The minute I rolled into the Thirsty Ox, I was mesmerized by Cailin. She immediately knew what I wanted to drink and had it ready for me. Like the quote from the movie Casa Blanca "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine" We immediately connected and it was amazing the service she gave. Not just with Cailin, but with all the staff at the Thirsty Ox. Reggie with his fresh produce and snacks, Tori with her kindness and sweet attitude Andrea with her bubbly kindness... Gabby & Ronnie with their commitment and dedication to running a nice place to enjoy a drink or two. I've enjoyed coming here ever since it changed from Jolly's (which was far from Jolly to go to)

Mariah, the bartender when I stopped in, was friendly and personable. I moved from Oxnard in 2008, when this venue was "Jolly's," and it was not a place for single women at night who just wanted to play a game of pool. I felt comfortable and eager to return this evening to play pool after an early dinner with a friend. An older woman often finds it hard to play pool in a bar without feeling uneasy. The new owner should be congratulated! read more

I went on a Sunday afternoon for football and beer...They have 3 Diamond Tables and I enjoy a game of pool. I was enjoying everything until I was accosted by a guy who would fit better at Walmart as a greeter! He was loud and obnoxious... jumped into others conversations and I heard him trying to bum a drink! The bartender was oblivious! He kept closing the back door where the pool players were coming in from... I'm not sure why, but he wasn't sitting anywhere near the tables. I think his name was Kevin,,, but the way he acted he could've passed for a Karen. I don't appreciate Bartenders that don't "Police" rude Jerks.... I'm local so I might go back another time because it's convienent, but if Kevin is there I'm walking out! read more

Cool dive bar. Good prices. Seems like it's a place for regulars to really get their pool game on. This bar is definitely a beer and shot place or jack and Coke from what I saw and heard about the margarita. Bartender was friendly. If you order a soda they don't give free refills. As a DD and someone in a large group this was interesting. read more

Prices and drink selection okay. But when I see a bartender scoop ice with a pint glass, that's my cue to leave. This is the most basic thing a service professional should know, so these bartenders either lied on their resume or simply don't care (and that's the vibes I got). I'm not willing to risk chipped glass in my drink and you shouldn't either. read more

This was our first time here. I had actually only been here maybe twice before. The drinks are good and lots of seating. We enjoyed the trivia night even though we didn't stay until the end. This was the first trivia night we'd played ever... it was REALLY fun! The lady leading it was great and she played fantastic music! I love dive bars but this place is horrendous!! We wanted to have a few drinks with friends and sing karaoke. We called ahead to verify they would in fact be doing karaoke. It took 20 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge us, took our drink order one at a time, made each of our drinks one at a time which took another 20 minutes for us all to get all our drinks. Out of many basic liquors or only had enough for one drink. The men's bathroom toilet was covered in feces. The women's bathroom smelled like sewage backeup and wafted through the bar everytime someone went in or out. The KJ never showed up or contacted the bartender to let her know he wasn't coming. I DO NOT recommend this place to ANYONE!! read more

3 and a half stars... really? I just don't believe it. The only reason this place gets 2 is because of our bartender, Rachel. She deserves a full 5. My friend and I ended a VERY painful dinner and wanted to go to a bar. Being out of towners we turned to good ole google. And found thirsty ox. Cool. Our lyft driver picks us up and we asked about the bar and his response was "uhhh... I mean you'll see some interesting people" oh boy HE WAS RIGHT. We walk in and the place is DEAD. Ok maybe we're a bit early but it never got undead. A group of 6 finally showed up and I'd still consider the place dead. Rachel was great. So sweet and seriously put up with a lot from a really old drunk guy who continued to tell her how much he wanted her.. gross. (Give her a raise) The prices were average for tequila shots, I also had two mixed drinks that were good. Overall, the bar did what it's there for.. to get people drunk. But if you're under 30. Avoid. There was about 8 people when we arrived all 40/45 and up. And the creepy old man hitting on Rachel continued to get on the dance floor and I bottom his shirt. read more

Stayed out there this weekend. wedding party chanced this local bar. Uber driver was weary of us, being out of towners etc., but Im happy we didn't listen to his advice & drine to Ventura! Thirsty ox had a great vibe! Jukebox was very clutch! Will visit again read more

Been here with my husband, its actually one of his favorite places to have a drink, its nice & fun. The outside can use some work... as you walk towards the bar it looks kinda scary but once you go inside its remodeled nice I remember it was not like that. We ended up ordering another round. For appetizers we ordered the crispy maple Brussels and tuna & salmon tartare. The Brussels were fried to perfection and glazed a sweet maple syrup. It also came with thick cuts of bacon. Definitely recommend this. For the tartare, it was also delicious and fresh. It was mixed with avocado and turnip. We thought the turnip would be off putting but it actually meshed well with the flavors. Came with fried wonton chips. For the main course we shared the NY strip and Lobster Malfaldine. The steak was cooked to perfection with a very nice sear and flavored well. Probably one of the better steaks I've ever had. Definitely beats out any steakhouse steak. The Lobster Malfaldine was also absolutely delicious. Most of the time, lobster pasta is usually a bit bland and lacking in lobster. NOT HERE. They included big chunks of lobster and the sauce was so good. Lastly, we ended our dinner with the Strawberry Hand Pie. This is basically a warm strawberry strudel with vanilla bean ice cream. They used locally sourced strawberries and I'm still thinking about it as I'm writing this review. Adrienne was our server and she was very nice and attentive. Since it was my girlfriend's birthday, they comped our dessert. Super nice staff!

Def more expensive than other restaurants but a huge portion. I didn't order any cocktails. I would come back and see if improved at a later date. One person in our party never received his meal. We had to ask about it, and we were simply told, "It's coming," with no explanation or apology. We ended up waiting so we could all eat together, so my soup was cold and I ended up not eating it and had to take it home. When the bill came, I asked what had happened. I was hoping the server would apologize or at least explain the delay. Instead, she didn't really answer my question. Only after I commented that they must have forgotten it, server said his meal had burned and the kitchen had to remake it. It would have been much better if she had communicated that to us from the beginning instead of leaving us wondering what was going on. Throughout the meal, the server rarely checked on our table to see if we needed anything or if everything was okay. Given the long delay and lack of communication, I also think it would have been a nice gesture to either comp the delayed meal or at least remove the charge for the chips and salsa. And normally we would tip less but she added the tip to the bill Unfortunately, what should have been an enjoyable dinner with friends turned into a frustrating experience because of the lack of communication and customer service.

For a Saturday afternoon, the place slowly filled up with locals as everyone watched the basketball finals on the tvs. Bartender was very welcoming as were the locals we chatted with. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but did find something to drink. My partner was in heaven sampling and trying new brews. Would love to return later in the evening to see how this place fills up and to enjoy more of the locals and what it would be like living in this hidden community. So shhhh! why is it always the old lady working Friday & Saturday nights??? I stay on base, me & the guys just want to enjoy a cold one, shoot some pool and have a good time,and not have to wait 20mins for a drink and then get flipped off every time. Just slow, very slow & gross its like watching grass grow!Not to mention her insane unprofessional behavior.I have witnessed this particular bar tender saying "fuck you" too many times to count to her customers. Definitely a cool atmosphere as soon as you walk in & the few times I've gone by I get service from a gal named Cailin , has great customer service ! Immediately greeted me and proceeded on asking me what I'd like to drink , If that's not service I don't know what is !
