I passed this place many times and finally was able to go in. The place was busy which seemed like a good sign. We tried a couple flavors and unfortunately they all tasted very similar. There was no real distinct taste for each of the flavors other than vanilla. I settled on butter pecan waffle sundae which has a strong extract flavor. Also the hot fudge was not hot, but cold. that was extremely disappointing because I look forward to a hot fudge that melts over the ice cream. I was also mistaken thinking it was a hot sundae in the traditional sense but it was not. It was two triangle pieces of waffle on the side of the ice cream with cold melted chocolate. Not sure how they make their ice cream but if everything is just an extract to make the flavor I would think about reworking that recipe. Service was just so so. I had the Cookies & Cream mint ice cream and it was okay lots of cookies and cream, but the mint flavor wasn't that prominent. My wife had the coconut ice cream which she enjoyed. For years i thought this place was some sort of illegal money laundering operation as they were under construction for such a long time with only very generic stock photo images in the windows. Boy was I wrong. The inside is way larger than i expected it to be. They have a small crane game for kids to play as well as coloring sheets and an assortment of board games to play while you're hanging out. Service is also great. Unlike a lot of ice cream shops they don't limit you to how many flavors you're allowed to sample. Oh yeah, they also use metal sampling spoons as well as serve your ice cream with metal spoons. They have plastic ones upon request, but we were told they break pretty easily. There's a good selection of flavors to choose from. Pretty sure they're all made in house, but i forgot to ask. Only cone options is waffle cone or bowl...no sugar cones for you weirdos like my wife who prefer those. I got the pandan/toasted coconut and ube cream ice creams. Came in on a weeknight and the place was packed! I love that there's a lot of seating though to enjoy your treats. Tons of flavors, although about 4-5 were sold out for the day already. I'd say they have about 2 dozen or more? There was just ONE guy working that night and he killed it, excellent service. Just felt bad for him that he was manning the whole store himself. Ended up with an ice cream sandwich - mac nut cookies (great) and dark chocolate ice cream. Well, I asked for dark chocolate, but pretty very sure I got the ghiradelli chocolate instead? It was a busy Friday night, non-stop customers which is a great thing, I met owner, Robert/ Dr. Robert, he was very friendly and I got to chat with him a bit but couldn't hear about the meaning behind his business name "Castaways", which I thought was a franchise but not, he is a also a Physician and moved here from Texas with his family. Castaways Ice Cream is made in Hawaii specializes in premium ice cream made fresh in shop and they prioritize in quality over quantity. Observing the decor at Castaway, I like how they have the # of followers they have on social media, ( Facebook & Instagram) displayed near the entrance, the piano which has a note to respect it and only play if you truly know how to play the piano, I want to test my big kids' piano skills, one day to see if they still remembered from taking piano lessons. ( I can't wait to visit for my son/daughter to go on the piano, hehe) & now back to the ice cream, I sampled a few flavors and sad news that pandan wasn't available, more reason to visit! It was hard to decide what flavors to select, but finally ended up with scoop of banana oreo (unique flavor) and coffee & a waffle cone. The verdict: nice and creamy but it was a little on the sweeter side. I hope in the future they will have water cups/provided, although bottled water is for sale. The waffle cone was fresh not stale, I enjoyed it breaking up the pieces and eating with the ice cream. I work in an office with many foodies where we share our experiences. One of the girls keeps on hounding my to try Castaways Ice Cream (CIC) which opened a few months ago. They had their grand opening on March 22, 2025. Located on the corner of S King St and Isenberg, CIC boasts locally made ice cream. My colleague just raves over the Pandan ice cream. This had me look them up on Yelp where a handful of friends came here and rated them high. I just had to investigate. I scrolled through their photos on Yelp and my eyes stopped on Rum and Raisin. Impressed with what I saw, I decided to make my way here on the 4th of July shortly before 7pm. It was a quiet day evidenced with lots of street parking. CIC, which I found spacious, bright and welcoming, had 2 customers who were just about leaving with their carryout when we arrived. We were greeted by a friendly male staff and I immediately looked at their offerings and noticed several empty spaces. I was looking for rum and raisin, which I saw on the Yelp photo gallery, and Pandan, as recommended my colleague but couldn't see either so I asked the staff. Unfortunately these 2 flavors weren't available and was advised their flavors rotate every 2 weeks. I then looked for flavors that I enjoy but couldn't find mint chocolate chip nor cherry. I had a difficult time trying to decide and the staff offered samples. I tried the lychee with mochi that was just okay and couldn't see myself enjoying a full scoop. I then asked for matcha and this was better. My buddy was waiting for me and didn't want to hold him back longer so I took the plunge and just settled for chocolate chip without sampling it. After paying, we took our cups to a small table, snapped some photos and it was time to dig in. THE VERDICT: I found the ice cream to be very rich and creamy. The matcha was delicious but could have used more of the matcha flavor. Chocolate chip was super creamy but flavor was just okay. I appreciated both ice creams didn't melt quickly. While waiting for my buddy to pay, I took a sample of the waffle cone and sadly it was stale. I noticed they also have prepackaged waffle cone bites and sprinkles for sale by the register. Customer service was probably the best thing of my first visit. The male staff was friendly and patient. Perhaps we were the only customers? As we ate halfway through, more customers walked in. When we left, more people walked in and this time noticed another staff behind the counter assisting customers. Impressive with the foot traffic here. Finally got to Castaways. Parkingbys iffy, especially since there's lots of heavy equipment parked along Isenberg. Fortunately we got a space. Entering Castaways it was pretty uninspiring I couldn't find the price list.. it's on the freezer case. There's no list of flavors either. That's on the freezer case too. They allow you to taste and the people are nice. Lots of flavors. Sitting there eating it felt like they did the minimum, as if they are expecting to not be there.... I was excited for the arrival of this ice cream shop, as I truly love and prioritize the homemade stuff. For me, it wasn't a win though. Service was nice and the shop is cute. I appreciate that they aren't packing it full of dyes and the serving sizes are generous. The flavors were all pretty subtle though - you had to concentrate to find the chocolate in the chocolate. But my primary issue is I just don't like sticky ice cream. I know this is from using a too high ratio of stabilizers and I imagine it's hard to keep temperatures cold in Hawai'i, but that chewiness just ruins it for me. Between our party, we tried chocolate, vanilla, coffee, salted caramel, almond joy, pineapple, rocky road, and mint chocolate. And none really wowed me. I ordered a small split of the coffee and almond joy as the best of the tastes, but ended up throwing half out. If they tweaked the recipe and pulled back the stabilizers while upping the flavors, I'd give it another go, but otherwise Wings is still my go to for ice cream on Oahu. read more

My friend and I decided to go for a well deserved ice cream run after a looong day of work. Upon looking at Yelp for a place nearby, I came across Castaways so we decided to give them a try. The pictures looked so good so we said we need to go here unless we really can't find parking then we would go elsewhere. We were super lucky that two cars were leaving when we got there so we both got parking fairly quickly. The parking is not the best, especially on a weekend. We lucked out and got there right before a mad rush of people came in. They offer you samples, but I didn't take them up on it because I just could not choose what I wanted. I was hoping they had the pandan but was a little bummed to see they didn't have it. I settled for the ube coconut and banana Oreo in a waffle cone. The ube coconut was okay but the banana Oreo was bomb. And the waffle cone was good too. Their prices are reasonable. I got the keiki size which was the perfect amount for me. And my friend got the regular which is HUGE and I'm not even exaggerating. Way too big for me, but if you love ice cream and can eat that much, hey go for it! I had such a great experience with my family at Castaways Ice Cream recently! The worker told us they just opened up 4 months ago. We were all so Impressed! First off, the service is amazing... the staff was so friendly and welcoming, and I love that they let you sample as many flavors as you want without hesitation. You can really tell they take pride in what they do. They also embody the aloha spirit... we were greeted with big smiles and the entire time they were so friendly. The worker's attitude definitely was a highlight and made me want to return. All of their ice cream is made in-house, with no dyes, and the fruit flavors are made with real fruit, according to the worker who helped us. My brother tried the pineapple and said it tasted like the actual fruit. I had the cookie dough and mint chip, and both were incredible. The mint chip had big chunks of chocolate, which I liked and the cookie dough was super creamy and rich. Okay size and $wise, portions are HUGE for the price -- two scoops for under $7! They are very generous with the scoop size. My husband and I shared a cup and we still did not finish it!!! There's also tons of seating and even board games if you want to hang out with friends. It's a great space to chill and cool down. My only complaint is that they don't offer free cups of water, you have to buy their bottled water. And while I like the creaminess of the product and the ever changing list of delicious (especially the fruit filled flavors), feel that there is just little things lacking that would enhance the business. First of all, the decor is sparse. There are a handful of tables and chairs, surfboard on the wall, piano and a comfortable enough air conditioning. Place needs some sound absorbers like plants. When the room is filled especially in the evenings, as it was the first time I came with friends, it was just too loud. Cool new biz... After a very long wait I had my doubts of this shop opening it finally happened and here we are Castaways Ice Cream. I've drove past here enough to see the sign and was anticipating it all and just in time as the weather starts heating up I was excited to see it all here in McCully. Castaways Ice Cream sits on the corner of South King and Isenberg Street between two parks (Moiliili Neighborhood Park and Old Stadium Park) which makes it a perfect place to grab some treats and as it's all house made including the waffles cups and cones this is some serious eats that they have here. Walking in I liked how it's so nice and spacious and was quite surprised how many varieties of flavors they have and decided on a Milkshake but was torn between two flavors Matcha and Coconut Chocolate Chip so I decided to give them a try and each was SO good not crazy sweet but just have the prominent flavors that I really didn't expect. Watching the ladies scoop after solid scoops fill the cup and see it being smoothed out by a tornado kinda contraption was fascinating and enjoyed watching as it was all just so natural and literally handmade making it so easy to sip and enjoy which is easy at this lovely local biz. They have a good variety very much like B&R so there is something for everyone. We ended up getting bubble gum, birthday cake, and cookies and cream. Passed this place all the time but never stopped by until tonight! So glad we did. Got the blueberry small size in a waffle bowl. Reminded me of the blueberry freckle ice cream that I used to always have at the store where Container Store is now in Kahala Mall. Okay, I'm showing my age, but it was the best! The ice cream at Castaways has the richness of a creamy ice cream, yet feels light. Hard to explain. All I can say is that it's really good. I was asked right away if I wanted a sample, but I thought that the customers in front of me should be helped first. Just finish them, then focus your attention on the next person, please! Employees were super friendly and offered samples of flavors. I tried a few and settled on the Ube and Pandan flavors. These are my favorite Filipino flavors, and I was super excited to see they had it available! I really enjoyed their sizing and prices. They have great sizes for great prices! It was super quiet inside but really clean. There is a dining area to eat in. There was 32 different flavors of ice cream all out on display. They have the option of ice cream cups, cones, waffle cones or milkshakes. They have a toppings pre-portioned and at the checkout. The guy working there was super nice. He was offered us samples. He explained us the difference between flavors when my son asked questions and even offered us the different add ons. He was super patient with us when we had decision paralysis with all the different flavors. He worked fast but was not pushy at all just really welcoming. I picked a milkshake with banana peanut butter and Ghirardelli chocolate with hot fudge, and Jonny got 2 scoops of Cookie Monster and strawberry. I always look for super thick milkshakes and this place did not disappoint. It was rich with ice creamy goodness. Jonny shared a spoonful of his strawberry and it was milky and reminded me of Dreyers ice cream. He did not share his Cookie Monster, he ate all of it. OH MY!!!! We found a new spot! This place blew our minds with how creative and delicious everything was! We tried more than 10 flavors (sampling is encouraged by the owner )! No artificial dye added! Our kiddos got the Dark Chocolate, Christmas Candy Cane and Lychee w/mochi! I got a double scoop 100% Match & Castaway Coffee. My husband got Lime Breeze. My other favorites that we sampled were Madagascar Vanilla (their award winning flavor) and Cotton Candy (love that there's sprinkles on it). The owner was very friendly and it was nice chatting with him as we decided. The vibe and ambiance was welcoming, clean, kid friendly and all around great! Lots of seating with cute coloring pages hung up. The flavor do rotate so if you see a holiday flavor, try it! We'll definitely be back! read more

We were craving something sweet after dinner, so we headed here for ice cream. Located in the former Hula Supply Shop, Castaways Ice Cream is a new shop located on King Street that offers premium, homemade ice cream. Made fresh with natural ingredients, Castaways has many flavors to choose from including birthday cake, pistachio, strawberry banana, and peanut butter. They also offer milkshakes with or without a cereal infusion. The young staff were efficient and accommodating. I ordered the keiki size of the peanut butter after sampling three different flavors. It's a definite plus to be able to sample unlimited flavors before making your final decision. There is nothing worse than ordering a cup of ice cream and then realizing that the flavor is not what you were expecting! The peanut butter ice cream was rich with a nutty natural peanut flavor. I appreciated that the ice cream wasn't too sweet and was a good blend of creamy and savory. There is ample seating inside and prices and portions are reasonable.
