Had a great time at Kalaveras here in Oxnard Ca, the music was jumpin and the vibes were great! Service was amazing. We sat at the bar since it was open seating and immediately the bartender took care of us and got our orders. The drinks were awesome and delicious. I got the Guayabera and it was fire. This is a restaurant who has great potential once they get a couple issues sorted out. The decor and detail at this restaurant fits in with the atmosphere. I understand they are newly opened but from other reviews it appears the common issues are service and food timing. We came on a Sunday afternoon and were seated right away. The hostess were very welcoming and friendly. It was a great positive sign of this place. The place had great music and a great atmosphere. Every food and drink we had was very delicious. We started off with the margarita flight (personal favorite was cucumber margarita). The con side out of entire experience was the waiting period. We spent 2 hours at the restaurant due to the food and drinks not coming out when they needed to. Our margarita flight took about 30 min to come considering the fact we also ordered right away. Our appetizer roll was very tasty but came 45+min. It also looked like they fried it for too long or needed to change the oil due to it being too crispy as you can tell from the image. The tacos gobernador were just as they should be cheesy and delicious! Service was very minimal as our waiter did not come to check in on us until the very last minute when we were going to ask for our check. We also asked for 2 glasses of water and it took him 10 min to bring them out. Food is tasty but be prepared to wait a real long time for it. I didn't enjoy the sauce. "slow roasted buttery corn - chipotle aioli sauce - cotija cheese - cilantro" 2/5 - Two Tacos Lunch: Carne asada taco and birria taco. Another 15 minutes later she brings what looks like OJ in champagne glasses. I remind her we wanted jst champagne and juice on the side. Apparently , their mimosas are premade and they are mostly OJ! BEWARE of this bait and switch ! So for an extra 20.00 for bottomless mimosas, they give you mostly OJ, with servers that you have to hunt down. We then ordered a bottle of champagne (35.00!), instead of mimosas. She never came back. After 20 minutes I went to the bartender and asked for our server. He asked what we ordered and i could see our champagne has been sitting there ; he saw it too and sent over someone else to deliver it. If you want a lively environment with louder music, then this is the place for you. It attracts more of a younger crowd. The food is on the higher end like $17-25 roughly for a dish like enchiladas or quesabirrias. The service was not that great for a slower night though. The waitress seemed to cater to other tables once we had one drink and our main dinner dish. Afterwards we paid at the counter and asked for to-go boxes there. Then went back to the table to pack up our stuff. I would not expect the best service here but hopefully they can fix this by getting more waiters/waitresses. The food was very good in my opinion. Not a big fan of chain restaurants but it was a belated birthday dinner some friends took me out for, and they wanted to try the new Kalaveras location here in Oxnard. It was Taco Tuesday which we did not take advantage of but it appears most of the other patrons did. The Taco bar did looked very inviting. We started out with the Birria tacos and hot wings. The tacos were good, a little bland but ok. The wings were pretty hot but good. I had the Barbacoa since with the exception of La Casa Garcia in Anaheim it's real hard to find Mexican restaurants that serve Barbacoa. It was satisfactory but kind of fatty. My wife had the carnitas, also a little fatty, and our friends had the enchilada plate and Albondigas soup. They were underwhelmed. The restaurant felt more like a bar/club which is fine just not my style. The service was fine, a little slow because it appeared there were not enough servers, but fine. Overall I can recommend this restaurant but again it wasn't really my cup of tea . read more

My coworkers wanted to take me to lunch , I wanted to find a restaurant close to our office, and I. Came across Kalaveres. I tend to read the reviews with an open mind & take both the negative & the positive before making my decision whether or not to take a leap of faith. Unfortunately in this case the negative reviews were 100% spot on. We had reservations for Noon on a Rainy Tuesday , the interior is great, has an edgy fun vibe, the place was pretty empty , only 3 other tables occupied. We had a group of 9, The hostess was pleasant and got us seated, that's where things took a turn. We waited around 10 minutes before our waitress came to the table, no chips or salsa until about 30 minutes in and that's because I grabbed a busser. One of the other tables actually motioned to my manager & wished us luck on getting anyone's attention , they'd been awaiting for a refill for coffee for 20 minutes. When our waitress did come to the table, she seemed eager to get away from us, anytime someone tried to ask a question she'd rush away like her pants were on fire, which quite frankly should have been in reverse , but then again finding out at the end of the meal that an 18% gratuity tip had been added, why would she care if she gave good service, she knew she'd get a tip regardless. Ugh! We ordered & one of our ladies was given the wrong meal, it took them another 25 minutes to get the food to her & by then the rest of us were done, The food was mediocre, the chile relleno is the size of a Jalapeño pepper, they serve Pepsi products (sorry Pepsis lovers) , but you can buy a bottle of Coke for an absorbent amount of money. They don't serve black iced tea, are you kidding me? If you want rice & beans on some of the meals you have to pay extra. There wasn't a single person at our table happy with their lunch. So trying to find a restaurant less than 5 minutes from our office that would help time constraints , was actually a major fail , because by the time we got out of there & back to the office it was 2:30! I have a feeling they should retool the place as a straight up nightclub , it would probably do a lot better with patrons, because the interior & music is on point. But if you continue the restaurant route , please find waitresses that actually want to be there, and I understand working with the public isn't easy, but the service we got & the service the other patrons got that day was abysmal at best. Won't be returning. Look out for the tacked on 18% gratuity tip before you pay. I didn't take pictures, I was to irritated. I'd seen some complaints about long wait times, but that wasn't my experience--probably because we went early afternoon when it wasn't too busy. Everything came out fresh and flavorful, and the staff was attentive without being overbearing. Since that first visit, I've already ordered delivery from them three times--yes, it's that good. If you're looking for a club/bar type of thing, this might br a vibe for you, but we came here to meet up with a family-friend and this was the worst possible environment for that. This place just had their grand opening in July so we wanted to try them out! The place was clean and had really great Día De Los Muertos decor! Their tables and booths were really nice ans fun! They had good music playing and even a few TVs for people to watch sports or whatever else was on. Their bar looked really fun. We didn't have any adult beverages this time around, but they have really good stuff on their drink menu and even bottomless mimosas! Service was great, they were friendly and attentive, and were quick to take our order and bring our food too. The food was really great!!! It tasted so good and was authentic! The menudo had good flavor, and the chilaquiles were amazing!! Even their a la carts tacos were amazing! The salmon and sweet potato tacos were a total win!!! The food presentation was also really great! We went to another location recently and had their pancakes that were delicious, but I wanted to try something new today. Came for my father-in-laws birthday. First time here. Looks like a club with loud music, but the restaurant and ambiance are great! The staff were SUPER enthusiastic when there's a birthday party. The food was delicious. I had a michilada and I needed some olives . The bartender Sierra went out of her way and gave me a cup full. SUPER COOL! I was with a party of 15 and we all had a great time. The good... The mediocre.... The comical: Went for lunch, wanted to go to the place across the street but the line was out the door and remembered this place just opened. First the good. The build out is beautiful, they spent a fortune on the space, fixtures and all. Very nicely done. The bar is one of the nicest in the area. The reality is it's a bar that happens to serve food. The food menu is very limited and uninspired. Next the mediocre. The best way to describe the food: The Olive Garden of Mexican food. But this isn't just SoCal, this is Oxnard you need to bring your A-game if you're going Mexican here. We had the KALA-Burrito (their take an a California burrito) with carne asada. The other dish ordered was the Mole chicken enchiladas. It wasn't bad, but rather a total "C" of a letter grade for it all. Nothing stood out. I can't be sure but I suspect the chips and salsa, which were decent, are from a food service company, same too for the mole sauce. If not they might be better off going that route. The reason to go there would be for drinks, especially with a larger group and to also enjoy some DJ action, I assume on weekends or other busy nights. It looks like it would be a fun place to take a group for that. Better yet, have your drinks and wander across the street to one of the really great Mexican places, with some of the best Mole in town. Finally the comical. They have cute plates, (and small I suspect to make the portion size look bigger) but they don't seem to sit flat on the table, so we both spent an amount of time chasing the food on the plate as it spun. And just to add a degree of difficulty the table was slightly wobbly! The service was flat, again a letter grade of "C". The hostess told the person seating us to "put them at a two top" a tiny table, with hard chairs, meanwhile the place was nearly empty so I asked if we could have one of the booths, which she agreed to.... or I would have walked out.. food came out timely with no delay.
