I visited this restaurant the month they opened, and a few times recently. FOOD: On arrival, they bring out a large bowl of Arabic salad, freshly baked bread, some sauces, and some small sides -- all on the house. The salad and bread are authentic and incredible. Their smoked meat menu is largely weight-based (like a butcher shop), where you order the type of meat you want and tell them approximately how much you want (knowing that the minimum is around 1 pound for most items, and weights will vary). They also have other items with standard prices, like chicken platters, sides, etc. This is a smokehouse, so unless you like the flavor of smoked meats (i.e. the smoke flavor itself), you may not like what you're tasting. But if you're into smoked meats - it's excellent. The meats themselves are seasoned, but not potently with other flavors. Largely, what you'll taste is the smokiness and the cut of meat (whether that's beef, lamb, or chicken). There were a couple of details I wasn't fond of on my first visit -- which have since been resolved. For example, on our first visit, the rice was undercooked (crunchy/gritty). This has not been an issue at all the last few times we've been. We've had: - ribeye - beef brisket - chicken - lamb chops - beef shortrib My favorites have been their beef short rib and smoked chicken. AMBIANCE: On the surface, the place has a similar vibe to a diner -- but then they add a few things on top -- background music, TVs playing fireplace videos, etc. Overall it's fairly casual and comfortable inside, and clean. PARKING: There is a lot behind the restaurant which I've seen people park in, and there's street parking. PRICING: For the quality of you're getting, I think the prices are extremely reasonable and fair. The only 'call-out' to mention here is: like most places in the area (because certain folks are stingy), gratuity is automatically included. That's fine, and I think they only use 18% - which is lower than what I'd like to tip. That said, the checks come predefined with checkboxes for tips -- so you can accidentally end up tipping 40-50% without realizing it. I always tip on top of what's automatically calculated, to be over 20%, but it would be good to highlight this line on checks, which some restaurants do, for the sake of transparency. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: It would be great if they accepted reservations online. Lots of customers come from further out in Jersey, and even NYC. The peace of mind of knowing you'll have a table would be great. That said: we've never had a wait, nor have we ever been turned away, as a walk-in. Apart from this, for a new customer: it would be helpful if the smoked meat menu was explained clearly by the servers - with suggestions of approximate amounts to order per person, and in writing (e.g. explaining the average size of each cut), on the menu itself, to take the guesswork out of it. Before ordering, I asked several questions to understand how each cut was sized, and was able to get everything answered. For example: I was told the beef short rib can be portioned close to pound-by-pound, and ~1 pound is decent enough for one person, especially if you have other meats on the table. Whereas, the lamb chops are sold as a rack, and can be around 1-1.5 pounds. The staff is all very attentive, friendly, and helpful. They'll bring you to-go boxes and a bag for any leftovers, and the food tastes great the next day. read more

Decided to stop in at 5:30p on a Saturday, used the valet and luckily got sat immediately. First thing I noticed was how busy and loud it was. The workers move fast, they're ready to FEED you. They drop off a basket of pita and you better be ready to order--DO NOT WASTE THEIR TIME. Just kidding, but for everyone's sake just take a look at the menu beforehand and get a feel for what you want. For 2 we ordered the baba ganouj to start--FANTASTIC and they dropped off a cucumber tomato salad, a little bowl with baby potatoes and sweet potato slices, coleslaw, and salsa. This was before any smoked meat arrived which is great. The ribeye stole my heart, I loved it. Delicious medium rare with creamy mushrooms, onions and peppers on a skillet comes with a smoke trail all the way from the kitchen. I started chomping down immediately. Halfway through that the smoked lamb shoulder comes covered with a glass cloche that they uncover after arrival. Another smoke show! Clap clap clap. The lamb shoulder was not as good as the steak. A little flavorless and a little dry. I wanted to get kicked in the face with lamb flavor but this didn't deliver. It was good but not great, next time I'll try a different lamb cut. All that with smoked rice and it was a very pleasant experience, especially with all the sides and sauces you get. Once we cleaned our plates and took the rest of the lamb home they dropped the bill. No babe, I want dessert!!!!!! They apologized and let us pick. Turkish coffee was down, so we couldn't try that so I picked the cute little baklava bites and more mint lemonade for the road. Overall happy we got to try this place, much luck to them and kudos for the speedy service. We had a wonderful experience at Kanoon. It is a very trendy and unique restaurant with delicious menu items. The servers were very friendly and extremely attentive. The owner of Kanoon even came out and chatted with us for a bit. He made us feel very welcome and like family. This truly is a family oriented restaurant. The food was delicious. I ordered the Kanoon smoked meat platter, while my husband ordered the smoked meat sandwich. Both meals were smoked to perfection and extremely flavorful. There were a lot of added complimentary touches like relish, macaroni salad, cole slaw, salad, pita, potatos/sweet potato, and corn. We will be definitely returning with our family and friends. Great service and fantastic food. It's a smallish place and i went there primarily to accommodate my halal only mom - but I was really pleased with how delicious the food was. Got the cold mezze appetizer plate that came with loads of bread. Then had the mixed grill meat, medium portion that was way more than the three of us could finish. We found this place through instagram and gave it a try. The food was good, however I wasn't the biggest fan of the wings. The service was its down fall. The first waiter who introduced himself seemed angry and someone else ended up taking over. He was more friendly however we kept asking for bread and never got it( everyone else did tho) Lastly, the flow of our meal was chaos. Nothing came together, and my meal came after everyone was finished and the table was cleaned off. At that point I didn't even want it. I came here with coworkers on a Wednesday because I heard all about the hype. Their menu has a variety of items to choose from but the thing they are getting known for is the smoked meats. They serve pita and salad for you at first while they wait for you to order. I ended up getting a mint lemonade which was nicely sweet and lemony. We got a variety of appetizers to taste. For the entrees, I had the lamb shoulder which was so good. The meat was tender and fall off the bone and had a really yummy green/mint?sauce with coleslaw. I really really wanted to give this spot 5 star but there's definitely room for growth. Being the only halal Middle Eastern smoked meats spot in the area, they quickly attracted a lot of business. The place was packed on a Friday night. It's kind of tight in there but they managed to make it feel cozy with middle eastern decor, and music. Food is on point. We ordered 2 orders of brisket. Each order comes with salad and rice (huge portions of rice) and pita bread is served as soon as you sit. Both orders came with a show! One of the chefs personally came out with the smoked plate and removed the cover to reveal the brisket. I wish brisket automatically came with bbq sauce on the side. And they can definitely do away with the edamame and relish? It was a weird combo that wasn't traditionally served with either smoked meats or middle eastern food. A chimichurri would be a nice replacement as well (it's what I though the relish was at first) Service is where there can definitely be improvement. Waitstaff need more training on friendliness and the menu. I personally wanted both orders of salad to come with the 2 orders of brisket that we ordered, but our waiter told me that would be a lot of food. We eventually did get the 2 salads. A different waiter picked a spoon off the floor and onto my plate, when I told her she apologized and replaced the salad, which was how I eventually got the 2 orders of salad. They also added 18% gratuity and an SVC fee for a party of 2. Overall, I think it's a solid spot with very good food, but it's still very new with lots of potential for improvement. Served with basic honey mustard sauce n bbq sauce on the side. Also, did not get the cool presentation where the brisket comes in a glass done with smoke inside. Server said have to ask for it. Server was not freindly that day. My freind said the food was much better month ago n gave the cool presentation with out asking. It's been one week since this new establishment opened and it has received a lot of buzz. I called initially to make a reservation however, I was told no reservations on the weekends. I get to Kanoon around 530 and they said it's an hour wait. People came in after us and were told the same thing however, they were seated before us. They need to have a proper system to manage the crowd and not let some customers just cut in front of others. After complaining to the owner who is extremely nice, we were finally seated. The wait staff seemed very overwhelmed with how busy the establishment was and it did not seem like the staff was well versed on the menu either. We ordered the lamb shoulder, brisket and beef shank. We had ordered the wings however, they were sold out. The best thing we had tonight was the brisket. Everything else was bland and slightly on the dry side. I wished they gave us more bbq sauce on the side because it needed to be drenched in it. Our sides included bulgar, rice and salad and honestly kudos for keeping the Arabic touch in a heavily Arabic area but it would have been nice to have things like corn/ cornbread as a side too. FYI the meat is per pound and because the shank and shoulder are pre cut they each weighed around 3-5lbs so be prepared to pay 100$ for each. read more

We basically had to pay for a brisket with only fat lol. Ordered shrimps and another complete ripoff. You get 6-7 medium size shrimps that looked like pan fried rather then grilled. We got the medium mixed grill platter and brisket. It was more than enough for a group of 5 people. The meats are cooked perfectly. The chicken is my favorite, skewered or plated. Mint lemonade is a must for drinks! They also give grilled corn too which has the perfect amount of char. I will come here again! The place at most is a mediocre, loud with below average furniture and setting. we wanted to try their signature food, so we ordered smoked lamb- neck and shoulder and for drink only water. The quality of the meat was not extraordinary and they had a live very loud show of preparing food that was not impressive. Our bill was $226.40 ( on the menu it says $29.90). Considering the location, restaurant itself, service and food this is outrageous! The best I can say is that is a RIP-OFF! First the food, when we sat down we received salad, pita, potatoes and some small salads macaroni, coleslaw and a salsa. We ordered the short ribs which had a great presentation under a glass dome with smoke and the rib eye steak. The staff were all welcoming and friendly and there were alot of them. We never felt rushed and they took care of us. The only two things I didn't care for was one woman cleaning things off the table while we were eating and reaching over our food to grab things and the other its super loud inside. Yes it was busy and a few kids making noise but there was music on top of all that as well, made it a little hard to talk and hear. All in all, it was a great dinner and I will definitely go back and recommend it to others.
