I had seen so much hype on the huge mango mochi and knew I wanted to pay a visit. I am a big fan of mochi so when I arrived in Honolulu this was one of the hole in the way places I wanted to try. I came later on in the day and they still had a lot of different varieties. I got a few of their red bean mochi and the popular peanut butter ones. The red bean mochi was okay and I much prefer the peanut butter one. The mochi outside was soft and everything wasn't too sweet. They were all good. I just wish they had more flavors. The shop is a grab and go type of spot. Not any place to sit and enjoy your treat. Located in Pucks Alley ground floor, the store faces University. Parking is free for 1 hr and is contactless. Score! Upon entering the refrigerated mochis are on the right. That is where the strawberry, ube, and mango mochi can be found. I'd recommend calling ahead to verify that the mango mochi is available and if you can reserve you order. It goes fast! The mango mochi is basically half a mango. Yes half a mango and it's not chopped up or pureed. It's a huge chunk of perfectly ripe mango. My parents think it's a Hayden mango. Frankly I have no clue but it's really delicious. The small schmear of white bean paste gives a subtle sweetness. And it's all enrobed is a pillowy soft mochi. My parents and I literally inhaled the entire mochi is seconds. We had the second one the next day and it was still pretty darn perfect. I am still thinking about this mochi and can't believe mango season is nearly over. Meaning I'll probably have to wait until next year to get this mochi. Overall I like Kansai Yamato. I thought I didn't like mochi but I guess I just never had fresh good mochi because oh my goodness this was life changing. I was going to an event and wanted to take dessert and had heard good things about Kansai Yamato so I stopped by. I parked in Pucks Alley and went within an hour of closing and was a bit confused when I walked in because you almost directly walk into the kitchen area and all the aunties were making mochi. I was looking for a menu or the items on display but couldn't see them. Eventually one of the aunties saw I was confused and told me to look to the right and open the refrigerated case to see the items. I ended up getting a mix platter of mochi (forgot to take a picture) and then this special strawberries and cream mochi for myself. Everyone at the event said it was probably the best mochi they've had and I ate this entire huge strawberry mochi messily in the car because it was that good. They have other fruits as well like mango seasonally which I also tried and was very very good. This will definitely be my go to stop for desserts before going to any event/potluck. Also tried the mango cream mochi too. They also sell their regular daifuku on the side. It's pretty much what you'd expect. The mango was sweet, maybe slightly overripe where it was getting a little tarte/acidic. Otherwise, it was very juicy! The mango and cream mochi was light and loaded. Mango sat on the bottom. I'm not the biggest fan of whipped cream so I didn't enjoy it but my friend was a huge fan! Definitely recommend if you're wanting to try something new/unique. Came here right after Betty's Burger because we saw the aunties in the window making mochi by hand and thought, ok wait... this looks legit. The shop has that factory-chic look, mochi photos everywhere, and the strawberry cream one was clearly their best seller. Paid $5.99 for one the size of my fist. Took one bite and...sighed. Mochi was sticky in that annoying way where it clings to your fingers and refuses to let go. No chew, no bounce, just sad mush. The cream inside had this weird grainy cottage cheese vibe, not fresh. Got there 30 minutes early and saw three older ladies busy making fresh mochi. They were nice and let me shop before opening at 8am. The Giant Mango Mochi here is a game-changer: a big, satisfying chunk of fresh mango wrapped in perfectly soft mochi. Confession: I'm not a bean paste fan, so I wish it didn't have that smidge of white bean paste, but that's just me. Also, the mango was a bit fibrous, but that's expected. Walked into this small factory like store not knowing what to expect. As soon as you walk in, you can see the ladies working hard, making fresh filled mochi. The store itself is old school and as we went later in the day (about 2pm), the fridge and shelves were pretty empty. Grabbed two strawberry cream mochi from the fridge and crossed my fingers that I would be able to order the seasonal mango mochi when I got to the register. The woman in front of us had rang that morning to order 4 mango as she had missed out the day before! I asked for two mango when I got to the front of the line and the aunty at the register started helping the other aunty who was making them. We didn't mind waiting a couple of minutes so they could catch up a little, they were basically making them and selling the same ones immediately. I figured I could just see what they would have available later in the day. When I got there, I saw all the shelves were barren. They happened to be preparing some red bean mochi, so I asked to purchase that. I inquired about the highly sought after mango mochi, but unfortunately they said they didn't have any. I saw other reviews mentioning calling ahead of time so you don't make the trek over there just to be disappointed if that's all you wanted. Kansai Yamato also sells their mochi at Asian grocery stores - usually you can find them displayed on a table with some other treats and little snacks. There is such a store next to Kansai Yamato where I was able to get a little sampler of their mochi. I would recommend giving that a try if you just want to try some of their mochi. I don't think they sell their mango mochi at grocery stores though. read more

She was super nice. You can watch them make them! We got the mango mochi which was huge . It has a thin layer of mochi encasing fresh mango . The BEST thing we've had on the island! The mochi is so deliciously soft and sticky and chewy and fresh. It's not too sweet and tastes amazing on its own. The ube crumble was fun with the Oreo which added a little crunch for good texture and the cream made it more sweet and dessert like. The ube mochi was my favorite as it wasn't too sweet and I could eat multiple and not get sick of it. The chocolate peanut butter used chocolate chips with crunchy skippys peanut butter and the regular peanut butter was similar minus chocolate chips. The peanut butter flavor was really strong and goes a lot way so it was a little overpowering for me. I wish the chocolate PB had more chocolate flavor and was a chocolate cream or a Nutella spread kind of vibe. Otherwise the service was great and everyone was hard at work making all the mochi. We did want to try the coffee and the matcha flavors as well but they didn't have them at the time. The recommended calling a day in advance so they can prepare which items we wanted. For all you mochi fans, I have a mochi joint you should check out! Located at the Puck's Alley neighborhood center, there's a little mochi shop called - "Kansai Yamato". Easy to find, as this store is just by the private parking lot entrance of Pucks Alley. Or if you know where Betty's Burger is, Kansas Yamato is just next door. Kansai Yamato specializes in mochi, but what's special about this location is that they sell mochi with fruit fillings (which I believe you can only get it at this store). Sure, I've seen Kansai Yamato's mochi products sold at the various local supermarkets around Oahu, but the items sold in the supermarkets are the common items.
