Saw Jamaican food online and wanted to give it a try . I searched for the best in Buffalo and I was shown to Kalypso Restaurant. For once the internet wasn't wrong ! Just good ol' Jamaican food. I tried the oxtail/jerked chicken combo for $12.95. It comes with oxtail, jerked chicken, rice, slaw and a plantain. The food was succulent and the customer service was great. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is the portions of the meat. I've only taken out from here and the portions of meat was very small however they do give a generous portion of rice. I would have preferred less rice and more meat. read more

My friend and I decided to come here for dinner on a Friday night. There isn't a parking lot so we parked on the street with no trouble, lots of room. In fact, when we got to the restaurant we were the only ones there. We considered our choice but decided to go ahead because of all the great reviews and we were not disappointed. And more people came in later after we had ordered and sat down. I got the brown stew chicken, small size, and it was so delicious. My friends got the Jerk Pork and the Curry Goat. We probably waited about 10 min before the food was brought out on our trays with a glass of water. I also got a coconut juice which I was enjoying while waiting for the food. The meat was so tender and the spices were perfect. The meals came with rice, a little slaw salad thing and a fried plantain. I couldn't finish my small meal but the guys finished theirs. I wish I knew of this place when I used to live around the area. It is a great find for anyone who is interested in great Caribbean food. I admit I am not the most versed person in Caribbean, most specifically Jamaican, cuisine, but this place seems as mom-and-pop-family-styled-cooking as it gets! I ordered the Jerk chicken large, which came with some cole slaw, rice and beans, and THREE chicken pieces. I believe the pieces were thighs, which in itself, is incredibly portions. But what really makes this meal incredible was the way it was slow-cooked that made the chicken super soft and fall off the bone. Slathered on was the jerk sauce, which the cashier warned me was very hot. I am accustomed to spicy foods so I did not mind, but those who are more sensitive might want to avoid. I never take home food as it never really tastes as good when you have to reheat it and I can usually finish my food in one sitting. This, however, was a challenge. I really enjoyed the oxtail, all of the meat was super tender. We ordered take out on a Friday night from Kalypso. I wanted the jerk pork dinner, but they were all out :( so I got the jerk chicken instead. My husband also go the chicken, we split a veggie Jamaican pattie and the curry shrimp. When I arrived, it was fairly busy, very clean and friendly. The portions were very large, and the price very reasonable. The chicken was very tender and tasted great! A had a nice heat to it. The shrimp was also very good. The patties was my favorite! Something so simple, so delicious! The only thing we didn't care for that came with the meals was the plantain, but it's not because of the way they prepared it, just because we don't like them. The veggies that came with the dinner, super good, fresh! The rice and peas were cooked perfectly as well. Not overlooked rice like other places! I grabbed take out Saturday night around 6. Only one person was dining in, but they had a steady stream of take out during the 45 minutes I was there. Ordered jerk chicken and curry goat combo. It's served on rice and beans and a side of cabbage slaw and plantain. The slaw was not dressed, or very lightly, and I thought it could have used some acid. Rice was slightly over cooked but not bad at all. The jerk chicken came with some sauce, wish I had some more but otherwise was great. They have hours posted on flyers that they handed out that contradict the hours posted on their door which left me an my friends stranded, and eventually trying Kung Food. The jerk chicken here is amazing, as well as the stew halibut and king fish. I really want to try their oxtail, but it was sold out. Good sized portions and good prices. What a gem. This place is really the spot! If you want good Jamaican food and a lot of it this is your place. The jerk chicken here is literally so tender that when you go to pick it up by the bone, the bone slides right out clean. The curry chicken is great as well. Next time I'm going to try the oxtail, I heard that was great. They give you heaping portions of rice & beans with the meals as well. The beef patties are amazing. The only aspect of this place I don't like is that the food is not spicy enough. Gotta kick it up a few notches or give an extra spicy option! Being a UB student, I wish they would accept Campus Cash so people can come more often. Food is amazing and fresh but a little pricey for my pockets as a college student. Coming from New York City who is the Mecca for Caribbean and international food, I've come to expect a certain standard when trying new places away from home. Unfortunately, this standard was not met 100% at Kalypso. Don't get me wrong, the portion size was quite generous for a large oxtail with curry goat combo but the taste was absolutely bland. The cabbage was the best tasting part of my meal. I only gave this establishment a 3 star rating simply because this meal did hit the spot the next day after I warmed it up and sprinkled some salt and black pepper on it which leads me to think that there is some potential there. Loved the veggie patty. They were out of coco bread, so it didn't really set the patty off the way I would have hoped but that's ok. The meal I got was curry shrimp. The flavors were great. We ordered a curry shrimp, curry goat , a spicy beef and cheese patty and a extra side of sweet plantains. Both curries were completely lacking in flavor, the shrimp was even worse then the goat. They forgot the extra plantains and frankly neither of us cared because the three that came with the curries were not at all good. Not soft, not sweet enuf to be sweet plantains and not crispy or savory enough to be just fried plantains. The only good thing was the patty , the cheese made it extra yum. Excellent little find in Buffalo and I was not disappointed! Tried the brown stew chicken and jerk chicken are both were fantastic! Plantains were cooked perfectly and with a lot of flavor. Even the rice and beans were great! My friend tried the fried chicken because he isn't very brave when trying new places. Food: I've had jerk chicken in a lot of different cities (toronto and new York to name a few). The rice was the general rice all jerk places serve. Little to no beans in the rice. Rice was hot. Chicken was very tender as it was falling off the bone very easily. Tasted like it was cooked in a slow cooker (I prefer grilled jerk chicken). The chicken itself was 3.5/5 spicyness (5 being very spicy). The gravy is a sweet type of gravy which I didn't like too much next time I would order the chicken without it. The coleslaw was mediocre. Overall my experience here was pretty standard. Definitely better than a fast food chain however I just didn't prefer the slow cooker taste of the chicken. I am so happy to have found this place. I have been homesick lately as I attend school in Buffalo. My family is Jamaican so I was looking for the closets thing to authentic Jamaican cuisine possible. I've eaten at other Jamaican restaurants in the area and was not impressed. But this place is wonderful. For one, the prices are decent compared to other places I've been. I'm originally from NYC where west-Indian food is highly accessible and cheap. This place is pretty close to the price I'd usually pay for the portion they provide. The staff is also very courteous and helpful. I was in and out with 5-7 minutes. I ordered a small curry chicken and beef patty. The food was tasty but very mild in spices. It could use a little more seasoning or spice but I'm guessing they tone it down for the general population. The beef patty was good too, better than I had expected. My favorite part of the meal though is the Kalypso slaw. I really enjoyed the freshness of it and it adds texture and variety to the overall meal. Food is amazing! The meat is super soft and it comes right off the bone. They also give you a huge serving, which is definitely a plus! It will take at least 2 people to finish a large. New Jamaican joint Kalypso, located conveniently kiddy corner from my favorite comic book shop - Queen City Bookstore, has quickly joined the ranks of University Heights everything-in-one-take-out-box awesomeness along with Kung Food. Ambiance/service - While they don't have their own lot, there is a large, free public lot behind the gas station diagonally across the street on Windspear. The restaurant was small and sparsely decorated, but well-placed booths provided ample seating and the natural light (though cooking us in the late afternoon sun) was nice versus some of the cramped, dim store fronts on Main. It was quite clean, with a huge kitchen in back you could see through the plexiglass sliding window in front of the cashier (I'm unsure if this feature pre-dates the current tenants or they fear robbery/violence, but it gave me flashbacks to the awful corner store on Hudson and Cottage). They were playing Cool Runnings on the lone tv, which I found both strange and amusing given the owners/employees actually being Caribbean. It's sort of like a Chinese restaurant playing Mulan in the background. Either way, service was prompt, not particularly friendly but not rude either, and he warmed up quickly when I raved about the food. Which brings me to... Food - My new slogan is "Pet the goat. Eat the goat." Somehow I manage to find goats both one of the cutest (and most pet-able) creatures on earth and one of the most delicious. Maybe growing up on a dairy farm and knowing that the moo cow you were petting last week is now on your hamburger bun has a bit to do with this. But I digress...I was STOKED to see curried goat on the menu. Far more common in Caribbean and Indian cuisine than in typical European fare, goat is gamey and tough if prepared incorrectly, succulent and rich if done right (as it was at Kalypso, with the bones and fat left for flavor in the slow cooking process). Americans who don't come from backgrounds where goat is common typically won't order it (or even try it ; I've seen people literally snear at when served on Indian buffets) so a lot of restaurants shy away from putting it on their menus. Two thumbs up for ignoring that urge. A curried coat lunch special, with a heap of meat, rice, kalypso slaw (a sweetish, almost citrusy take on coleslaw), veggie of the day (a large, perfectly cook plantain the day I came in) and rice and beans is only $6; I missed lunch but the same meal for dinner (I don't know if the portions are different), a deliciously fresh strawberry & pineapple smoothy and a huge extra side of the slaw was only $12 with lots of leftovers. My bf's curried chicken was awesome as well, and quite spicy. My only complaints - It was too hot inside the restaurant - on a low 70's day it was SWELTERING, between the kitchen and the sun streaming in through the mostly-glass store front, but both exterior doors were closed. In search for take out and didn't want the typical pizza/chinese/thai dishes. I relied on Yelp to find something new and saw the good reviews of Kalypso. I was impressed - it hit the spot. Not something we would eat regularly, but a nice treat and enjoyable. I went with Jerk Chicken entree - came with a ton of rice, Kalypso slaw, and a plantain. I ordered the small size which was more than enough - I still had leftovers. We ordered some Jamaican patties for an appetizer - $2.00 each and they have chicken, beef, or veggie. We got one of each to sample and the general concesus liked the beef most. I don't eat red meat so I enjoyed the chicken. There were some unique entrees - ox tail and curry goat. My husband tried both and liked it. Tender meat. Seemed authentic. Only complaint amongst us were the number of bones in the meat - but, I think that is all part of the experience! read more
