Every single employee at this winery took the time to come talk to us while we were here, and everyone was super knowledgeable and passionate about the wine and the kalasi story. And they have a lot to brag about! Kalasi is 100% estate grown, 100% Texas fruit, organic, woman led. The wines are really great and they offer some unique offerings (including teroldego). Customer service here was unlike any other winery experience I've ever had. Only thing keeping this from 5 stars for me is I think the inside seating and decor could be improved. Had the pleasure of having my wine tasting with Jay! To visit & support a FEMALE GROWER & WINEMAKER that is 100% estate Texas grown IS INSPIRING as a hard working woman! I brought my mom, partner and family. We traveled from San Antonio. I loved it so much I became a member and took home 3 bottles!! It was around Christmas time so there was also a tree decorated. The tasting room has lots of natural light. I live in Atl and I am glad I picked this spot. Their story also drew me and how Kalasi is intentional in everything they do! From the labels, snacks, names of wines, to the water cups. You can also see llamas, sheep, and horses on the land around. Beautiful area. Outside the area they have lawn chairs, to sit outside and tables on the outside. Lot of space for dogs and big groups. This was an interesting stop on our winery day trip in Texas Hill Country. There's an Indian theme undertone throughout since the owner is of Indian heritage. The water and snacks are served in steel utensils, and they even have an autorickshaw as part of the decor. We did the wine and chocolate tasting, they were paired quite well and left a nice taste on the palette. The chocolates were sourced from Austin based Madhu chocolates and also had delicate Indian flavors such as saffron, cardamom and lemon coriander. The server was very knowledgeable about the wines and also told us the backstory about the owner and her love of wine. My husband just happened to ride by on his bike. My husband is the wine drinker and I am always the designated driver. UNTIL RECENTLY. They stocked the tea just for me. Amelia, Dana, and Laura have been introducing me to dry red wines. It has been challenging for the them to define my palette. I don't like spice, bell pepper, or black pepper but I love the most peppery red wine she makes. (An exclusive bottle) however I don't taste pepper. I taste pickles and I love pickles. I don't like Merlot, but they have the best Merlot I have ever tried. Yes, I am visit several days a week now. But I go for the pizza. That's what I keep telling my husband. It is that good. And the new Curry DOSA chips are the bomb. I didn't think I liked curry either. Who knew!!! Kalasi is a small boutique winery in Fredericksburg. However, they started as growers in the high plains. A husband/wife team. They will get into their story during your tasting. However, it is their story that I fell in love with, not the wine. That wine affair didn't happen until recently. You will find lots of wineries in Fredericksburg. However, I challenge you to find wineries that stand out. That do things differently. And more importantly, are they TEXAS? Because you can book a tour bus and they will take you wineries. But are they Texas grapes? Do they make the wines in house or make them off site? And by who? Or shop over stocked barrels from other wineries and slap their names on it? I am not in the wine business, but I am in the people business, and I know people. Kalasi Cellars are good people. You're not going to get a wine made by someone else, with their label. Because they started as growers in the THP you will find their grapes used by other Texas wine makers. I would never tell people not to visit any winery, well maybe one, because I have learned that there is a wine for everyone. However, Texas Wineries should sell Texas Wines with Texas Grapes. I don't think they would like us opening up wineries in NAPA using Texas grapes and calling it a California winery. Their are several locally. Several with nice venues. I just won't recommend them or spend money with them because they are NOT TEXAS. No matter how hard they try. However, if you're wanting a India inspired experience, I will tell you that you have got to visit Kalasi. It is definitely in my top 5 wineries in the Hill Country. We are white wine drinkers, but unfortunately the one white on menu we wanted to try - the sparkling Muscat - wasn't sparkling and it was extremely dry compared to most other muscats we've had. Truly neat experience! The gentleman (white hair) who served us our wine tastings was extremely passionate about his job and the wine he serves. He taught us so much about the owner, her background, the reasons the labels were certain colors, grapes, wine, you name it. Sometimes chattiness can ruin relaxation but he was genuinely interesting to listen to. He was not pushy at all, and I never felt like we needed to buy anything or join the wine club. And for that, we purchased a delicious muscat white wine (we don't even drink white but it was so smooth). The tasting room with all the wood work and windows is gorgeous. This was a top experience and winery for us. This tasting room is practically brand new and fairly bare, but I can tell it will only get better with time. Marjan and I are frequent visitors to wineries in general, and to Fredericksburg wineries in particular. Marjan has experienced the Napa Valley offerings, and has shared wine experience as guest of oenophiles with remarkable collections. We have enjoyed wines while in Europe and South of the border. In truth, we have specific tastes for wine, developed over the years, given the mentioned frame of reference. Ergo, our shared review of Kalasi Cellars. We learned of this winery from guests at other establishments in Fredericksburg this holiday weekend. The comments were so glowing, we felt compelled to visit. The winery is found off hwy 290, a few miles north of the town. The tasting room is placed within a couple dozen acres of pasture, home to their pet livestock. The winery grows their own grapes in the Texas Plains, and the proprietors have degreed qualifications in viticulture and business. The environment of the grounds can best be described as typical pasture land, lacking the hill country essence of say, the grounds of The Edge. There are not rows of vines that surround Augusta Vin. And there is no hill country charm of the grounds of some of the smaller wineries found east on 290. The design of the tasting room is of soaring ceilings, with windows allowing pleasing ambient light bathing the visitors. The furnishings are spare, with aluminum stools around the bar, the walls without visual elements, absent those we found at another winery we visited: for example, original works by San Antonio artist Mondini, or images of typical hill country pieces. In a word, the tasting room is contemporary, clean to the eye. We visited at the end of the tasting day, 10 or so guests at table. The staff, a gentleman and lady immediately greeted us. The friendly staff seemed very well versed in the history of the proprietors, the genesis of the winery, and aspects of the philosophy and techniques employed by the owners. We considered this a true reflection of the time and effort that the owners instilled in the staff, a reflection of the true pride in their enterprise. At some of the wineries we had visited, staff can be poorly trained, inattentive and less than knowledgeable about their product. This was particularly true of some of larger establishments, frequented by the "cruise ships" of guests that unload at the wineries, but such was not the case at Kalasi. We learned that the proprietors are introducing grapes that are not usually known in local wineries, developing reds and whites that embody not only the grape, but flavors that reflect aspects of the viticulturist's roots. The owners are utilizing techniques (optical selection) whose purpose is to select only the most desirable grapes from their vineyards. The upshot: lower yield, for better quality. They are also utilizing not only wooden casks, but also stainless steel, with varying times to desired maturity. We were impressed with this avant garde approach to their product. But the true matter at hand was the product itself. We began with sampling of white wine, these with light body, drier to the palate, with a moderate finish. Two were on the menu, both with similar character. There were three reds that we sampled. The nose of the wines were different, not unpleasing, but not remarkable. All of the reds were dry, and we found them with a different flavor, but with a finish that didn't really agree with our particular preference. Wine preferences are very individual, with shared preferences that can be universal. For our tastes, the nuances of Kalasi offerings didn't really meet our preferences. Nontheless, we remain open minded about this newer winery, given the intent, grapes and techniques being developed by the proprietors. We plan a future visit. read more

Kalasi offered one of the best winery experiences we have had in awhile, especially during COVID. We normally prefer outside but actually felt safe inside here because they had everyone spaced out at the bar, and the tasting room has really high ceilings and felt airy. The service was great... Darryl and the owners were all so kind and took the time to chat and tell us about the winery and offer recommendations for other places in the area. It's pronounced "KAL-ah-see", if I remember correctly, and means "together" since it's a husband and wife who started it. The wine is great. The tannat and Sangiovese were our favorites, but they were honestly all good... even the whites, which are not normally our favorites. We took some home. But the thing that really topped it all off for us was the food. I've never seen Indian food at a winery and it was absolutely delicious! The samosas and tikka masala pizza actually went really well with the wine. They appeared to be just reheated from frozen (it's not like they have a full restaurant, it's just a light menu they started serving due to COVID rules) but don't let that dissuade you, it was amazing. The location is kind of in a residential area, so we would never have just passed by (thank you Yelp!) but it is so close to Fredericksburg, and very convenient.
