    Beef patty

Tried this spot on a whim and in hopes that it would hold to my Jamaican food expectations. Overall, it was solid. I ordered the large jerk chicken, rice and peas, Mac n cheese and a patty. It was a lot of good - I could easily eat this over 3-4 meals. If you're a light eater definitely big enough to share. The chicken was tasty and I could tell it had been cooked for hours and they did not rush. It had mild spice level and fell off the bone. The mac n cheese was very buttery which was a bit surprising. The rice and peas were standard and didn't disappoint. The patty was flaky and crisp.

I ordered the large Curry Chicken dinner ($12.00) and it did not disappoint. Came with cabbage and Mac n cheese as sides. The chicken pieces were big and tinder and came on a bed of rice (though it was mostly chicken and yummy curry vs rice filler). The Mac n cheese was baked which is how I like it and the cabbage was well-seasoned and steamed just right! I ordered red velvet cake for dessert, which was homemade and practically dissolved in my mouth with each bite. There is a small dining room with a single four top as this place is primarily a takeout spot. I ordered through grubhub (so menu price is likely higher) for pickup and though I didn't get a pickup when I first called over to the restaurant, my order was ready when I arrived about 20 minutes later. Overall, great food and good service.

Came from out of town and was so happy to find this Jamaican restaurant. But my happiness quickly turned so fast to sadness this is the most disgusting Jamaican food ever it never had the Jamaican favor the rice tasted horrible the so call jerk chicken look more like stew chicken , I'm really disappointed .

Large Jerk Chicken with rice and beans, cabbage and mac n cheese. Yum! Very spicy !!

Yum! This tiny little place is putting out some big flavors. Don't expect a big fancy sit down restaurant. There is one table and six chairs. Do expect some awesome food! We got the Ox Tail and the Jerk Chicken. Both with mac n cheese, cabbage and rice n beans. HUGE portion of rice. There are bits of carrot mixed in as well. The sauce on the Ox tails was really delicious. The Jerk Chicken was very good but be prepared for some serious spice! Wuu Haa!!! Lets talk about these sides. Both the mac and cheese and the cabbage were very flavorful and mix well with the meat, rice and beans. It's almost hard to stop eating! Yum. Seriously, check this place out. Worth every penny. Worthy of mentioning the small isn't much smaller then the large. Also, the drinks available were very different and in a fridge off to the side. All good, two thumbs up !!

I think they are still on I don't eat here often but normally when I do it's ok , I prefer the cabbage over the rice and they had some really yummy looking desserts on the counter but I didn't get any

If you're looking for authentic and delicious Caribbean food, then this is the spot. I order from this place frequently. I really love the Fried Jerk Fish. Flavorful and cooked to perfection. The rice and beans taste like it was made from home. Overall, the food be hittin. I def recommend ordering from here to eat.

There was more Mac and cheese, but we ate it!

We ordered take out through Grubhub- so I've never been there. The food was all great- huge portions, really tasty and great prices. There was a question about our order and they called and clarified- most of the time that doesn't actually happen at other restaurants. I really appreciated it.

Island Mix Restaurant was a strange place to order from. I was craving fried chicken one night but also had no motivation to leave my house for it, which took me to Yelp and finally the order page for the Island Mix Restaurant. All the description says is "fried chicken dinner / crispy golden-brown fried chicken" and says absolutely nothing about coming with sides, what the sides are, or really anything else at all. So to my surprise, it arrives which brown rice, macaroni and cheese, and cabbage which is basically 2/3 things I did not at all want at the time that could of easily been avoided if the ordering process mentioned this (I hate wasting food, but I also didn't want the stuff). I'm not upset about the price of the quality, more or less just a terrible lack of communication. The fried chicken itself was delicious and I absolutely give it a huge thumbs up. I did eat the macaroni and cheese and it was slightly above average, but still very enjoyable. Overall, I did enjoy the food that I knew I ordered and even one of the three sides. I would like to order from this place again but it would be nice to see more information on the ordering page so customers know exactly what they are getting. Either way, this place is definitely worth trying.

The food was great all flavors being rite on point. Small establishment cranking out good Jamaica cuisine, I'm making sure to come back so I can try the beef patties and maybe a lil ox tail.

Island Mick's was a place owned by Mick Hucknall (lead singer of Simply Red) and Mick Jagger (lead singer of lesser-known Rolling Pins or Kidney Stones or something). The "Micks" were from the Island of Britain, hence the name. However, one night, Haitians stormed the bar, drank all the spirits, chased the Micks away, and when they saw the red entrance door, they decided to paint it black. Then they started up this restaurant. And when they start it up, they never stop. What to order: Patties, anything w/ Saltfish. So if you're dealing with haters, just remember, Haitians gonna Hate, and Playas gonna be known as "Playas" to the Mexicans and "Beaches" to the Americans. Cus the Haitians gonna eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, and the Playa is a beach, beach, beach, beach, beach, but I'm just gonna turn T, T, T, T Swift off, turn it off, turn it off, ooh hoo hoo. Hey hey hey. While you've been getting down and out about all the boring, nasty chains of the world, you could have been chowing down on these... quick... eats. My ex-man brought his new girlfriend to Island Mix, she's like "oh my god... I'm just gonna eat." And to the fella over there who is hungry as a bear, won't you go to Island Mix where you can eat... eat... eat... If you didn't get those references, I'm proud of you. The decor in this place is adorable. Bob Marley on the wall, and all the Caribbean flags you can shake your proverbial, woefully inadequately-sized stick at. The chef is gruff and intense, but his family helps him run it. Very friendly, especially the young son & daughter, who have to be in the 10-to-14 age range: extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Island Mix has a big menu but not everything is available. The standards usually are, but the specials such as Saltfish and others, can take hours to cook, though if you ask, they make it to order. So I recommend calling ahead, asking what the specials are, and pre-ordering. What bothers me is that this is a little family place with very little Yelp presence, and they're in a city with not many Caribbean options, and they're good, honest people with home cooking, making an effort to make every customer happy. Then someone comes from a place with an abundance of Caribbean spots (NYC) and completely trashes this spot as their first and only action on Yelp. It can hurt the chances of success, yet by Buffalo standards, this place is excellent and deserves to be tried. Ah well, what can you do, it is what it is. Freedom of speech is king and it's better that way. Even when it works in painful ways like this. Edit: I just noticed the 1-star review in question that trashes it (by someone with 0 friends and 1 review, probably a competitor), has been filtered. Good job Yelp. I've tried the Jerk Chicken and to some degree I agreed with the New Yorker, it wasn't my favourite and was a little dry, but perhaps that is the Haitian version of it. Based on my first experience, the JC was a 2 or 3. The Patty was an excellent 5, delicious, juicy, meaty, huge and cheap. The Patty (Pastel) would have filled me up, and for that price, it's hard to believe it tastes so good. Speaking of big things that taste good... The service was a 4 or 5. Speaking of being serviced... However, when Dr. Bird's didn't have my beloved Saltfish Ackee special one Saturday, I called Island Mix. He didn't have any Ackee but would make me a Saltfish dish if I didn't mind waiting a few hours. By the time I showed up (2 and a bit hours later) it was still an hour away from completion. An hour later it was finally ready. He spent *well over three hours* making a Saltfish dish for me. The dish was absolutely delicious. It was dreamy, greasy, peppery, and full of salty yummy saltfish. Served with mac/cheese and cabbage. Juicy and wonderful. Full marks. Not only for the food but for the service: spending all that time cooking me something that, in the end, only cost me $11. Hopefully he was able to sell the rest of it to others, or he and his family enjoyed it for the rest of the night. I can't put into words how impressed I was by this gesture. The Saltfish meal alone would have earned the 5 star, it was that good - and so would the excellent, huge Pastel. However when you combine it with service this good, a 5 star doesn't really do it justice. So thank you to Island Mix, thank you to the gorgeous Lakwame and the studly Erica for telling me about this place (via Check Ins), you were absolutely right. Oh wait, did I get their descriptions mixed up? OK, reverse that. My bad. Sorry guys. And thank you to the NY-er who completely trashed Island Mix. Without you I wouldn't have been able to rant in this review and it would have been shorter. As in, woefully inadequate. Which brings us back to Mick Hucknall and Mick Jagger. I heard Jagger used to have wild mood swings. Maybe Adam Levine does too, which is why he said "I got them moods like Jagger, I got them moods like Jagger, I got them moo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oods like Jagger."

Was really craving some good soul food, and in support of black owned restaurants decided to try out Island mix seeing it was available for delivery. I got the jerk chicken dinner, it came with macaroni and cheese and cabbage. The dinner was so worth the price and the quantity was huge for the price, since I got it for myself. The chicken was well spiced and the rice perfect as well! I have never had Caribbean cuisine before, so this really hit the spot! The cabbage too was cooked amazing tastes delicious. The only reason why I have deducted one star is because the macaroni and cheese tasted okay not that great. Overall the meal was so delicious, would eat again and I would definitely recommend trying this place out if you haven't.

    Amanda R.

Island Mix Restaurant is my go to Caribbean food spot in Buffalo. One of my favorite items to get is the Veggie Patty. I have to get one every time I go there, they are so good! You have to get there early usually to snag on because they usually sell out by dinner time. I also like the brown stew chicken meal & curry chicken meal. You get a lot of food at a great price. Each meal comes with rice & beans, Mac & cheese, and cabbage. The sides bring the flavors of the meals together perfectly.

The only thing I'll mention which isn't meant to be a complaint is that I thought there would be more Jamaican spices and touches in more of the dishes.
